It's supposed to be a five-star rating because I finally found another favorite volume but I just didn't liked what happened in chapter 71. It could have been delivered better, but we ended up with a . I mean, come on. Is that supposed to be cute in shoujo manga standards? Because I sure am not a fan.
They went on a date! I will admit because she is so almost stunted in this relation I would rather have seen just more cutesy stuff than what happened in the last chapter.
kay okay i am gonna say something good about this i guess since i have read 12! volumes!
this is making me feel like i would enjoy some sports manga/show but the problem with that it's usually all boys cast and then it becomes either very shounen for me or on the opposite end on tumblr i would be grappling with hardcore yaoi fangirls. but idk the sports bit in this was fun and i do genuinely like the whole intense vibe sports brings to the already intense vibe of high school and coming-of-age stories. very taylor swift 'long live' vibe.
also, i like any and every childhood friends turned enemies/rivals turned literally anything as long as they interact later in life (even if that is a brief acknowledgement of each other, that nod between draco and harry at the station gets me i am not kidding) story so i quite like watching shou and shizuka esp with the flashbacks. ('if you have children some day, when they point to the pictures please tell them my name. tell'em how the crowds went wild, tell'em how i hope they shine': ok i am listening to it rn)
i like the families. i feel like whenever shoujos do not have family interactions, they are missing out on so much wholesomeness. i liked that shou's family was quite simple and nice and not complicated and angsty like how these male leads families usually are (idk i was thinking it'll be usui 2.0 you know which would explain why he is so weird so idk if it is that great because at least we know usui was so overbearing because of his family situation but naruse's the most normal family)
i even like their relationship sometimes, esp now that they have been dating for a bit the toxic shit has reduced a bit and sometimes they just look like young kids being vulnerable be each other, hoping to be loved, taking care of the other and hoping to be taken care of in return without getting hurt. and it's almost sweet. man teenagers have it so rough no wonder they have a short fuse.
*I don't care what anyone says, and you cannot convince me otherwise--YUKI WAS GUILTED AND FORCED INTO SEX WITH NARUSE* Yes, she goes along with it, but it wasn't because she wanted to, rather she felt obligated since she couldn't give an excuse to say no and they have been dating for over a year. Naruse even says he'll wait until she's ready, but Yuki feels obligated and ADMITS to FORCING HERSELF to have sex with him to appease him after feeling slightly shamed from his comments as well. Um, no. NO! Do you know what we call this? I do, and I'm not calling it consensual.
I absolutely HATE this rhetoric because this opens the door for women to say yes when they don't want/mean to, blurring the lines of consent and actual desire, create a dangerous situation and trauma for both parties (criminally+ for the man and emotionally, physically, and psychologically+ for the women), placing their wants aside for others, and to make it worse, they are young. This is a TERRIBLE message for the audience and teens in relationships when consent is IMPORTANT.
Can we please stop making women disregard things they are uncomfortable with and placing the needs of men over them? Thanks.
Just when I was starting to appreciate the romance, this volume...At this point, I'm not even sure why I'm still reading.
This volume bundles chapters 66-71. Now that Naruse and Yuki have made their relationship public, it's time for her to meet his family. Additionally, as Naruse's senior year of high school winds down, he starts thinking about where he wants to go to college. Exam season is just around the corner, and Yuki promises that they'll go on a real date when it's all over with.
By the time these chapters haven taken place, Yuki and Naruse have been dating for about a year--and now that the secret is out, all of their friends can't believe they never noticed. While I still want to see how everything unfolds for them, this collection of chapters was just okay for me. Mostly because Yuki has been struggling all this time to be honest with Naruse, much less herself. He can be pushy, but he got a gold star for saying that he's willing to wait for her to feel comfortable before taking their relationship to the next level.
Cheeky Brat is a thoroughly enjoyable young romance. Yuki is the high school basketball team manager, a very stoic and dedicated individual who is always professional in her job and in her personal life. Stumbling upon her when she's showing an unusual bit of emotion, Haruse, the team's cheeky playboy, is intrigued with Yuki and pursues her romantically. Their romance continues to be about opposites that attract. Her dedication to avoiding romance is infuriating, but it doesn't make it any less enjoyable to read. I see many comparisons to Maid Sama, but My Little Monster also comes to mind. I enjoyed the story, and especially the likeably awkward third point on the love triangle. Additionally, the illustrations, especially those of the basketball players, are excellent.
This volume of the series is the best and most engaging. Worth sticking with it to the end of the series.
This series is just so fun. It's an unusual romance and hard to explain. But it's so sweet because Shou really sees Yuki and is so patient without being passive.
