I was cautios when I started this novel written by Victor Kernbach as he lacked the notoriety of a Science Fiction writer. Plus, I had not seen too many Romanian SF, especially published during communist era. But this one proved I am wrong and quality SF novels can be found even in Romanian literature. Based probably on his research related to myths, for which he is well known in Romania, this novel was a pleasant read for me, that I am not necessarily a huge fan of the genre.

Analyzing various aspects of the nove, I will start up with the premise. Pretty easy to observe the author wanted to transmit with this novel that in the humanity early history there were alien contacts that changed us. Not necessarily by genetic manipulation, but by interfering with the human society and planting the seeds for a better one. With this, he probably thought it is a good thing to revive also Atlantis and incorporate it in the story. It was an interesting premise, but did not convinced me and this is why I will give it a 3.

Regarding the form, I was pretty well impressed regarding how good this author writes. With a very crisp phrase and logical story that builds up gradually, I will give it a 4 for form.

In terms of originality, I recall a novel or short story from Arthur C. Clarke on the same topic, except the Atlantis piece. Written in the early '60s, I am uncertain which was first, but anyhow I believe the idea of alien contact in the distant past of humanity was pretty popular in SF literature. I will give it a 2 at originality.

The characters are again a good surprise. With minor exceptions, they are full rounded characters, that learn and change over time. Character names were also very well choosen from various myths or historical people that lived in the region about the time of the novel. If the main character, Auta, and the evil leader, Tefnaht, would have been constructed more carefully in order to be more clear their motives and to be more constrasting, I could have rate it higher. In such a situation, I will rate it with a 3.

Regarding the complexity and difficulty, I admit that documenting for it must have been a very strenous task. But as the author already had started the work on ancient world myths, this would have been just a nice way of transforming them into a fiction work. I will rate it with a 3 for complexity and difficulty.

In terms of credibility I feel that this was the vulnerable point of the novel. While it became obvious (in epilogue) that the author believed that at least in general lines this was not a fiction, I am unable to agree on it. If we remain on the fiction ground itself, it is also pretty hard to believe it, as the aliens are from Mars, which we have information that could not have been a home for Earth-like human forms. At least not in the past 10-20.000 years, when the story presumably takes place. Another point is that while I do not argue too much the existence of alien civilizations, the chances of them being pretty much similar to humans or to be able to live in human-like conditions, are extremely slim. This is why I will rate it with a 1.

The last criteria is edition. I had an eBook with some minor flaws. But they were not so disturbing and I could enjoy the novel thoroughly. Due to this, I will rate it with a 4.

To summarize, I discovered a surprisingly well written SF novel and a new author that convinced me to give him credit for other writings. All in all, my final rating for this novel is 2.85, which I will round to a 3 on Goodreads system.

The book has a plot that is easy to follow . The characters, although with complicated names are easy to remember. They are all unique and they differentiate from one another through their unusual acts.
I liked the fact that the simplicity of the action si combined with symbolism; the names, the regions, the rivers , even their beliefs are related to real names. The author describes an ancient world and has an interesting view of how our way of thinking is influenced by others, by the environment.
I found this a Science Fiction writing that underlines the fact that the truth is seen differently and that one has to be really informed in order to have a real view about things, about the world.

Cunoscut mai mult pentru studiile despre mitologie, Victor Kernbach a scris și acest surprinzător roman SF, pe care l-am citit acum 20 de ani și de care îmi aduc aminte cu plăcere.
