Ramsey Hunt is caught in a spiral no one can save him from, and he’s taking his entire Clan of crow shifters down with him. A broken mating bond has him going insane, and all he can do is try to hold onto his Alpha position as long as possible. But when a spirited beauty comes waltzing into his MC’s clubhouse demanding an audience with him, he can’t help but think he’s dreaming her up. She’s got paperwork saying he’s her mate, and this shifter has one serious stubborn streak in her. All he wants to do is go insane in peace, but she isn’t having it. And now the real work begins. He’s got to sever one mating bond completely if he wants a shot at survival. And if this crazy plan works, he might just have a second shot at happiness too.
Vina wants a crow. She doesn’t care who they are, as long as their shifter animal is a crow. They mate for life and she’s tired of being pushed around by the men she dates. So when a crow comes up on the shifter matchmaking service she applied for three years ago, she has a good feeling her stars are about to change. That is, until she meets Ramsey. The half-crazed Alpha of the biggest, baddest Clan of crow shifters in existence isn’t going to make pairing up easy. And the more Vina gets to know him, the more she thinks it wasn’t him who signed up for a mate after all.
And now Vina has two choices—cut and run from the storm coming for the Red Dead Mayhem Clan, or dig her heels in and rip that old mating bond out of Ramsey. Up until now, no one has appreciated her, but what if…just what if…she could be the one to save the crows?

T.S. Joyce is devoted to bringing hot shifter romances to readers. Hungry alpha males are her calling card, and the wilder the men, the more she'll make them pour their hearts out. She werebear swears there'll be no swooning heroines in her books. It takes tough-as-nails women to handle the shifters of Bear Valley.
She lives in a tiny town, outside of a tiny city, and devotes her life to writing big stories. Foodie, bear whisperer, ninja, thief of tiny bottles of awesome smelling hotel shampoo, nap connoisseur, movie fanatic, and zombie slayer, and most of this bio is true.
Bear Shifters? Check Smoldering Alpha Hotness? Double Check Sexy Scenes? Fasten up your girdles, ladies and gents, it's gonna to be a wild ride.
I have many reading-pet-peeves, and one of them assuredly is: reading something that is labeled as a first book in a series only to find out that it's actually the beginning of a spin-off series. Especially when the original series (which I haven't read) turns out to be required reading for the plot of the book I am actually reading. This is the second time this has happened to me recently (looking at you, The Highlander Who Protected Me). There needs to be a warning about this in the book blurb!!
For the record, I'm not talking some basic character background or world building, because those things can be overlooked especially when they don't really directly relate to the main events happening in the new series/book. But in this case, the book blurb talks about a broken mating bond that is driving a crow-shifter-alpha crazy. It turns out that broken bond was seemingly the entire plot of some other previous book/series. So in this book we are only told about it very briefly because it's assumed that we have already read all about it. Only of course, I haven't. Ugh.
But ignoring that missing-highly-relevant-detailed-information drawback, which arguably could be seen as my own fault, I did like actually what IS in this book. It just felt a tad short in book length. Ramsey at the very beginning is already going a little crazy and then almost immediately meets Vina. They have a very anti-meet-cute story that I enjoyed. I also really appreciated the angst of a woman who specifically has been waiting and looking for a mate-for-life situation who finds herself falling for a man who from the outset tells her he already has a mate who isn't her. I do wish the secondary characters had been more built up, especially since they are going to be leading roles in future books.
I forgot how much I liked TS Joyce. I didn’t care for her last series and stopped reading her. I got in a reading slump couldn’t find anything I liked and fell into this book.
Good read with a complicated plot. I wanted to punch Ramsey at one point, but let’s just say he gets his stuff together and fixes it. Loved Vina!
I read this a couple of years ago, but I couldn't remember it. I can understand why I gave it 2⭐'s because the "feel" of the book isn't really my thing, but I'll round up because it is most definitely a Jac thing.
2.5-3 Stars
I liked the premise of the plot... The H slowly going crazy/dying from a broken mate bond and the h willing to fight for him… but I found the tone off-putting at times.
This is the first book in the series, but it was obvious we were missing part of the story. After researching, I discovered the storyline was introduced in For The Soul Of An Outlaw. Ramsey in a crow shifter and his animal decided his mate for life was Tenlee (the h from that book) but she wasn’t down with that. I’m not sure if he was the bad guy from that book, (I'm wondering if he was and that's why she brushed over it), but here it almost reads like Ten wasn’t the nicest person and coldly rejected him/couldn’t stand his touch. I’m assuming there were reasons for her rejecting him because he was hot and dedicated to her, so I’m confused why his touch repulsed her. 🤷♀️ Regardless, the backstory is missing, and I felt we really needed it.
This book opens with Ramsey struggling with her rejection (because she mated with another H) with his crow slowly going crazy and killing him. There’s a lot of talk about a war and shifters being made public that I’m assuming is also from the other series, but we’re given zero information. All we know is that he’s the alpha/king of the crows and the prez of a mc.
Vina is a moose shifter that has really struggled finding a mate. She’s divorced and weary of being rejected again, so she’s only interested in a crow because they mate for life. She joins a dating service and is matched with Ramsey. Unfortunately, she learns quickly that he didn’t fill out the application.
I thought both mc’s were ok. I really liked how Vina accepted Ramsey rather than trying to shame or change him which was huge because she was a mega-prude… but I struggled with the tone some. I’m not a fan of quirky/silly shenanigans… I believe it’s supposed to be funny, but I find it unappealing and almost DNF’ed this early one when I hit…
“Like lunch breaks? LOL, no. I eat while I’m working.” Good God, she’d just said “LOL” out loud. …her traitor body was begging for Ramsey wiener right now. … see your Care Bear panties.” The waist was snug, but her booty cheeks did look round and lifted in these. And the sparkles on the tooshie sure were nice. Vina scoffed. “Not likely, you perverted… perverted… prick biscuit.”
Bottom Line- Ok, not great. Pushing past the occasional quirky/silliness I just felt like we were missing large parts of the story. I could still follow along but could’ve connected to the characters better with the entire backstory/worldbuilding. There were so many things mentioned and never explained... war, fighting with other crows, the Ten situation, shifters only being male (even though Ten and Vina are shifters 🐿️ &🫎), we’re not even told how his crow could choose another mate or how it chose Ten without his human side’s agreement. I think the author just assumed we had all read the other series and already had all this knowledge. I was REALLY worried about the sexy-time with all the wiener, teats, booty cheeks talk, and it wasn’t really graphic or what I’d call hot, but it wasn’t as cringe as I thought it’d be either. It’s on KU if you want to try I out.
Oh my God! How does she always squeeze happy tears out of me like an overly ripe piece of fruit in a juicer? GAH!
I loved the hell out of Vina, I mean seriously LOVED LOVED LOVED HER! Soooooo much!
I just ugh *sniffle* I'm just caught in a really hardcore swoon and need a minute.
Ok. So I knew she'd write the hell out of Ramsey but the blurb had me worried, it didn't grab me, you know? But I have 100% faith in her stories and grabbed it regardless.... maaaaan I just ugh!
If you haven't read this author before I'm jealous. I want to go back to the beginning and read them all over again like it's the first time.
I've been hoping to stumble across a paranormal romance featuring crow shifters for some time now, so when I saw this book (and it's available on kindle unlimited!), I immediately had to read it. (Why crow shifters, you may ask? Because crows are awesome. Enough said.) But...I was also mentally prepared for it to be kind of awful, because I'm picky and the stuff I find on KU is really hit or miss.
I am pleased to say that I enjoyed this story, for the most part. Ramsey, the Alpha crow, is suffering horribly because the woman he had previously chosen as his mate has rejected him. The crows mate for life, so he realizes that his clan (who are basically a motorcycle club who are all crow shifters) will probably deteriorate along with his failing health until he will finally be ousted as Alpha because of this. Vina, the heroine, has signed up for a shifter match-making service, and really wants to be with a crow, because she's had her heart broken before and she's head they mate for life. So these two meet. He's abrupt and crude and she's the quintessential suburban good girl (she's decided she only wants sex in missionary position with blow jobs saved for birthdays and holidays!) and it is a case of opposites attract.
Here's what I liked:
1. The book is funny! The dialogue between Ramsey and Vina is hilarious, and she thinks of the most adorably random things. Some of the stuff I laughed about might not have been intended to be funny (moose shifters and squirrel shifters); there was some real WTF with the world-building, but it was entertaining. 2. I liked Ramsey and Vina's relationship and the way it developed. They ended up being really sweet together and the sex scenes were pretty hot.
Unfortunately, there were a couple of things I didn't care for as well. I am not a fan of MC romance, so the crow clan being bikers was not a plus for me. (Although I did need to find an MC romance for a reading challenge, so I guess it worked out.) I didn't care for all the fighting and hints they were up to illegal stuff and the slutty women known as "Crow Chasers" always hanging around the clubhouse just waiting for a chance to provide sexual favors to one of the men. The story also featured one of my least favorite tropes, of the broken and damaged man literally "fixed" by the love of a good woman.
Overall, it was a solid three star book for me, but rounded up to four because it made me laugh.
Read for Unapologetic Romance Readers 2018 challenge: MC/motorcycle romance
April 2020 re-read. I loved how Vina wouldn't give up on him, even though Ramsey flat out told her he couldn't promise her anything in return. That made the HEA all that much sweeter. Still 5 stars, and a keeper.
Original review: A Crow and a....moose? I loved every word! 5 stars
T.S. Joyce is a totally new writer to me, but like so many other writers has done in the past week (because of the quarantine situation we are in) this writer also offered a free sale on some of her books. And being someone who loves free books, I took this opportunity to get those books and after reading the blurbs I was immediately intrigued by them and decided to try one. I choose for the story ‘For the hope of a crow’, the first book in the ‘Red dead mayhem’ series because I had never read a story about a crow shifter before and I love MC stories so the combination of both in this story had my attention.
‘For the hope of a crow’ is a quick, fun, emotional, sexy read. I enjoyed it very much and it’s perfect if you have a few hours free and want to relax with a novella-length story. The main characters Vina and Ramsey couldn’t have been more opposite of each other but that made them just perfect for each other. Ramsay is this cold-hearted, deadly, alpha crow shifter of a MC club and Vina is this caring, lovely woman how is also stubborn, sassy, cute and clumsy. I loved her character very much! And her animal was a pleasant surprise too! But what struck me the most in the story was how both characters (and their animal side) were looking for love, how both were lonely, feeling like they didn’t deserve love but still longed for it, each in their own way. I’m so happy that they found each other and I adored how Vina had Ramsey’s back in every situation. We got both POV’s in the story. The secondary characters were interesting too.
The only thing that I missed a bit in the story was more detail about Ramsey’s past relationship. I can totally understand that in a quick read the main focus is on the romance now, but I would have liked more details or ‘better’ details about the time (timeline) that Ramsey spend with his first mate. But maybe that’s just me.
‘For the hope of a crow’ was a great story and it certainly made me want to read more of this series and read other books of this writer.
(If you’re a fan of the books of Suzanne Wright or the stories of Shelly Laurenston, give this story a try too.)
These crows are nothing but a hot mess. I did feel sorry for Ramsey, hated how he was into a girl who wasn't into him. What I couldn't understand though, was how did he not see it earlier and put a stop to things. I was glad when his crow realized what was going on and changed things.
At first I wasn't sure about Vina, she could have come off as super pathetic, but when Ramsey read her letter to the matchmaker my heart broke for her. It seemed like all her life she had been looking for one thing and never found it. I did like that that didn't stop Vina from still searching.
The way that these two dated was interesting. It worked for them, a good thing, because the rest of the group needs the two of them to be stable.
I look forward to reading more, to see how things will change for them all.
Oh I do so love me a dickhead that can redeem himself.
In all fairness I kind of loved him before reading this book because I can't help but love these broken hero's. Going in I wasn't sure where this story was going but I'm so happy with the road it took.
Ramsey is about as damaged as they come. Hung up on Tenlee and haunted by the past it's safe to say he was all kinds of fucked up. He didn't deny any of it wearing his damage as a shield. He understood that his broken was bringing everyone down but he couldn't stop himself from drowning in the darkness. He didn't choose this life it chose him. I loved him and all his sides. Under all that dark was a little sweet alota sexy and even a little funny. He's a character that has depth and I loved getting to see all those layers peel back showing everyone that he isn't as bad as one might think.
Vina is just the sweetest ever. Her endless rambling and hilarious inner dialogue had me in fits of giggles. She's a loner who just didn't fit. She wanted nothing more than to have someone to love and except her for her. She's unique and special, non judgemental and owned her flaws. She's a little pocket rocket! Fierce and protective in everything she believed in. I loved how hard she loved Ramsey.
The story didn't go how I expected it to go but that's not to say I was disappointed because I wasn't. I'm glad we got Ramsey's story! He deserved his happiness more so than most. I loved how the story unfolds and everything fit so perfectly. I connected to the characters, felt the struggles the hurt and the anger. I laughed, loved and sighed in utter content. It's a rollercoaster but as per this author she pulled another great story out the bag. I loved it hard and could of happily read more of them. The chemistry was so on point and while they are both so opposite they fit together. Not going to lie they are one of my favourites.
I'm all about murdery heroes, so I was 1000% sold on Ramsey from the moment he showed up in this universe. His character progression is pretty three dimensional, so I enjoyed that. I also liked that Vina is a moose; it's a pretty unconventional animal to shift into, and getting to learn about that was cool. Per every T.S. Joyce book, the sex scenes were steamy. This about sums up the things I enjoyed about the book.
Ramsey and Vina read like every other hero and heroine T.S. has written, though. Sometimes its hard to distinguish who is who because everyone is the same, just with a few different quirks. I can barely distinguish who is talking in some scenes. This book it was easier, as it's a new group, but in previous clans and series it got to be difficult. I also thought the interactions between Ten and Ramsey were a little unrealistic. After everything they went through and put each other through, I just don't see Ten willingly going into the forest with Ramsey to talk.
Maybe I just hyped this up too much in my head because I was really looking forward to Ramsey, but this just fell flat for me. I didn't not enjoy it, I just didn't find it as good as the rest of her books.
This book was different to other shifter themed stories I have read, purely due to the fact that I have not read something about crow shifters before. It was a nice and interesting change. I look forward to reading more from this series and finding out more about this shifter species.
I'll admit I largely tried this for the uniqueness factor. I don't think I've ever seen a book with a bird shifter as an mc and I find crows very interesting. But he's a douche that showed all likelihood of being an abusive ass. She's a moose...a moose shifter. That's different. But she's also really fucking boring and prissy. This wasn't gonna work for me so I decided to quit while I still had time to start something else for the night
It took me a long time to get used to this confusing, fast-moving, angry bunch of shifters. I couldn’t stop laughing in the beginning at the concept of a crow as a romantic lead, a shifter and being a king. Being an intimidating, fierce beast. This is the start of a series and in my opinion Joyce needs two books to get her rhythm.
This is a good story. I especially loved Vina. She didn't take anything from anyone, yet as tough as she was she stayed sweet and kind. I was rooting for her to get her happy ending.
Ramsey Hunt, Alpha of the Red Dead Mayhem crow Clan whom we've met in the OUTLAW SHIFTERS series. His Crow had chosen an Origin (Tenlee/Genie) as his mate but the bond never took cause she chose someone else. He went to war with the Two Claws Clan and the New Darby Clan. Yet he still had to let Ten go when she nearly ended her life in order to stop the war.
Now he slowly losing his mind and he was he was taking his entire Clan down the abyss with him. He was trying to hold on this his position as Alpha for as long as he could. Fate hasn't abandoned him, he met a beautiful and headstrong beauty who showed him papers saying he was her mate.
"What was a broken man to do!?"
All Vina Fiona Marsh wanted was a Crow shifter as a mate. She'd been pushed around by the men she dated and she was sick of it. So when a matched came up for her on the matching site she signed up on three years ago. She couldn't be happier.
Meeting Ramsey was am eye opener for her, she knew it wouldn't be easy to get the half crazed man to mate with her. Being a Moose shifter she craved a mate to have a family with, she was also looking for a loyal companion.
The sexy as sin man was rude to her yet she couldn't help but feel drawn to him. The more time they spent together, the more she realized something important. No matter what his Crow wanted Ramsey tried to play a danger game which left him losing his mind, body and soul to the feisty moose.
"The beating of your heart matters more than the beating of mine."
Vina had Ramsey's six, they both fit perfectly. She was a wonderful surprise, one he never thought he desired. And him with all his flaws won her heart just by being himself. She got to know his Crow and vice versa. A storm's heading for the Red Dead Mayhem Clan.
What a pleasure it was to get a glimpse of the Two Claws and the new Darby Clans. hehehe the encounter between Ten and Vina was juicy...Yup I can totally see those two becoming friends ;).
FOR THE HOPE OF A CROW is the first installment in T. S. Joyce's new series, RED DEAD MAYHEM. What an extraordinary, intriguing, emotional and astonishing ride to kick off this amazing new venture....5 fan-freakin-stastic stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This was a quick read for me. It worked well and I was happy to find some new shifter adventures. I think it's not really a full novel size, but it's not missing anything. Yep, I enjoyed it.
Both of the main characters have hidden strengths that are unexpected, carrying and nurturing, strength, courageous and bad to the bone. You will be surprised by which characteristics belong to whom.
I was honestly disappointed that Ramsey was getting a book. He was horrible, and I didn't see any way to fix that. He's still kind horrible, but he's some better, and I understand him more than I did previously. I felt bad for vina because Ramsey was still hung up on Tennslee, but that was explained pretty well and made sense. What didn't make sense to me was the gross Crow Chasers. Ramsey was with one 2 years ago, and I don't know if he was with any after that, but I'm confused now about the timeline with Tennslee and if she was his mate then. I realize they weren't mates all the way, but it's still weird and slutty if he was with a Chaser while Tennslee was there or while he was hung up on her. It makes him look too promiscuous, and it makes me dread more Mayhem books, because those crows have been with Chasers, too, so their poor mates are going to be subjected to that, and I'm not fond of slutty characters anyway. A little better judgment and actually valuing intimacy with the right person is nice. Too many books have characters with too many past partners, and it makes me not really like those characters. I don't expect them to be monks, but I do expect the characters to be people that don't use people for sex and to not have a million partners. Falling in love and stopping those ways doesn't make them good people. It doesn't undo the other stuff they've done or the people they've led on, even if it was accidental.
I liked the aspect of them being difference shifters than the usual cats or wolves. The shifter she was wasn't glamorous so that sort of appeal was lost to me sadly. I did like her fiesty side and I really enjoyed the story. I had wished I had found out the series previous to this... I feel like there needed to be a better communication otherwise you feel like you only have half of the story and that is annoying. I'm going to read the Saw bear series and work through that reading order which is on the website for the author and then come back to this series set. I think this series relates to the outlaw series but I'm not going to properly look into that until I've gone through Saw first.
I thought this was a nice introduction to this author and if her other books are like this I'm going to have an interesting few weeks/months working my way through her current books. So turns out I'm wrong and I first read this author in 2016 a book called Bloodrunner Dragon which I gave a flop of a 1 star. This from what I wrote two years ago seemed to be because it made very little sense based on the fact its a follow on series. I will try and read again, when I reach it, if I do. I think that is the only problem with doing these sort of series. Either make it VERY clear what is going on in terms of linking or don't link them.
4.5 stars: When I came across the discription for this story I knew I had to read it. I love MC reads and Shifter books, and Crows/Ravens are my spirit animal. This is also the first story that I have read from this author.
This was a unique take on both genres MC and Shifter. The author followed a few of the typical rules, but broken out of the mold to create her own unique and different world. The characters didn't follow traditional roles either. It was a refreshing read, with a great plot and funny lines. I loved Vina and though she was a great take on a female shifter. I am so used to MC reads being dark and gritty that it took me a few chapters to realize (and adjust) tgat thus was going to be a lighter read. There were some heart breaking moments with Ramsey, reguarding Tenlee, but it just made me fall harder.
I look forward to reading mire from this series and I might check out a few others from this author. I am going to save them, however; as my light, between dark reads. If youbare looking for a different read, one that breaks with tradition, give this story a chance. I recommend it greatly!
This is my first book from this author, so I felt a little bit like I was missing something -- because this, as I have found out, is a spin-off from another series. That being said? It's fine. It works without reading the main series, though it would very clearly be enhanced by reading those first. (I'll be definitely going back and reading them.)
I didn't think I was going to like our main pairing here, because our heroine (Vina) is... unlikeable at first, but not in a bitchy kind of way. She's just... perky and pliant and everything that shouldn't work with Ramsey. And then, she's a moose. Which shouldn't have worked. But Vina really, really grew on me, and became more enjoyable as the book went on, and I really love the fact she and Ramsey's crow have little 4am "dates." She helps soften Ramsey, and Ramsey helps draw her out of her pliable little shell.
Quite good. A few little hiccups in the writing, but definitely an author to keep reading. I was quite disappointed the next book wasn't already out! But... there's the main series and the rest of the back catalogue to keep me occupied. ;)
A short but good story about a clan of MC Crow shifters. The alpha, Ramsey, on a downward spiral and taking his clan with him. Into his life walks Virna, unannounced and certainly not asked for but very much needed! He needs saving cause he thinks he’s headed for death and taking his clan with him. So he takes a chance with the prim & proper leggy lady, bold enough to take a chance on him! Can she save them all? Can she make his crow betray another and fall in love with her? You’ll have to read the book! Only took me about 1.5 hours. 👍🏻
This just doesn't feel like a TS Joyce book. It's off. I guess I just miss the old series and the way she used to write, but since she started with Red, things feel wrong. Maybe it is just me, but I like a lot more laughs with my shifter books and not all gloom.
