A woman who is pushing 40 loses her job and her fiance all in one day. Driving to her hometown of Bliss Bay, she and her sister find a dead man in a car parked in front of a diner. From there, they try to go on with their lives, but other murders follow. When she gets to her parents' house, she finds they've adopted a street cat, that can be vicious, but loves her.
The woman and her uncle start to poke around, and find clues that they give to the cops, and more or less accidentally solve the murder, and another crime to go with it.
The catchy cover and name invited me to read the book. It is the first book in a new series Bay BlessBless and a new author for me. The writing and editing produce a smooth flowing book, easy to read. I felt it was for of a novel than a mystery. The characters are one-sided and need more development. Some things I like about the book, no one was telling the Megan, the MC to stop investigating the murders, there are 3. The MC was never in danger. At first, the cat was called Cat as the story develop we learned his name is Tabastion. I highly recommend this book.
Right on page one, we get confronted with a murder – at the Comedy Club in Bliss Bay, no less! Andy Cochran, the owner of the club, has been brutally stabbed with a pole during the night; on his cheek, traces of a yellow powder are found which are identified as pollen.
Two months later, Megan Fallon who’s just been dumped by her fiancé and lost her job, is coming home to Bliss Bay to organise her parents’ celebration of renewed marriage vows; she hasn’t been home in a long time because she wants to avoid her ex-husband and his new wife. And when she and her sister arrive at the diner outside town early in the morning, what should they find but another murdered man in his car! Victor Canning, 74, has been strangled – and the pollen on his cheek points to a connection with the other murder two months earlier.
The little village is all upside down now – which one of the peaceful inhabitants could be a murderer? That’s not the only thing that worries the townspeople, though; the old school building is going to be torn down and a new hypermarket will be built, which they aren’t keen on at all. Nevertheless, Megan decides to stay in town for a while and take care of her parents’ house while they go on a cruise – and of Cat, a very clever tabby whom they’ve adopted. The idyll is soon disturbed again, though, when a third murder happens! Now, Megan and her Uncle Des start investigating on their own in order to restore peace and quiet to Bliss Bay…
There’s a wonderfully strange contrast between the cosy country life and the series of murders that starts right on the first page; the people (apart from Megan’s ex and his wife) are all perfectly loveable – and yet, one of them has got to be a devious murderer! With a lot of warmth and sympathy, Sherri Bryan paints the picture of a sleepy little English village which is suddenly disturbed by unbelievable events. An enjoyable read from start to finish!
Megan Fallon is facing upheaval in her life (through her lost job, lost fiance, lost hairdresser and daughter on a gap year) and so returns to the family home for a bit of downtime. When she and her sister are first on the scene of a grisly murder, Megan becomes embroiled in the mystery.
The book takes a gentle and meandering path to the unveiling of the murderer. I needed to suspend disbelief at some aspects of the story while others were spot-on. For the most part, I was really entertained and will revisit this series at a later time.
There is so much going on and unusually the reveal of the murderer occurs with 4 chapters to go. There are so many loose ends and another crime to solve. It has humour and no swearing. A recovering alcoholic and his niece take on the task to find a serial killer. The cat is an integral part of this making sure that those whom she didn't like knew about it......painfully. Easy read and the narrator was very good. I didn't have any problem with male and female characters. I recommend this book.
This is another charming little village with a murder, but then there is another body, and then a third - does Bliss Bay have a serial killer? Megan and her uncle Des ask a lot of questions and ultimately assist the constabulary in the solution to the mysteries. This took a while to get into, may have been my mood, but it seemed to have a lot of characters that were unrelated and confused the narrative. The first body didn't seem to relate to the rest of the book until much further along; by the second murder things picked up a bit. Kudos to the cat for being a real treasure ;-D

I didn’t dislike this book. The characters are fine, the story line is fine. There’s just nothing to rave about. My biggest complaint is one I’ve seen so often. Writers can be good at their job, but editors should be as well. Correct pronoun use seems to be a thing of the past, and that bothers me.
I got confused by all the names. The cat was great. I loved that. I don't think a full confession in public from the murderer would be possible in real life. Police procedures are different. It was like the writer didn't know how to end the book. It kept going. I think the 'cat story' could have been left out.

Especially one named CAT! Okay, I know. Lots of cat-haters would, well, hate that. But I don’t. Bodies, Baddies, and a Crabby Tabby, book one of A Bliss Bay Village cozy mystery series oldie but goodie that entertained me for hours. I’m easy to entertain. In this set-up book, we meet Megan Fallon, who becomes intertwined in an English village murder mystery. What do you expect? It’s a cozy mystery. As a darn good event planner, Megan finds it easy to stick her nose in everyone’s business while she plans her parent’s marriage renewal ceremony. But, not all the villagers remember middle-aged Megan as a great child once raised to adulthood in their small berg. Of course, their bias might be more along the lines of keeping Megan from learning they are a cold-blooded killer. What will Megan do for love? Find out in this first-of-six classic cozy mystery with all six titles finished and available for consumption. This is a clean, lighthearted, mystery read with no strong profanity, violence, or sex, and is written in British English.

Woman down on her luck heads back to her small hometown village to help plan a vow renewal for her parents. Takes place in the UK, so some lingo adjustment is needed for those of us in US. Deck chairs instead of camp chairs, cool box instead of cooler, serviette instead of napkin, etc. it’s in context, so not overly difficult to decipher.
My issues with the story are plot plausibility and the writing itself. - The main characters refers to her parents as first names. As in “Natalie said” instead of “Mom said.” It’s confusing and odd. - I don’t recall a character speaking something that wasn’t “said” or “asked.” Every time. It was disjointed, jarring, and interrupted the flow of the story. You don’t need to say “Megan said” or “said Megan” after every sentence. You can have “Megan took a bite of cake” or some action to depict the speaker. - The ending was a hot mess. The story lines conveniently wrapped up but in a very anti-climatic way. - The reasons and justifications the murder gave for their actions are ludicrous. There were much easier, less lethal, ways to achieve the same goal. - The fact that the murders could’ve been avoided had one person not been so meek is ridiculous.
Overall, I’m disappointed. The story had real potential.
I found this e-book when I was looking for free Christian fiction. While I would not call this Christian, it is a PG-rated mystery novel worth the read. There was no profanity, sex or other objectionable material. The name of God was used appropriately. Those engaged in questionable conduct were not described in a positive manner. There was a bit of friendly romance, but nothing steamy or distracting.
Not only did I enjoy the interactions between the characters in this novel, but the author did a great job of unveiling clues in this whodunnit believably. It took me a while to figure out who the guilty party was, since there were so many possibilities, but I did correctly before the culprit was revealed. The author also did a fantastic job of tying up all the loose threads of the various elements in the story.
I loved the cultural nuances of this British book. I had no idea when I ordered it that it was set in England, but the different spellings and expressions for things cued me right away.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries this is a good one. Cat lovers in particular will enjoy the fact that one of the heroes is a fierce feline with a mystery background of his own!
This book I downloaded from Amazon as promotion probably because it was 1st book in the series.
This is a cozy crime/mystery book about a woman who was between the jobs and temoprary moved to her parents village. The story ticked all the boxes but it was little too light for me - I couldn't read more than a single chapter and not fall asleep. Namely, only at half way of the book started some kind of action.
This is my assessment of Bodies, baddies and a Crabby Tabby by Sherry Bryan according to 7 criteria: 1. Too long and strenuous action - exciting - 2 stars 2. Boring - fun - 2 stars 3. It is not difficult to read (as for non English native speakers) - 3 stars 4. Predictable (common) - good story (unusual) - 3 stars 5. Shalow story - has a deeper meaning - 3 stars 6. The story is mass and unfinished - The story is a clear, understandable, and well-rounded story - 2 stars 7. Dry and uninspired style of writing - Smooth style with humorous and fun characters - 2 stars (the best character in the book was cat Tabastion)
This is the first book in the Bliss Bay Village Mystery Series and a great start to a new series. Our Main Character, Megan Fallon has returned home to Bliss Bay after losing her job and fiance. She's not sure she will stay in Bliss Bay and figures she will probably leave after she arranges her Parents' renewal of their vows party. But in this book there are three murders and a stray cat that has taken to Megan and turns into her protector and her Uncle Des wants her to investigate and he will join her. And what is with the injured football star and his wife? Megan and Uncle Des seem to find so many possible suspects and are the three murders connected. Wow! What a roller coaster ride we are on trying to put all the pieces together. Add to that and a big corporation wants to demolish the old school and put up a mega mall, much to the townspeople's ire. This is a well written book and I can't wait to see where this series leads! I received a copy of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Megan Fallon returns to her parents home to the Village of Bliss Bay for a visit after she loses her job as an event Coordinator. When her company moves overseas, her fiance has left her, and her daughter is away in New Zealand. The main downfall is her ex-husband and his wife (her high school nemesis) also live there.
Her sister is riding down with her to their parents home and they stop in for breakfast at a diner on the way. They discover the man in the car they parked by was dead instead of just asleep. His death winds up being related to other murders that happened in town, and she Megan along with her uncle will set out to solve the crimes and keep the town as peaceful as it always has been.
This is a fun story that although slow paced, is entertaining, and witty. It has well developed characters and a solid plot line. It also has the benefit of the main character NOT winding up in a relationship with the local law officer.
This was a pretty good start to a new series too me. Megan Fallon is in a pickle she is an empty nester she is unemployed, and her fiancé has run off with her hairdresser, so she heads back to her hometown. When three murders occur in this small town, she begins to investigate along with her uncle Des. I loved all the characters in this book and the mystery of the cat was also really good. The people in the town are worried because the old school has been bought and will be torn down. This was a good read with a strange loveable cat. When the murder is found it's a surprise and the school get saved. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
What a great title! Unfortunately, the book was just okay. It seems to talk about everything in the MC's life and you are into a quarter of the book, before they even start sleuthing about the murder. It seemed to meander on and on. It was like the author couldn't decide what she want to be the main idea of the book. There were the murders, the party, her lost job, her love life, her family, the mega store coming into the village and on and on. I understand that it was a first in the series and you had to get readers up to speed about the place and people, but come on, you don't need to include EVERYTHING.
Even though the book slogged on and on, it was an okay read. The main hook of the book was the title. As they say, 'don't judge a book by its title.'
A cat, a newly unemployed and single empty nester, a few murders, good friends and loving family led toward a charming little mystery. Megan returns home to plan her parents renewal of marriage vows party, and stays long enough to play amateur sleuths with her Uncle Des, after learning of three suspicious deaths. With time on her hands and feeling a little scared to stay alone in her parent's home with a murderer running around, Megan figures no harm will come of their light snooping.
Some nostalgia as she remembers everything she loved about her home town, a few mysteries to keep her mind buzzing, and a new pet to care for, her time in Bliss Bay may lead to her staying indefinitely. After she catches a killer.
Wonderful characters, Megan, Uncle Des, Aunt Sylvie, Petal, even those who ended up on the wrong side struck a chord in my mind. Good descriptions of the idyllic village life with excellent reminders of what being neighbors is all about. There were times when the movement from one scene to the next was rather sudden but the sudden movement was forgotten as the next scene developed. What was really lovely is that all the mysteries that were introduced in the story were unraveled and no loose ends were left hanging to persuade the reader to buy book 2. I want to buy Book 2 because Book 1 did not disappoint. A lovely read.
This is a really good read. The pace is even and not overdone with "fill"... in other words, it moves right along and maintains one's interest. I'm sure that following the story of the residents of Bliss Bay will be most interesting. I recommend this book as a good "cozy" read. As an American I enjoy the British euphemisms such as a "tic" instead of a "sec" and so on. I also listen to a lot of British audio books and radio drama...it is really a hoot to compare the difference in the pronunciation of different words. All in all I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more of Sherri Bryan's endeavors.
Quite an interesting story, I must say. The first thing that piqued me was the writing style the book began with. It's different from the 'normal' cosy mystery writing style. This story had me laughing at times and perplexed the next.
This Bliss Bay Village Mystery, book 1, sets up a series of a town full of gossip. Megan returns home, stops for coffee, and walks into murder one.
Mystery one is followed by two, three, and four. Too much for one novel. What do you think?
Right. Too many storylines and town bios to remember for book 2. However, the flow is well-penned, and Megan's communication skills lead to a worthy ending.
Even the mystery of the Tabby, a cat for Americans, has a hard-rock ending. BODIES is my first cozy English mystery which was longer than average; however fun to read.
Nothing like a good cozy to curl up with. All the better when a brilliant cat is included. Megan returns home to a serial killer, rekindled old friendships, and the charms of village life. Will she, and her recovering alcoholic turned baker Uncle Des, solve the mystery to the relief of the other villagers? Tabastion Cat, who has saved Megan on two occasions, has a mystery of his own to be solved. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
What a waste of good reading time. Stuck with it as so hoped it woooksuld get better, but it sure didnt !
This is one type of book that American Cosy Crime authors excellent at. I felt that what this book was , trying to transpose the idea over here the uk, in exactly the same format, but for me it really didn't con off. When I saw there was 3 of these book I down loaded all 3, but now won't bother with the other 2..
