Quick facts with commentary on some

If you're the sort that likes knowing a wealth of talking points to fill in awkward lulls in conversation, this may be the book for you. (Some of them may make for more awkward conversation - faux used panties vending machines are not a suitable topic at a work gathering.)

It's a quick read, 500 facts as advertised, grouped into similar themes. They're a sentence or three, some of them with commentary by the author, and some of them just the facts. This allows you to follow up independently on things that interest you - an island of rabbits, cat cuddling cafes - while being done with other facts - the invention of karaoke - more quickly.

An example of the writing:

"157. The word for spinach and for falling in love in Japanese sound very similarly. Spinach is called ‘horenso’ and ‘horeru’ is ‘to fall in love’ or ‘secret love’. Therefore, when someone gives a green gift to the other person, he/she is showing their love without words. Aww, so romantic, don’t you agree?"

I still feel little annoyed by her personal commentary on some presented facts. Despite the same plain organised structured as the France book, the info about Japan keep me engaged.

Nice to spend some time reading about Japan without being too deep. Meaning, it is a shallow lecture, but it still made me miss Japan. Not entirely 500 random facts since there were some repeats.
