Pirate Consort is the second book in an ongoing reverse harem space opera series.

Outlaw. Telepath. Pirate. Queen.

Mercy is no longer a fugitive running for her life and hiding from the family she left behind. She thought the hardest part of going home was going to be surviving the dangerous, psychically gifted pirates she calls family, but the truth is far more complicated, and her relatives aren’t quite as murderous as she remembers.

Now Mercy is their Queen, a role she never wanted. When a peace summit with the pirates’ greatest enemies ends in disaster, Mercy’s new life spins out of control. The Talented people she is supposed to be uniting are on the verge of a bloody war that will only end when all of them are dead.

Her consort, Reaper, is a psychic Killer, a man much more accustomed to taking lives than to saving them. And Mercy has never been responsible for anyone but herself. Now, she must embrace her role as queen and uncover the truth in a complicated web of psychic Talents and politics. If she doesn’t unravel a hundred years of hostility, everyone she loves will die.

Be sure to read the first book in the series, Pirate Nemesis!

After Pirate Nemesis I couldn't wait to continue the series and see what would happen next. I bought Pirate Consort the day it released and then it took me months before I finally got around to reading it. With how high my expectations were and how long it had been since I read book 1 I wasn't sure how easy it was to get into this one and if it would be as good as book 1.

Pirate Consort is a great sequel. It nicely builds on the pieces and story parts we got in book 1 already and builds up to some great reveals and an action packaged conclusion at the end. It's one of those books that get better and better the further you get. Having said that I also thought the start was this book's weakest part. And the end the strongest.

I admittedly found it quite difficult to get into this book at first. We start with a prologue with reveals the second consort and part of his backstory. I rather would've been left guessing who the second consort would be for a bit longer, but it was insightful to have that backstory, if not a very gripping opening. Then the start is very slow and not very gripping somehow and I found it hard to get into the book. I was really happy how the author shortly explained the key players, which helped freshen up my memory, but I do think it's easier to get into this one if you haven't read book 1 years ago.

I also had some trouble with the opening scene and the first few chapters. Part of the situation here feels very forced to me somehow. Then there are some parts later on that felt very convenient and allowed the main character to progress very quickly in a way she wouldn't be able to without that, but the twist that made that possible felt just a bit too convenient for me. It also bothered me a bit how over protective everyone was about Mercy, it was just a bit too much, even while it did make sense why they are so protective of her. I just didn't fully like it.

Despite my troubles with the start, the further I got in the book, the better it got. And the last 30% or so is very good and had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. The epilogue is great too and makes me excited to see what will happen in book 3. There are some interesting developments plot wise, there are some great twists and reveals.

I liked seeing how Mercy changed and her powers grew in this book. She also becomes more comfortable with her role as queen, which was great to see. I like how these changes are slow enough to be believable and the situation also helps her along. The way she acts feel very realistic and I like how she rises to the challenge and also her her doubts and struggles too. I also liked how she doesn't change her mind overnight about a second consort, but slowly grew more open to the idea.

Besides Mercy's point of view there are some chapters form other characters their point of views too. My favorite side character in this book is probably Treon. I like how he has to deal with something that's quite tough on him and it also shows how much he would do for his brothers. And I have the feeling there is much more to his powers than we first thought. While he can be a tad arrogant (okay maybe more than a tad), with how he get his point of view his personality is much more complex than just that aspect.

This book slowly starts building the reverse harem element a bit. I admit I wasn't sure this would be RH after I read book 1 until the author mentioned it, but I was curious to see how the author would handle it. Mercy is firmly against multiple consorts in book 1, so I was hoping her change would be believable and I have to say it was. I like how the author took things slowly and while she has her eyes on a second consort, it doesn't go further than that and doesn't get romantically here yet. I also loved how she talked things through with reaper first before her feeling grew even stronger. I really like it if people communicate well in books and I like how this was handled.

I wouldn't have minded it things went even slower with the second consort as it felt now that those few interactions increased the bond between them a lot and while I like Sebastian, I am not fully feeling their romance yet. But I hope that will come in book 3 as he does seem like a great character and I also like how different from Reaper he is. Anyway so far I like how the author handled the reverse harem aspect. I also liked seeing how Mercy and Reaper interact in this book. There are some really sweet and touching scenes between them.

I love the world building in this series for the most part. All the telepathic powers the talented have are so cool and I liked learning even more about it. I just don't really like the whole queen thing, which unfortunately is a big part of the story and these books. They just seem a bit too overpowered to me and I don't fully like how their powers work.

To summarize: Pirate Consort was a great sequel with an action packed end that leaves me eager for book 3. The book has a bit of a slow start and I had a bit of trouble getting into the book. The start up situation feels a bit forced and off somehow to me. There also a part that felt a bit too convenient to me. It's one of those books that get better and better the further you get. There are some interesting development and twist, I did predict one of the reveals shortly before Mercy found out. Mercy is a great main character and I like how realistic she feels. It was great seeing her rise to the challenge and step more into her role as queen, but at the same time she still has her doubts and worries too. I especially liked side character Treon in this book and seeing what he went through in this book added some great depth to his character. The romance between Reaper and mercy was still awesome with some great scenes. I also liked how Mercy slowly warms up to the idea of two consorts. She mostly just gets to know him better and doesn't get romantically involved yet in this book and talked things through with her first consort first. I liked the slow pace with which this developed. The world building is great and I like all the telepathic powers, but still not a fan of the whole queen thing and the powers a queen has. All in all this was a great book that makes me excited to see where the series goes next.

So I am LOVING this series, it’s a slooow burn which is always really lovely. Honestly I am so happy I found this series. However there are a few .... points that are just niggling at my brain which let the team down

A few points
1. Reaper had personality in the first one but is kinda ... there but not interesting, I’m not actually buying the chemistry between our mercy and him.
1.A ... also they said I love you WAY WAY WAY too quickly ...
2. Sebastian is actually kinda creepy lurker , on the side of the psychopathic grandmother because she rescued him as a child
3. At the VERY start of the book we got a POV from Sebastian which gives away who is the next consort
4. mercy is kind of annoying but at least her powers and training are getting better

“Being Queen is not easy. You are the one linked to them. You are theirs, not the other way around.”

*An ensemble space opera that doesn't remind me of Star Wars or Firefly!

Mercy is a great heroine. She's so down-to-earth and while she's constantly trying to figure out where she stands, she always tries to project strength. Hearing her inner monologue humanizes her in a fantastic way, though.

The cast of characters keeps getting bigger and we see a couple of faces from the last book, but they are artfully put aside so we can get to know some new people. There were a few heel-turns and a surprising amount of new perspective added to the plotline.

This world also continues to expand. Everything about 'the enemy' from the last book gets, we'll say 'revisted,' and now there's an entirely new threat to everyone and you know what? It was seemless.

My only real lament is that I don't have more story to read. What a wonderful place to go.

4.25.

Thisbis.avery good series, with fast pace action and very high stakes.

My only slight frustration is I want Mercy to actually start welding her power. The gang seems completely out matched at the moment.

I also really admire the author for letting the RH aspect grow naturally. This is very much a plot and action driven book with romance, that just happens to be RH due to their culture, on the side. It is refreshingly un-tropey for RH.

I would definitely recommend if you're looking for an RH with actual substance and a plot!

Lots more action in this one vs romance but still a good, entertaining read. I was just missing the feels of the first book. Still, I want to know what happens next!

I loved the fact that despite being able to snatch triumph out of the jaws of disaster at the end of the first book, Mercy is still struggling to cope with the demands of being Queen. I do get tired of books where the anonymous nobody gets boosted to take on the hugely responsible role they were predestined to fulfil – and then magically it all falls into place for them. Locke doesn’t fall into that tired cliché. Mercy is constantly playing catch-up in this high-powered environment where a bunch of telepathically powerful, touchy people look to her to enforce law and order.

So when a major incident crops up, requiring most of her coterie to see to it, she is left floundering. Quite right, too. And then she is thrown a lifeline from an unexpected source – which again, makes complete sense. I found I was completely engrossed in this page-turning adventure and urging Mercy to prevail.

The pacing is well judged – just as I was starting to wonder if the adventure was going to nock up to another level, the plot obligingly delivered the goods. Any niggles? Not really – if I was more invested in the romantic thread, I probably would be a tad taken aback at the speed with which Mercy and Sebastian were beginning to pair off, given her vehement views on multiple partners at the start of the book. But then, she does undergo a major change in her attitude during her training sessions – and it is the pragmatic course.

Overall, this is highly recommended for those space opera fans who like plenty of adventure with a splash of romance in their futuristic voyages.

I really enjoyed this novel which takes us farther into the society of space pirates. This novel is a little less romance than the first as the author spends more time on plot. There are no additions to the harem, but there is talk about who will be added next. Reaper spends most of the book off planet/ship, so there is very little interaction between the two. We do get portions from his POV to keep us in the loop about what is going on with those who are not with Mercy. We also find out the big bad may not be exactly who we thought it was. There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of this, but not one big enough to stop the enjoyment of the novel. I liked seeing Mercy become more confident in herself and her skills, and to see the end of her self flagellation for those around her being hurt the farther the book goes on. She has the potential to be a great queen.

I never struggled to get through this book, but I was far from excited whilst reading it. I did struggle to really connect with the characters. In a moment, while they are part of the story, I suppose I care enough, that I never wanted to put the book down, but then the scene would move away, and a different character would be more central to the plot, and I no longer cared about the previous character. Even now, I don't feel that I really care what happens to most of the characters, especially not the main ones. I still rather hate the romance elements, as in I do not see them. Mercy supposedly has a connection to two of the characters in the story, one that she's full-on committed to, and another that is just beginning. However, I am still not getting any romantic vibes between the characters. Reaper was introduced as having no emotions, and Mercy was just drooling after him occasionally. Then, bam, they are committed in a long-term relationship. I still don't see it, but I could set me skepticism aside. However, then Sebastian gets introduced as a possible long-term commitment, and honestly, I'm getting more of big-brother vibes from him, so I'm finding the possibility of him and Mercy a little gross. Granted, their connection is at least in the early stages, but I am not hopeful I will feel much better about it. I feel the greatest connection between Treon and Thirteen and that won't be happening for a good long while (if it is even in the cards for them). Since I clearly don't connect with the characters the way the author wants me to, I don't know if that was how she intended me to read Treon and Thirteen's interactions.

Currently, I have no intentions of reading further in the series. I'm not against it, but I just have other books in my line-up that interest me more at this point.

Okay. Hold on, I'm getting my thoughts together here. Because THINGS HAPPEN and I'm still processing.

You know how ...no, wait. That'll give away too much. Okay, let's try this...you know how sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better? That. THINGS HAPPEN and I don't quite know how to put my concerned, crazy eyes away, but WHOA.

Yeah, vague. I know. I can say this: In the first book, Mercy was thrust into a role she had no training for and only a vague understanding of. She made it work, but she had a long way to come before she could fully become the Queen her people needed her to be. Her instinctive responses were good, but there's more to being Queen than binding her people together. They might have the anchor they need, but she still needs to learn how to lead them effectively.

Fortunately, she has people she can turn to. Reaper, her consort and love who happens to have an unparalleled ability to kill anyone who threatens Mercy. Cannon, who everyone still looks upon as the leader. Except when those two and several others she relies on end up cut off from the fleet, she has to figure things out on her own. Fast. (Err, mostly alone. A few encouraging developments pop up along the way. Hellllo, Sebastian.)

Politics are messy, man. So messy.

Add in a nasty, NASTY threat to all talented and an insidious plot that's been fermenting for far longer than anyone can comprehend and things get dicey fast.

I still love the worldbuilding. I still love how things are playing out. I have no idea how Mercy and her pirates are going to get out of this mess and I'm 100% along for the ride.

Provided it doesn't kill me with anticipation first.

Great read

I really enjoyed Mercy's second book in the space pirate series. I am starting to understand and see who the consorts are and liking the choices and connections with them. I am excited to see where the next book goes and hope to see the connection with Thirteen and Treon in future books.
What I didn't really like or understand was the lack of actual romance and choosing consort two. I really liked Sebastian's character and think he is a good choice, but being that this is the second book to a three book series for Mercy I don't understand why it wasn't more focused and her actually choosing him. There just seemed less romance to this book. But what was shown of Sebastian, I loved. It felt rushed in parts and over explained in others. Plus, since the second book took so long to release it was confusing with remembering what happened and who are the characters names in the first book. I had to go back and skim through parts of the first book to refresh my memory. The author explains it also in the book but as I started it and was already confused before I got to the parts where she starts explaining.
But overall I liked it and do plan on reading the next book, hopefully soon.

I'd been waiting for this book to come out since I read the first in the series and to be honest it was quite a let down. It doesn't bother me that this will probably be a RH but I felt that this story didn't really go anywhere. Nothing about it moved me. It felt short both in length and in the sense that I kept thinking 'when is the story going to start.' I reread the first before I read this one and it honestly feels like two different people wrote it. Disappointing...

Good Continuation

This is a nice continuation of the series. There were some slow moments and a few that left me confused.

I am wondering how things are going to unfold. The power that a few of the people have is amazing and I can't wait to see what else people can do. I enjoy her new love interest and can't wait to see more of him. =)

I can't wait to read what happens next!

DNF for now I may reread when the rest of the series comes out but there's not enough to keep me interested right now. I quite enjoyed Book 1 but this one is painful and I don't have the energy or patience to plough through it right now.

Entertaining and Intriguing Space Opera

I’d probably give this book 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

This is the second book in an ongoing series. You need to read the first book in order to understand this book. This book ends at a natural break in the narrative but the story continues in the next book.

Now Mercy has claimed the Pirates and Veritas and become their Queen she wants to bring peace to both groups. Veritas isn’t particularly happy about the situation but have agreed to peace talks. Mercy must walk a delicate path as Cannon is still King, but everyone is claimed by her. She doesn’t want to rule but she is the only one with her abilities left to be Queen.

Whilst trying to come to terms with their old enemy, they discover that Veritas aren’t the ones they should be worried about. There is a third party of Talents hiding in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Mercy has to get trained and it takes a Queen to train a Queen.

In addition there is pressure for Mercy to take more consorts to give her political and physical protection. Reaper is one of the most dangerous Killers the Pirates have, but he is only one man and is often away on missions. Mercy isn’t sure she wants another man in her life. She’s not used to the idea of multiple partners but with 8 men to everyone 1 woman in the Pirate population it’s the natural state of affairs and it has to be something she considers, even if she’s worried Reaper will kill anyone who shows an interest.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this plot. I really enjoyed the ride. I love it when a book pushes your emotions and ideas all over the place and you never know what is coming next. It’s such a fun experience and this author does it well.

Mercy is an interesting character. She’s spent her whole life on the run from her family and now she’s thrust deep into the heart of their power. She is even having to wield that power herself. She’s compassionate and moral and desperately wants people to be happy, but not at her own expense. She knows how to be ruthless, she just doesn’t like having to act that way.

We get to know more of the supporting characters in this book. With Reaper being away for a chunk of the book we get to see more about Vashti, Sebastian, Treon and Dem. Their interactions with Mercy are not tempered by Reaper’s presence so we see more unguarded conversations. It’s more revealing of their characters.

We also see more world-building in this book. There are more details about how the Pirate society was established and the history of humanity in space. There is still a lot more information missing, but as there are few more books, I’m sure the outlines provided in this book will be filled in much more as the series progresses.

This is a fun series and I’m enjoying it a lot, I will definitely be downloading the next book in the series.

Needs more romance and less...

Possible vague spoilers ahead...

I’ve been waiting ages for this second installment to be released. I stumbled on the first book by accident and was instantaneously hooked! Reaper *deep sigh* and Mercy balance each other out so beautifully and I was excited to not only see their relationship grow more throughout this book but also see who else she will add as her consort!
- while we definitely get to see both Reaper, Cannon, and a few others protective streaks shine through for Mercy throughout this book it wasn’t as “heavy” as book 1. I’ll swoon for any tough alpha type with a soft spot for the h (cue dramatic entrance for Reaper) however I was disappointment that our two lovebirds were separated for most of the book. The book bounced around between point of views which still allowed us a glimpse into the going on’s of characters however I still found it lacking growth.
- We find out who Mercy possible consort #2 may be in this book! He’s a total sweetheart and I can’t wait to see their relationship bloom as well as see how he responds to Reaper. Again, I was disappointment in the lack of growth between Mercy and consort #2. They had their sweet moments sure but compared to book 1 it fell flat.
- I’d rate this book more of an action then a romance. Thus the 4 start rating. I will still be purchasing book 3 if and when it releases! I haven’t given up hope for this new trio and am excited to see how they developed. My only hope is that there will be more romance as a group and less political intrigue.

Excellent continuation for our band of telepathic space pirates

I have been waiting since 2016 to read this sequel and I really enjoyed it.

Telepathic space pirates and a queen meet new challenges and the real enemies make an appearance.

I also hope that the sequel will be here soon and that the good guys get a much needed victory.

Do we know how approximately many books will be in the series.

I sincerely enjoyed this book, but a couple items stood out:

Spoilers:

Pros -
Lilith and her real motivations were interesting.
I like that the queen is finally coming into her own and making decisions.

Neutral-
Didn’t remember or missed the fact that this is a reverse harem novel. I thought there might be other couples/relationships in the story.

I think an extra 30 pages would’ve helped:
Expanded upon Sebastian’s relationship, veritas treaty and working together, enemies motivations and other misc details.

Cons-

The ending seemed a bit bleak and I need to reread the epilogue again because it didn’t make as much sense reading about random people killing the monarch and all of his offspring. Seemed out of context.

I thought either it would’ve been about the new alliance, the next consort, the enemy queen herself, or someone in the enemies camp that wants to help the good guys.

Thirteen - I actually really liked her and I think she should’ve stayed even though she is the reason the good guys lost.
——

Overall I do really look forward to the sequel- crossing fingers -hopefully soon.

4.5 ⭐️
This is one of my favorite reverse harem series for the sheer scope of its wonderful sci-fi plot and story. The cast of characters is large and their various telepathic powers are so intriguing and fun. The slow-building reverse harem is rather in the background to the massive space plot, and I like not knowing who all will eventually become consorts to heroine Mercy. I have wishes in that regard, but I feel like they probably won’t come true, especially in one case. The writing is strong and intelligent with just a few errors relative to the length of the book. This second full book in the series was full of action and propels the story in an unexpected way. I’m very much looking forward to book three.

3.5⭐️ Another enjoyable instalment of this story! Very slow burn, lower spice (it’s there, just not the focus!), the focus is very much on the plot and broader struggles of the telepathic space pirate society. All in all a fun SF romance—the why choose part of the romance plot is very slow burn but you can see where it’s heading.

If you are looking for an interesting space opera with a romance plot woven in, I recommend.

Read via audio (hot tip: this and book 1 is currently included free in the audible+ catalogue, and the whole series is also on Scribd (a subscription audiobook app, a little like KU for audio)

This was a fun read. Good mix of action and romance. Was it super original?? No, some elements were borrowed from other recent books. Did I enjoy it anyway? YEP.
It did not take away from the story for me. Unlike some of the other comments, I actually prefer the action to the romance so that was an improvement and why I gave it five stars instead of four. Will happily read the next one so bring it on.

Traitors every where

You are Queen. Doesn't matter that you don't want to be. The fact remains. You. Are. Queen.

Mercy hated it. It irritated her when the few willing to tease her called her, "Your Majesty." Even her consort. But now, now she has no choice. She has to protect her people. Not just the ones she knows, but the ones that don't really trust or want her for their queen.

Because life as they know it hinges on her being a true queen.....

A good follow up to the first book. Lots of plot and world building. It jumps right in but then seems to slow down until the climax toward the end. I found myself double checking to make sure this was RH. It is low on steam and definitely a sloooow burn and seems she will building her harem as she goes. I did find the plot twist she throws in does open up the pool of available men.

This book had great pace. I like how there wasn’t instalove but yet such a sweet friendship that grows as the book goes on. I am SUPER EXCITED about the next book, and seeing how Sebastian and Mercy’s relationship develops further. I do wish there were more heated moments in this book, and with Reaper out in space for the most part of it, it left me wanting.

passable, a little dull in parts 2 & 1/2 stars
Not quite as engaging as book 1. Carysa Locke goes back and retcons several fundamental premises from the first book that change the flavor of the entire series and now I don't know if I can trust what I'm reading here. Less romance, more angst.

While I enjoyed this book, I didn’t love it like I did the first one. I think maybe because I was expecting a romance in this book and there was none. Not even really with her partner from the previous book. I hoped she would add to her harem, but she doesn’t. I like the story line, but I was easily able to put it down, unlike the first book.
