Roald Dahl was a beloved British author, poet, screenwriter, and wartime fighter pilot, best known for his enchanting and often darkly humorous children's books that have captivated generations of readers around the world. Born in Llandaff, Wales, to Norwegian parents, Dahl led a life marked by adventure, tragedy, creativity, and enduring literary success. His vivid imagination and distinctive storytelling style have made him one of the most celebrated children's authors in modern literature. Before becoming a writer, Dahl lived a life filled with excitement and hardship. He served as a Royal Air Force pilot during World War II, surviving a near-fatal crash in the Libyan desert. His wartime experiences and travels deeply influenced his storytelling, often infusing his works with a sense of danger, resilience, and the triumph of the underdog. After the war, he began writing for both adults and children, showing a rare versatility that spanned genres and age groups. Dahl's children's books are known for their playful use of language, unforgettable characters, and a deep sense of justice, often pitting clever children against cruel or foolish adults. Some of his most iconic titles include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, James and the Giant Peach, Fantastic Mr Fox, and The Witches. These works are filled with fantastical elements and moral undertones, empowering young readers to challenge authority, think independently, and believe in the impossible. Equally acclaimed for his work for adults, Dahl wrote numerous short stories characterized by their macabre twists and dark humor. His stories were frequently published in magazines such as The New Yorker and later compiled into bestselling collections like Someone Like You and Kiss Kiss. He also wrote screenplays, including the James Bond film You Only Live Twice and the adaptation of Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Despite his literary success, Dahl was a complex and sometimes controversial figure, known for his strong opinions and difficult personality. Nonetheless, his books continue to be treasured for their wit, originality, and the sense of wonder they inspire. Many of his stories have been adapted into successful films, stage plays, and television specials, further cementing his legacy. Dahl's impact on children's literature is immeasurable. His ability to connect with young readers through a mix of irreverence, heart, and imagination has made his stories timeless. Even after his death, his books remain in print and continue to be read by millions of children worldwide. His writing not only entertains but also encourages curiosity, courage, and compassion. Roald Dahl's work lives on as a testament to the power of storytelling and the magic of a truly original voice. He remains a towering figure in literature whose creations continue to spark joy, mischief, and inspiration across generations.
the first ever books i read when i was 9 years old and have loved reading ever since then im now 23, these are awesome books my favourite was/is James and the giant peach and George's marvellous medicine.
I read every single Roald Dahl book in the Olds library when I was a child and LOVED them. I grew up in the library in a sense because my mom would work there so after school me and my sister would walk there and spend hours there while she finished work.
Roald Dahl (September 13, 1916 to November 23, 1990) was a British author who penned 19 children's books over his decades-long writing career. In 1953 he published the best-selling story collection Someone Like You and married actress Patricia Neal. He published the popular book James and the Giant Peach in 1961. In 1964 he released another highly successful work, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was later adapted for two films.
I actually picked up the book "More about Boy" at the library, but it does not appear at Goodreads. I totally understand why. It is the same story as Boy, but with lots more photos from his own collection from his youth. So it added to the previous story, but not really much new to read
FANTASTIC MR FOX Dahl manages to create the perfect anti-hero in this kids book - a thief who we are actually supporting. He's not stealing for any reason other than to eat, yet those he is stealing from are shown as villains, and at no point do we think this reasoning is incorrect! Absolute genius!
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY Roald Dahl's most famous novel is also one of his most memorable- there aren't many people who have read this that couldn't recite most of the plot points verbatim.
CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR Not as memorable as the first book, but filled with just as many clever observations.
MATILDA A wonderful children's story about how genius can often be overlooked if you don't have the right support system in place. Being one of Roald Dahl's last published books before his death in 1990, this book can at times read like a friendlier version of Carrie, with slapstick taking the place of outright murder. A great read, even for adults.
THE BFG Genuinely scary for small children, this story of a loveable giant is just as effective today as it was when i read it as a child.
THE TWITS Such a silly book, I loved this as a kid and read it multiple times.
JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH Although not as humorous as some of Dahl's other works, the ideas are still funny and silly and will keep kids entertained.
GEORGE'S MARVELLOUS MEDICINE One of my favourites, in spite of being mainly filler. And the kid kills his gran? How wrong is that?
- PUFFIN BOOKS, level? - Time 11/6 = 20 minutes: 11/9 = 25 minutes: 11/11 = 20 minutes: 11/12 = 20 minutes - 7-word summary: Boggis - Bunce - Bean - hate - Mr Fox - plan - shooting - Discussion questions: 1. What kind of mistakes have you ever done? I have memorized different name of food menu from real name of that in my part time job, so I said mistakes to customers several times. 2.Have you ever dug a hole? Maybe, I haven't dug a hole, but I often played in the sand when I was a child.
This book is little longer than usual this series. It was interesting that three farmers planed to shoot Mr Fox, but he noticed that.
A fantastic childhood author, works i have read include, Charlie n chocolate factory Matilda James n giant peach Georges marvellous medicine The twits The witches Danny champion of the world Fantastic mr fox He has a great humour and warmth with bizarre characters and fantastical ideas and themes.
Jatuh cinta sama Matilda sejak kanak-kanak membuat saya akhirnya memburu versi bahasa Inggris dari buku-buku Roald Dahl ini. Akhirnya, setelah beberapa kali waiting list, boxset Roald Dahl ini pun sekarang duduk manis di deretan buku favorit saya.
