In the Requiem

Rate this book
The end is always a beginning.

Weighed down by scandal, Captain Jamie Callahan must choose between saving his family’s reputation and political aspirations, or taking down the enemy once and for all. Whatever choice Jamie makes will have lasting repercussions he can’t escape, and which Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan will suffer as well.

Against an escalating political nightmare, the one truth Jamie can believe in is Kyle’s love, but that won’t be enough to clear their names. The odds are stacked ever higher against Alpha Team, and outmaneuvering an enemy metahuman is a daunting, almost impossible task. When the other side strikes, all hell breaks loose in the country’s capital, and no one is prepared for the tragedy the attack leaves in its wake.

Infinity stars for this series

I can’t believe it is over. What an amazing ride.

In the Requiem is the amazing book finale in the Metahuman Files series. The year is 2086, global warming happened, and we have Metahumans as a result of a chemical bomb called Splice. The series follows the MDF Alpha team, led by Captain Jamie Callahan, as they fight crime and try to juggle their personal relationships. The MDF team consist of Metahumans with different powers. This one picks up right after the events of book 4 and finally we get the much-needed closure on the case that has been haunting the Alpha Team.

I Love! Love this series, it is X-men + Avengers on steroids. The author did an amazing job here. The writing is consistent, and I have not been disappointed so far. The action and suspense was so on point. And when the author decided to be mean, I was so much heartbroken and angry at the way she did it. Mean Hailey! Mean! I was warned, but reading finally did it for me. Thanks to Simone and her voodoo doll, after some stabbing I was able to continue reading.

The Characters are so lovable and you can’t help but root for them. They are also flawed, and real. What I love most about Hailey’s writing is there is no unnecessary Miscommunication, when they disagree they talk it out, like the way it should be.

This book, like book four, follows Jamie and Kyle, Alexei and Sean’s. The author does shine here. The balance between these two relationships and how they are portrayed is so different and interesting to read.

Jamie and Kyle are the hot couple they have some sort of D/S relationship in the bedroom. It was magnificent, the way Kyle submits to Jamie… 🤤🤤I was like. This is how to write a D/S relationship, some authors should take notes. These two did heat up the pages.

He’d slipped the stainless steel plug into Kyle’s hole at the end of their lovemaking last night, making sure to keep Kyle full of his cum. The sharp gasp Kyle let out made Jamie smile.
“Did you touch it?” Jamie asked.
“No, sir.”
“Good.
Jamie lazily tracked his gaze up and down Kyle’s semi-clothed body. “I want you naked.”
“Yes, sir,” Kyle said
“Keep going,” he instructed,
“I’d like your cock please, sir.”
Jamie drew his hands back and tugged on Kyle’s hips. “Sit up.”
Kyle moved immediately, turning his head so he could look at Jamie over his shoulder. A warm flush had spread across his cheeks, making his freckles stand out a little. He waited, kneeling over Jamie’s lap, ready and willing to obey.

Sooooo hot.

Alexei and Sean are the sweet couple, the sex between them is the sensual type, fun, And they love mirrors. I love that Sean was able to come out of his shell and be with Alexei. I would love to be with Alexei. 😍

Mm,” Sean murmured, stretching a little, still-half asleep. “Lyosha?”
Alexei brushed his finger against Sean’s prostate in a slow, teasing way that made Sean jerk a little beneath his mouth. “Dobriy utro, Senichka.”
“God,” Sean moaned, spreading his legs a little. “What time is it?”
“Not get up yet.” Alexei paused before lifting his head and grinning wickedly at Sean. “Some of you get up.”
Sean groaned, the sound getting a little breathy at the end when Alexei increased the pressure on his prostate. “That was fucking terrible, Lyosha.”
“Still love me.”
“Of course I still love you, just not this early in the morning.”
“Watch,” Alexei rumbled.
“We did a lot of watching last night,” Sean said, arching his back a little as Alexei’s hand drifted lower down his chest.
Alexei smirked. “Watch some more.”

So so hot! this woman can sure write some steamy, ice bucket worthy sex scenes.

The secondary characters are also so well written and it would be really nice to get a novella for each of them. Hailey please.

The women in this series do ROCK!!!

I still don’t like Jamie’s father.

Overall I love this series, it is one of my favorites, highly recommended for Sci-fi fans. Just get past the first pages of world building in book 1 and you will be good to go. It is worth it.

"In moments of pain, we seek revenge."
~Ami Ayalon~

In the fifth and last full-length installment in the Metahuman Files, Alpha Team and I geared up for the last stand, for the revenge of their archnemesis being about to happen...

Well, I had the easy job here. I just had to roll up my sleeves and dust off the voodoo doll I was sure I would need again this time because dread was hanging in the air right from the start and Hailey Turner always makes good on her promise to put not only her heroes through the wringer, but also her readers.

But how can you forestall a threat when someone is involved who can see the future? Who already knows every possible outcome and who has nothing left to lose? Who holds all the cards and whose own endgame is uncharted territory? Jamie, who has always been a tower of strength - quite literally - when it comes to keeping his cool in his position as leader of Alpha Team, but whose image had taken a low blow after what happened in the previous book and who is caught between a rock and a hard place due to his position as a Metahuman having his orders and the damage this causes to his family's reputation will find out the hard way what it means to risk everything. He and his team have to give their all to eliminate the threat and save not only themselves and each other, but also the lives of hundreds of innocent people.

But at what cost?

Yeah, and this is pretty much all you will get from me regarding the storyline. I'm sorry, but I have to be extra vague here in order not to spoil anything. And now... let the fangirling begin:

Hands down for me the author hit it out of the ballpark again. She has an imagination that has no equal and what I love the most: she made me see it. Feel it. I experienced each and every scene as if I would be a part of  it. Taking part in it, like phasing with Sean through a building. A weird feeling, I can tell you. ;-) There was never a dull or boring moment. She makes me see the world she built up here as clear as day and what more could I want? The whole team captured my heart from the beginning and each book is like going back to the fold, so of course it's no wonder I suffered vicariously with all of them. I cried my heart out, wanted to punch Jamie's father in the face and laughed about Alexei's comments. Needless to say, I cursed the author from halfway around the world for putting me through the emotional wringer. Again. Dear Hailey, I hope you felt every pinprick in that voodoo doll!!! ;-) At one point I had some serious doubts about a HEA, but trust her to indemnify for everything in the end and make it hurt so good.
They were his family - his Alpha Team - forever and always.
That would never change.

As for me, In the Requiem is pretty balanced as to action, swoon-worthy moments and ice bath requiring sex scenes.
Bildergebnis für gay cuddle gifs

Umm, speaking of sex scenes... I have to clarify one thing for those who have seen my first status update which I made deliberately cryptic and whom I might have given a panic attack: both Jamie and Kyle and Alexei and Sean are exclusive, there is no threesome in case you are still wondering.

The setup is similar to In the Blood, meaning that you get alternating POV's of Jamie, Kyle, Alexei and Sean which only contributes once again to the thrill of the story.

I was over the moon to see Alexei and Sean happy again after all they have been through in the last book. Granted, I knew they would be since they got their recovery time in Out of the Ashes, but seeing them still going strong meant everything to me.
Ähnliches Foto

So, in case I haven't made myself clear enough here and in all my reviews for the whole series, I'm happy to say it again: this series is and always will be one of my all-time favorites!!! I'm in a bit of a wistful mood now, so much so that even the author's note at the end of the book made me cry. It is always hard for me to say goodbye when one of my favorite series comes to an end, but I'm happy to say that it won't be permanent since there are more novellas to come in this universe. And I swear to God, if one of them is not about Liam, I will have to dust off my voodoo doll again, so consider yourself warned, Hailey. ;-)

Highly recommended for all die-hard and soon-to-be fans of this series!

I can't believe we have reached the end of this amazing series.... I have been a huge Hailey fan, ever since I opened book one and she introduced me to the world of sci fi...a world I promised myself I would never enjoy reading about.. Guess I was wrong...Shocker I know, but it does happen at times https://www.google.com/search?q=emoticons

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor I was wrong gif

Now let me start by saying, that you will need to read these books in order, because they have a continuing storyline...Yep, even I did it and we all know how much I love reading shit out of order :P . If you haven't started this series yet, you should definitely give it a go. Just make sure you start with "In the Wreckage" I can honestly say that this author is the bomb when it comes to worldbuilding !!

I am not gonna go into the whole plot of the series, I am just gonna try and lure you all in with the promise of hot, sexy, mutated alpha men, some delicious steam, friendship and family, humor, heartbreak, suspense and action. All rolled into one awesome series !!

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor convinced ? gif

This is the fifth book in the series, and if you thought she would take it easier on her readers, because it's the last novel....you were wrong !!! Boy does she love fucking with her readers https://www.google.com/search?q=emoticons  They still love her anyways though https://www.google.com/search?q=emoticons

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor readers tears

I don't want to go into the storyline of this one too much though, because that would spoiler it for those who are anxiously waiting to read this one. I am definitely of the opinion that these books should be read spoilerfree. So you are not getting much more from me...

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor so sorry not sorry gif

I am sad to say goodbye to this series, and I am gonna miss Jamie and Kyle & Alexei & Sean and all the other wonderful members of the team. And I hope/know there might still be some novella's on the way....maybe... I am also very excited to see what Hailey has in store for us next. I know she is planning on doing something completely different, but I don't mind begging her to at least consider writing Liam's story in the future !!

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor begging gif

(I know she won't be able to resist those big cat eyes)

I highly recommend this series for those who love some action in their romance...or some romance in their action :P

It took me awhile to read this. Not because it wasn’t the utterly riveting and scorching thrill ride that I expect from Hailey Turner’s Metahuman Files series. It was all that, and more. But because life has been busy lately, and instead of reading in my spare time, I’ve been watching A LOT of basketball....

It is canon that Alpha Team likes basketball (or, at the very least, fills out playoff brackets). Hence my fangirling is completely justified. GO CAVS!

When I finished In the Requiem, I felt sad. Look, I KNOW that it makes sense to end a series on a high note. Turner ended it on a high note. But it doesn’t mean that I’m not sad that it is over, or that I won’t miss these guys and gals.

Here the members of Alpha Team comes face-to-face with the series’ Big Bads - and the consequences of their own choices. Turner deftly balances the jaw-clenching and heart-wrenching suspense with softer and sweeter moments showcasing the friendship and the loyalty between the team members as well as the love and the passion between Jamie and Kyle and Alexei and Sean.

The story, like the series, is all about the action. Military maneuvers and political intrigue and anarchist plots remain prominent elements. But it felt like Turner gave the couples more quality time together, and it paid off. Whereas Alexei and Sean were the previous passengers on the angst train, Jamie and Kyle take a ride here. Yet Kyle's unwavering trust and understanding is the perfect salve to Jamie's guilt and frustration. His submission to Jamie still makes for erotic and moving moments.

The world presented here is still absorbing, a foreign yet entirely foreseeable Earth ravaged by climate change, relying on synthetic wood and engineered food and constant air conditioning in a permanent summer. It is still compelling and repellent.

Alexei and Sean are still my favorites.

I still want a story for Katie and Matthew. She is so strong for everyone and I want to see someone be strong for her.

I'm still sad that the series is ending, but I'm comforted that there will be more novellas.

While the first installment of the series drew me in, I wasn't all in until the third. I would encourage other readers who may feel similarly to have patience. You are rewarded, and well. A for effort, A for execution, A for Alpha Team!

3 stars for the whole series and 3 stars for this last instalment. Not a standalone : this is a continuing series and this is the final act for this Metahuman military team in saving this futuristic world against an evil terrorist.

It’s fast paced, full of action and with both the main couples, ie Jamie & Kyle and Alexei & Sean (my favorites : book 3 “In the Shadows” was mostly focused on them, and oh boy, I got such a rush with that book). I did have a great time with them as couples : they are HOT.
But not enough for me to overlook all the action scenes (I admit : I skipped pages after a while), the inconsistencies of the plot that started in book2 and had been going on since then, and the ending…so rushed : tying up loose ends would have been nice instead of having to go through a supposed “twist” that everyone could see coming from miles away.

Mixed review. As mentioned, it’s well-written, the world-building interested me a lot and the main characters are VERY sexy, each in their own way : so much that I kept reading the whole series. But it would have worked better for me if the efforts had been less focused on the action and more on the plot.

Note : please, dear authors, using some writing in a foreign language doesn't really add anything. But if you do it, either make sure to write as properly as you would do in your native language or don't use a foreign language at all : it becomes very distracting when errors keep popping up.

Hailey Turner knows how to write a gripping, action-packed story, there’s no doubt about that.

This fifth instalment of the futuristic, military-themed, Metahuman series, finally sees the larger series arc come to a close. Battles are fought, bad guys are epically defeated, and the heroes prevail… but, good lord, did we—the collective “we” of readers and characters—all go through the freakin’ emotional wringer before all was said and done.

Some of the story choices in this instalment were interesting, to say the least. There were a few twists and turns; a few moments where the readers were purposefully—and somewhat cruelly—left in the dark over big matters, which, of course, built the suspense and held me captive, but also prolonged the state of stress I found myself in, which, again, felt somewhat cruel. The fact my heart was this invested though, speaks to the quality of the storytelling to the degree that I was able to overlook any (brief) feelings of ill will I felt over my book-induced emotional trauma.

As always, I love the way Turner orchestrates her action-sequences. It’s all high-intensity and visually vivid in its affect. I can see the scenes play out in my minds-eye so clearly, and that’s a skill worth commending, because even some of the biggest books of all time have left me confused when attempting big action sequences.

Where the romances are concerned, I still fall solidly on the side of the fence that favours all things Alexei and Sean. These two own my heart and it has been my absolute pleasure reading this series, if for no other reason than to watch these two complex and engaging men fall so deeply in love.

On the other side of that fence is Jamie and Kyle, who, as the original leads of this series, still demand and hold my respect, even though their particular dynamic (especially in the bedroom) has never appealed to me quite like the pull of the aforementioned couple. However, what Jaime and Kyle went through in this particular book was BIG and PAINFUL and RIVETING. I was stressed to the gills for their very lives at one point, but I knew to trust in the author enough that the hurt would always be followed by all the HAPPINESS and LOVE I could take… making any of the previously mentioned “cruel” moments worth every minute.

Needless to say, my heart was in my throat for a large majority of the second half of this book, but I was personally really pleased with how this story managed to tie-up loose ends, both personally and professionally for these characters, in a way that left me deeply satisfied.

Although the bigger arc now seems to be wrapped up and HEA’s are in full-effect for all the members of Alpha Team, I’m glad to know that there are still a few more stories left yet in this series!

All the stars - see them, all of them and then some. I want to give this book more than just the five stars here because it couldn't have been a more perfect ending to this series if it tried.

description

Any book which gives me both a hot flush (and oh boy, the encounters in this one are especially volcanic) and can turn me into an emotionally wrecked, limp as a tea towel pathetic mess, almost sobbing while raging at the author at the same time, is more than a win in my book.

Stories, and series' like this one, are why I read. They take me out of the everyday mundane normality into a world where it's completely believable that a member of the British Royal Family could be a secret metahuman ex-SAS operative, where people can not only fly, but where they can phase themselves out of synch with their surroundings and be practically invulnerable.

They're believable not only because of the incredible level of world building and scene setting which has gone into them, but because I want it to be real - minus the evul Russian bravtva and unhinged terrorist groups that is! I want there to be a team of superhumans all supporting themselves, their friends and their country.

You won't find any plot details or spoilers in this review, In the Requiem requires complete story ignorance and even then, it's still an adrenaline filled ride which answers all the questions I had left for Alpha Team, their families and friends.

Except for one. Hailey please tell me we're going to get Liam Wessex's full story at some point :)

Holy shit! I have put off this last book because after bingeing on the rest of the series, I needed a break from the nonstop action. You keep wondering if these guys will ever catch a break and the bad guys brought to justice. There's a reason why I don't watch action movies. My poor heart can't take it.

At one point, I was literally sobbing. Like after all of this, this is how it's going to end? But fear not, things take a turn for the better and each couple gets the HEA they deserve even as it is well fought for. I'm sad to see it end. It's truly been an experience.

I love Turner's writing. It has a way of drawing you in immediately and not letting go until every emotion is wrung from you. I will definitely be reading more of her work.

I just wish the author would just stop being so redundant in every book. *sigh* It's a series not a standalone so I don't know why there are so many repeated explanations about previous situations, relationships, missions, etc. Needless to say, I skipped so many pages, half of the book was just explanations about what happened in the previous books. Meh. Thank god for Alexei and Sean though. I'd love to read another book focused on their relationship. 💕

This is definitely a worthy end to a fabulous series.
What I loved:

.) Different POV from Jamie, Kyle, Alexei and Sean. It really hit the spot and is very well done.

.) The balance between romance and action is just right. It was sheer joy to see how the relationship between the men developed and matured.

.) Both couples are highly enjoyable to read. However when it comes to heat - Jamie and Kyle are tops. Hailey Turner writes some of the best sex scenes in the genre.

.) The action part was 'simpler' all in all. Yes, there is a lot of jargon but it couldn't be any other way, these guys are a special unit with a military background after all, but I didn't feel overpowered by it at any time.

.) We do get a better explanation why Alexei's English is so rudimentary. (Still totally have a soft spot for that guy and his accent btw)

.) The ending is simply perfect. The author gives us a very satisfying, long 'epilogue' (it is not called that, but it happens after the main events and deals with lots of little open questions.)
Only thing I'd like to know: whether Richard eventually did get the presidency.

I know the day will come when I'll want to read this series back to back in one go. If you haven't tried it yet - treat yourself!

05/23/2023 reread

10/9/2022 reread

9/3/2021 reread. So nerve-wracking and intense! Made me tear up in the end. Good ending for the Alpha Team.

This was by far the most nerve-wracking but in a good way book of the series. It was thrilling, passionate and magnificent! I loved it. In the beginning I was sad that it would be over but by the time I finished it I could say with assurance that any more books with this characters as MCs would have been overkill. It ended so well and tied up all the loose ends and left nothing unresolved.

Both couples went through tough time and came out stronger and even more in love than before. I loved how Sean turned out - so self-confident but not in that nasty cocky way but in a way that makes you feel that he has your six. Alexei really didn't change that much through the series - it was the quiet moments with Sean that made me like him more. Jamie is an excellent captain and even better friend and lover and the choice he has to make here is not for faint-hearted. It made me respect the heck out of him. So much strength and bravery in times of adversity just proved how worthy he is. Kyle is the light of Jamie's life and in the end he gives him the absolution he so craves and it all turns out beautifully for them all.

I will always think fondly about my metahumans and I am sure I will revisit them again. I just wish for Liam's story because I think he too deserves his happy ever after. Wonderful series! I highly recommend it! I would tip my hat if I wore any but Ms Turner is a master writer! Bravo!

This wasn’t my favorite installment, because when it comes to main characters Jaime and Kyle, they’re just not as compelling for me. Now granted, they have a good love story, they are obviously more together than apart, and they complete each other in and outside the bedroom. However, D/s will never be my cuppa, and they don’t just put a toe in the water, but their entire bodies are well and truly submerged, and that’s totally fine. It’s simply a dynamic that never titillates much at all personally.

Regardless, I can’t fault Turner for her storytelling. When action, suspense, fight scenes, and military tactics are needed, she brings it head on and feeds your imagination as a fully realized cinematic movie on page. Despite personal quibbles, there's plenty of found family (high five to kick ass Katie), life threatening situations, and bad guys dying deserved deaths (albeit too quickly to truly satisfy my blood thirsty self).

The main story arc is concluded here, and I look forward to visiting some other cast members in the remaining few books left in this very well thought out alternate future dystopic universe. A shout out to Sean and Alexei! Props to you, your trials, and the love you clung to to get you through all your heart stopping ordeals. I’ve only got mad respect.

4 Stars for the Narrator

3.75 to 4 I'm somewhere in the middle stars for the story.
I loved how action packed it was.
I love the progress of the relationships. I even liked Jamie in this one. *GASP*
The comradery of the team is still one of my favorite parts of these books.
Katie is just straight up bad a**. I would so read a novella about her.
I wish spoilers for this book were not every where including the authors FB group but it has been out a few years so I can't really complain too much🤷🏽‍♀️ Needless to say I knew what was going to happen to Kyle and
I'm glad everything was wrapped up. Would have loved to had more detail of the Senate hearings after the truth was revealed.
I still think some of the sex scenes are way too long. I am not prude but when I'm listening to one that is 20 minutes plus, no matter how good the narrator is, it just because meh to me. I skipped the last one in this one 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Overall I do like the series. The metahuman aspect is my favorite part. Wish each character received their own little novella so I could learn more about them and their powers. I will be listening to Trevor's and I look forward to that.

I'm crying happy and sad tears after finishing this.

Damn, Turner really puts us through the wringer in this. It's the last book in this series, or at least last full length novel, and Turner does not pull any punches.

She gives us the happy times, the sexy times, the tense times, the utterly heartbreaking times, and the action packed times. She gives us it all.

This continues a few months after Sean and Alexei's short story, Out of the Ashes left off, and for this we go back to alternating POV's of Jamie, Kyle, Sean and Alexei. And this story is one where all our fave characters go through the ringer, but while In the Blood put Alexei and Sean through the wringer the most, Jamie and Kyle go through the wringer in this one.

Not to worry though, it does work out, because I don't know what I'd do if I didn't get my happy for now's and happy endings. I'd freak. But that doesn't make the lead up to the HEA easy in the least.

Stanislav is planning to put his master plan to fruition in this book, and it all comes to one crazy, wild head that I did NOT see coming and you guys won't see coming. It's crazy, it's tear inducing, maybe even rage inducing, but it is WORTH it, SO worth it.

Because this was the culmination of the story for the past 4 books and lingering questions and storylines I've been wondering how Turner would fix or close up is answered in this book, and how Alpha Team and our two couples make it through and how they get to that ultimate happy ending.

Since Sean and Alexei already went through hell and made it through to the other side, they're mostly good in this, in a solid, happy place and I LOVED their scenes together. They're so perfect for each other.

Jamie and Kyle were of course solid and happy too, they just had shit happen to them that was nOT FAIR. But again, it all works out.

Also, yES, what Simone was talking about in her review and her first update about a "special guest" is nothing to worry about, it was actually SUPER hot. Like DAMn, Jamie and Kyle are always SO hot in their sex scenes together. DAMN. You guys will love it, no doubt. I know I did. Whew *fansself*

This book was just...YES. SO GOOD. It had all the action and adventure of the all the previous books that I have loved so much, it had the romance that I adore, the sex that is always smoKING hot with this author, especially between Jamie and Kyle, and while you'll probably sob (as I totally did!) at one point, we come to a satisfactory conclusion that will make you giddy. Or well, at least happy. It made me incredibly happy - and also sad that we're done with this wonderful, amazing series.

Hopefully we either get short stories of or just of our fave couples after the series or a spin off series with Liam over in England. He deserves his own great love story mhmm. Or both, I'd love both ;)

But just know that this was superb, amazing, and definitely worth your time and energy to read. Two massive thumbs up from me. BEAUTIFUL ending <3

**** Earth: 2286 **** This is a roaring, action packed, and a whopping sexual tale from our delicious Metahuman Defense Forces we have loved.
We see them maneuver through a Senate inquiry, the invasion of a Chateau on the Seine, (including an exploding yacht), and later a massive attack on Washington D.C..

I like the tough hard core Marine Sniper, Kyle, "Reaper," who is Marine Commander Jamie "Apollo"
Callahan's sub/partner. Jamie is a strong, deeply devoted man, to his partner, family and country.

In their BDSM relationship, Jamie gives Kyle what he needs to escape the control he maintains as a Sniper. Both men reap the benefits of their super sexy times. Alexei "Inferno" and Sean "Wraith" are also hot, intense and sizzling wild in their bedroom. We get to see their tender moments, engagement, and also the fierceness in battle.

In combat, the whole Metahuman team are ruthless, efficient, and deadly. I have loved all of the super powers these men and women posses, and the terrific code names. Lots of action in battle, with awesome weaponry, scrambling jets, gun fights, flames,

phasing through walls, telepathy, self healing, espionage, planning and more. We see wonderful larger-than-life characters, in this Sci-Fi world in the future.

There are some bad guys who are killed, caught and dealt with, and some wrongs righted.
The writing is first class, with vivid descriptions of military uniforms, battle gear, and the dress uniforms, also.

The Presnenskaya Bratva, Stanislav, Declan, the Sons of Adam, and more terrorists have a well planned massive attack on D.C., where Kyle is kidnapped and used to make Jamie bend to their demands.

Once again we see Katie "Viper," Matthew, Donovan "Tank," Rapier and Blaze from a Beta Team, Trevor "Bones," Prince Liam is SAS "Knight," pilot Annabelle "Icarus" and all fight side-by-side.

There is a magnificently written surprise at the ending, and we are enthralled by the whole story, and of course the series, which has been amazing.

There will probably be a spin-off series from this one. I look forward to it !
There is a glossary of terms and names in the back end, so you can look up information.

* I recommend this story and the series, because it's so well done.
ENJOY !

I was an emotional wreck but holy fck is Hailey Turner talented.

This series became a surprising favorite of mine and I cannot wait to fully re-read it one day, not including all the times I've re-read my favorite parts ;) Recommend this a thousand times over.

I've given this an A+ for narration and an A- for content at AudioGals - for some reason I forgot to post this review when it originally appeared back in February 2020.

Oh. My. God. Hailey Turner pulls out all the stops in this, the final** instalment of her military/futuristic Metahumans Files series, bringing the overarching storyline to a thrilling, high-stakes close… but not without leaving a couple of unanswered questions that leave the door ajar for future stories. And it will come as no surprise when I say that Greg Boudreaux – who has done some truly incredible work throughout the series – makes it five for five with a barnstorming performance that had me smiling, sighing, blushing, fuming and sobbing into my dinner.

Besides being the culmination of a plot arc, In the Requiem also features a large number of recurring secondary characters, and while the author does include some backstory and background information about both plot and characters, I don’t think this story will make a great deal of sense if you haven’t read or listened to the books that precede it. I’m assuming that anyone who has made it to this point knows the story so far…

**At time of writing this was the final book, but book six has just been announced.

What a fitting end to an awesome series!

The story took me from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, and still managed to give our characters solid HEAs.

I'll write a more thorough review when I can but if you are on the fence about reading this, just do it! You will NOT regret it!!!

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

This is the fifth, and final, book in the Metahuman Files series and I’ll admit I was both incredibly eager to read it and worried at the same time. A final book needs to be so many things, and while I had confidence in Turner’s ability, that didn’t stop me from being a touch…apprehensive.

But I needn’t have worried. Once again, the world building is outstanding in this novel. New things come into play and fit so seamlessly with the world the author has created. World building is, to the surprise of no one, a sticking point for me. But this futuristic society is spot on and in depth. It gives a richness to the book that I can’t even put into words and really gives a solidness to the story. When I’m reading this series, I actually can believe this world exists.

Wow! I am going to miss this series and it will be one that I definitely re-read. I don't want to say too much about this book because it's one you want to be surprised while reading. Also this is a series you need to read in order so if you haven't started what are you waiting for? Start - but start with book 1 - In The Wreckage.

This book had everything I love in a book - Fantastic characters you are rooting for, tons of action, a villain you love to hate, a plot that keeps you guessing because you just can't see how the villain will be stopped. It made me cry, laugh and cheer. It was a perfect balance between Jamie/Kyle and Sean/Alexei with tons of hot sex but that were completely different between the two couples. It had a team I loved with strong friendships, family issues and just the right amount of angst.

One of my all time favorite series!

I don't think I can add anything to the reviews previously written.

Hailey Turner's mind is a thing of beauty.
This book was BRUTAL. I cried so much towards the end because #reasons.

I mean I knew it was gonna work out and it had an HEA, but the road to that HEA was slippery.

- Jamie... you broke my heart with your pain.

- Kyle... your strength astounds me.

- Alexei... just continue being you because you're the best. You're probably my favorite.

- Sean...you're a pillar of strength and I love you for it.

- Katie... YOU KICKED A$$. I love how Hailey writes powerful women in her series .

- Liam...You rock and I can't wait to read your book.

And the audio... *chef's kiss* from Mr . Greg Boudreaux. Total eargasm.

PERFECTION. This whole series is just PERFECTION!

It has everything. Action, Love. Friendship. More Love. More Action. SUPERHEROES..
The writing is flawless from start to finish... I honestly can't find something I didn't love here.

The characters are HIGHLY lovable. All of them. Even the secondary ones.
The 2 couples that we follow.
First Jamie and Kyle. A bit of a D/Sub relationship here but not so much as I am not a big fan of that and I adored these 2. VERY HOT!! Very intense.
And Alexei and Sean. So sweet and adorable. Both of them. Just as much intense and hot.
I loved the friendship/brotherhood of Alexei and Kyle.

Well ok. I LOVED everything so there's that!!

Nice finale to this series by Hailey! I loved re-visiting these characters and seeing them get their HEA. The entire series was a fun ride and I loved going along with them.

Five and a half books later, and I'm not gonna lie: I can't keep the characters' code names straight, and I can't remember who seldom-mentioned side characters are (think Kyle and Alexei's family, as well as other metahumans we see little of but who randomly pop up once in a while). In this way I sometimes found it confusing to follow along because I just didn't know who anyone was. And there were some characters I could've done without (see Phaedra: her character could've been cut entirely).

I also found the multiple baddies and storylines hard to keep up with. Stanislav, Bennett, Declan...I know I'm forgetting some. Seriously, five and a half books later and I don't actually know how they all wove together lol. BUT! I loved these books anyway, so it's a testament to Hailey's writing that I kept reading and wanting to know more, despite not always being able to follow the plot :)

Again, like Hailey's previous books, I found it overly wordy and descriptive, and there was a lot that could've been cut to tighten the story and keep me even more on the edge of my seat. I was often told a lot of info instead of shown. It took me five and a half books but I finally nailed down what kept pulling me out of these stories: I'm in the middle of reading scene, all invested in what's happening, and then all of a sudden I'm pulled out to be told some background information that a) doesn't move the story along, and b) isn't necessary for the reader to know. The biggest example I can think of is when Katie, Sean, and Annabelle (I think?) are in a plane and there's action going on with some other stealth airplanes, and I'm all riveted and reading as fast as I can...and then I'm pulled out of the story to be told some stuff about stealth technology that has no bearing on the story. It's things like this that kept pulling me out and and I had to go back and re-read a lot of paragraphs.

Anyway, that being said, this series is fun, it's entertaining, it's gripping. It made me cry, it made me laugh, it made me angry. I do feel that there are still some unanswered questions, but all in all I really enjoyed this series finale. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Thank you, Hailey, for the adventure!

IN THE REQUIEM was so intense and emotional *sucks back tears*. I honestly don't know how to write a review for this one because it would just give so much away. I will say that I'm so happy for Sean and Alexei and Jamie and Kyle. Their road has been rough and hard and filled with so much pain and hardship but they've stood by their love and their team and they deserve all the happiness in the world. I'm going to be really sad when I finish this series because these characters have become a part of me and I'll always love them.

Content Warning: grief, violence

*4.5 stars*

I've loved this series. The different POV's worked for me perfectly in this installment. Loved Jamie's chosen family. They were all great characters. Kyle scared the living daylight out of me. Loved all the special abilities these Metahumans had. Expecially Sean's phasing. How cool is that???

It was just great.

I’m assuming that anyone who has made it to this point knows the story so far…

For over a year, Captain Jamie Callahan and members of Alpha Team have been working to track down and eliminate whoever is manufacturing Splice (a deadly chemical weapon) and selling it on the black market. Jamie and his team are now sure they know who is behind it all – Stanislav Pavluhkin, a wealthy and powerful member of the Russian Bratva and a metahuman with precognitive powers. Jamie’s association with Pavluhkin as part of an undercover mission has come to light, and his supposed near-criminal actions have seriously tarnished his reputation; in addition, his father’s presidential campaign has been all but destroyed by the terrorist attack in Boston and Richard is desperately attempting to do some damage control – but it’s going to take little short of a miracle to return him to his position as front-runner. He’s still demanding that Jamie spend time with him on the campaign trail so the family can present a united front, but Jamie is finding it harder and harder to remain separated from his team and, most importantly, from the man he loves. He’s been torn between dedication to his job, his lover and his family for more than a year, and the strain is showing; it’s time to make a move against Pavluhkin and bring him down once and for all – but how does one outmanoeuvre someone who can see all possible futures?

The story has been building inexorably towards this point since the first book, becoming more complex and compelling with every instalment. Hailey Turner is, as I’ve said elsewhere, a master-plotter, and she pulls together all the different threads of her story incredibly well, blending together a perfectly balanced mixture of political intrigue, fast-paced action, enduring friendships and steamy romance. Each book has been a satisfying story in itself while also contributing to the bigger picture, and she does her characters – and readers – proud here. There’s an atmosphere of real foreboding overshadowing this book, a sense that it’s now or never for Alpha Team – the stakes are higher than ever before and everything comes down to one shocking, gut-wrenching moment in which Jamie is forced to make an impossible choice.

The worldbuilding in this series is excellent, presenting the Earth of the future as a place in which climate change has seriously impacted the world’s geography and food sources (coffee is as expensive as gold, or perhaps moreso!), the author’s vivid, detailed scene-setting making it easy for me to believe people can fly, walk through walls, command fire and all the other super-duper powers possessed by our heroes. I love the camaraderie she’s created between the members of Alpha Team; there’s a sense of such deep and genuine affection between them that you know they’d walk through fire for each other, and when it comes to working in the field, they’re like a well-oiled machine. Their ‘family’ has now extended to include Matthew Gailiani, a captain in the Recon Marines and Alexei and Kyle’s former boss, and I was delighted with the reappearance of Liam Wessex, a former SAS officer and member of the royal family (thirteenth in line to the throne, we’re told!) who is a very old friend of Jamie’s; it was fitting that he had a role to play in the final showdown and I live in hope that Ms. Turner may one day write a story for him.

Her ability to write action scenes that are incredibly visual never ceases to impress me – I’ve said before that they play out like mini-action movies in my head – and I’ve also been impressed by the way she’s juggled two romantic relationships in the last couple of books without favouring one pairing over the other. In the Requiem is told from four points of view – Jamie’s, Kyle’s, Alexei’s and Sean’s – and each has a distinctive voice; Sean and Alexei went through the wringer in the last book (and so did I!) but have emerged from their ordeal in In the Blood stronger and more deeply in love than ever (the novella Out of the Ashes focuses on their recovery) while in this book it’s Jamie and Kyle who have to face their worst fears… and all I’m going to say about that is that Hailey Turner Is Eeeevil.

I don’t know what else I can say about Greg Boudreaux as a narrator that I haven’t already said. His work on this series has been outstanding – a real tour-de-force that I think very few narrators could match. (Plus – extra Brownie Points for Liam’s posh English accent). For one thing, he has created and consistently maintained a large number of character voices, male and female, throughout the series, making it easy for the listener to identify the members of Alpha Team, those at MDF HQ, Jamie’s and Sean’s families and the various bad guys who have passed through the pages. And for another, he doesn’t stint on anything when it comes to the emotional side of the story, be it happy or sad, passion or pain. The emotional connection he forges with the characters communicates itself to the listener so that we feel along with them (I suspect that if he was a metahuman, his super-power would be reducing-Caz-to-a-blubbering-mess-in-the-corner), his vivid, intense performance a perfect match for the vivid intensity of the story.

I’m sorry to see the series come to an end**, but it’s been a fantastic journey and while there are, as I said at the beginning, a couple of loose ends still to be tied up, In the Requiem ends on a high note, with all the major players in a good place and looking to the future. There are a few novellas to enjoy (which I’m informed will make it into audio at some point) and I certainly wouldn’t be averse to more stories set in this world. Huge thanks go to Hailey Turner for sharing her wonderful creations with us and to Greg Boudreaux for realising them so perfectly. The Metahuman Files is a truly enthralling series and one I’ll definitely be revisiting often.

Series: Metahuman Files #5
Rating: 5 stars - I loved it!

Well this book took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride!

Jamie Callahan and his family's reputation is continuing to take hits after the events in the previous book. While everything is falling apart the team knows that another attack by the terrorists is bound to happen soon. This was an action packed book from the very beginning. The team is dealing with Congress investigating them, tracking terrorists, and keeping each other safe.

Like the previous book, this one jumps between Jamie and Kyle and Sean and Alexei. Jamie and Kyle are still hiding their relationship and you can see the strain it has had on both of them. Their relationship is put to the test in this one. Jamie had to make a terrible decision in this one and it was a very emotional time for a little bit.

Sean and Alexei are finally healing from the trauma of their torture. We see their relationship is almost back to where it was in the beginning. They continue to work well as a team. He has become a valuable member of the team. I loved seeing these two work together and become a stronger couple.

This book is a turning point for the war against the terrorist. They make a huge play and Alpha Team steps up to stop them. It was action packed, emotional, and the fallout will last a long time. Overall this was a very emotional book for both couples. I am very interested in seeing what will happen next with the team and the mission.

Trigger Warnings: grief, violence
