Malvern Manor has been many things over the course of its long life. In the late 1800s it was a hotel catering to travelers and businessmen; then it was converted into a rest home for the sick and infirm; and finally, it became a privately-owned care facility, providing a home for the physically and mentally challenged of six counties. It was often the last refuge for those suffering from alcoholism, drug addiction, and severe behavioral disorders. Long after the building closed its doors for the final time, many people claim that some of those residents never left. Now a magnet for paranormal investigators, it is said that the abandoned rooms and hallways of Malvern Manor are haunted by the restless spirits of those who once called it home. Does the spirit of a young hanging victim still linger upstairs, calling out for somebody to play with her? How can Rose, the haunted doll, move around inside her glass case without human intervention? Who is the aggressive shadow man that likes to attack visitors in the nursing wing? And what is the truth behind the malevolent entity that lurks on the second floor? Join author Richard Estep (TV’s “Haunted Case Files”) as he and his fellow paranormal investigators take up residence at Malvern Manor and embark on a search for answers.
I'm a 48-year-old child who has no plans to ever actually grow up.
I make my living as a paramedic, clinical educator, for a busy hospital system and work as a street medic in a 911 system.
In my free time, I serve as the director of the Boulder County Paranormal Research Society, and investigate claims of haunted properties, people, and objects on both sides of the Atlantic. I love to read, particularly SF/Fantasy, history and historical fiction, the paranormal, and basically anything that piques my interest. I appear on the TV shows Haunted Hospitals, Paranormal 911, Paranormal Night Shift, Haunted Case Files, and several others.
I am an avid video gamer, table-top gamer, and love to build Lego. My wife and I are the proud humans of five adopted rescue cats and one smelly but adorable dog.
Paranormal investigator Richard Estep along with his investigating crew decide to spend three days and nights in Malvern Manor that is known in the area as being haunted. After Estep watched the paranormal show "Paranormal Lockdown" that featured the manor he decided that he wanted to check it out for himself. The home was many things before becoming a manor with all kinds of people living within its walls which has brought about some different entities that live within the manor including a shadow man.
That is about all I can give out with a small backstory without giving away spoilers so if you are intrigued then go read this book!
Thoughts:
This book started out mild as up to about the 35% mark the author discussed some different things about the book with background information of what the manor had gone through as a building in the past along with the kinds of people that passed through there. After the 35% mark begins the actual investigation of Estep and his crew. This is where things get really interesting and creepy as Estep goes into details of what they are doing with their devices and what the devices do along with what they are hearing and seeing.
Reading this story literally captures the visuals of what the author is writing about as I can almost see what he is writing. I do watch those kind of paranormal true shows and have been watching them for years so I am familiar with the devices that he is describing.
This story goes into full spooky mode though after the 50% mark which kept me glued to my kindle as things started happening. I did go over to the Discovery+ channel to watch "Paranormal Lockdown" as I wanted to see the show that Estep was talking about that surrounds the Malvern Manor but on that show with Nick Groff and Katerina Weidman they did not seem to experience a lot like Estep and his crew were experiencing. So I think Estep and his crew stirred up something as there seemed to be more activity with their investigation.
All in all this was a great book which kept me on my toes and gave me some weird dreams. Yeah - I had some interesting dreams from reading this book which sometimes is a given when I read true paranormal stuff. I also liked how this author describes things and goes into details of what they are experiencing. I am planning on reading more books by him and his haunting experiences. Giving this book four "Freaky Creepy" stars!
Richard Estep does it again! And by that I mean: Kept me up until well past my bedtime while making me peek under the bed every now and then.
So yeah, here we are at the Malvern Manor, previously a Hotel for passing guests and much more recently a home care facility, with a few failed ventures in between, being currently occupied by what might seem to some as an array of otherworldly beings or perhaps just a few annoyed and cranky spirits (get of their lawn!).
Estep takes us on an adventure, for us readers, but to his group—a quirky and varied team of paranormal investigators—well, on a serious paranormal investigation that will last all through three fear-fueled and anxiety-ridden entire days.
I thoroughly enjoyed following Mr. Estep and his group through the nooks and crannies of this once popular place while searching for proof of the unknown, and to be completely and utterly honest I had to hug my chihuahua a couple of times just to feel comforted by the fact that I was not really there.
Although tedious at times, Mr. Estep manages to keep the narration at a fast enough pace while at the same time accounting for every bit of the 'evidence' that was gathered at each part of the location while explaining the methods and equipment that was being implemented and for that he gets extra brownie points.
I wouldn't classify this as a light read since it gets pretty technical at times, which might be interesting to someone who has a particular interest in the world of the paranormal and its ins and outs. So, if you're looking for a quick horror read this is not the book for you and I suggest you take the nearest exit to your left into the Goosebumps hall.
P.S. No pictures whatsoever here so get ready for some googling!
I've lost count now on how many books I have read by this author but I will say I think this book is one of my favorites and I wouldn't mind if he wrote a second book about this location. I feel it has way more stories to tell.
I'm really fond of Richard's books and have never been disappointed, and this one is no exception. I'm by no means a prolific reviewer, so I will just say that I consider this a must read.
I've read a few of Richard Estep's books now, and have bought the rest to read next. The writing is clear and organised, which makes the subject matter all the more startling.
He is the first to dismiss or debunk anything which can be explained rationally, but there are always plenty of strange and/or scary happenings to report. You feel as if you are there, in the moment, when the ghosts are active and speaking or moving things.
I particularly like the way that he and his associates are respectful of the spirits they interact with; after all, if they were once people, then it's a good attitude to have.
I recommend Richard Estep's books to anyone who is interested in the paranormal as they are not only a very good read, but well-written and thought provoking as well.
I bought this book to read before we investigated Malvern Manor but life happened & we investigated 3 weeks ago prior to me reading the book. After we investigated then I had to read the book. It’s crazy that in our investigations we had similar things to those written about in the book. I had some very interesting encounters with Hank. I have several of this authors books on the paranormal and love them all. I always get his books of places we’ve investigated. Farrar, Malvern and Villisca. Love how this tells of their investigations but also talk to Josh who takes care of Malvern & Johnny who we love from Villisca. People who have been to Malvern several times. If you’re into paranormal you need to check out his books and if you’ve never been to Malvern Manor please go check it out. I can’t wait to go back & want to ask some questions to piggy back off some of the answers they got in their investigations.

The title is what attracted me to this book. However, I didn’t find anything in reading this book that showed any evidence that “The Devi’s Coming To Get Me”! For me, the book seemed to prove more to me that there are a lot of overzealous ghost hunters. The book started out interesting enough however, about half way through it just became very repetitious to the point it was exhausting. The more I read, the more bored I became. I do give the author credit for trying and perhaps I put to high expectations into, who knows. It just wasn’t my bag of tea.
Do many times I have seen things, heard things move and find out later it was haunted. I would have never walked in if i knew it was haunted. I give great credit to those who explore those places knowing they are going to find something paranormal. All the stories in here that has happened to the writer would have had me screaming and running into the night. I loved it.
As always Mr. Estep has delivered a fantastic historical/ haunted masterpiece. I'm truly drawn to his ghostly books. Every one that I've read so far has been captivating and extremely entertaining and interesting. I just can't seem to put one of his books down for very long once I get started. I still have a few more of his books to read and hope he'll have some new ones soon.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Mr. Estep is down to earth in his writing and thinking, and he opens up some very interesting ideas on various aspects that I now look forward to researching for myself. If you enjoy reading about the paranormal, then this book is for you.
I don’t usually go for this genre of book, but as I was trying to expand on the type of book I read I thought I’d give it a go. Always had an interest in the paranormal. Reading of others accounts of activity within Malvern Manor increased my interest further. Would recommend reading.
This was a another great read I have never really heard of this place before I did get a scare with the shadow man. I for one am sure my reaction would be to leave at once.
Great read, I really enjoyed it! I haven't investigated Malvern but Richard "took me along" in this book, and his descriptions made me see things so vividly!
I love his books, fun to read and I always learn from his perspectives.
Awesome! This book had moments that terrified me and moments that made me laugh out loud. The author is really good at making arguments for different experiences and potential causes and he never takes himself too seriously. My favorite part, aside from the LEGO movie theme song, is that he refrains from using the word “demonic”. Instead, he presents clear descriptions of the different occurrences while admitting that in some instances, there can be other explanations. Highly recommend for anyone interested in the paranormal!
I normally don't know what to say when asked about a book, however, I will try to find words to describe how I liked the book; definitely interesting and attention grabbing. Worth the money and time invested.
Ask yourself whether you can answer this question about Malvern. Richard and his team attempt to answer and find themselves intrigued by more questions,as do many who walk these halls. Another great book by Richard Estep.
