________

At last we come to the conclusion of this trilogy. And what a thrilling conclusion it was!

In this third book, we finally get to see Mica pursuing the job she always believed she wanted since the first pages of book 1--she ventures deep into the Obsidian Empire as a spy. Not just any spy either! She is right at the center of the tumultuous action in the Stone Court itself, where her smallest, split-second decisions could make or break the course of two empires.

No pressure!

As much as I enjoyed the twists and turns of Mica and Caleb's adventure in the Obsidian Court, my favorite part of this book was getting to finally step into Jessamyn's head. Her point-of-view is threaded throughout the book, tying the story taking place in Obsidian back to Windfast. And it was fantastic! Even as I head-smacked a few times over Jessa's decisions, I really what drove her to make those decisions, and I rooted for her even when she was sometimes on the ragged edge of becoming the villain.

Jessa and Mica's friendship/frenemyship is truly the heart and soul of this whole series. This remained true even though they were separated for most of this book. I loved the balance Jordan Rivet managed as she bounced back and forth between the two characters and how their stories played off each other.

The romantic element is strong in this book. Mica and Caleb's relationship continues to develop in sweet and heartfelt ways. And Jessamyn might finally be getting a bit of unexpected romance of her own? Just the barest beginnings, but . . . it's there, and I totally ship it.

This series was such a delight to discover. I am a huge fan of Jordan Rivet's style and characterization, and what fun to know she's got two other series just waiting for me to dive into!

So maybe this wasn't totally a 5 star book, but I so thoroughly enjoyed the series that I don't really care. I was captivated from beginning to end. Mica, Caleb, Jessa, Tiber, Owen, Emir, and the many others, I've enjoyed getting to know them all, and watching them grow and change as their stories progressed. I love that she created two extremely capable and resilient main female characters. I also love that I actually really liked (maybe even loved) them. That doesn't happen very often with female characters for me. Well done. And even though this is the last book in the series, maybe one day the author will take us back with a new story. Maybe Owen's story. I would definitely read that. In the meantime, this was a satisfying conclusion to a new favorite, even if I'm a little sad that it's over.

This series has been so interesting. I really like the whole concept and the author’s writing style. This is my 1st time reading a series from this author, so I am glad to say that I definitely intend to read more books by her.

Here are some of my thoughts:
• While this is perhaps my least favorite book from the trilogy, I still like it. The stakes are even higher in this one, unsurprisingly. The plot has taken some interesting turns with the politics, spywork, magic, and ethical issues.
• I like seeing Mica and Caleb working together as exiles/spies to accomplish a mission. I appreciate that they both have equal parts in figuring things out and getting work done. They have fought and gotten annoyed with one another, and I like that they get to learn to communicate and trust one another in this one. I love them both together so much.
• Jessa’s storyline is intriguing. Her POV is depressing at times and she annoys me with what she does, but I do appreciate seeing how she has grown. She is more hardened after her experiences, especially with Mica not being by her side in this book. Both she and Mica have to make difficult, ethical decisions – choosing between what is best for their empire and what they want to do. I honestly got scared a few times wondering what they both would do.
• Rivet does a good job creating and developing her characters. Both Mica and Jessa are consistent characters, while also having gradual growth. I mean that they both do things that are believable of their core characteristics/values, while changing gradually as they develop as characters.
• A recurring theme is justice/ethics and I love seeing how much Mica and Caleb want to fight for justice, while facing ethically difficult decisions. Same goes for Jessa who really gets an ethical makeover, although I’ll say she’s less about justice and more for fighting for her empire. Meanwhile, Mica and Caleb are fighting for Talents’ rights, and that has been true since the 1st book.
• I like Tiber and I find that he has interesting interactions with both Mica and Caleb. He is a surprisingly good, likable guy.
• I love Mica’s family. In particular, I adore Emir. I low-key ship Emir and Jessa now (although I would have liked to see more scenes to develop them).
• Peet is adorable. I would not mind seeing more of him in a new series or something.

Overall, I’m giving this 3.5 stars. This has been a thoroughly interesting series from beginning to end. The plot, characters, and romance are filled with good pacing and developments.

A satisfying conclusion to a fun series! I think my favourite of the whole trilogy is still Book 2, but this one still contained all the palace intrigue, backstabbing, and spy shenanigans I enjoyed in the previous two books. Consistently, my favourite character throughout these books has been Jessamyn, and I loved how far Jordan pushed her to the brink of villainy in this book. The relationship between Jessamyn and Mica really is the heart of this series, and it was admirable how the author kept a strong sense of that relationship going even through a book where the two of them are apart for much of it. There are a ton of other enjoyable characters here too, like Prince Owen, who kept me chuckling, and Tiber, whose part in the plot turned out to be rather more nuanced and surprising than I had expected it to be. For fun swashbuckling adventures like these, I really admire the craft and skill Jordan Rivet has poured into her work and look forward to seeing what she writes for us next!

A Satisfying, Fun and Realistic Trilogy

After receiving the advanced reading copy of ‘Traitor,’ I made myself wait for the weekend to dig in - and it was well worth it to be able to read through at Blur speed in two sittings.

The realm Rivet has carefully created in ‘Spy’ and ‘Impostor’ are well established by this final book - and we get right into the intrigue and action: will Mica abandon her assignment? Will Princess Jessamyn overturn the war? And whom will the Fifth Talents ultimately serve, Obsidian or the Empire? The tension is palpable.

Without creating spoilers, I found the twists and developments of various relationships timely and fulfilling. I particularly enjoyed the various dangers and threats of betrayal and how they pan out. The princess’s decisions to protect the Empire are understandable and it saddened me when her personality reaches an extreme point under great duress - but this was unexpected to me because she has seemed to in control of herself throughout the many ordeals she has been facing. However, it was still within character, unlike my sole bone of contention about the backstory of this trilogy - Obsidian.

I met the king and he is underhanded and domineering. The things he has done to his own family and Talents are pretty evil and racist, and I would have despised him more if he had wrought greater havoc to the Empire. He would have been even more detestable if the people across the lands were still suffering because of him - and suffering evidently. The fear and loathing of the Empire doesn’t seem justified, but still, the Obsidian king is quite realistic and plays a critical role.

Overall, I liked Rivet’s trilogy and started to feel at a loss towards the end of the story... Her characters live on beyond the pages - testament to a writer who values them and knows what she’s doing. A highly recommended series and I look forward to exploring Rivet’s other stories!

Well! After the discouraging twists of Book 2, this finale was most satisfying. I shan't give away too much of the story, but I fully recommend the series!

I will note there are a few moments of kissing, especially one in this book that may have ended up going further except it was interrupted. And also some moments of violence. But overall, very clean and quite exciting.

I was delighted with a certain potential ship sailing. Very much so (especially after Book 2, if you know what I mean.)

I only sigh that so much was summarized at the end...I need a sequel series, especially if it involves Prince Owen. Yes, bring me more of this Prince Owen. Bring me more now.

At the start I was excited that Mica was actually going to be able to have a mission in Obisidian, just like she had always wished at the start of this series. What I ending up loving more though was how the author was not afraid of studying the nuances to our favorite characters and providing different insights, knocking them down while also building them up. Mica and Jessamyn prove to be steadfast yet complex characters and being able to delve deep into their mindsets made the their stories come to life. I loved how the roles of good vs. evil weren't so clear cut and we had to go through the struggles of questioning what it means to do the right thing and what it means to be who you are. We definitely could see the world and how our protagonists grow from inside Jewel Harbor all the way to the Stone Court. It was also great see new and old faces and the development of the various relationships Mica had with these characters. The side characters too proved to come alive with their different personalities and motivations! Plus there were still some romantic as well as comedic moments amidst the backdrop of warfare. Oh and that CLIFF SCENE with Jessa and Mica. Perfection! Overall this was an excellent conclusion to this series and I can't wait for more from this author (p.s. As a shameless fangirl I'm hoping for hope that we'll see more from the Empire of Talents, particularly from a certain ship lol).

p.p.s It is rare for a book to make me want to jump in again and reread it, but this is one of those books! It was that good!

To see more reviews, considering taking a peek at my first in series YA book blog here

Mica and Caleb travel to Obsidian to get back the potion that will reveal the secret of making the fifth talents. Exiled by Jessa, they can only forge forward.

An unexpected ally of Mica's from the academy sparks determination in Mica and suspicion in Caleb. There is little he can do, however, because all talents/Windfast citizens are slaves in Obsidian.

While Caleb learns the underground and plight of the slaves, Mica learns what the royal family of Obsidian is truly like...and they may not be the complete monsters she once believed. Or they might.

Back in Windfast Jessa struggles to heed Mica's advice on using the fifth talents and dangerously toes the line of morality to achieve her goals. Was it all necessary? I don't know, but I am somewhat dissapointed in her. Though, her actions, more than most, make sense realistically. I just hurt seeing her throw caution to the wind.

You will enjoy questioning the motives of every new character introduced time and again. Rivet has splendidly veiled her secrets under polite society and sweet words.

I had very few complaints about this book. Admittedly, the first half was a bit slowed paced for my liking, but once I hit the 50% mark that stopped being a problem. Also, Jordan Rivet writes in third person and it does drive me a bit crazy. Sometimes it works for books with multiple POVS. But I dont think that
was the case in this series as its all viewed through the eyes of Mica and Jessa only. This style of writing, while not in any way unbearable, does take me out of the story quite a lot. I'm not standing right there with the characters, ya know?

Rivet has meticulously made sure that both adults and middle grade kids alike would enjoy this book.

Overall this trilogy was a joy to read. Rivet is 2 for 2 on enrapturing me in the world and characters she has created. I cannot wait till her next series is out!!!

Before I begin, let me just mention something I've forgotten to for my previous two reviews: Aren't these covers gorgeous?! I love them! Not only are they beautiful, but they represent the story inside so very well! So, props to the cover artist for this trilogy! Love it!

We got to see the Obsidian land! Whoot! Okay, for setting, we yet again expanded. I think this author has a very strong grasp of setting. In each book, she's not only expanded the readers' sense of her world, but she's done so very well. I enjoyed every new city and port and castle we encountered and each felt genuine and as real as the last. There was no sense of emptiness about her world, if that makes sense. It felt real and full, buoyant and round. Each place felt distinct and individual, even within the separate countries, they held a common enough thread to make it believable and distinguishable from the previous places we'd seen. She touched on cultural nuances a little--enough to make the lands feel like two separate lands--but we didn't really get into a ton of cultural background, history, and traditions. I'm not necessarily upset about that, though. The primary focus felt in the now and in the future for these two countries. Setting was phenomenally written.

We saw both returning characters and a few new ones. I liked how some of the older ones tied in, one in specific whom I won't name, pleased me, resurfacing in an unexpected and somewhat crucial role. To that end, there was also one character who resurfaced that almost felt forced. Like the character needed to tie in again to bring things full circle, but it didn't really feel...authentic since the character has been absent almost since day one. Oh, there was one older character I did expect to see and I'm pleased to say his role definitely felt natural and enhanced the story. The returning characters, mainly our MCs, walked through a whole bout of trouble this go 'round. I need to address Jessamyn briefly, since she left me on such a disappointed note in the second book. This was the first time we were actually able to see things from her perspective and get an actual insight into her thoughts--due to the split nature of the plot and setting. I did actually enjoy glimpsing the situation from her perspective, and I thought her portrayal was very convincing throughout the book. It made her choices feel even more understandable than when we first began to unravel her. That said, she took a roller coaster of a ride (the whole book did, truly. It totally messed with my emotions!) and, though I am content with the way things turned out--happy even--I still felt her final turn was just...slightly abrupt. It's not that it didn't feel right or true to Jessamyn; it's just that the...moment, for lack of a better word, was so sudden. Mica's development felt more natural and consistent, though she did have a brief and rather sudden phase that was somewhat out of character. I mean, I see why it occurred and I'm not saying it wasn't plausible, but again, the pacing was just a little off, which made it feel less genuine--though still more genuine that Jessamyn's developments. All the buildup beforehand felt natural; it's the resolution I felt was jipped. All that said, I still enjoyed the characters and they were mostly well-done. I actually really really liked Owen and wish we could have dived even deeper into his character. I feel like we only scratched the surface with him. Of course, shout out to my very favorite, Caleb. He steals the show for me!

Speaking of plot, this one held even less mystery, I think, than the second, but that doesn't mean it was any less intriguing. This one employed higher stakes than the previous two and that tension, both among relationships (character and country alike) and in the face of the consequences of failure, kept the plot very enticing. I think I read through this one faster than the previous two because the plot had me hooked. I wanted to know how everything resolved. As for resolutions, there could have been just a little more resolution between some of the characters! I mean, some things were implied, others were even less implied, but either way, I did want just a little more solidity in that ending. With relationships, I mean; the actual plot ending, I was fine with. It turned out interesting, that's for sure. I didn't see the resolution before they presented it and I thought it was a creative way to bring things to a head.

The book is fairly well-written. I only caught one boo-boo and there was only one bit that was annoyingly repeated (or perhaps that was the last book?), but other than that, it's of sound quality. As I've mentioned, I did have some pacing issues. The plot was mostly well paced, with a few minor threads ill-concluded. I think the author was just trying to make sure she tied everything together in a neat bow, and in the process forgot that not every thread was consistently developed and brought through all three books. The characters had some pacing issues in development, but they were mostly minor.

Content. Kay, this one was the most violent of the three, some of it mildly graphic, though not as bad as it could have been by far. The book does take place in a war, so there are casualties of that war. The romance wasn't any more explicit than a kiss. There were two foul words, though one was relatively minor and the other one (used twice, I think--maybe three times) was used in such a way that it fit the context and setting, which is the only way I don't take issue with such words personally. Still would recommend for about sixteen and up.

Look, it's not the best trilogy in my reading history, but neither is it the worst. Truthfully, I very much enjoyed the book. There were a few drawbacks for me, and I don't intend to reread the book a thousand times proclaiming it one of my very favorites. However, I'm glad I read it and would consider recommending it to friends I think would enjoy the story.

A solid conclusion to the series. I imagine there's going to be some major problems in the future but that's left to your imagination.

I still don't like Jessa and her actions in this book only solidified that feeling. I felt like she made more poor choices but again suffers no consequences. She doesn't make any "good" choices until the very end where she makes one. I can't even say that all of her bad choices were solidly bad. I think she was in a tricky situation and made a call that wasn't bad persay but led to bad things. Kind of like it might not be morally wrong to step on a sled on top of an icy hill but expecting not to fall on your butt and then have the sled go careening down the hill(and probably hitting trees and throwing you off the sled and maybe breaking some bones) is a bit naive.

So Jessa stepped on the sled because she couldn't really just stay at the top of the hill and watch but that led to a domino effect where she made lots of choices as a result that were bad. And she walks away at the end without a scratch. She got what she wanted.

Mica's sections of the story were interesting and I just wished they had more of Caleb since he was hardly present in this book. I thought her overall mission got wrapped up super easily and so many loose ends tied that it almost felt like all her efforts hadn't been needed. Sure, she needed to be their to eliminate the formula but everything else (and even getting to the formula) was wrapped up so neatly that it took a bit of the accomplished feel out of it.

Great conclusion to the series! I like the twist of them going on a mission without the princess and all the other royals, it was more fast paced than the court scenes in the other books which made it so much more interesting!! I wasn’t super interested in the Princess’ storyline and I find the character bland and annoying (but that may be just me, and she could also be written specifically to be that way).

Overall, I think it was a good conclusion. As with the other books, I flew through this one as well. Even if the writing isn’t super descriptive and can be more flat at times, the story itself and development of plot/ideas is so well done that I give it 5 stars.

Awesome wholesome, heart warming, adventurous series for when you want a quicker but enjoyable read. I rarely finish series so this enhances how good the books are if I’m tempted to actually read a whole series. Good read, totally recommend!

This was the last chapter of a very interesting saga, but it can be the beginning of a new saga as there were several points that can be explored in future books.
The story goes on with Mica and Caleb infiltrate themselves in the mist on the enemy lair with the help of another mimic to try to retrieve the formula, but while they are there a revolution occurs and they are in the middle of it. In the meantime the princess starts to use the Five Talent army in order to win the war against their enemies but when her father is murdered she takes a big step by emerging herself in the formula and creates several other Five Talents and is up to Mica to show her that everything is OK and then she destroys the formula

LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS! Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, BOOM she threw me in for a loop! And still, I was EXTREMELY satisfied with the ending. Every character I loved got what I felt they deserved, and the characters I doubted were redeemed for the most part. I love how Caleb and Mica are making their way in the world and how the empries around them are rebuilding in a realistic way. And man, did I love the relationships Mica had with her brothers. I couldn't get enough of them or of the love triangle Rivet *tried* to pose between Tiber, Mica and Caleb. Tiber and Prince Owen added so much comic relief and fun to the story but were also much necessary to the plotline imo. I just can't say enough how much I loved this series and how well everything fit together. I am totally going to buy these books 😍

With thanks to the author for the advanced copy, I was just blown away with this conclusion to the trilogy. From the cover art to the character development this story is pure escapism grounded in good vs evil.

Mica and Calab are knee deep in the Obsidian Kings attempt at accessing their homeland. The great thing in my opinion is it isn’t all physical. Mica has to pull off the greatest impersonation ever to save her world. Does she have the confidence and the chops to pull it off? You’ll just have to readabd find out. Recommended 4/5

A great story to end the trilogy about a kingdom of people who are born with Talents. There were good guys bad guys and a war that changed a lot of people and really made me consider right and wrong. I loved Caleb and Mica. They are great characters and very well written that I felt I was with them the whole time. Loved the action in this one and what Mica ends up doing to save her kingdom was amazing. A great read that kept me entertained and interested for the whole series and I loved the ending. I loved it.

I still want Aren and Barren to come back.....A SPIN-OFF please? For Emir and the Empress and something in which Aren and Barren is still alive, I can't get over it.

The whole trilogy was fantastic and I don't think my time was wasted, I learned some stuff too and for me, that's really important when you're reading something, you have to get something out of that book besides leisure. It was a journey I'd probably want to go through again, this trilogy is surely on my go-to to-read list!

TOTALLY WORTH READING.

I think the Author did a great job with the Jessamyn/Mica relationship and how complex it became. There's some intense self-realization both women have to go through. The whole Obsidian Court came off a bit comedic, so I didn't give it 5 stars. It seemed like the "big bad enemy" could have used a bit more definition. This is really just a personal nit-pick at this point, given the overall book was really good. A book I would recommend.

I absolutely love this author’s books! The only reason I give this book a 4 is because her other series is even better, and I know she can do more!

The whole series had a unique world of magic. The ending was very satisfying and we had a nice redemption ARC for one of the characters! This story had a good lesson on how power corrupts!

I just saw that a new series will be released soon, and I can’t wait!

This was by far my favorite of the 3. T
There were never any dry areas. Something was always keeping you on the edge of your seat and with all the twists and turns you'll be pulling allnighters. The best part though was being able to keep everything straight and not being overwhelmed with SO much that it just becomes clouded, but yet still getting an in depth and quite detailed story. Very easy world to get lost in. I feel the ending leaves you feeling statisfied.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

What a beautiful way to wrap up this series!
In this book, we get to meet the Obsidians, the dreaded enemies of the empire.
I felt that this book had a lot more depth than the first two, mostly in terms of characters' values and conflicting emotions and goals.
Loved how strong the romance got toward the end of the book but it stayed clean so this would appeal to younger lovers of YA fantasy.
The writing and pace of the book make it easy to get lost in its pages.

I would love to read more stories from that wonderful world.

This was an excellent final installment to the trilogy. I liked the solution. Even though this book was longer than the previous books, it felt like a quick read. I almost think this could have been a longer series.

Mica and Caleb didn't grow as characters in this book, but Jessamyn made some interesting progress. I was also glad to see the character of Tiber come back. I'd been hoping for that since the start of the series.

What a fantastic ending to this series. I was privileged to receive an ARC copy of the book, and I couldn't wait to dive in. Great world building and strong characters make this a great page turner. Wow. What a roller coaster ride this last book was. Amazing story full of action , passion , intimacy, intrigue. A true fantasy thriller but with a lot of heart. I am going to miss Mica’s adventures. Empire of Talents Series

This is a great series. I really enjoyed the twist on magic in these books. It isn't your wand and words kind of magic. The description of the land and characters don't leave you wondering about anything. This is the second series I have read from this author, and I can't wait to read more.

And this is how you end a book series. From beginning to end, this was a captivating read. Throughout the series the author stayed consistent with the story and her characters. I really enjoyed seeing how Mica and Caleb would fight for what they believe in, which is justice. A well-paced good vs evil trilogy.

Talents and more talents

This is the last book in the ‘Empire of Talents’ series, “A Traitor at the Stone Court”. This series involved masquerades, invincible talents, betrayal, love, and enduring friendships. The mix was refreshingly different and at times unexpected. I enjoyed the trilogy very much.
