Nephilim Falling is the prequel to the Trenton Investigations series. I read this book first, as I always prefer to start from the very beginning.
It was a good read, I was a little unsure at the beginning of the book whether I would like it, but I soon got into it and the end left me wanting to pick up the next book straight away. The characters were interesting, some likeable and some that I was unsure of. There's a good mystery to the story which quickly draws you in and that's what keeps you reading. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book, hopefully Lex will still kick ass and I'm also hoping that we'll learn a bit more about Wes.
This is a fast-paced, YA urban fantasy that I suspect is perfect for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and similar TV shows (which I've never watched but have heard a lot about). I enjoyed the simplicity of the world-building --- half-angels and half-demons interacting in some ways you'd suspect and some ways you wouldn't. A fast, fun read.
The thing Alexis Margaret Jane Trenton (thankfully just Lex; although there is Sexy Lexy if you're a BFF; or Niblet if you're her older brother - confusing right?) struggles with most, isn't the thoughts or the skills of chasing down demons to kill or capture their arse, its the thing her older brother Damian tries to protect her from. His theory that she needs protecting from the dangers of life, is the facade he uses to masquerade the thing he really thinks she needs protection from: herself. In her rebellion, she of course does the very things that seem on the surface, to support Damian's presumption. Its like when a parent tells an adult child that they're being childish, and then no sooner have the words left their mouths, the adult stamps their feet while yelling at mum or dad.
Like said child, Lex couldn't find the restraint to wait in the car as she's been told time after time. When the perp Damian is after, a demon frog-man she decides to affectionately call Kermit, is seen to be slipping away. Chasing Kermit for a short time triggers the rather painful lesson that Kermit is only too happy to instruct her on. Being a demon he promptly reinforces the lesson that he's far less flimsy than she is. Lex only has her mother's half demon genes to rely upon. Covered in demon sized warts now leaking black pus, thanks to some 'minor' damage Lex manages to inflict, Kermit is soon only too happy to play. The first few attacks that Lex managed can be attributed to training by Damian and a decade of gymnastics.
Once Kermit realises she's unwilling to allow his flight from capture, Kermit engages in earnest. Like his evolutionary cousins, amphibious toads and frogs, that secrete toxins from warts and from their skin respectively, Kermit's black oozing pus becomes a further caution. Lex must avoid coming in contact with the poison that flows throughout his veins, to be secreted in that puss. After several charges by the three-hundred pound adversary that fail to slip under Lex's finely tuned reactions, habituated by thousands of hours of the conditioning necessary for them to react on instinct. Changing tactics Kermit resorts to a further adaptation he shares with the amphibian that denotes his demon-hybrid name: frog-man. His tongue shoots out in the blink of an eye, fast enough to bypass Lex's reflex and reaction time.
The sticky saliva dripping projectile covers the ten foot gap without a worry over reach. The feral tip of Kermit's tongue comes to rest on her chest. The gag inducing attack, that is, if she could move her throat sufficiently enough to gag, drips a foul smelling gelatinous liquid which slides further down her cleavage, after securing itself around her throat. It'd have to be the worst possible way in the world that you could imagine a guy licking between your boobs. Perhaps if Kermit wasn't leaking black toxic pus and trying to choke her to death, then she might've been able to envisage what it'd feel like under intimate circumstances... no, the girl whose never been missed couldn't imagine it from that angle at all.
Needing only to incapacitate Kermit long enough for Damian or Wes, his fellow operative, to arrive Lex starts hoping in earnest that they're well and truly on the way. The air that's rapidly becoming toxic to her lungs, sparks a bonfire burning throughout her chest. The pulsing drumbeat of her pounding heart echoes a deafening roar that's overpowering any other sound that could be reaching her ears. Unable to breathe or pull the sticky gel hand like toy on meth from her throat, Lex can't help but hope 'Killed by Kermit' doesn't make it onto her tombstone. Her rising panic questions again where the reinforcements are. When Kermit further makes a powerful flick of his head, it causes Lex to land very badly on an arm. Now it's no longer the pounding staccato of her pulse that's assaulting her ears, its the cracking sound that's similar to a twig snapping loudly. With air now reaching her lungs, Lex surprises even herself as a shrill blood-curdling scream is unceremoniously ripped from her throat. With her chips now spent or cashed in its the actual fighters that prevent her loss of life.
In a much quicker, but not nesrly quickly enough timeframe, Lex arrives back at school after her enforced sick leave break spanning two weeks. By the fourth day after her near murder by Kermit young Lex was climbing the walls in boredom. After putting the requisite number of bullets in his target's head, the one he'd needed to capture alive but couldn't risk it with Lex's life on the line, Damian had promptly taken her to the doctor in the morgue of their nearest hospital. As a trusted human he was given the secret that must remain. He'd patched Humpty back together as well as he could for the umpteenth time. This instance included the setting of her bones, and the required stitching up. Thanks to her demon blood she didn't need much else.
So it's at lunchtime in the library when her best friend Elena, a.k.a. dark chocolate goddess, tracked her down to spill her latest earth shattering news. With the arrival of Elena and her latest crush scheduled to arrive soon after, any and all incomplete homework ceased within thirty seconds. Elena tells Lex that the newest guy at school, Lucas, could be the one. Lex didn't much see the point in reminding her best friend that she changes 'the one' roughly as quickly as Lex's health break took. Not when in the back of her mind she's worrying about whether her absence has caused her to shift to number two, on the podium of her bestie's attention.
On catching just her first glimpse at Mr. One, the guy her BFF thinks will be the one to cash in her v-card with, her socially awkward profile becomes a mess because there's now an incredibly hot man stick added to the foray. After stumbling to even produce the socially accepted words, shaking Lucas's hand signs off on the freakiest reaction to a school boy of all time. Had she actually had a baseline comparison to Lex would've predicted it as of all time. Compounded in symphony, the moment the cogs click correctly into place its revealed that his otherness is the same aura Damian gives off, that of a nephilim. Third wheel ought to get a lot easier at least, for there's no foreseeable reasons why she'd now be spending time outside of school hours with Lanie (the name he's given BFF in under two weeks, sarcasm intended) and Lucas.
Whether full or half blooded it didn't matter, they all had more in common than they'd ever be prepared to admit. In the case of mating with humans, they were both as guilty as the other. Its only that angels considered it an 'oopsie' where demons were only too happy to get it on when feeding, or simply to sow their seed. Instead there's the typical emotions of fear, disgust, and loathing that make the obvious surfaces of the cracks in the visage. Most tried to keep it civil for the purpose of making sure that their origins are hidden from Sentinels. This group uses identification as the tool that then allows them to extinguish so many different coloured lights. As best she could tell it was the full blooded angels and demons who had access to Empyrean and Sheol respectively, who had it best.
Unless they need to travel between dimensions, such as for the purposes of feeding and effing, then at least they have a place to hide from the sentinel attention that always ends badly. The only half breeds who make it into either alternate dimension were the enslaved and used, like Wes. But like her its the half breeds who have it hardest. Freedom meant living on Earth and doing whatever is necessary to stay out of sentinel sights, or the hands of angels and demons that abscond those they enslave. They had to maintain absolute anonymity if they were to avoid torture and death, or at best they'd be sequestered on some reservation in the arse-end of the world. Sentinels see their purpose for existing is to wipe the perceived blights from the face of the earth. To sentinels its a pure human occupation that is in their minds, the only rightful way for the mortal realm to be inhabited. They'd likely be pretty surprised, and raucously outraged, to know that half breeds weren't quite as rare as they might think.
In an unauthorised baptism of fire Lex gets her hands dirty and with that taste she's hooked. Her interpretation of her brother's words, though, that he wants more for her because he dislikes the chosen profession he'd made, is taken out of context. The way she takes it is a reflection in part based on the guilt she feels. Because she doesn't want to have been a burden on his life, since they lost their shared mother when she never made it home from a trip to the shop to get groceries, when he'd become the sole supporter. Lex sees his words as meaning that because he had to look after her, that its her fault he didn't get the life he wanted. That by getting a job to pay the bills before he was able to get through whatever education and training would've best situated him to get the job of his dreams, that it's her fault that he's doing things he doesn't want to.
The tantalising first tastes don't stop there for our leading lady. Whilst she begins the path to experiencing her womanhood in further New says there's an apparent aerial killer focus on her counterparts. The Nephilim are taking hits and the number of sunk battleships are growing. In her own says and for her own goals, Lex finds it impossible to stand back and let things be. This brings danger into their lives which was only ever a matter of time. Her first encounters aren't always the ones you'd hope for. The Trenton household have reached the turning points in several aspects of their lives. The problems are here to stay, and all they can do is to work them through to a natural conclusion. Putting it off and away is only compounding what just be done.
Action aplenty starts in the first few pages and goes right through to the conclusion that hints at where the next book will go. Suspense, drama, first loves, jealousy, and further adjectives are warranted, as too the reading of this prequel. Intrigue and the need to find out what's happening next, and what will that cause to happen next are the burning questions about the drive you forth. A little fighter who is coming into her own entices readers, and the bullsy way she experiences life is going to captivate plenty who like me, they'll want to see where it goes. Not all characters will be standing at the end of the day, but those that are will be stronger: even if it's only through the bitterness they'll need to work through as Lex takes the series forward. I loved it, stopping only a couple short periods to give my eyes a rest. Five stars and an author that's going to have works you'll be guaranteed to enjoy. An Action Aplenty Romp!

I will start by saying I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Usually this is really hard for me because it makes me want to be super complimentary, but I'm not naturally a positive person and I am no good at faking it- but yay, there's no need to do that here! Blarhh this book was so good. It made me feel things. I hadn't read something that kept me up all night for awhile and it got me loving books again. The first chapter had me hooked, so I recommend downloading a sample because if you like that you will like the rest.
The heroine is not only tough but resilient. When things don't go her way she dusts herself off and keeps trying. Despite her young age, she doesn't feel young as the book progresses. She's gutsy, independent, she fights, she's interested in sex and she tries very hard to be a loyal friend. Though she sometimes stupidly puts herself in dangerous situations, you can understand why and are rooting for her to basically just get older and more experienced. I like adult stories. I like profanity and violence. I usually find myself really annoyed with books set in high school, but the story quickly develops so that it doesn't feel like it's set in high school at all.
The romance was confusing to my emotions- yes, in a way that I liked. Because I wanted her to be with two different characters and I kept changing my mind. Their intentions are both unclear, even to themselves.
It somewhat baffles me that this book is a prequel. How is it not just the first book in the series? How could the series actually be better? What is going to happen next- you mean I don't get to find out what happens immediately after the end of this?! I want to know all the answers now and after reading I immediately went to buy the next book and was mega bummed to find it's not out yet.
It starts with huge fight scene with a 300lb frog then morphs into a murder mystery with attitude. From the opening sequence I was expecting a very different book. I was expecting the usual demon hunting gig. I was wrong. I loved the mystery and whodunnit aspect of this book as that is so unusual in this genre but don't think it's a stereotypical mystery. It certainly isn't. There's so much to this story that you really can't define it. The goodies and baddies aren't who you expect either. If there's one thing about this that I don't like it's Lexi, she's a whiny, selfish brat. Too big for her boots and doesn't think before heading into danger despite the dire consequences she gets into. Most of the time I just want to smack some sense into her. Thankfully she does have some redeeming qualities. She has a streak of what is right and wrong a mile wide and will head into danger for all the right reasons. She wants to protect people and right wrongs and get rid of any evil dangers. The other characters are great pity Lexi doesn't respect them more at times. I know it's a big thing to dislike the main character but I can still highly recommend this book. Despite her character flaws she's still an interesting character. Other than that I can find no fault with this book. The story is interesting and definitely a page turner. It keeps you on your toes with unexpected twists and turns (especially the cliff hanger). Can't wait for the next one! If you like multi-dimensional books that can't be defined, keep you guessing, then you'll love it. It has great characters (despite Lexi's idiocy), compelling plot and story arc. Great book!
I think each book is it's own beast. Not all are created equally, and not every book of a similar genre is going to be enjoyable for everyone that likes that genre in general. I've given this book 5 stars for what it is. It is not an epic, sprawling fantasy that takes you through different countries while saving the world....but it doesn't try to be. I find Lex Trenton to be extremely enjoyable to read about and I think this book is a really good look at what makes her tick (the first Trenton story I got was further along the timeline) and lets you get to know her brother which I really appreciated.
I really enjoyed this story full of half-breeds, angels and demons and whoa I'm definitely itching to get my hands on the next book. The characters were definitely real and raw and I felt like I was right there with them feeling what they felt. I enjoyed this interesting fantasy world and would love to learn more about it. There's so many questions that I have especially with the crazy ending! I recommend this book to UF lovers.
Great story, great author. Keeps the reader enthralled. Has a great, "I didn't see that coming" towards the end. Love it when an author can surprise you like that. Love the change of pace where her heroine know what she is and is learning to live with it. Have to read the next in line to see where now the author is taking me. I invite you to come along for the ride. It is exciting.
Surprisingly deep action-packed paranormal romance. Other reviewers can give a better synopsis of the plot...however, in no way did I take this as a young-adult novel.
Since I am well past that time in life, I had no trouble with the gore, violence, first sexual intercourse, and story arc. What makes this young-adult is Lexi's age, which is about 18, when she has to make a decision on whether to attend college or pursue her goal in life: become a P.I. just like her brother. Further, she feels invulnerable (and why wouldn't she when she has two protectors she is living with?) and makes hasty decisions to pursue the criminal leads without backup.
Lexi's boyfriend is hot, in an instant-attraction way. Thank goodness it is not fated. I won't give it away, but I see how she is misinterpreting the signals. The kisses and sex left me needing a small fan on my face, and I had to angle my iPad away from my husband lest he notice...ha ha.
The surprise for me, as I lay awake last night, was in realizing that the book has a strong theme about racism. As a half-demon following her brother, who is actually a nephilim, Lexi is an atypical teen who naturally does not have the racist learning that her bestie does. But everyone's ideas of what a demon, a nephilim, an angel, or other paranormal are allows us to examine our own preconceived notions and tribalistic tendencies without the trappings of modern society's notions. This is the best that sci-fi and fantasy can offer, allowing us a new dimension to examine why and how we teach bigotry and extremism to our young. You don't need to realize this to enjoy the story, and really, when I was younger I was terrible at recognizing the themes in english class.
Precusor to a new urban fantasy (I think?) series this was quite engaging. I do think it was much more exposition happy than I tend to enjoy however.
Also Team Wes. If that's a thing. Mostly because dude Lucas rubbed me the wrong way.
Lex is the kind of UF heroine, whether its YA, NA or other, that we're all super familiar with now. She's tough, ballsy, wants to prove herself and is reckless as she tries to. She has natural skills, but lacks the finesse of experience and constantly seems to worry about the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Oh and she's got special powers, tragic (and somewhat vague) family history, one guy who is Gaga over her and another who seems to want to ignore he is (for his own reasons) and a best friend who is the bubbliest creature ever.
Actually one of the few missteps here was the ending when Elena and Lex have a reckoning. It was very rushed feeling, and it didn't gel with the Elena we had met throughout the book. It was rather contrived feeling in order to set up the plot for the first book, which is set 7 years later. .
Lastly gods damn it, Damian almost ranks next to Tadashi as best big bro . Overall I enjoyed this enough that I want to continue the series.
Angels and demons are always a combination promising tension and drama. Even more so if the usual insight is twisted. Alexis is a half-demon living with her brother Damian, a nephilim, and Wes, another of her own kind. Those two guys are working together as PIs in the case any of the half-breeds has gone missing and someone asks them to investigate. Now, there is a bigger case in the city - someone is hunting and slaughtering the nephilim, leaving a trail of bodies. Lexi, eager to help and live a life of warrior and hunter, sets up her own investigation behind her brother's back, together with her boyfriend Lucas, also a nephilim. But the more they dig into the case, the more unpleasant discoveries pile up on the table, and the consequences of determination to solve this case and bring justice are fatal. I love the world setup. Half-breeds living among humans are nothing new, but considering that a half-demon has one of the kindest souls and angels are hateful murderers is quite the interesting twist. The idea of using runes to enhance magic is also nothing new, but I liked the way it was used in the story. The story itself was fast, full of twists, drama, suspense, adventure and lots of emotions. The characters were also interesting, starting with the overprotective Damian who kept more secrets to himself than one would expect, sulky and suspicious Wes providing only hints of his true feelings, the prince charming in shining armor Lucas, who paid for his love the greatest price, and reckless, stubborn Alexis who always followed her heart in doing what she considered right, but without thinking about the safest approach, putting everyone around her in danger. All the characters and their intervowen relationships were realistic and believable. The only thing that bothered me occasionally was the language used. Maybe it's the way Lexi thinks and acts, but I just couldn't get used to it. Otherwise, a very enjoyable book. I received an ARC from the author and decided to provide my honest feedback.
Holy half breeds this was good. This is the first of Felicias books and I am hooked. It has everything you need, mystery, comedy, over protective brother, sassy little sister, love, betrayal and heartbreak.
Lex a half demon who wants to work for her Nephilim brother, helping others. He doesn't want her following in his footsteps, he wants her off and living life away from danger. Well that is not what she wants and helping gets her into all sorts of trouble. Looking for missing Nephilim and juggling a human BFF, an over protective brother and adoptive brother, oh and a new hot guy who isn't quite human.
Such a good laugh and felt a little bad for Lex. I get why Damien kept pushing Lex away, BUT he should've figured out sooner it wasn't the way to keep her safe. The book has left me more questions and I can't wait to read more .
Alexis is a high school student who is secretly half-demon. Her older brother is a private investigator for the supernatural and is half-angel. Mom left years ago. Brother Damien has an employee who is a demon but he's pretty nice and very pretty to look at. Lex wants to help Damien in the business but he wants her out of danger and going off to college. So conflict there. Lex's BFF in school has a new beau who is secretly half-angel and he has the hots for Lex so more conflict. This is much more than a teenage angst story and I thought it was pretty good. I already bought book 2 to continue the story.
This was first published on my blog "Lecture toute une Aventure" I received an arc and i voluntary reviewed this story
A great investigation in a universe where nephilim, angel, demon, etc are among us and not everyone is happy about that. Sentinels area group of supposed humans who hunt the paranormal being , despising them when they are "kind" they put them in ghetto, prison most often they simply kill without asking question. Because of that reality, Nephilim ( descendant from angel) or damion ( descendant from demon) are hiding... not really accepted by their parent side they are left to fend for themselves and don't mix together.
However Damian is different he is a nephilim working as a PI for both groups and he protect his sister who is a half demon... he is courageous, super protective and has a lot of responsabilities but Lexi isn't that little anymore and she wants to be his partner not just the little sister...when case of missing nephilim appears she goes behind his back to find and punish the culprit. She is determined, intelligent and loyal i loved that about her. To have a little chance and because of the circumstances, she end up with the new boy at school as her partner: Lucas who is also a nephilim and one so , so sexy. He is hiding part of his part but he is really attracted to Lexi, showing some interesting powers when needed.
The investigation is really well done, some part of the story end on cliffhanger but this is a prequel so i hope we will learn more later.I guess the only thing i regretted a little was how quickly Lexi and Lucas became intimate... yes she is 18 not 15 (even if she sure acts like it) and with the story it make sense but somehow i would have wanted her to think more.
I liked Damian....perhaps it's why i'm not that happy with what happen....Wes his partner is definitively funny and despite his looks he sure care for Lexi. i hope to see more of him definitively a series i would be happy to follow as there are still a lot to discover.
Gets off to a gripping start and is fast-moving throughout. The main character is really well developed and interesting, others felt flat. The plot is well-crafted, but could have been slowed down a little bit to make room to develop the side characters. There were tons of pop-culture references throughout which started to bring me out of the story at times. Great sense of humour though, and very entertaining. Overall, this is a fun read and the beginning of what looks to be an intriguing series.
Our protagonist's are Alexis Margaret Jane Trenton (1/2 demon & 1/2 human) better know as Lex and her brother Damian (1\2 angel & 1\2 human). Along with Wes (full demon) who works along side Damian at the P.I. office. Damian is hired to find a missing boy who happens to be a nephilim or 1\2 angel. This boy along with others of his kind are being found murdered...This story is like driving a car on a mountain path, twisting and turning never knowing who the murderer is until the end. I highly recommend this series. I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
This is an unusual spin on a familiar story - solving the mystery of a killer, with young love happening too - in that the characters are all angels, demons, or half-breeds of some description. It's a good read, if a little graphic in places (both in the murderous battles and the sex scenes), and I'd definitely be interested in reading more in the series. Recommended for older readers who don't mind a bit of adult content in their story. NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
Nephilim Falling is well-written and fast-paced. It started out with action, but then started to lose me. The premise is an interesting one with twists and turns, but there were just too many things that were similar to other books of this type that I've read. At times, it felt like I was reading a combination of several other books instead of an original one. Despite that, I did manage to get back into the story for awhile, but it just wasn't the same after that first action-packed scene.
Lex has been trying to prove her worth to her older brother most of her life. She thinks a missing Nephilim case is her perfect opportunity but things do not exactly go to plan.
I loved this. I read Descent first and liked it but had some issues. I wish I had read this first. It really gave a great picture of Lex and why she is the way she is. Not to mention all the feels over Lucas. I will definitely move on to book 1.
Angels, Demons and half-breeds make for an interesting fantasy world. This book has plenty of action in it and makes your emotions go on a roller coaster ride. I can not wait to read the next book as the ending of this one made me go WHOA! I received a free copy of this book and volunteered to review it.
This book was something a little different from what I normally read. It took me a little while to get into (like I was halfway through the book before I could get into it) but once I did I really wanted to see how it ended. I would have liked to have more explanation as to why the sentinels were established to hunt demons and nephilim are being hunted and how they came to live in the human world. This was never really answered. The love story also seems like an afterthought and the way it ends is very anticlimactic.
I really enjoyed this book, the fact that the world you were reading about was also full of angels, demons and half breeds made it even more appealing. There is plenty of action, romance, steamy scenes as well as some gore to keep you hooked along with great characters and a world that leaves you wanting more so tick tock the countdown is on to book 2!
This is a re-release with a new name, so make sure you don't double buy it. I loved this story! I loved the characters, I loved the adventure, I loved the romance, I loved everything about it. It is a quick read, but it didn't feel rushed. Everything was well developed and I can't wait for the next one.
Kindle Unlimited but got it as ARC so one of those free to you we hope you review it things and since free doesn't mean better review to me blah blah blah. So anyway, demon detective, angels well nephilim and just read the book already and look to the stars/ratings.
Wow! I was Lucky enough to be trusted with an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and OMG.... This is undoubtedly one of the best paranormal series I have read in such a long time! Fast paced, characters built in concrete, plot that flows with seemingly no effort and beautifully wriitten.
The story line was interesting, but I just couldn't connect. I struggled through the majority of the book keeping up the twists and turns but I really wanted to see how it ended. There are some gaps in the story but I figures the 'whys and wherefores' become clearer in further editions.
I enjoyed this book it is book one in the Lex Trenton Origins series. The characters are great as well as the story line. It kept me turning the pages to the end.Action, suspense, drama, love and laughs all rolled up in one book. A must read I can't wait to get my hands on book two.
