This Freedom Journey
Adrien Lockman is through with the political unrest and bloodshed in his home country of France, so he sets off to the Canadian territory's mountain frontier, in search of a place where a man can live his own life in peace. The last thing he expects to find is a woman, half-starved and half-frozen in a shack nestled among the towering peaks of the great Rocky Mountains.
Mary Standish thought she'd finally found a place where she was accepted, trapping with her husband for the Hudson Bay Company. But when he dies after a gruesome grizzly fight, she determines to carry on their work. After all, life in these remote mountains is better than enduring the scorn and snubs of "civilized" folk. When she's forced to face a winter harder than any she's endured yet, her stubbornness may just be the death of her. Until a stranger appears at her ramshackle door.
Adrien had planned to explore the mountain country all winter before he settles down to build a farm in the spring, but he can't leave this woman to die in the elements. I always love the rugged wilderness settings in this author's stories. Being snowed in together while also dealing with loss and loneliness accelerates the developing relationship between Adrien and Mary. I loved Adrien's gentle nature and Mary's appreciation of his kindnesses. She is hardly a damsel in distress, proving herself strong and willing to do the hard work it takes to survive. They come to rely on each other and with the various trials they encounter during the harsh winter, their mutual support builds a solid foundation.

I loved this wonderful novella! The main characters grabbed my heart right from the start and I was very invested in how things would work out for them.
This author always does a good job of creating such a vivid description of the vastness of of the wilderness! I feel the isolation along with the characters. Adrien and Mary were such interesting people. I loved learning a bit about their personal backgrounds.
Poor Mary had survived a lot of hard situations and I really felt for her. The need to be self-sufficient and strong enough to survive on her own made for what, on the surface, appeared to be a stubborn character. However, there was a lot more to Mary than she outwardly showed. She had a lot to learn about God’s love and Adrien was just the man to help her break free from the hurts of the past. He was a great character.
This novella is the prequel to the Heart of the Mountain series. Adrien and Mary show up later in this series, as well, so it was fun to see how their own romance began.

From the very beginning, I was pulled into the setting of this book. I loved the characters. The romance was believable. And for it being a novella, nothing felt rushed.

Right from the first page the author had me and I felt that I was in the blizzard that was hitting the Canadian Rockies, and praising God when he stumbles on the Cabin.
We are given a woman who has suffered incredible loss and a man who has left his home in France and put them together in the middle of the wilderness, and now we are about survival.
I hoped from the beginning to the that these two-lonely people would end up together, but I didn’t know until the end how things would work out the way I wanted.
I received this book thought Celebrate Lit Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

I am so loving this Heart of the Mountains series by Misty M. Beller, and This Freedom Journey is another winner! The setting is stunning, even in its dangerous conditions, and Beller masterfully paints word pictures that show you how treacherous it would have been – and may leave you bundled up under a pile of quilts to ward off the biting cold even though it’s 100 degrees outside...
Adrien and Mary are both very compelling characters who are survivors by nature – though the harsh conditions of a Canadian Rockies winter tests those survival skills to the brink. They must rely on each other, and it’s out of this inter-dependence that a sweet friendship and then, of course, a swoony romance is born. Mary is one tough cookie, determined to survive without anyone’s help. And yet, Adrien’s steady presence and his quiet faith wraps around her and offers to bear her burdens for a while. Together they are a solid team, and though the wilderness winter is fierce, so is their determination.
Bottom Line: This Freedom Journey is a beautiful story of survival, friendship and faith. It’s also a tender and swoony romance set against the backdrop of the harsh but gorgeous Canadian Rocky Mountains. You will be emotionally invested in these characters and their stories, especially if you’ve followed the series from the beginning and already know Adrien and Mary later in life. The short page count does not detract from the pace at all, and nothing felt rushed or unnatural. Another gorgeous novella from Misty M. Beller!

My review today is on the Historical Western Christian Romance, This Freedom Journey. This is a Heart of the Mountains Novella. This book was sent to me and I'm under no obligation to review it but I really liked and I know you will too. This book is well written, heart warming, and full of faith.
Adrien Lockman left France and came to Canada to start over. He has found a valley he wants to settle in but before settling down he wants to go through the mountains. He is hiking up one of these mountains when a blizzard comes up and he can't see his hand in front of his face. When he feels all is lost he bumps into a wooden structure. He knocks several times; finally a woman opens the door. The cabin is almost as cold inside as it was outside. It looks almost empty except for a pile of furs on the floor in the corner. Adrien was surprised when the woman understands him and is able to speak some french. She collapses. He uses his own wood and heats up the cabin and fixs food for her.
Mary Standish is in bad shape. Her husband died three months ago. She is pregnant and hasn't been able to find food for days. She would just give up if not for her unborn child. She opens the door to a stranger and allows him to come in and bring in his mule. He brings in wood and food and begins to take care of her. For the first time in three months she begins to feel safe but she can't rely on him. He will leave soon.
A journey of two souls struggling to survive in this mountain wilderness. God has a plan for these two, a good plan and not for evil. God has a plan for you too. A plan for a hope and a future. Give Him your heart and watch turn your life around.

As always, I enjoyed another good tale with Misty Beller.
I enjoyed hearing the blizzards and learning right along with Mary.
I loved ppl cared enough about each other to take care of one another in hard times.
Misty is a great storyteller and has the talent to make you feel like you're actually in the mountains.
If I recall, these were the Rockies.
I had the pleasure of going there in 2005 and enjoyed every minute of it.
My favorite was Estes park and from where we stood you could see the Great Divide.
There was about 20 inches of snow on top and it was beautiful!!
I really enjoyed reading how our daily chores are much like today's only a little harder without all the conveniences of today.
I always ask myself what would the pioneers of yesterday think aboutour modern times and how would they react?
Im so blessed to be able to time travel with my books and the authors who make it possible.

I just can’t stay away from this series or any books by this author. By far my favorite book thus far from her. I love the two tangled souls that meet in the moment of desperation from the winter weather. It is a fascinating and heart warming read, with sweet moments and moments that take your breath away.
I really think that Misty Beller knows her stuff when it comes to writing historical novels. As a reader you will feel transported to the setting and immersed in the characters, I really loved the winter that was cruel and unrelenting in this book giving readers a since of what trust and faith can really get one through.

A french hero, a strong willed widowed pregnant woman, a fierce cold snap with high winds, a cave, a lynx! I mean what more could you ask for in a book!? I have really enjoyed this series by Misty Beller, but this novella might be my favorite. Her ability to write a scene that pulls you in is amazing. I felt like I was trudging through the wind with Adrien and Domino, and shivered a time or two. When Mary and Adrien were about to enter the cave, I think I held my breath for a moment waiting for a bear or bats to come out of it. There was adventure throughout the entire story, as I have found is always the case in this series which is probably why I like them so much.
Then we have the characters. I'm going to be honest, I didn't like Mary at first. I thought it was silly that she was hiding her pregnancy. Wouldn't Adrien have been able to help her more knowing that? But it was just her nature. Adrien was a stranger, and she had been on her own for months. You can't blame her for being a little leery, I just personally wanted her to spill the beans so to speak. But I quickly overlooked that and started to be amazed at how strong she was. Even after something horrible happening to her, she was still right there with Adrien trying to help survive in whatever way needed. I actually liked the fact that she wasn't immediately drawn to his french charm. Let's face it, if I was alone, stranded, and this handsome man with a french accent came around, I'm pretty sure I would blush and swoon internally right away ;)
In the midst of adventure, Misty Beller easily weaves in the great message that we all need to hear. It is not forced, nor preachy. It is written delicately, yet speaks straight to your heart. The story moves quickly, as is needed with a novella, but it wasn't too fast moving in my opinion. And - get your fans ready girls - the kissing scene in this book is certainly fan worthy! All in all, this is a lovely addition to an already wonderful series. A series that I cannot seem to get enough of!

This Freedom Journey is a highly enjoyable, fast-paced novella filled with non-stop action that had me holding my breath a couple of times. There is definitely no room to get bored with this one!
Mary is one tough cookie, let me tell you! She is struggling to survive an excruciatingly hard winter in the Canadian Rockies when Adrien happens upon her half starved, three months pregnant, and totally all alone. None of this stops Mary from doing all she can to keep doing all she must. Mary works SO hard and is SO stubborn it’s exhausting. She’s been on her own for a while and cannot trust that Adrien won’t be taken from her too. Out of a sense of self-preservation, Mary refuses to rely on anyone or anything including God. I like Mary’s character, and I appreciate message the reader can learn through her.
To me, Mary represents us humans when we go at life on our own — when we rely on our own selves, when we do all the work on our own without anyone’s help, when we figure the answers out to our problems with no help from anyone. When Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV), “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” He is thinking about all of us who have enslaved ourselves to the yokes of our own making. Yokes of our own making provide nothing but pain, suffering, and weariness. But Jesus … His yoke brings peace, rest, and provision. Mary eventually learns this lesson, but not before some serious heartache and loneliness.
This Freedom Journey is a lovely novella that I very much enjoyed reading. I do highly recommend this story. It is well written and engaging, and the characters are very realistic. If you are looking for a quick, adventurous, sweet story then This Freedom Journey is definitely the book for you!

A historical romance set in the Canadian Rockies
My rating is 4 stars
Adrien stumbled through the blizzard and was relieved to find a shack in which he could take shelter from the almost white-out conditions. He was stunned to find a half-starved, half-frozen woman there and set about to care for her as best as he could. But he underestimated Mary Standish.
I really liked Adrien’s noble and kind manner. His faith obviously directed his actions – he was a great example of “follow me as I follow Jesus”. He had great intuition in how to react to Mary’s fears and her grief.
Author Misty M. Beller captured the sense of being all alone in the middle of the wilderness quite well. I was able to picture the little shack with the dirt floor and cold wind reaching its icy fingers through the cracks. Brr. The beauty of the Canadian Rockies is a sight I would love to see with my own eyes one day, though I think I’ll plan that trip for spring or autumn. . .
Though the relationship between Adrien and Mary developed quickly for modern standards, the way that she went from being almost terrified of him to trusting him did make sense and worked well, especially given the need they had to depend on each other.
The overall tone of the story was contemplative and the pace was gentle, if perhaps a little bit slow, at the beginning.

The intricate details of the wilderness the author describes makes me feel like I have transported back in time. I could feel the hard winds and the snow as it covered the terrain. It was very hard to survive during the winter and having to rely on traps wasn't easy. Mary is a force to be reckoned with. She has survived the harsh land alone and isn't sure who this stranger is that has found her place. Mary has been trying to carry on the work her husband was doing, but the winter had other ideas. I loved reading about her shack and how determined she was to survive on her own.
Adrien stumbles upon Mary's place and finds her not in good health. I'm really surprised she allowed him to stay, but in her weakened state she had no choice. He proves to be helpful in providing food and slowly her strength returns. I wonder what they thought of each other? It's not everyday you find a traveler in a storm but Adrien is glad he has shelter for now. Mary is very quiet and you can tell in her eyes she has suffered greatly. Will she learn to trust Adrien?
There was much danger in the wilderness and the scene with Mary and the donkey was heart stopping. The author clearly has a keen skill of writing where you can picture the action with her words. I am impressed with how tough Mary is and appreciate that the author made her a self sufficient woman. The story is well written and kept me glued to the story. The story has danger, hope and finding your way to God. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and reading about their transformations.

Adrien stumbles upon Mary's place and finds her not in good health. I'm really surprised she allowed him to stay, but in her weakened state she had no choice. He proves to be helpful in providing food and slowly her strength returns. I wonder what they thought of each other? It's not everyday you find a traveler in a storm but Adrien is glad he has shelter for now. Mary is very quiet and you can tell in her eyes she has suffered greatly. Will she learn to trust Adrien?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
As Adrien Lockman explores the mountain country of the Canadian Rockies in the middle of a horrific blizzard, he finds himself at a shack where a woman lives, sick, half starved and half frozen. Glad to find shelter, Adrien goes to work building a fire and cooking food that will sustain the lady until he can make more provisions. Though his plan is to keep exploring, there is no way he can leave this woman alone. But will she trust him enough to let him stay, but what choice does she have?
I really enjoyed Adrien and Mary’s story. And though Mary was in pretty bad condition when Adrien found her, he underestimated her strength and determination. Mary was quite able to take care of herself. Or so she thought. But without Adrien’s caring for her, she could have very well lost her life.
Ms. Beller does a fantastic job of describing the scenes of the Canadian mountains lifestyle. Not many people around to help, so the journey to find help was treacherous, especially in the middle of the winter. A lifestyle I don’t think I could handle. But I love reading about these mountain people who have chosen this journey.

Historical romances are always a joy to listen to, and this one is absolutely beautiful. This is my first Misty M. Beller book, and I loved it. Although part of a series, this book stands alone. Adrien Lockman unhappy with his home in France, makes his way to Canada and finds Mary Standish in her isolated cabin. The weather is horrible, Mary is recently widowed, pregnant and struggling under the harsh conditions. When these two meet up, it's like a miracle for each of them, though neither will admit it at first. Mary is a very strong character, wanting to do things for herself. The unexpected cold has her at a disadvantage and when Adrien shows up, his help is definitely needed. These two have a little banter back and forth, but their situation has forced them together. Adrien is the perfect gentleman, helpful and has come into her life at the perfect time. But has it been long enough since her husband's death? And how long will he stay? There are a lot of feelings they each have to work through and in the end find their way to each other.
Leonor A Woodworth has a way of storytelling that always captures my attention. She can give inflections in her voice that drag you in and make you feel each thing the character does. In this case, Mary has a lot happening, with her mourning, her baby and the donkey(you have to listen to hear about him!), she goes through a lot of different situations and moods. What a satisfying prequel to Heart of the Mountains series! We meet Mary and Adrien through the first two books of the series but don’t learn about their love story until this novella. Their steadfast devotion to each other made them endearing secondary characters but this novella truly brings out their relationship and romance. As is Misty Beller’s style, the stark yet majestic beauty of the Canadian mountainous winter is breath-taking and real. Her writing transports the reader to 1800s Canadian mountains as the winds howl, snow and ice prevail, and man must fight the elements to survive. Even in the midst of this hardship, a tender romance develops between Mary and Adrien.

Misty Beller is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her books are refreshing and greatly enjoyable. She speaks to your heart with her stories.
This is the story of Mary, who is determined to survive and continue doing the work she and her now deceased husband started out to do by moving to the great Rocky Mountains. Mary is strong-willed but sometimes that’s not the best thing, especially when the odds are stacked strongly against you and you’re struggling to survive. Still Mary prevails and overcomes the struggle she faces in territory that she’s still coming to learn about. It’s better than where she started and she refuses to go back.
Adrien is strong and capable of survival in these great mountains but he never expected he’d come across this waif of a woman struggling to make it through the brutal winter they faced. He couldn’t just walk away and leave her. He knew she faced ultimate death if he did. She may even face it with him there helping her but helping was better than just moving on. There was plenty of time to move on in the Spring and start that farm he’d been dreaming of. But really what good was it without someone to enjoy it all with?
The story of Mary and Adrien is one of survival that builds in to love. They need one another and they come together through struggle and strength like no other. You’ll truly enjoy reading there story. Just another of Misty’s wonderful novels bringing characters to life.

"This Freedom Journey" by Misty M. Beller is just as good as the other two books in the series.
While reading this novella I ask my husband, "Do people really eat fox and wolf" he replied "I guess so, if they are hungry enough" I replied " Well in this book they do"!
I really like this series which is surprising because generally I don't like survival stories but these books feel more like a story about people rising above their struggles than a book about surviving the wilderness and the elements of nature.
This book shows that we don't need to preach but to show God's love through our actions.
There are a couple of scenes that really made me want to cry!
I think my favorite character has to be an animal named Domino. Ok, I admit all the characters in this book are my favorite because there are only three.
Even though "This Freedom Journey " is part of a series it can be read as a standalone as well as the other two books. There is a fourth book but since I haven't read it I can't say anything about it except to say it is on my to be read list.
I recommend "This Freedom Journey " by Misty M. Beller to any reader who likes clean love story and survived stories and Christian Historical Romances.

He needs shelter, she needs help...
OK, I'll admit it. I think This Freedom Journey is my favorite book so far in Misty M. Beller's wilderness-set Heart Of The Mountains series. Significantly shorter than the previous two books I was still absorbed in the story of Adrien and Mary, oh, and I can't forget their friend Domino. I did think one character's recovery from a serious health incident was a little bit fast for reality but who am I to know for sure. Aside from that I did enjoy this book quite a bit and can't wait to listen to the next one.
I did listen to this story as an audiobook. I sincerely appreciated the fact that the narrator was the same as the previous two. This was excellent for continuity and I just plain think her voice is an easy one to listen to. I didn't notice any glitches or hiccups in the production aspect. The sound was clear and the recording was good.
This Freedom Journey was an enjoyable listen and the audiobook did justice to Misty M. Beller's story. If you like historical romance with a faith message and have a little time on your hands why not check into this audiobook.

Another very interesting historical novella by Beller. The story opens up in a blinding blizzard with a man and his donkey stumbling along knowing for sure he is going to freeze to death soon. He can see nothing but the swirling snow so with outstretched hands hoping to feel the mountain that is surely somewhere in front of him, but then his hand touches wood. It cannot be a wooden structure in the middle of nowhere. Surely no one can be living here. Inside he finds a near dead woman, no heat and no food. He takes shelter for himself and his donkey intending to leave on the morrow when the blizzard is over. The next day after trying to get a little food in her from his meager supply, he finds he cannot leave her to die alone although she has told him to be on his way, that she will be alright. Beller has written an excellent story with very strong characters and even a lovable donkey. After the stormy blizzard, the sun breaks through literally and into a warm love story that will surely leave you wanting to read the next book in the Heart of the Mountain series. I've only read a few books by Misty M. Beller and have found them quite enjoyable. This one did not disappoint either. I loved the characters and the trust they built between one another. The Hero, Adrien Lockman, is such a charming character and has so much to give to the heroine, Mary Standish. First Adrien must earn Mary's trust to break through her tough exterior.
Adrien finds Mary starving and nearly frozen to death and works diligently to save her. Mary is distrustful of Adrien, but he bides his time and does everything he can to protect her from the elements and herself.
Will Adrien break through Mary's defenses and create a bond between them? Or will Mary ask Adrien to leave as soon as she is strong enough to fend for herself again? Check this book out and see. I hope you will like it as much as I did. Enjoy!

Misty Beller's This Freedom Journey is an enjoyable read, with two characters pitted against a winter storm. I live in the south, so it's hard to imagine winter as it is, but to imagine winter in a day without modern conveniences--wow. Misty did a beautiful job of creating a storyworld where I almost shivered while the temp outside was 106.
Mary and Adrian don't know each other at all, but the threat of winter forces them to work together. I loved Adrian's faithfulness. He was a strong, noble character. Mary, while hardened by a difficult past, is likable because of what she's facing. You feel for her, deeply.
I don't think I've ever read a book with such a small cast, but it worked. The beginning of the book picks up only a few months after Mary's husband died, so I wasn't sure about reading a romance so quickly, however it was tastefully done.
The book is short and sweet, which makes a read in which you can fully invest yourself in the book. I highly recommend this book. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. No review was required.

It's 1833, and trapper Adrien Lockman is lost in the Canadian mountain winter when he runs across what looks like an abandoned cabin. But there is someone there—a woman. Alone. With no fire and what looks like no food, in the middle of a blizzard. Mary Standish has been alone in her cabin since her husband died three months ago.
The need to survive brings Adrien and Mary together, but it's God who keeps them together. Mary is amazed by Adrien, that even his mule does his bidding. It's a strong story of sharing faith in the most natural way possible.
Stories like this renew my respect for the men and women who colonised Canada and the northern states of the US. I am not a winter person, and it amazes me that people choose to live places where the weather is the biggest threat to survival. I haven't read many stories set in the French-speaking part of Canada in this time, so I enjoyed that aspect.
But it was the natural way Adrien shared his faith which most impressed me. Recommended.

We begin this story in a deathly blizzard. Adrien Lockman has left his homeland and had ventured into the Rocky Mountains of Canada. He realizes if he doesn't get to shelter soon both he and his mule Domino will freeze to death. God shows him the way to a little shelter in the middle of nothing and in it he finds Mary, she appears to be on deaths door herself. Mary Standish is alone in the wilderness, cold and hungry and Adrien has arrived just in time to help save her.
Misty Beller takes us on the journey to show us Adrien and Mary's story. It is a touching story of trust and struggles and then love. Such a sweet love story but told in a way that is believable for the time we are reading about. I received an early copy to read and review. I loved this novella. It gives us the backstory to Aunt Mary who we met in book 1 when Emma and Simeon travel north to Canada. I love this entire series and highly recommend not only this book but the other two as well.

Misty M. Beller books involve the wilderness, the hardships, the tragedies the frontiersmen confront, and she will describe it so you will feel like you are there with the characters. The characters face adversity, deal with faith or lack thereof, Indians, people that can't be trusted or can they? I've read all of Misty's book in this series and it always enjoy revisiting characters that had their own stories. Each book can be read as a stand alone and when a former character is introduced into another book there is enough background information to keep you from guessing but not so much you will be bored.

Adrien is trying to find shelter for himself and his mule. He can barely see his hand in front of his face as they plod forward hoping for divine intervention. When he is about to lose hope, he comes upon a ramshackle cabin in the middle of the wilderness with a small woman with blue eyes. She is obviously near death and he wants to help her to heal and protect her from certain death.
As they spend time together, Mary begins to trust that Aiden is a good man. Adrien is attracted to Mary and wants a future with her. He believes in a God who will help him as he trusts that he knows what is best for his life. He wants Mary to have that same trust and come to know God and his ways. There are wolves, severe weather and difficult times for both of them. There is a happy ending and it is a clean story with no sex or foul language.

Following the death of her husband, Mary is alone and pregnant in northwestern Canada. She's on the verge of freezing or starving when a Frenchman stumbles into her cabin. As the two brave a blizzard, they grow close.
This is one of those stories where it feels inevitable that two people will fall in love. After all, they're stranded in a blizzard together! Just once, I'd like to read a stranded together story where the two don't fall in love! That said, this is a pleasant romance, and I did enjoy reading it. I do have to say, though, that while the book was a bit slow at first, Adrien and Mary fell in love quickly. (Too quickly??? Maybe. Probably. At least in my opinion.) 3-1/2 stars.

This is book three in the Heart of the Mountains series but can be read as a standalone so don’t hesitate if you haven’t read the first two in the series.
I chose to read this on a summer day that was in the 90s. Probably a good thing since all the snow storms were great for cooling me down. Author Misty Beller made them seem so real I was waiting for the wind to start howling outside.
This book is a journey of learning to trust again in the face of adversity. The danger of the story will keep you on the edge of your seat. The sweet, clean romance will warm your heart. Both Mary and Adrien are strong but vulnerable characters who were well written. You will love them. If you enjoy historical fiction I recommend this book.
