A half-century-old curse lies over the small community of Ridgewater ever since Sarah Chase died in a car accident during a teen-angst-driven game of chicken back in 1962. She perished in the back seat of a 1961 Impala, accompanied by a group of boys who called themselves "the big four." She screamed as the car careened through a guardrail and plunged into the icy river water beneath. The four boys survived. Sarah did not.
Teenagers still race and party at the Milvian Bridge where Sarah's car went over, especially on the anniversary of her death, in hopes of catching a glimpse of her unsettled ghost.
But the partying teenagers of Ridgewater don't know that in life Sarah belonged to a group of teenage girls who practiced witchcraft. They don't now that Sarah seeks to use her powers from the grave to avenge her unrequited vendetta. They don't know that Stan Corelis, the driver of the Impala that terrible night and the unpronounced protector of Ridgewater, has passes away, freeing Sarah to unleash her anger.
What do you get when you combine "The Night Stalker" (1970's TV show), "Christine" by Stephen King & "American Graffiti"? You get "Dead Girl" by Craig Nybo. This book was the most entertaining book I have read in a long time. As a kid, I loved watching "The Night Stalker", a TV show about a Las Vegas reporter named Kolchak who gets involved in all sorts of supernatural stories. And, "Christine" still remains one of my favorite Stephen King books. So, this book really spoke to me.
It has ghosts, a possessed car, a decades-old vendetta, revenge, teenaged love & a smart-ass reporter. Add in drag racing, an awesome muscle car & what's not to love? As Block Vang says, every small town has its ghost story. And this one does not disappoint. I don't know if Mr. Nybo has written more in the Block Vang files, but I certainly hope so.
If you decide to read this book, I suggest you grab a Beach Boys album to listen to as you read. A soundtrack was all that was missing in this awesome ride!
I received an e-book copy of this book in exchange for a review. This was a very good ghost story. I am 63, and I still got chills! Well developed characters, fast pacing made for a truly enjoyable read. Like all small towns, this one has a haunted place. Newspaper reporter, Block Vang, gets a tip on a story in Ridgewater, Utah. He soon discovers that this ghost story is real. Many people have died because of this ghost, and many more will, if he can't find a way to stop her.
It had comedic touches, as Mr. Nybo does so well, interesting characters and good storytelling. Read and enjoy!
I've had a weird infatuation with ghost stories lately, but I'm finding that good ones are hard to come by. That's why I was thrilled in reading Dead Girl. It hit all the right notes: dark enough to make me feel disturbed, but mixed with an expert dose of mystery and humor to keep things enjoyable. Sufficiently creepy with an engrossing plot; Dead girl is equal parts Supernatural, The Ring, and Stephen King's Christine with a twist ending that will make you do a double-take. I loved Dead Girl, and heartily recommend it to anyone who like a good ghost story.
I enjoyed this book. The plot had a lot of twists and turns and I wasn't ever sure what was coming next. Basically just what I want in a horror/suspense novel. The main character was entertaining and read like a character like Sam Spade or Phillip Marlowe. I sometimes felt like the author let that voice overtake the other characters, so everyone sounded the same and I wasn't crazy about that. But it was entertaining, suspenseful and I liked the way it was written.
A big city reporter heads to a small town to unravel a half century old mystery which created a ghost who is killing people. The characters are so alive that the magic is hauntingly realistic. Nybo's work just gets better and better!
I was rivited from the first page and couldn't put it down. This book is scary and haunting with a whimsical undertow that made the characters human and relevant to the reader in a spellbinding fashion. I highly recommend this book. I hope maybe there may be another Block book in the future.
I really liked this book. I couldn't put it down. I love a good ghost story and this was one I met the author at a comic con and he recommended it for me I am so glad I took his advice. The story gripped me from page 1 and I couldn't put the book down until I was done.
