On duty, Tampa homicide lieutenant Carl Kane hunts for the killer of a woman found floating in the Hillsborough Bay. As he tracks down leads, more and more pieces of the suspect’s description trickle in.

When evidence from a seemingly unrelated double homicide points to the same suspect, Kane is at a loss to explain the connection.

It doesn’t take long before the lieutenant gets some answers—answers that could put everything in the life he now enjoys into immediate jeopardy.

Between life-changing news, an ex-wife who wants him back, and one of the most ruthless men he’s ever been up against, Lieutenant Kane is tasked with more than bringing a killer to justice. He must keep a loved one, as well as himself, alive long enough to have a chance.

I am a retired cop out of Reno Nevada. On the job for 23 years. I have read hundreds of this type of books and find that putting the main character in trouble or someone close to him in trouble in every book is boring and not a very good mystery story. It's just a lazy author. I have read the first three books and I'll finish this one but until the author comes up with a better story line I'm through

Not as good as the first two, I an rarely impressed when stories, especially a series, start to go after cops loved ones or the cops themselves.

Lt. Carl Kane, Sergeant Hank Rawlings, and Callie are all back starring in the wild thriller, "Determinant", from author E.H. Reinhard. This is third book in the Kane series and picks up about two months after the "Spearman" case. (Book two: "Requite). Russian mobster Andrei, AKA "Ray", a monster of a man who stands well over six foot and 350 Lbs. of pure muscle. Ray is in Tampa to get something back for his brother Viktor. Ray uses only the best things in life. The most expensive Scotch to drink, naturally the most expensive suits, and of course a Bentley to drive. Ray is sloppy and leaves bodies in his wake to the pure detrimental fury of brother Viktor. Within Ray's mission Viktor's orders of how to proceed get continually ignored. Viktor would love to just kill Ray, but needs him to a certain point. Meanwhile, Carl and Callie are all but living together. Callie totally upends Carl's world when she informs him of her pregnancy. Worst yet for stunned Carl his miserable ex-wife is calling over and over begging to get back together again. Also, Carl's sister is on ex-wife Sam's side and wants Carl to go back to miserable Sam. The pressure between Carl and Callie gets magnified by this ex-wife development in addition to a baby coming. Does Carl at his age want a baby to complicate his life more ? Carl keeps telling Callie, he's on her side, but she's wary it'll stay that way. Things will get much worse when Viktor hits Tampa for the sole purpose of getting his metal briefcase back that Callie seems to have. (Ray's sole mission). Ray is making mess after mess, then especially when he figures out Carl is a cop. So now Carl knows somethings up with Callie and her past. Russian mobsters searching for Callie and some metal case are a real mystery. Callie's past is apparently not what it seems. When Ray finally abducts Callie, Carl is on a mission to save her. Complete with shoot outs, high speed boat chases, and a gun battle between boats keeps this book in action overdrive. I thought the plot was a little weak, and ending needed to be cleaner/ clearer. However, it was still a mesmerizing read. Author Reinhard's unusual, and unique characters are a blast to follow. Surprisingly Hank gets kind of left behind some in this outing. I read it in two sittings. At just over 200 pages it gets the job done being a good thriller. Going with four stars out of a possible five stars for author E.H. Reinhard's, "Determinant", the third book of the excellent Lt. Carl Kane series. Check this series out. It'been a real blast reading since I discovered it.

A bit too violent for my taste, graphic descriptions of fights, finished the book primary as a distraction from outside events, easily forgotten, but need to avoid additional books by this author.

Another excellent read by E.H. Reinhardt. I have read four of his books now and haven't been disappointed yet. Excellent characters keep the plot rolling. I am getting started on # 5 for me.

Lieutenant Kane is a really solid character and I hope he stays around for a long time.

Pretty good!

The third book in the series and feel like I'm really getting to know Lt. Kane now. Takes a while to get going but towards the end couldn't put it down. Not quite as good as the first 2 in the series but still a good read.

Reinhard does a very credible job while using some almost hackneyed stereotypes. The hero, Carl Kane, is your divorced workaholic homicide detective who has a nagging sister, colleagues unafraid to prank one another, and a bartender-turned-girlfiend with a mysterious past. The murder scenes are brutal and the fights are realistic. The man knows his guns. He knows his city (Tampa) and he's just an absolute wiz at solving crimes and escaping the bitter end promised by his enemies. This is the third of the 6 story arc in the Cases of Lieutenant Kane series, and with three more to unfold, it's getting more and more interesting.

Like crime thrilllers? Police procedurals? Hard-ass cops? Good dialog? Then pick up the first in any of Reinhard's series and see if they don't bite you and invite you back. I'm now a fan and expect to finish the final 3 in this series in short order! Great escapist reading!

I couldn't bring myself up to finish this book. I enjoy a good thriller or a mystery book, but after i read more than 30 percent of the story, I felt so unwilling to continue that I had to abandon it. The main characters were lifeless, this Callie chick was so fake, so book-like and predictable and of course the bad guy was Russian…Why not for a while taking a surprising set of people and writing about them. The bad guy could for example be French, how about that? Out of ideology and political correctness, we always know in advance what we are going to read. I can skipped with no regrets…

Ok

For some reason I just do not like his girlfriend, Callie. She is too young, naive, I don’t know. A very shallow character. I kept hoping she was a criminal and was sent to jail to get her deleted from the books. All of these books are fair and I keep hoping the writing gets better. It does not seem to get better. Glad the books are free since I would not purchase them.

Big criminals need a big detective to solve the case.

This was a physical case and LT Kane was best from one end to the other solving this Russian Mob' s case. His girlfriend had a bigger part too. I really enjoyed this book and I am going to #4 book in this series now! Really fun to read these stories.

I plan to read all the books in this series

This is the first book in the series but I plan to go back and read the previous books. I agree with some of the reviews I read before getting this book and some of the actions don’t totally ring true but, after all, it’s fiction. I like alt. Kane Abe plan to enjoy the rest of the books in the series.

Once again Kane saved the day but not without a lot of physical suffering. My Hero. Callie is a lucky girl. Any author (especially E.H. Reinhard) that can bring the reader (that's Me) into the story almost as a player is a great writer of fictitious drama. My kind of books to read are the books I become a part of and that's not very often.

Kane has a relationship going on and a hectic police life. All of a sudden, his ex wants to talk and get back together, His new squeeze is not happy about that, says she loves him, and by-the-way is pregnant. Kane can't think straight. Meanwhile, his TPD work is crazy, and then gets intertwined with his love life.
Pretty good read.

On the fence

There were some portions of this book that were completely absorbing......tense, well written descriptive parts. Others were humdrum, edging on boring. The biggest problem for me was Callie. For some reason her character didn't work for me and by the end of the book I felt that Kane had been subtly sent in the wrong direction.

Predictable

The story moved along fine with no real surprises. Most of the direction was on a predictable coarse. The tough lead character was expected to take out the superhuman foe so no surprises there. All in all the story wasn't all that mysterious but a good read nonetheless. Violance but no foul language or steamy sex scenes was a plus for me. I hope you enjoy the read

Fight scenes are a tad gory and perhaps too drawn out (for MY preference) but an otherwise excellent read. Action packed, good character development, filled with unexpected twists. Family/friends of the main characters being threatened (tho perhaps far fetched?) adds to the excitement intensity... and that's ok...this is entertainment! Love the Kane series.

Great page turner

I absolutely love EH Reinhard's books and this series has me glued to my tablet. I really like that Reinhard threw in a little bit of Kane's personal life and did it without comprising the intensity and drama of the story.

Determinant

This would have been a much better book had it ended a few chapters earlier. It reminded me of the typical Hollywood movie where the bad guy continues to “come back” again and again. Enough already.

Action packed

Kane gets caught up in a homicide investigation, Callie ends up being taken by the bad guys-just after she's told Kane she's pregnant. He will go to any lengths to save her.

WOW

Good lord, I read most of this in one sitting. I'm writing this at 2:45am, if that says anything. I didn't even realize that I was reading book 3 and not book 1. Though definitely gruesome, this book deserves more than 5 stars.

Love how this story just keeps on with the action ! Wasn’t sure how Cali was mixed with Ray in the beginning, but as I read on of course, figured it out ... And then to leave us hanging about Rays being dead or alive ....!! Really good read !

Good Bulld Up.

Determinant, just cruises along nicely, gathering speed, momentum and suspense along the way. There is a bit of a gaff toward the end that doesn't effect the story, but little contradictions can be distracting. In the end the good guys win and that's all we want.
