Cycle of Evil #2

Hearing Evil

Rate this book
Michael Turcotte wants nothing to do with his so-called gift—the ability to see other people’s fates simply by touching them. Michael decides to spend his summer searching for answers about his past. He can’t rest without the sounds of forgotten tragedy echoing through his dreams, but reconstructing his memories will come with a whole new set of problems even he can’t foresee.

Detective Samantha Reilly has always looked out for Michael, but now that she’s taken him into her home, she fears her maternal instincts are lacking. When a brutal gang sets off a chain reaction of crimes, Sam struggles to choose between the two most important things in her life: her job and her new foster son. Fate intervenes when Michael is kidnapped, forcing her two roles to collide.

As Michael’s past meets Sam’s present, their bond will be tested while a city crumbles around them. They’ll need all their skills and a lot of luck in order to survive.

In his head, Jason Parent lives in many places, but in the real world, he calls New England his home. The region offers an abundance of settings for his writing and many wonderful places in which to write them. He currently resides in Southeastern Massachusetts with his cuddly corgi named Calypso.

In a prior life, Jason spent most of his time in front of a judge . . . as a civil litigator. When he finally tired of Latin phrases no one knew how to pronounce and explaining to people that real lawsuits are not started, tried and finalized within the 60-minute timeframe they see on TV (it's harassing the witness; no one throws vicious woodland creatures at them), he traded in his cheap suits for flip flops and designer stubble. The flops got repossessed the next day, and he's back in the legal field . . . sorta. But that's another story.

When he's not working, Jason likes to kayak, catch a movie, travel any place that will let him enter, and play just about any sport (except that ball tied to the pole thing where you basically just whack the ball until it twists into a knot or takes somebody's head off - he misses the appeal). And read and write, of course. He does that too sometimes.

Taunt Thriller!

Small backstory:

Michael Turcotte is back along with Detective Samantha Reilly who has become Michael's caretaker in this installment. Michael has more to deal with in this story as his old school chum that killed a boy bully in the last book has resurfaced in this story with a whole new set of problems.

There is a gang that has taken over the streets and they have zoned in on Michael as they find out what he is capable of and want to use him for their own means, but Detective Reilly will have to do all she can to keep anything from happening to Michael!

That is about all I can give on a small backstory so if you want to know more then go read this series!

Thoughts:

This book just stayed with the pace of the first book and kept the suspense/intense thrills wrapped tight within this story as well.

I love the crime detective concept tightly bound together with the supernatural as it is so easy to fall right into the storyline and the smooth writing style of the author just keeps me entranced with all what is happening within the storyline. Looking forward to wrapping up the trilogy and see what will happen in the last book. Giving this book five "Intense Suspense" stars!

Detective Samantha Reilly has always looked after Michael, ever since his parents were killed in one of her crime scenes. Michael is not your normal, everyday teenager. He has a gift of seeing someone's future just by touch. He considers it more of a curse and wears gloves so as to not touch anyone.

However, his visions are changing. Now when he's in the middle of a vision, he can also hear ... and what he hears is scaring him.

His dreams and visions take him back to the tender age of 3, when he lost his parents. He wants to know all the details .. the things Samantha has kept from him.

But when Michael is kidnapped by someone from his recent past, his visions turn deadly. But someone else is watching him, whispering to him, and they want to keep him for their own nefarious reasons.

This is an excellent follow-up to SEEING EVIL. Samantha and Michael are solid characters, made believable by this author's writing ability. Samantha wants to be Michael's mom, but her job is constantly in her way. She's put in a position of maybe having to give up one or the other. Michael is level-headed ... most of the time.

Throw a vicious gang of thugs in the mix and this becomes a fast-paced, action packed suspense.

This one can be read as a stand-alone, but reading SEEING EVIL first will answer a lot of questions about Michael that are touched on in this book. Always better to start at the beginning.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this crime fiction suspense. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

4.5 stars! (Cycle of Evil: Book 2)

HEARING EVIL is Book 2 in the Cycle of Evil series by Jason Parent.  Michael Turcotte is now trying to get on with his life, attempting to avoid the supernatural visions of the future that have plagued him in the past.  Currently residing with his guardian, Detective Samantha Reilly, all he wants is to be . . . ordinary . . . like any other boy his age.

Unfortunately, that appears to be too much for Michael to hope for.

". . . The visions were happening again . . . "

When I began reading this book, I was immediately swept back into the characters' lives, picking up where they had left off in SEEING EVIL  Parent stays true to the characters he's developed, with decisions that are consistent with what his readers have come to "expect" from them.

". . . People suck . . . As often as he told himself that, it didn't change the fact that he did care."

The atmosphere is charged with tension, uncertainty, and hostility right from the very beginning.  As Detective Reilly often sees the "worst the city has to offer" this should come as no surprise to those that have read the preceding novel.  Parent brings back some previous characters, as well as presenting us with some all new ones.

". . . pain was only temporary, but shame and cowardice were long-lasting and hurt far worse . . . "

As refreshing as it is to return to the known characters, these new inclusions have personalities and traits that I was instantly drawn to.

". . . Let him be better than us."

In fact, I found these individual sub-plots to be just as captivating as the main one.  Seeing the way that these divergent branches eventually meet up or crossed paths was every bit as exciting as the more . . . intrinsic . . . matters facing Michael.

" . . . He was just sort of empty . . . "

The action scenes were complete with intellectual strength, emotional impact, and adrenaline-fueled excitement.  These never felt "forced" or as random scenes thrown in to fulfill a word count, but rather each and every page was necessary in order to further the plot.

". . . perfection is unobtainable.  Utopia is a lie.  Human nature is constant, and it is ugly."

Of the new additions in this book, one in particular is most . . . unique.  I found myself anxiously awaiting these particular scenes, as each new bit of information gleaned helped to further flesh out the person's role, abilities, and intentions.

". . . There are no boogeymen in black hoodies haunting me . . . "

Add to this already fast-paced novel Michael searching for answers to his past, as well as questions about his future, and you have a book that you simply won't want to put down.  Every new revelation will leave you anticipating the next even more.

". . . Sometimes, the ends justify the means . . . "

Overall, a great book that crosses over into the thriller, crime, police-procedural, and supernatural genres.  Each scene and character felt necessary to advancing the story--sometimes in more than one direction.  The characters that we already "know" stay true to themselves, and their growth and adaption seems a natural process, rather than one forced upon them.

". . . He didn't want to be killed.  It sounded painful . . . "

Highly recommended, to be read following SEEING EVIL (Cycle of Evil:  Book 1).

Freaking me out from the getgo. Jason Parent has that ability and uses it well in Hearing Evil, Book 2 of the Cycle of Evil series. I love getting a glimpse inside Jason Parent’s head.

If I hadn’t already been claustrophobic, I would be now.

Because Hearing Evil is Book 2 it makes it harder to write a review without giving away too much for those of you who want to read Book I, Seeing Evil, which I highly recommend reading before moving on to this one.

Michael is one of the unfortunates. Life has dealt him a bad hand. His gift keeps him apart, alone, except for Sam. He has the ability to see people’s future with a simple touch.

His vision foretold the future, but his nightmare may be trying to tell him something else.

Back and forth, from Michael to Sam – it keeps the suspense simmering on a slow boil.

So intense. I fear for Sam and Michael, an unlikely family. Can they save each other? Evil, so much evil. If you like your stories a bit on the paranormal side with a mix of the human filth drug up from the bottom of a pond or crawling out from under a rock, white knuckled reading that leaves you asking why them, what have they done to deserve this, then Hearing Evil is for you.

I love to open my mind as I open a book and let the author take me to a place I have never been. Jason Parent makes that so easy for me.

WOW. Just WOW. I love that I could not figure out what twisted, scary path Jason was taking me down. So much action. A woman cop and a child psychic…can they heal each other?

I was traveling when I read this, but took notes whenever I had the chance. I wanted you to know how much I loved it and every chance I got I picked it up again. But, maybe, because I was traveling, it didn’t grab me as much as the first book, Seeing Evil. If you feel the need to have a good scare, I highly recommend it.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Hearing Evil by Jason Parent.

After the tumultuous events of Seeing Evil (haven’t read it? You need to!) Michael and Sam have earned a little quiet time. But, sadly, peace and quiet aren’t on their horizon.

Plagued by new nightmares, Michael seems to be withdrawing further into himself and Sam, despite bringing Michael into her home, can’t seem to cross that mother-figure bridge and pull him out. When “The Whisperer” starts to enter Michael’s dreams and visions things take a frightening turn. Michael’s past is coming back to haunt him. Literally. Meanwhile Sam’s work lands her smack-dab in the middle of a frightening gang’s bomb-riddled hostage-taking jailbreak. Can I just point out what a bad@$$, determined woman Sam is? She’s my idol!

Hearing Evil was quite the roller coaster ride. Did I like it as much as Book 1? Just about. It was really close! And will I be anxious to read the next installment? You betcha! Jason Parent has created two very likable characters I’ve become quite invested in. Bring on more Evil.

Book source ~ ARC. My review is voluntary and honest.

Fifteen-year-old Michael Turcotte lives in Fall River, Massachusetts with his guardian Detective Samantha Reilly. When Michael was three his parents were involved in a murder-suicide and Sam had been keeping an eye on Michael all through the foster care system. After the events in Seeing Evil, Sam becomes his guardian, but they are having difficulty finding a comfortable even ground. When Michael is kidnapped Sam breaks out all the stops to find him and figure out if they want to use him for his special ability – seeing people’s fates by touching them – or for some other reason. All Michael wants is for the curse to stop. In the meantime, the past is coming back to haunt them, but they have no idea why.

Man, oh, man! How to write this review without spoilers is quite the challenge. So, I won’t. If you have not read Seeing Evil, then you really should in order to have a richer experience reading this one. Michael and Sam’s story continues and while there are bad guys doing bad things in the city, what is really interesting is what’s going on with Michael, his nightmares, and how his past is tying into his present. Seriously, this is impossible to write. I’ll just say, read it! But read book 1 first. Trust me on this.

Review: HEARING EVIL by Jason Parent
(Cycle of Evil Book 2)

Michael Turcotte is one of the Gifted who experiences future visions, at the cost of seizures each time. To prevent the visions, he wears gloves and scrupulously avoids touch. In the foster care system since the tragic deaths of his parents when he was only 3, at fifteen Michael is now in the care of his guardian angel, the detective who investigated his parents' case. She knows about Michael's gift, but unfortunately so do some vicious villains with megalomania and their own plans to "change the world ." Unfortunately, this gang has rivals in the "build a Utopia" sweeps, rivals who have been manipulating and planning for decades. It's definitely a "out of the frying, into the bonfire" situation for poor Michael, who never asked for any of this.

Hearing Evil, book 2 in the Cycle of Evil series, is a fantastic follow up to Seeing Evil. Jason Parent books are always fun but this series keeps me glued to the pages. Sam and Michael feel like real people, people who you’ve come to know and care about. Sam has become Michael’s guardian and my heart broke for both of them as they struggle to define the place they hold both in each other’s lives and hearts. To complicate matters, Michael is struggling to live with his psychic abilities, and just wanting to be like everyone else. When he meets someone who offers answers he jumps at the chance, landing in more danger than he realizes. Sam must fight to stop a ruthless gang of prisoners who have escaped prison and now plan on getting revenge on her and taking out as many people as they can. Fast paced and full of suspense this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. A highly recommended 5 star read.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!! Yes, I received a review copy of this book, but no one tells me what to think, feel, or write about any book! I want to add this to my library in the future!

The cover is intense and grabs your attention!

This is the 2nd book in the series, and I would recommend reading the books in order. You will want to know what happened previously especially with the other kids. This is for adults due to the violence.

Michael and Detective Reilly are back as the main characters in this book. Michael has questions about his past and family. Sam is trying to protect him as always. Bad things start happening all over town and starting with the court house. Sam has a bad feeling. Sam has a lot of trouble, and Michael is a part of it. This book definitely gives you some heebie jeebie moments throughout, and it kept me guessing what was going to happen next! And it always surprised me. I really got hooked on Sam and Michael’s story! Of course by the end there were more questions, so I need / want to read the next book to see what happens next!

I highly recommend to anyone who likes mystery, suspense, thrillers with some paranormal, and tons of action! I couldn’t put this book down!

Reading the second book of series without reading the first is never a good idea. Whilst this book (the second in a series called Cycle of Evil), technically, does stand alone, I found it difficult to form a picture of the two main characters, Detective Sam Reilly and her ward, Michael. Their history and how he became her ward is an important part of their relationship and although, references are made, I think I would have benefitted from the full story.

That said, there was plenty of distraction from that little detail in the form of some dramatic action scenes and some very good portrayals of some evil nasty criminals.

Michael has a gift…or is it a curse?...he can see people’s fates just by touching them. He also has fragments of memories he needs to piece together to help him understand the tragedy that occurred when he was a young boy. Sam has taken Michael into her care, but she’s a dedicated police officer and her maternal instincts are struggling to surface, especially when some brutal criminals are intent on pretty heavy-duty devastation. Michael, his past, Sam and both their futures suddenly become dangerously connected.

It’s certainly action-packed with nail-biting stuff aplenty. But I couldn’t get close to either Michael or Sam; I found it hard to feel any emotion of any kind for either. The ending does leave a door open for a third book, but I don’t feel this is a series that can run and run.

For all that, it's a decent read which I quite enjoyed.

This book is the second in the series. The first book was Seeing Evil. I highly recommend reading it before you read this book. This book finds Michael Turcotte, the teenager who has visions of the future, living with Detective Sam Reilly, who has always had a soft spot for him since the day she found him as a toddler, at a murder scene. A shadow figure starts to communicate with him and says they have answers to his past and his future. Sam gets caught up in plan hatched by some crazy criminals and soon she is in path of some pretty evil people. Both she and Michael will have to make it through some pretty crazy stuff to make it out alive, as evil people from their past, threaten their future. This book was an action packed thrill ride from the first page to the last. This author describes things in such detail, that it really pulls you into the moment. Excellent read! Hopefully this won't be the last book with Michael Turcotte.

While the first book in this series deals with the concept of the paranormal, its focus leaned more heavily towards the crime aspects and the gruesomeness of those crimes. This book heads deeper into the paranormal and steps away from the gruesome and the crime. Personally, I was a bit relieved by that.

At the same time, I didn’t like this one as much as the first because that shift more towards the paranormal brings with it an even bigger leap into over the top situations and scenarios, losing some of its grip on reality and believability. It is incredibly difficult to marry paranormal with realism, especially if you are going to focus on things like crimes and police work. There has to be a solid foundation in reality to be able to pull that off in a believable way for a reader. I think this one took several of the scenarios too far out of the bounds of being able to suspend disbelief.

Top that off with a story line that seems overly complicated and disparate at times, I struggled to really get to the point behind a lot of what was going on. I understand that this book is built in such a way to create a foundation (and what seems to be a very elaborate one at that) for future books, but it all just got to be a bit too much for me as I’m just not a huge fan of those types of stories.

**This book was provided to me in exchange for a review.**

This second book in the Cycle of Evil series by Jason Parent was such an entertaining and engrossing read that I had to finish it without taking a break. I enjoyed the cat and mouse between both the physical and spiritual realms and players. And, of course you can't forget what a gift or curse, depending on your viewpoint, that Michael has, and how that either helps or hinders Sam in her quests for justice. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.

I received a copy of this book to review. This book s the second book in a series. I have not read the first book so I didn’t have the advantage of the backstory. The book was complete enough to stand alone. Very believable and likeable characters. I’m interested to read the other books in this series.

Good read

In the sequel to seeing evil Michael continues his battle with his visions while Sam the detective tries to help. A lot of danger stands in their way and more questions arise, looking forward to the next book in the series!

This is book two of the Cycle of Evil series and follows Michael and his life with his new yet unofficial foster mum, Detective Sam Reilly. In this book, Michael is searching for ways to be rid of his ‘gift’ – the ability to see people’s future fate by simply touching them – he classes it as a curse and does everything he can to avoid even accidental touch with anyone. Now it’s the summer break from school and he decides to use his free time looking for answers to what happened to his parents.

Sam has her work to contend with and promises to let Michael know what she knows of his past in the next few days, but work soon gets in the way. Michael is having nightmares and not sleeping well and even thinks he is hearing a voice talking to him as he sleeps. That turns out to not be as weird as it sounds. Sam’s FBI contact and friend Frank is also in town on some business and they are soon mixed up in an investigation of a brutal gang who set off multiple events causing chaos.

She is drawn to the local court where her previous nemesis is to go in front of the court, as well as Michael’s old friend Jimmy. Events soon put Michael in danger, from someone that may be able to help him, but to what end is the main question. Sam and Frank are also put in a dangerous spot by those after Michael’s gift for their own uses. Events kick off at the courthouse and a new ‘gifted’ person comes into the story. Michael gets kidnapped by the gang and Sam has to prioritise either his safety or her actual job.

Great to read a second book in this series. The use of Michael in helping Sam in some of her cases in the first book, ensured she ‘believes’ in his gift. In this one, he is slightly older and wants to find out more of his own history, that he knows Sam has details of, mostly to try and understand the power he has and either how to control it or make it go away. A lot more focused on Michael in this book and the one main event. I hope to see more of Sam and Frank’s relationship in any following books in the series. Michael is growing up and will soon enough be an adult and has already gone through more than any child ever should have.

Another interesting book in this series. I read it straight through as you get so involved with Michael, Sam and even Jimmy’s part in the book. There is also someone else that may have more knowledge of Michael’s gift and this needs to be investigated further. The first book gave me more to think about, as you are only just finding out about Michael’s gift, but the second book lets us see more of his back story and evidence of others with ‘gifts’. Can’t wait to se what happens to the series next.

I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I got this book for free in return for a honest review. I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. The story takes you on a journey of several life’s. There is no overkill on point of view changes. The writing is realistic and what I think to be accurate on how some people would act in these situations. The ending did not have as much as a band as I would have liked, but it did end in a way you know there is more to come in the story. I hope Michael’s friend is okay and they can help her before it is too late.
