Sexy Silver Foxes #2

Midlife Crisis

Rate this book
Another romance for the over 40.

Midge Everette.

I'm forty-one today.
It's my birthday, and I'm crying over burnt toast.
That's not some euphemism.
Literally, I'm sobbing over crusty bread,
so I call a crisis center.
I just need someone to talk to about life.
Only I recognize the smoky voice of the man on the line.
Sweet cheese, don't let it be...

Hank Paige.

As a former rock star,
I once had it all. Fame. Fortune. Females.
Except for the one thing I wanted most.
Then I lost everything.
I fix cars now and restore other people's dreams.
I just want to be somebody's someone.
And there's a certain woman with captivating eyes
who might be the more I’m looking for.
For the love of all things, please let it be her...

In the midst of questioning everything,
could love be the resolution to a midlife crisis?

Favorite Quotes:

“You are the most beautiful creature I’ve ever seen, lady.” His voice rings serious, surprised, as if he hadn’t noticed before and means every word.

Brut drew the line at the old leather couch. He claims it has sentimental value, and the only thing I can imagine is him losing his virginity on it. Otherwise, the wasted DNA on those cushions could be a science experiment in why people should not reproduce.

I know I said I want to make all your dreams come true, but I don’t know how. I have nothing to offer you. I’m being selfish because I want you to make all mine come true instead.

Each time there’s an issue, you actually come to me, and it’s refreshing. You don’t run away, you run forward, and I want to catch you.

My Review:

In my vastly unprofessional opinion, L.B. Dunbar is found treasure. I typically read at a much faster pace but I found myself dawdling and humming as I read, wanting to savor every word of this well-crafted, delightfully engaging, deliciously steamy, and dangerously heart enlarging tale. It pleased me. It was sweet, it was sexy, and it was cleverly amusing. I was quickly immersed in the story and remained well invested in the thoughtfully observant and original storylines from beginning to end. Each and every character was endearingly and uniquely quirky, well drawn, realistically flawed, and insightfully vulnerable; even the surly teenager. The agile and witty wordsmith known as L.B. Dunbar was a recent discovery for me during her last top-shelf offering of After Care, and I could kick myself for blindly overlooking her considerable listing for so long. Reading her skillful arrangements of words has been pure pleasure and seriously habit-forming.

Spoilery review..

I like reading about older MCs especially since we don't get enough of these type of books.
So I would think even if they are in their 40s they at least should have their lives together right? WRONG!

Heroine was insecure but she was a lot better than the heroine from After Care: A romance for the over 40 but she still was ashamed of sleeping with a man.

Hero was a washed up rock star who used drugs and was an alcoholic. He's been sober for about 6 years. He was still hung up on his dead lover who didn't loved him back. This dead lover also hid the fact that her son was his son so he doesn't meet his son until 26 years later.
There are 3 people in this relationship, Hank, Kit and poor old Midge. Midge who took the scraps that hero gave her. Midge who was insecure that he was still hung up on the rock star goddess. Is it bad that I didn't really want his son to be his son because this was going to cause him to be more hung up on his ex. At first I liked him until he kept thinking about kit here, kit there, Kit everywhere.

These washed up rock stars don't even bothered telling their heroines they were in a band. Why the hell not you might ask? Because they want their heroines to fall for the person and not the rock stars because their heroines are not slutty groupies.

After she has sex with the hero after she finds out that he fathered the rock star goddess son, she was leaving him and he called her Kit. What woman wants to be call by her current main squeeze ex lover's name? The woman who he supposedly was the love of his life? Btw while this woman was alive and he was supposedly in love he and she was still screwing anyone. That's the type of love this hero had for that woman. The had a volatile relationship. This woman who gave him a son and she hid him from him, she will always have a hold on him for the rest of his life. So now the poor heroine felt like she couldn't compete with a ghost and she's right if she's smart enough she will run like hell without looking back but we all know heroines in romancelandia are never smart but more like weak pathetic and stupid like this one.

And now I'm sad because I wasted my time on this.

Safety: I would said there's some OWs drama, considering his dead ex lover and one groupie who he had sex before meeting the heroine I don't know when was the last time he slept with her but she was a druggie and she appeared twice in the book. Last time there was a misunderstanding where she threw herself at him and she was not wearing panties the heroine's son saw the hero with this OW and he thought he was cheating on his mother with this ow. She overdosed and he took her to the hospital.
No sex with other after meeting each other. No sexual abuse. Heroine was married but she was not experienced although her inner sex goddess came out with the hero.

I loved the first book in this series, After Care, and was excited to read this one, but for me Midlife Crisis fell a bit flat on many levels. First off I loved that this series features older characters (roughly over 40), but in this book both characters struggled with life and over time I felt like we were beating the same issues over and over and I wanted to scream “ENOUGH!” I do appreciate this wasn’t an insta-love story and they had to work hard at getting to their happily ever after, but I felt like some of the issues they had were never fully resolved (IMHO they both needed therapy) and despite that they made some big life decisions.

Midge Everette is a 41 year old divorced mother of three just trying to hold her life together. She works in advertising and brand building, but isn’t really happy with the firm where she works and she overextends herself by volunteering for everything under the sun when it comes to her boys. Her ex-husband appears to be somewhat of an a$$ who moved the family out to California from Chicago to be closer for his then mistress who he is no longer with, but he is marrying his current girlfriend who is half his age.

Hank Paige is a former rock star drummer who fully led the life of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Now six years sober, Hank is trying to get his life together. He works with his brother at a garage rebuilding and working on classic cars and volunteers at a crisis center to give back to all the people who helped him get clean and sober and because he knows how important it is for people to have someone to talk to. Hank isn’t what I would call happy; he doesn’t particularly like his job, he was in a dysfunctional relationship with the singer of the band he was in for over 20 years who has been dead from cancer for close to 7 years, and because she was the sister to his best friend he lost him as well.

Midge and Hank meet at a party and have a strange encounter and then meet again by chance, in a lot of ways I believe they keep meeting one another because they needed one another, but in other ways I kind of felt like fate was screwing with them. I really felt like Midge was on the verge of a break down and despite saying she was affected by her ex getting re-married or the fact his new wife is half her age I do think these things were messing with her self esteem. I felt like Hank was kind of living a half life, he was just plodding along, not moving forward, but not going back either. Meeting one another shook them up a bit and took them both out of their comfort zone. I think they were good for one another, but Kit (Hank’s on again off again dead ex-lover) was in between them for the majority of this book including one huge revelation and I felt like they never really got time to work on them as a couple because Kit was always there lurking in the background.

While a good portion of this book simply didn’t work for me, I was happy these two found one another and after several setbacks made strides to be together, but I was disappointed that instead of seeing Midge and Hank work on their relationship, it was more about the past than the present. I will say that Midge’s kids offered an interesting challenge as well as insight as they watched their mother and Hank navigate their relationship.

While I wasn’t completely happy with the way Midlife Crisis played out, I am still thrilled to find an author willing to tackle romance for the over 40 set and I will continue to support this author’s work because there was enough good in this book to keep me reading.

Reviewer’s note: From the start Hank calls Midge “little lady” because she is apparently much smaller in stature to him, over time he shortens this to just lady (and he also calls her Middy because he thinks Midge sounds too old). Every time “lady” came out of his mouth, I kept hearing Jerry Lewis shouting it which I’ll be honest made the sex scenes not so hot. And Middy, kept becoming Biddy in my head so yeah, I had all kinds of problems with the nicknames in this story.

Midlife Crisis
By L.B. Dunbar
5 I More You Stars

When I heard that L.B. Dunbar was writing another over 40 book, I couldn’t get my hands on it quick enough!! Absolutely love this story-line with having couples who are over the age of 40. Real life happenings that for us over 40’s have experienced.

Midge is raising 3 boys after recently being divorced. Concentrating on her job, making sure the kids are at the 42,000 after-school obligations and needing a girl’s night out.

But since moving to California with her ex, she really hasn’t had time to make friends, ones she could feel comfortable with going out. Unable to say No, like most of us, she finds herself volunteering for a program at her son’s school. Where she meets Ivy and Edie.
Heading to a Meet the Wife party at Edie’s, it’s her first attempt to mix and mingle with her new friends.

Hank Paige is a man with many demons in his closet. A man who carries so much around in his heart for a woman who he thought he loved. Never moving past her, he has remained single.

When he is invited to a band members house to meet the new wife, he never thought he could want more…but seeking the bathroom to escape, his life changed that night.

What a fantastic story!!! Love meeting the men of Chrome Teardrops! I want a bracelet of Hank’s to wear too <3

I absolutely enjoyed After Care by L.B. Dunbar, an over-forty romance. So, when I heard she was doing another over-forty story, I could not wait to get my hands on it! In Midlife Crisis we get the story of Hank, Tommy’s former drummer, and Midge Everette, however, this is a standalone romance and can be read as such. Though I highly recommend reading After Care because it was also a great read!

Midge is a single mom who puts her children first. She is divorced and though her three sons are her world, she gets lonely. She always ensures her sons have everything they need, but knows it would be great to have someone to lean on as well. I loved how honest and caring she was.

Hank Paige once had it all and lived on top of the world, but that was a long time ago. Now he spends his days fixing cars. But he longs to find someone to share his life, but he also has some heavy baggage he carries around. Can he learn to truly open his heart again before it’s too late?

What I love about these stories, is that even though one person was once famous, they face real problems and issues other over forty-year-olds do as well. I also loved how both had family who supported them no matter what. It was also fun to see old friends again!

Hank and Midge were great together and had amazing chemistry. Their journey was not an easy one, but I was lost in their story from start to end. This was such a heartwarming story about second chances, love and family. A great read and one I would recommend.

Huh... Where do I start?
Are being 40 yo is old? Mature??
I liked a lot the first book in this series, but this one I almost DNF at 30%.
The heroine was 40, but she looked 14 yo.
But on last pages I did like her better. She seemed more mature and less nervous or insecure.
The hero was.... I didn't like him at all. Until 60-70% of the book it felt like threesome: H+h+ 6 years dead ex-lover. He calls the h once after sex by his ex-lover's name. WTF????
He thinks about his dead ex-lover's meanwhile the h is giving him BJ. How you like it?
And all the book they having sex on dirty sofa, some bathroom, or car. Like some teens...
I like a lot this author's books, but this one was not for me.

I didnt read the previous book in this series but I definitely will be as this was a great read.

This is a fantastic story with two super characters Midge and Hank.
Midge is a strong single mum who adores her sons.
Hank has had his own problems but he’s moving on.
Life hasn’t been easy for either of these and fate wants to give them a hand. I was really hoping that they’d find happiness.
The chemistry between these two is off the charts hot.

This is a beautiful and heartwarming story about two over forties finding love again. I really liked the secondary characters too.
I’m so looking forward to reading more from this author.

Midge Everette is an everyday woman, which means that older and younger readers alike will be able to connect with her, because while she may be 41 years old, the trials and tribulations she goes through in her story are situations that could happen to anyone of us, regardless of age. As a 40 year old woman myself, one with two boys of my own and a set of insecurities that come with growing older, I could identify with Midge’s internal musings and the way she handled things while feeling ill at ease with her decisions and actions.

Midge is an all-around amazing woman; her three boys are her life and she never weighs them down with her issues, preferring to allow them to grow up as normal as possible despite their divorced parents. She’s definitely a role model when it comes to parenting and her willingness to do whatever she can for her boys. Despite being divorced for three years, she hasn’t quite figured out how to get back into the dating pool, but that seems to change when a certain sexy and built man draws her in and appears to reciprocate the instantaneous connection she feels throughout her entire body.

Hank Paige has led a difficult life compounded by his rockstar status and his tendencies to indulge; he hit rock bottom over six years ago, and from that day forward, he has challenged himself to be and do better, not only for himself but also for those he loves and for those who need a person who’s seen and done it all and can relate to them because of it. But the one aspect of Hank’s life that he still struggles with seems to control his feelings and his actions when it comes to Midge and his desire for her.

The supporting characters in Midge and Hank’s lives play such a pivotal role in helping them to move forward as well as coming to terms with everything that has already happened. Because of Midge’s new group of friends, she starts to live again, more than just for her three sons, which is exactly what she needs to move forward and be happy again with where she is at in her life, regardless of her age, her body shape, or any other insecurity that makes her doubt the amazing woman that she is.

Midlife Crisis centers around Midge and Hank’s journey to find their way beyond their respective pasts and feel confident enough to put their hearts on the line when it comes to exploring their feelings for one another. There are definitely a collection of obstacles, both self-made and created by others, but at the heart of Midge and Hank’s story is the importance of friends and family and the necessity of living for oneself even when others depend on that person.

Older heroes and heroines may not appeal to all romance readers, but, to me, age doesn’t matter if the love story is told thoughtfully and passionately, which is the case in L.B. Dunbar’s romances for the over 40.

Now here's an author who writes mature couples' romances. I mean your heart still beats at 40, right? As long as it beats, it feels. Love, passion, lust, attraction. And why not act on it, cause love ain't got no expiration date. So when Hank Paige meets Midge Everette at a fundraising thing at Edie and Tommy Carrigan's place, there's that electric buzz which zaps both of them. Hank is a charmer, soon he has Middy cornered in the restroom and the kiss that he plonks on her lips just seals their fate together. Now the best part about mature people falling in love is that they don't waste time on unnecessary wooing. They get down to business real quick and are generally forthright about their feelings and try to work it out. They recognise loneliness and guilt cause they're kindred spirits.
a kindred knowledge of what the end of a rope feels like, I have a good idea of how she’s feeling. Despair. Desperation. Downtrodden.

description

It's more of companionship, a sounding partner who understands them, and gets their regrets and mistakes. After all they've Been There; Done That! So both looking for a warm soft place to land on.
I want to be somebody’s someone.
So they stumble through their personal lives, trying to decide that if this risk at this age is worth it or not.. But try as they may they can't keep their hands off of each other.
My signals are so mixed with this man, and I feel like I’m the one on the verge of sexually molesting him. I need to rein it in, but I haven’t had this kind of attention in so long, I just want to swing for a home run when I might need to bunt instead.
Hank is still stuck in his past and has trouble accepting the fact that he is lovable and wanted still. His abandonment issues play havoc with his mind
I see the way she looks at you. You could shit yourself, and she’d think you hung the moon, but you’re still hanging onto a ghost. A phantom who was invisible to you even when she was alive.”
LB writes with so much maturity and wisdom, she truely captures the essence of love which may not be smooth sailing at this age but hand in hand they can work it out. I loved the writing and the plot and fell in love with Hank and Middy.

FINALLY, an author who relates to where I am at. Women over forty love romance, too.  We love a little salt and pepper running through our fingers and the scruff that leaves telling evidence on our sensitive skin. We accept that we weren't his first but love that we will be his last.

L.B. Dunbar has written a sexy romance for the over 40 woman and she has nailed it. Midlife Crisis is an entertaining story that oozes heart-melting pheromones. Those little touches that make us gasp, make us swoon, make us realize what is important in a relationship.

Love after 40 the second time around has its challenges. Real life comes with responsibilities that inhibits our ability to be spontaneous, to be totally free. Intimacy now takes planning. Midlife Crisis touched many issues that face women, men, and couples today.  Hank and Midge have their own demons and past issues to iron out. They have the struggles of life to contend with, they have past lovers, past addictions, present day drama and the pull of wanting more with each other.

Insecurity and lack of self-confidence along with trying to meld to totally separate lives without knowing all those possible triggers were the tidbits that really hit home with me.  Women are complicated and sensitive. L.B. seems to know this all too well and she wrote an amazing 2nd-Chance-at-love story where two people try to face the world together and learn how to love each other more.

I was totally captivated with his couple and Hank made me want more. I'll never look at a cupcake the same way again. Having a man like Hank in your life is everything. Being someone's someone and having them look at you like you hang the moon like Hank does, is such a confidence builder.  I love getting to read about these amazing silver-fox men and how they give more in books written for us, the women over 40. Some looking for more, some just looking to relate to the characters and their struggles in life.

I wouldn't change my someone with the sea-glass blue eyes and the beginnings of salt and pepper for all the tea in China. .
Here's to many more firsts to come and more silver-fox reads from L.B. Dunbar.

Midlife Crisis by Author L. B. Dunbar is an over-40 romance with a stunning silver fox.

“I’m afraid to let go. I might float away.”

Midge is a single mom of three boys. Romance is something she thinks may never happen again for her. But, a chance meeting with the irresistible Hank lights a fire that she had kept hidden for far too long.

“Time to walk on the wild side. Make a wish, little lady, and take a bite.”

I was literally jumping up and down with the start of this story. Oh yeh! This is not your teenage or college romance. This is how the 40-ish adults do it...and boy do we know how!

“...he can’t have you. You were made for me. You’re my cupcake, and only I get to sample you.”

I swooned for the silver fox. Hardcore and edgy Hank, and his timid, sweet, and sexy Midge. What a pair! Watching these two grow in their relationship, going from a spark to reawakening of immeasurable desire, was rousing. I loved that Midge wasn’t some crazy, experienced, sex-crazed woman. She was reserved. She knew her preferences, her desires. She wanted to love and feel loved. Hank was just the man to change her everything and become his. He was the reformed bad boy, who still hung onto those tendencies in all the best ways. But, he knew a treasure when he found it.

“I want to be somebody’s someone.”

Author L. B. Dunbar did a fabulous job in giving us a story of more seasoned characters while keeping the story true to their age and stage in life. But, don’t think that this detoured our characters from having fun and finding out E-VE-RY sweet spot they could use to tempt and tantalize each other. Whew! If pages could blush, they would.

“...I want to fill you up, your heart, your soul. All of me for all of you.”

Midlife Crisis exposed a new shade of silver in an over-40 love story with mature steam and stamina.

Sweet Cheese!!! I can't tell you how much I am absolutely adoring these over forty romances by LB Dunbar. They aren't your average sweet love stories. You have people who have lived a good portion of their lives and who have experienced so much disappointment and tragedies but who have also been able to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and forge ahead with life. Living in the present is sometimes the hardest thing to do...to not go back and let the past determine your future. It is clear in this story that Hank is having the hardest time living in the now and although he may not wallow in the past, he certainly allows it to push into his present. Midge has come to terms with her current life and while she may not allow the past to push through, it does allow her to know what she wants. She wants more...she wants to be someone's someone. Secrets and miscommunications always play a part in how you can interact with others and both Midge and Hank will have to learn that they are worthy of so much more than they believe they are. Steamy, beautiful, emotional and at times heartbreaking but a truly perfectly imperfect story about a perfectly imperfect couple.

I love Midge & Hank! Their attraction is instant, but their relationship has some bumps & bruises to get through. Their banter is great, and I love the interactions between each character in their family units.

The only downside for me in this story was the level of miscommunication that kept happening. They would clear something up, only for it to rear its head again a couple times before they finally laid it to rest. That annoyed me for a portion!

What I liked a lot a lot - Inside Hank's rough exterior beats the heart of a sweet man, and although his heart was bruised, he does his best to let his Middy heal it. Midge doesn't recognize her strength, but it's there & it was great watching it shine through. Overall I enjoyed the whole of the story & I especially loved the way Hank found his sense of belonging, and true love. (Also, we get to see a bit of Tommy, Edie, Ivy & Gage & OMH there are some great scenes there!!) : )

“Why did it take so long to find you?”

Midlife Crisis is my first L.B. Dunbar book and I was initially drawn to the book because the main characters were over 40. I like older characters because they typically come with a few dents and greater life experiences, and Midlife Crisis definitely delivered.

Midge and Hank’s story was captivating. They have both experienced great disappointments with love and are eager not to repeat those same mistakes. I love how their relationship slowly developed as they got to know one another and – here’s where maturity helps – knew the value of actions over words at times. Yes, there were moments of indecision but they were both brave enough to put themselves out there and ask to be accepted for who they were.

The book features characters from After Care – in fact they are the catalyst for Midge and Hank meeting – but they do not take attention away from Midge and Hank. And neither do you have to have read After Care to enjoy this book. I haven’t as yet and it did not hamper my enjoyment at all.

Overall, a wonderful read and I hope L.B. Dunbar continues to write over 40 characters.

I haven't read an over forty romance for a while so this was refreshing. It shows the world sex and love isn't just for young uns!

Midge is a divorcee, raising three kids and doing a good job of it too.

Hank is a silver fox, with a history and a sex drive!

When these two meet there is a spark, a spark they cant ignore and they seem to have their hands on each other at every moment, before even getting to know one another - how reckless and fun lol!

A great story, will read this author again.

DNF

I made it to 12% before I threw in the towel.

Woman, you have had 3 kids, you are 41 years old and this is a human male. "Would it fit?" REALLY?!

Nope. I just can't. I loved the blurb and thought reading about older characters would be a nice break from the norm but apparently I was wrong.

ARC provided for an honest review

Wow, another great Over-40-Story. I really like these stories but not because the age of the characters per se but because L.B. Dunbar writes their stories so realistic.

Midge Everette is the mother of three boys, divorced and stands on her own two feet. She's the man of the house (ask her youngest son Liam). She's a super mom and she never talks bad about her ex husband (she's so kind). But she's alone and sometimes life is too much. But like most mother's who have to fight for themselves (most of the time, because there is a dad, but I don't really like him) and their families she never gives up and don't let her children see her struggles. I really love that about her, she's an amazing woman and mother. When she meets Hank, she likes what she sees and for one time only she wants to break free and do something a responsible mother wouldn't do.

Hank is not Midges type at all but she's intrigued by this tall, handsome man with his tattoos, black hair and salt and pepper beard. He's Tommy Carrigans (from After Care) former drummer and best friend. And he wants Midge from the first moment.

The two get to know each other and ...........yeah, you should read the story for yourself 😉

I enjoyed this story so much, it's a story about parenting, friendship, trust and love. Everyone deserves to be somebody's someone ❤️ and these two deserve to be together and be happy. Their connection is instantly and I loved following their way. Midge masters her life alone but she doesn't want to be and she doesnt have to. Hanks past wasn't easy but he was strong enough to pull through with help from his brother.
The whole book shows how important family and friends are and that's another thing I love about it. Midge and her sons stick together and Hank has his brother and his nephew and then there are Tommy, Evie, Ivy and Gabe. New friendships and old, its beautiful how they support each other.

They are all perfect together 😍.

4 “I More You” Stars

I absolutely loved every single word of this book. From the first to the last, I couldn’t get enough. I haven’t read Tommy and Edie’s story yet, but I will definitely be remedying that very quickly. Midge is a divorced mother of three boys struggling to raise them, work and get them to all of their extracurricular activities. Because she can never say no, she meets Edie and Ivy. These two ladies quickly become good friends and who knew meeting them would change her life forever.

Hank is the former drummer for Chrome Teardrops, and now a mechanic. He is also a man suffering from his own ghosts that seem to haunt him at every turn. Who knew meeting up with his former bandmate, Tommy, would change his life forever. Meeting Midge is the best thing to ever happen to him. He knows she’s the real deal, but can’t seem to get out of his own head and let the past stay in the past.

This one of those stories that could really happen in real life. Dunbar’s writing is superb and the story flows extremely well. I love that they are both over forty and still get their groove on. They have major chemistry and I adored the interaction between Hank and her boys. I can’t wait to see what’s next in this silver fox series!

I loved book one and was so looking forward to this next installment. After reading just a few pages my excitement quickly turned to shock, anger, and then complete disappointment.

Over 40 divorced mother of two teen boys reluctantly allows herself to be coaxed into attending a party. “Hero” joins her and several others chatting, says two sentences to her, then five minutes later follows her into the restroom where he proceeds to touch her and come onto her. Even going so far as to say “Don’t be frightened” and “I’m not going to hurt you.” If you’ve put someone in a position where you have to say that, there is reason for them to be fearful, especially someone you literally just met.

WTAF?!! This isn’t a meet-cute. It’s skeevy, and not the behavior of a romantic hero I want to read about.

For those of you who have read After Care and enjoyed Tommy and Edie’s story will be happy to know that L.B. Dunbar delivers once again with Hank and Midge in Midlife Crisis. Hank just melted my heart...he wants to find his someone...and divorcee Midge, she deserves that special someone. L.B. Dunbar gives us more of Tommy, Edie, Gage and Ivy...and we meet Hank’s brother Brut...does that mean we get his and Lily’s story next? One can only hope...of course there is also another character referenced quite a bit....will he appear out of nowhere? I am really happy to see these over 40 characters, they are real, they struggle with life issues...work, raising children, etc.. Sure there is some mis-communication, but, that’s expected with men and women regardless of age.

I've loved every book I've read by this author. But my favorites have been the over 40 books. I absolutely loved Hank and Midge's story.
One minute I wanted to shake Hank and the next I wanted to hug him. Your past demons and ghosts can keep you from living the life you deserve.
Midge is a woman after my heart. She was so easy to relate to and this just shows it's never too late I get what you want and deserve. This book gets a solid give stars and I've give more if I could!

It's not a secret that I adore L.B. Dunbar's words. She has the ability to write romance across may sub genres but I think she has really found her stride with her romance for the over 40 books. I liked catching up with Tommy and Edie, from After Care (which you do not have to read to follow along here),

There was just something so charming and endearing about both Hank and Midge. Both a bit lost and trying to find their way again. Both doing it in different ways. Midge by immersing herself in her kids and Hank in hiding under hoods. It was a random stroke of fate that brought these two together for the first time and they both walked away feeling unsettled by the encounter. However, it was Hank- and a little scheming- that brought them back together.

For as shy as she was, Midge was the one who mostly took the reins while Hank was left playing catch-up. To be fair, he had a hard past. One that still haunted him and being around Midge and her recently acquired friends, stirred up feelings he didn't quite have a handle on. I gave a silent cheer, even if it did make me a bit sad, when Midge took her stand and refused to compete with the ghost of Kit. And when Midge's sons stepped up and defended their mom I was like yessss boys- way to act like men!

The tension, the push and pull, the back and forth, the anticipation it all had me hanging on the edge of my book to see what Hank and Midge would do (or not). Midlife Crisis was as heartwarming as it was sexy. There was friendship, laughter, family, struggle, music and steam. And seriously, who doesn't love a sexy silver fox? I know I do and I can not wait for the addition to this over 40 collection.

Another great addition to the "over 40" series by L B Dunbar. I'm pretty new to Ms. Dunbar's work and have to say it is refreshing to read a book where the characters are closer to my age rather than in their 20s and the characters are everyday normal with everyday normal issues. I really enjoyed Hank & Midge's story and the pop ins from the characters from the previous book. I hope that we will see Brut's story somewhere down the line.

Wow! I for one will never look at another cupcake again without thinking dirty thoughts about Hank Paige! That sure is some hot and sexy sweetness right there!
Hank may not be your typical book hero, but he can be my hero any time. Despite his baggage, he sure as heck gives it his all, heart and soul. He is sexy, loving, sweet and kind but rough around the edges and I just love him! He is a big soft teddy bear underneath that gruff exterior and a man with a past that is just eating him up inside. Midge is a divorced mother of 3 whose ex-husband, while he was not her ex, moved her and their boys to be closer to his mistress. What a tool! Midge is an amazing mother and beautiful person who puts her boys first, always. She totally deserves more for herself in her career and love, but can Hank give her the latter freely??
Anyway, when Hank & Midge meet there is some pretty serious insta-lust going on but it all works and in that moment you kind of expect they would react like that to each other.
Of course their relationship is not without many uphill battles especially with the ghost Midge is fighting for Hank's heart. He may be a recovering alcoholic but he is still recovering from his past.
This is a wonderful story with so many beautiful and heartwarming moments and no shortage of hot, steamy and sexy moments too. I was so invested in this couple, I couldn't help not be. I was also thrilled to get more of Tommy & Edie and Gage & Ivy from After Care too. It really added so much depth to the story, like real life was going on around them at all times, plus I adore all of their characters so much.
This book will make you feel so much and want to be "somebody's someone" for sure!
I really hope there are more of these amazing after 40 love stories coming L.B. !!

Hank and Midge met at a party, but things didn't progress for a while - until they met again, and this time, Hank did everything he could in order to make Midge his.
I love this series, because the characters are mature, and it's wonderful to see that they can still find love.

For all of us readers who are over 40, L.B. Dunbar has it Locked. Down.
First you have Midge, divorcee, three young boys, trying to find her way as a single mother making ends meet.
Then there's Hank - former rocker, recovering alcoholic, smooth talker, hot and tatted (did I mention former rock star???)
These two meet, and the chemistry is off the charts. The characters are real, their problems will hit home for some of us, and the story is phenomenal. Definitely a must read!!!

Midlife Crisis by LB Dunbar
Narrated by Teri Schnaubelt and Aaron Shedlock
Standalone in a Related Series

I can’t tell you how much I want to LOVE LB Dunbar’s over 40 books. As an older single mom with 2 rock star kids, Midlife Crisis by L.B. Dunbar should be the perfect book for me and many aspects of it is. There was a lot to love. But something just didn’t 100% work for me.

Midge (I think that name was before my 80-year-old mother’s time) was divorced for 3 years and the mom of 3 grown boys. A lot of aspects about her were relatable and real feeling, but she was very naive for her age, so sometimes I felt like I was reading about a virginal college girl. Her ex is getting remarried, and she is a bit of a mess over the whole thing, so she hasn’t gotten out into the dating world yet.

Hank is an ex drummer still living in the past. Though he is in recovery from his drug and alcohol problems, they still haunt him, as does his relationship with his ex. Hank's dirty talk is pretty sexy, but sometimes it borders on creepy. He also has a lot of baggage, which is expected in an older man, but he needed to work his shit out.
“I see the way she looks at you. You could shit yourself, and she’d think you hung the moon, but you’re still hanging onto a ghost. A phantom who was invisible to you even when she was alive.”

I love a good sex scene. But every time I started to get into the story I felt like it was interrupted by a long sex scene. Admittedly I have a harder time listening to sex scenes than reading them, so that aspect may have been better in the printed format. I also love that it showcased that yes, older women are still capable of great sex, in fact it gets better. But still, I found myself wanting to just speed up those scenes so I can get back to the story—there were a lot, and they were a bit long. I think Midlife Crisis is classified as erotic romance, so that explains it a bit.
“I want to be somebody’s someone.”

I don’t know, I just kind of felt that they didn’t really want each other as much as they wanted someone. I just never felt that big of a connection beyond the physical.

Likes:

•Midge was a great mom
•She was relatable in many ways.
•The fact that they each have a lot of baggage adds to the realism.
•It highlights that older couples still enjoy sex, and lots of it.
•Some good funny moments.
•Hank was a great dirty talker (though see below.)
•Loved the kids.
•Her insecurities were so real.

Dislikes:

•Hank was a dirty talker which I love, but in some situations in the beginning it crossed the border to creepy.
•I felt like the story would just be getting good and then a big sex scene would ruin the momentum. Don’t get me wrong, I love sex scenes, but only when they help with the story flow, not impede it.
•I hate that he didn’t tell her ’stuff’, like it would have mattered to her.
•They were both in need of therapy.
•Hank’s dead ex was way too much a part of the story.

The Narration:
Teri Schnaubelt and Aaron Shedlock did a great job with this book. They weren’t the most common narrators and they sounded great for the older characters.

The Down & Dirty:
I love the fact that L.B. Dunbar is writing books with older heroines. I am 52 and just divorced. I’d love to have romance again in my life and I love to read about relatable characters who have actually lived life. But for me to absolutely love a book, I need to love the characters. I just didn’t here. Hank was a little creepy and Midge was likable but I wasn’t dying to be her BFF. I think what stopped me from truly connecting was that every time I started to connect, there was another sex scene that messed with the flow. But I must say, I did like that L.B. demonstrated that older couples can be hot too, and I refuse to give up on this series I know I should be loving.

Rating: 3.75 Stars, 4.75 Heat, 4 Narration

This definitely wasn't what I was expecting. I was excited to read this one after I read After Care, which I enjoyed. This one fell a little flat for me.

It's hard to get on board with characters who don't have their lives together, but then add in middle aged characters who don't have their life together, and you get one big mess. I get they both had life changes, but by their age, they should be able to bounce back in some form.

Midge. Her character didn't scream her age at all. She felt like an unsure young adult just getting her feet wet in life. She was indecisive, insecure, and weak. If I am being honest, I didn't like her character much at all.

Hank. He is one of those characters who you can tell will never have their life on track. He is stuck in the past, refusing to move forward. He is so hung up on his past life, he just can't live his current life. He has some sweet characteristics to him, but they are drowned out by his obsession with a dead woman who wanted nothing to do with him.

I figured out the "twist" very early. I am not sure if I was supposed to or not, but it was very predictable. I saw it coming a mile away.

I am not completely sure where I fall in my feelings for this book. There were parts I really liked, but the parts I didn't like tend to shadow the good ones. I think I could have fallen for this book if the characters were more age appropriate. The plot itself was okay.

4.5 of 5 Hearts

This is my first book by L.B. Dunbar and I am hooked! The humor in this book was spot on! I laughed so hard in a few spots I was crying. Her writing style is absolutely fantastic. I did not realize this was book two in the series and I cannot wait to get my hands-on book one!

Best line of the book "I more you."

The story flowed naturally between the two characters. You want to laugh and cry right along with the characters as they found their way through life. There were bumps along the way, but life is messy, and L.B. Dunbar gave us realistic bumps in the road. If you are close to forty or over forty and have children, you will relate to the heroine in the book in so many ways. I adored Midge Everette.

In this story, Midge Everette is forty and divorced. Her ex-husband is about to remarry and a younger woman. Midge is trying to balance being the mom and dad in many instances all on her own with no help and keep her ex in her son's lives. In walks Hank Paige a mysterious man who instantly gets under Midge's skin and shakes up life as she knows it.

Oh, Mercy! Hank Paige is so stinking sexy with the way he talks to Midge. He pushes that confidence that she lacked herself into her with just a simple touch or phrase. The issue is he was fighting deep dark demons that she did not know how to compete with. Hank had to find himself before he could be the someone Midge needed. It was beautiful to read.

Watching the love story of these two unfold was beautiful. Midge and Hank realized life throws you curveballs and it is okay to need someone to lean on and help you work them out together. These two really did make a great team.

At the ending, I was dying for just one more little chapter. I needed it so darn bad! I hope to see more of these two.
