Finding Elora

Rate this book
High school’s a whole new ballgame.
Elora used to be a big hitter, fashion-forward, and friends with everyone- until life threw her a curve ball freshman year, when she fell hard for John, the popular captain of the baseball team.

Unfortunately, Julie wanted him, too, and she’d stop at nothing to make sure Elora strikes out- with John and with the rest of the school, too. Julie’s plans worked for a while.

Three years later Elora’s not the same girl she used to be. But with the help from her best friend, Tallie, she’s aiming for a comeback. And this is a game she might just win.

I want to say that this book has an audience. Unfortunately I am not it. Teenage angst and coming of age are great stories for the teenage population but for me it didn't hold my interest. I got through it pretty quick as it is an easy read. Bullying and relationship issues are real for teenagers and they were clearly explored in this book but for me her problems seemed petty, Will the boy like me? Am I pretty enough? I know these are real issues for teenagers but for an adult it just didn't work. This book is a good fit for young girls looking to find themselves as they can relate better with Elora than a 31 year old woman who can barely remember most of high school. Teenage girls this book is for you.

I received a free copy for an honest review. I liked the premise of the story but I feel like the way that it flowed at times didn't make sense. With that aside, it was a lovely story. It's relatable to a lot of people because I feel like everyone has some kind of Julie in their lives.

Bullying, Flirting, and Relationships. . .

This book is a high school aged story focused on many of the typical issues teenagers find themselves facing. Now keeping that in mind a reader should also be aware that the book is more character narrated than dialogue driven.

Choosing to stay quiet and endure the endless taunting and snide remarks from the high schools mean girl, Elora tries to just exist. Elora's true and best friend Tallie urges her to stop hiding herself in fear of her bully Julie and start living her life. Elora wants nothing more than to be her once happy self confident, especially since she is finally talking to her longtime crush John. Every girl in school would love to date him, including Julie, so Elora is left questioning her feelings, his actions and their every conversation.

Overall, I wanted to like the story but I couldn't truly enjoy it due to one too many cons over pros for the book. The story format was a lot of Elora telling this and that rather than the characters actually experiencing the events. For the points being made in this book and the emotional pull you'd want from the characters, more dialogue was definitely needed. Sadly I felt nothing for the characters by the end of the story, actually I was rooting for Elora and another guy to become a couple because they made more sense based on their conversations. The plot itself was good with only a few issues here and there, the ending was a bit rushed but it has a good conclusion.

I received this book from the Goodreads First Reads program.

First the good. I was interested in the story and invested in the relationships. I liked their personalities and the differences that they portrayed and admired on eachother. There was also a great message on bullying. How it can change you even when you don't want it to. How there is a story behind the bully. Also how it can make you mad, but retaliating will not make you happy. Now for the bad. There were some blatant editing errors. It was hard to keep track of time. I could swear that only a few weeks had passed while the author said it had been 2 months. Overall it was an okay read.

ARC REVIEW
I truly loved this story. The teenage girl who loses herself because of a bully and then finds herself again with the help of her true friends. I love how supportive her friends are through her struggles. Additionally, how they encourage her to keep coming back to herself in the end. I was also nice to see that the bully's story was made to be understood even though it didn't justify her actions. I would recommend this book to my teenage daughter. In fact, I have already suggested my 10 year old daughter read it. She is an advanced reader and kept asking me what I was reading :)
