Legends of Light #4

The Stealthmaster's Shadow: A Twelve Dancing Princesses Novella

Rate this book
Verus specializes in finding people, like members of the secret midnight meetings the tyrannical city governor wants hunted down.

With only the scribbled clues of a former comrade and a hidden pair of shapeless slippers concealed beneath a windowsill, Verus begins his search.

He has three days to find these so-called Subverters.

Finding and handing them over, however, are two very different things. Especially when the infuriatingly distracting woman he’s taken to calling “Princess” gets involved.

As the seemingly simple investigation becomes more and more complicated, Verus battles nightmares from his past and rising threats in the present.

But he knows from experience that decisions are never easy. Especially when duty conflicts with love.

Because fleeing will only make the enemy stronger. But staying…

Staying could doom them all.

A retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Stealthmaster’s Shadow weaves the timeless elements of high stakes, mysterious midnight escapades, and tattered slippers with threads of wit, danger, and failure.

The fourth novella in the Legends of Light series, this short novel is a stand-alone story and contains a handful of allegorical themes.

Review to come closer to the blog tour :)

UPDATE: full review below or on my blog

The Stealthmaster’s Shadow is my favorite Legends of Light novella yet! As always with the novellas, I loved the concept and the theme, and especially the characters this time around. Verus successfully dragged me into the plot and before I knew it, I was reading the entire book as fast as I could.

PLOT

I will admit: the plot confused me quite a bit. I had a general idea of what was going on, but I probably couldn’t explain the specifics to you. However, that may have been in part because I was reading so fast that I never slowed down to dwell on what had just happened 😉 That’s part of what I love about these novellas: you have to think while reading them.

The pacing moved pretty quick, as the story is relatively short. It didn’t sag anywhere, but drew me onward until I was suddenly on the last page. I especially loved how the story was nearly like what happens in the Acts of the Apostles, with the beginning of the persecution of the church.

I can’t say how well it followed the Twelve Dancing Princesses storyline…because I’ve never actually read that fairytale *hides*

CHARACTERS

Oh my word…the characters were FANTASTIC. I loved them from the first moment I met them.

Verus, the protagonist, was hands down my favorite. His sarcasm levels were quite satisfactory XD However, he still had emotion, which made him even more sympathetic and relatable.

Adriana was amazing as well. Her interactions with Verus were hilarious, and the dialogue between the two was the best. I loved how she was a strong female character, yet still feminine. Her faith was also portrayed very well so it was clearly an important part of who she was, but not super pushy.

The other characters were wonderful as well, though I can’t remember a lot of specifics about them. They were well developed, but Verus and Adriana stole the stage every time. Though that twist at the climax… *grins* It was perfect, though I can’t believe I didn’t see it coming.

The one character who confused me was the Wingmaster. I kept thinking it was Evrard from Song of the Sword, but I haven’t read that novella in quite a while, so I couldn’t be sure.

ANYTHING ELSE?

– This novella is a bit darker than the other ones. There’s a bit more bloodshed, some pretty intense flashbacks, and *SPOILER* a torture scene near the end *END SPOILER* Nothing really bothered me though, as there wasn’t too much detail.

– I loved the theme (though I always say that XD). Though I can’t put it into words right now, I’ll definitely be rereading this novel sometime to analyze it.

– As with all of the Legends of Light novellas, the Hope seamlessly weaves in Christian allegories into the story.

In sum, I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a short, exciting read with a strong dash of humor and a powerful Christian allegory.

I had the pleasure of reading this before publication, and it was a read well worth the time. It's such a fun story and Hope's writing style always gets to me beautifully.

The characters in The Stealthmaster's Shadow are so much fun. Verus has a tough background, but he's not one of those dark brooding characters. I love the dark brooding ones, but Verus is just as good. He's sarcastic and witty and...sometimes just the tiniest bit childish, but in a good way. His personality instantly captured me right from the first page.

Hope's retellings are always loose and creative, but still weave in the elements of the original tale in such a unique way. I love the twists and quirks through the story, and how she adds in nods to the story in unexpected ways but still has them tie in perfectly with the plot and theme.

The Stealthmaster's Shadow follows on from the first books in the series, catching up the storyline from a new point of view and aspect. Even though it's the fourth book, it could be read by itself, though it's probably the best when read after the first three.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and it was such a fun read. Absolutely recommend!

2021 edit: I love this novella so much. (I think this is my third time skim reading it after actually reading it).
I will warn that there is quite a lot of violence/pain and two deaths. But I love the characters: Sassy boi and couragous girl. :D It gives me lots of adventurous feels. This is the type of story I would love to see as a tv show or movie. My favorite of Hope Ann's works to date.
My minor complaint is I'm not fond of "back in time chapters," but they were important to show us Verus's backstory and why he is like he is. Otherwise, he would never have told us. (That is part of the reason I tend to skim-read though, but I'm also impatient and only want to read my most favorite parts). XD

I want a sequel novel.
I REQUIRE one. :P Or just, you know, another novella/book from Hope. That would satisfy me. *realizes I still haven't read Shadows of the Hersweald." *is excited*

2019 review: SOOO GOOOOOOD. The main character (and like all the characters) are so awesome. I read this once. Then skimmed. Then read it another time. It is shorter- which is cool because then you get an adventure in a shorter time!
I really recommend it.
The only warning is that there is violence/pain, but that is it. ;)
So epic.
Read it!!

(Review originally posted on my book blog: https://thepagedreamer.wordpress.com/...)

Well, that was great!

Meet Verus. Verus is without a doubt my favorite thing about this novella. :D He is SO epic! A retired soldier (at... like... in his twenties; what can we say—the war’s over), he’s a Stealthmaster (something which is never fully explained but we basically get the idea) and totally lives up to such a name. He’s constantly sneaking around, lurking in shadows and picking locks and jumping off balconies and being snarky to everybody, and... he’s just epic and so, so much fun! I don’t know how he manages to be kind of grumpy AND all dramatic and sassy, but he is. Everyone’s kind of afraid of Stealthmasters with their mysterious ways (and his awesome cloak! Want.) but Verus at least has a heart of gold, and I loved reading about him, even as he wrestles with his past and learns through mistakes. Anyway, he’s my favorite and so much fun to read. :D WHAT a character. <3

Essentially, reading this is worth it just for Verus. ;) But it’s an intriguing tale, too, AND (wait for it) it’s a retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses! Kinda. There aren’t twelve, and it’s not so much a retelling as an “inspired by,” but the hints and nods to the original were so fun and some were brilliant. It was like picking up clues! And they all made total sense, too. I loved how it was totally different and yet you could recognize bits and pieces of the fairytale, which also mixed well with the Christian allegory parts, largely involved with parallels of the early persecuted Church.

I’m pretty sure there’s a law somewhere that says all Twelve Dancing Princesses retellings must be dark. XD There wasn’t a bunch of scary magic or anything for this one, but some of it was kinda brutal... so be aware of that, if that sort of thing bothers you. Despite the snark and humor, a lot of it’s very intense and deals with some tough themes. It was also interesting how some of the story was told in flashbacks about Verus in the war.

The story is set about a decade after the other three Legends of Light novellas. I think one could read this one and enjoy it without having read those, but I did enjoy it extra since I had. There was a cameo appearance from one of my favorites! :D (Hi, Evrard! *waves enthusiastically*) So that was awesome. Most of the characters (like the “princess” character, who’s pretty stealthy in her own right, and a cute little boy, etc.) are new, and even if you haven’t read the first three, this one pretty much stands alone. :)

A few times I felt like things could have been explained better than they were and I kind of tripped up and didn’t have a clue what was going on (possibly due to the short length; it is a novella, after all), but I figured things out eventually and I just wish it could have been longer! I’d love to explore this neat palace setting and hang out with Verus and Adreana longer, but I was just relieved things turned out better than it looked like it would for a bit. XD Whew! Quite intense and exciting! With all kinds of mysteries and sneaking about.

Overall, aside from a couple minor things, it’s a fantastic read. And really, with a snarky hero who is incredibly epic (like, how often are people TRULY epic, I ask you?), a lot of witty dialog (I love funny things, okay?), and a Twelve Dancing Princesses theme (my favorite!), what is not to love? You’re definitely going to want to check this one out—I know I’m glad I did! :) (But Verus though. This guy!) A great tale! ^_^

I received a free e-ARC of this book from the author (thanks!) and these opinions are entirely my own.

Some Favorite Quotes

Verus flung himself over the banister in one easy motion and landed in a crouch in the gloom of the stairs. The shadows flickered rapid greetings, but no soldier appeared to challenge him.

***

“If you can’t read the meaning of a locked door—”

“It wasn’t locked,” Verus said. “There was merely an obstruction to opening it. A fault I fixed. Without charge, I might add.”

***

“He does have a chimney.” Her eyes twinkled. “Of course, it might smudge your cloak—the latest fashion from Zahavia, I believe? I’d have mentioned it before now, but—”

“Oh, shut up.” Verus stalked back onto the balcony. “Which way?”

“Left. The balcony there.” Adreana pointed to a wide slab of rock several dozen paces away. “I assume you can do it?”

Verus tucked his cloak into his belt. “I hope that’s not an honest question.”

She smirked. “I’ll be waiting.” She paused at the door. “And thanks.”

Verus smiled faintly, then shook his head and forced his face back into grim lines. Botheration take the girl and all the rest. They were more trouble than they were worth. Most people were, in the end.

***

“Did you have to kill the armor?”

“Do you have to make such a racket?” Verus shut the door hastily and glanced to where the helmet hung askew on the frame. “Besides, it’s just a concussion.” He strode over and spun it back in place. “See? He’s looking better already.”

“Still a nasty dent.” Adreana turned up the lamps. “How hard did you hit the poor thing?”

***

“Escape plan?”

“You /did/ have one in place in case the rebellion of yours failed?”

“Why would I ever,” Verus spluttered. “That is what you are counting on?”

“Well, do you have one or don’t you?”

Verus scowled, then hesitated. “Of course I have an escape plan.” Of a sort.

***

“Let’s find your lady.”

“We can probably slip around by—she’s not my lady.” Verus cut himself off.

Diomed smirked.

Verus scowled. “I can maim you and leave you behind.”

Well, that was stressful.

I think I'll have to read the rest of this series to get a better understanding of this world and it's people.
-Love the incorperaton of the resurrection and second coming.♡♡♡
-not too sure where "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" came in- the "worn slippers" was really the only thing mentioned...
...you could have at least had the cloak of invisibility ;P

I quite liked this! I think Rose of the Oath now has a competitor for my favorite Hope Ann book. :) I knew I'd love the characters from the snippets I read, and I wasn't disappointed. I was also pleased to find that Verus had a healthy set of flaws. I wish my illness-induced brain fog hadn't been so bad reading this, I think that's the reason some parts didn't click in my head, but I think the plot was interesting. :) It kept me up quite late reading. I also loved Hope Ann's interpretation of the Twelve Dancing Princesses... very fun :D Though I think this will make way more sense if you've read the rest of the series, I think it could be read as a standalone. :) The only content warning is that there's a good bit of blood and nasty injuries and some battles.

The next book in the Legends of light is here! Like the rest of the series, it can stand alone, and it is loosely fairytale based. This time Hope used Twelve Dancing Princesses, and her take is like none other I have seen.

Every Legends of Light book introduces a new element. In The Stealthmaster’s Shadow, we meet… the Stealthmasters. Professional investigators and spies, enemies of Tauscher. They seek to end the unrest that has the Prince left behind when he disappeared. Their role is defined by no one.

The main character is Verus, jaded, sarcastic, and surprisingly heroic. Hope is good at writing that sort of character, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading his story. Even if he as a character does not want us to hear it.

There’s some dancing, a ‘princess’, but certainly not twelve of them. Which is probably for the best. Twelve can be excessive, and certainly is for a novella. For those who don’t know the original story, it is a king with twelve daughters who sneak away to dance every night, and wear out their slippers. The king offers the hand of one of the daughters in marriage to anyone who can find out what is going on. But if after three nights the person hasn’t succeeded, they are put to death. (Why?) Many princes have tried and died, before a soldier comes along and tries his luck. Due good advice, he is able to avoid falling asleep, follows them, and brings back evidence of what they’ve been up to. It ends with him marrying the oldest princess because he himself isn’t very young.

In The Stealthmaster’s Shadow, Verus takes over an investigation from another Stealthmaster, whom he has an intense dislike for, and has a few days to find a group of Subverters. At least the governor said they were subverters. And that’s about all he said. Not what they are accused of, or anything that they have done. Just rumours that they exists. The governor is not very helpful. With some reason. Verus did mess up his plans, and he can be irritating to deal with.

A short way into the story, another significant character appears. Adreana, also called ‘Princess’. She knows things. And she seems to enjoy teasing Verus with what she knows. Pitting he skills against his is fun for her. And she’s close to succeeding. Verus is just a tiny bit too capable for her liking. Which is all for the best, as he’s more inclined towards her side than that of Osvaldus, the governor. Especially when he finds out exactly what kind of rebels they are. And I won’t say much more because I don’t want spoilers. It’s not the biggest spoiler, but it is a bit of one.

The book had one little thing that rather annoyed me. Verus had a brother named Evander which is far too similar to Evrard for my liking. Evrard is the Wingmaster from Song of the Sword, and makes a cameo here. Anyway, when I saw the name Evander, I kept thinking of the wrong person. There’s another Evander is some of book I’ve read. I forget what, but it’s there.

All in all, The Stealthmaster’s Shadow is an excellent continuation of the series, and shows the dynamic that has developed in the world since the departure of the Prince. It’s also a fun, and thoughtful read on it’s own. And hard to review adequately without giving spoilers.

So I actually forgot I was supposed to post this yesterday (jeesh guys, busyness that is a full time job) until I saw a reminder I had set on my phone telling me to write a post ahead of time and schedule it for then.

So, brought to you by said phone and La Quinta hotel internet: I give thee “The Stealthmaster’s Shadow,” by Hope Ann.

*I was given a free copy in exchange for my honest review*

Blurb:

It’s been ten confounded years since the war ended.

Verus, a retired soldier, determines to enforce the peace the victory ought to have brought. His wanderings bring him to the city of Nerva, a sprawling riverside chaos no other Stealthmaster will touch.

Commandeering the task of a former comrade, Verus presents himself to the governor and promises to search out hidden Subverters. The true reason for his actions he keeps to himself. After all, the tyrannical governor will hardly approve of lending aid to those pitted against him, but the Subverters need information. Maybe even weapons.

The wishes of the Subverters themselves are immaterial. They weren’t there during the war. They didn’t see the horrors Tauscher spread.

Verus has.

So has the new ambassador from Zahavia who strides through the great doors of the feasting hall, bringing Verus face to face with nightmares from his past.

As the simple mission dissolves into confusion, Verus struggles to help those he’s plunged into danger, from a serving lad to the infuriating woman he’s taken to calling “Princess.” Fleeing will only make the enemy stronger. But staying…

Staying could doom them all.

A stand-alone story, The Stealthmaster’s Shadow focuses on the fourth fruit of the Spirit, long-suffering, while following the results of the war between the Prince and Tauscher.

My Thoughts:

Of course, I am a big fan of Hope’s books, the overall feel of her work and the ideas behind her stories; so it didn’t surprise me when I discovered that it was AMAZING!

The character arcs are fantastically thought out and delivered, the dialogue is great, and there is sarcasm!

I would have finished it in one sitting, but I had someplace I needed to be. It is not super long, but it doesn’t seem like it ends too quickly.

Just go buy it ok!

While I've enjoyed other titles in this series, this one didn't really do as much for me. I did enjoy the humor in the dialogue and appreciated the message, and the backstory involving the main character's brother was genuinely touching. The main reason this didn't get a higher rating from me is that I found it very difficult to understand what was going on a good deal of the time, and there were a few important character relationships and allegiances that were a bit fuzzy until a good ways through the story.

I've been looking forward to this book ever since the last Legends of Light came out, and The Stealthmaster's Shadow was well worth the wait! The beginning was captivating and the ending very satisfying, plus the amazing characters and plot all the way through. I loved how the fairy tale was so cleverly added to the story, and thought Hope did a fantastic job of bringing together things from the first books, making an expertly crafted story in its own right, and then giving whispers and hopes for what will happen in next.

I'm not even quite sure where to begin my review, to be honest.

I'll start by saying this is my favorite Legends of Light book yet. I even went and re-read Rose of the Oath (my previous favorite) right after reading this one, just to verify which one I liked better. Might not have been the greatest idea, but just for the record...The Stealthmaster's Shadow is now my new favorite.

Perhaps it was because I felt like I was reading a real story. This wasn't just a fairy-tale retelling, with some names or stuff changed to make it different. This wasn't just an allegorical/Christian story.

Yes, this is a faint retelling of the old 12 Dancing Princesses tale. Yes, this does have some allegorical elements, and a Christian theme.

But it's also just a plain enjoyable read! I enjoyed the characters, the world, the conflict...everything about this little novella.

Yes, it's a novella. Normally I dislike novellas (I want tons of reading material, y'know??), but this one...somehow when I finished, I wasn't left with this empty "but I want more" feeling. No, I was satisfied. The story was nicely done, from beginning to end.

(There was, however, a good bit of more violence found in this book than in the other Legends of Light novellas. Mostly just one particular torture scene...nothing too extremely graphic. But just a brief heads up.)

But if you like a bit of mystery, a bit of excitement and danger, maybe a hint of romance, and tons of sarcasm...this is highly recommended!

So, are you excited yet??? If you haven't ordered it yet, just stare at this beautiful cover, and you might change your mind.

The Stealthmaster’s Shadow is set in the same world as Hope Ann’s three other novellas: Rose of the Oath, Song of the Sword, and Rose of the Night. I personally have yet to read those, but if they’re anything like this one then I look forward to reading them.

For me this novella was an introduction to a deep fantasy world and engaging characters. The world is clearly well thought-out, with well-designed political tensions and an allegorical religious system.

Some of the characters were less engaging than others, as is the case with all stories, but overall I was able to really enjoy them. Verus’ skill and dark sense of humor made him fun to read.

I did think that some of the relationships were a little rushed and we didn’t get to see quite as much basis to them as I might have liked, but some of that may have been due to me not absorbing what I read as well on a computer as on a Kindle or print book. (It’s a really weird and annoying thing about me.)

Hope Ann’s descriptions were excellent, bringing out the key elements of the characters and settings so they were easy to visualize and immersing you in the action. I would have liked a bit more description of Verus, but his personality made him easy to visualize, for me.

Overall this was a lovely book and I definitely recommend it. :)

Interesting...

This is only the second of Hope 's books that I've read. That being said, it was easier for me to understand what was going on. I love that she tackled the question: why do people suffer if God won? And, is God still good if bad this happen to us? Hope does this in a non-preachy way that is fresh and invigorating while keeping true to her story, characters and beliefs. Can't wait to see what she whips up next! Great job, Hope!

This was an amazing book by an amazing author. I've loved all the Legends of the Light, but so far, this has been the best. The characters were well-writing, the plot with high stakes and plenty of action, and the Christian themes woven in so well that they were a part of the story, not just Bible verses thrown into a book to make it "Christian".
Now, I have to admit, I was confused in some parts. I got the general idea of the plot, and the flashbacks(which I usually hate reading) were well-done and tied into the plot great. But if you asked to tell you exactly what was going on, in some part I wouldn't be able to. Overall, however, I will be re-reading this book many times to come despite the few faults within.
As a Christian(and this being Allegorical Christian YA Fantasy) I could pick out the Christian themes easily, but they weren't in-your-face obvious or so obscure one has to squint to find them. At the same time, I think a non-Christian could enjoy this book as a clean, good option to some(okay, most) of the YA fiction out there anymore. There was some gore and torture, but nothing that I would say is to graphic or needs to be toned down. In fact, I think Hope handled that part very well. This is a book I think my nine-year-old brother could read safely, while people at eighteen and above can still enjoy it for it's high stakes and saucy characters.
So all in all, I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family, and will keep watching out for more of Hope's writings. Keep up the great work, Hope!
