Bury The Past, But Shoot It First

Rate this book
Magic is back on Earth and there’s money to be made.

It didn’t take long for Shay Carson to figure out that being a hitman isn’t good for a girl’s retirement plans. Time to fake her own death and get the hell out of town. Start over in L.A. with dream job number two – tomb raider in a world just coming to terms with magic. Just as dangerous a profession but the payoff’s bigger even if someone’s still shooting at her.

Good thing this girl has better aim and no problem pulling the trigger.

Ice Witches, buried gold, tech geniuses, cartel home invaders… and then there’s James Brownstone.

Okay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.

I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.

There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.

Thank you for checking out my stories!

This was much better to read than its predecessor. From this point on, it coincides directly with The Unbelievable Mr Brownstone, we get to see Shay's POV regarding Nicole Anderson yet some of the scenes are exactly the same since Shay occasionally gets her own POV in the UMB series so it felt a little repetitive.

4 Even Her Jaded Heart Threatened To Open Stars

Bury The Past, But Shoot It First is the second book in the I Fear No Evil series by Martha Carr and Michael Anderle.

I wish I could fall completely in love with Shay's journey towards discovering her new self, and changing for the better. That aspect, the character growth she experiences through such a short time by opening her heart to peaceful possibilities and the exceptions around her, was entirely enjoyable. But there's a large portion of this work that can't be understood without Brownstone's side of the story. I had to switch back and forth between Shay's book and his to fully grasp every moment.

I don't understand why these two books couldn't be made to entirely stand alone. They each, equally, don't do the opposing MC justice. In the first book of the Brownstone series Shay comes off as lacking depth. In this series, so far, Brownstone has remained too much of a mystery. Maybe the authors wanted the readers to find enough differences within their work, so we could enjoy them seperately...? However, they seem lesser apart, imo.

As previously mentioned, Shay experienced a lot of growth in this novel. From helping Brownstone get vengeance for the death of his dog. To accepting that she's become friends with both Brownstone and Peyton. She even has bonded, at least in some way, with his new adoptive daughter Allison.

There's at least four possibilities of payback to present itself in the next book. Shay encountered the frogman, the nagas, the mysterious invisible and growling men, and the Grayson mercenary company. We know for sure Grayson is building their magical strength before they attack next, but I wonder if any of these other adversaries are concerns for Shays future?

There's even the possibility she incited retribution if she is somehow connected to her work in NYC at the end of the book, when retrieving the adamantine... Further, I wonder if the woman who poisoned Peyton when he tracked down Johann is Brownstone's go-to Witch Zoe? I'm excited to see what messes they can get into next.

And so very interested to check out Allison's own series spin-off in the future.

Oh my! Shay certainly knows what she's doing!

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book of her series, especially since it filled in a lot of gaps I'd felt, when reading the first four books, of the TUMB series.

I love that I now know things from Shay's point of view, and what she did, and where she went, in those times when she disappeared to do a job, when reading James's point of view.

Sorry, I'm not saying where, or what - go read these books, as they're sooo worth the time!

I really love having my unasked questions answered! Lol

Btw, if you're not doing it yet, do read the Author's Notes after each story. You'd be amazed at the amount of snippets of information you can pick up, while reading them - and there's times when I ended up laughing out loud at Martha and Michael's antics!

So, now I've finished Shay's second book, my reading list tells me that I need to go straight onto book three: 'Reload Faster', to continue with Shay's adventures.

As I'm willing, and able, to do so, I'm off now, and I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think about this next adventure!

Getting even better

I love the growth of the h. These authors really make the characters personable. You cheer them on the whole book. In this book she learned more about herself, cause on several more Acquisition trips, And learns to trust Peyton and James more. She almost dies more times than anybody I know. But she's not getting her butt kicked the whole time which is refreshing. She's also not infallable. It's just a really good story line and really good characters. Told mostly from her POV. And now we know how their relationship with Allison started. On to book three. Need to be dress in order for most impact. You don't have to have read any other series to jump onto this one.wonder when the romance will start between Shay and James.?

Alright, I’ll admit it, I’m hooked. So far I Fear No Evil and The Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone series are fantastic. Here in this book we see Shay at her finest, including some scenes from the book, Feared by Hell.

Normally seeing the same scenes is a little bit of a lazy writing style, but the way it was done here works better than normal. I’m happy to say this book is fantastic and well written. Sure some scenes were a little chaotic in style, but not enough to be a detraction for the story.

Overall, a wonderful read. I have been devouring this series and will continue to do so. Also going to have to give The School of Necessary Magic for the second spin-off of The Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone series.

Action packed urban fantasy series

An action-packed urban fantasy series. Great cast of characters and extraordinarily entertaining stories. Multiple Siri‘s in this magical world. This particular one is a little bit more adult oriented but there are four or five different Siri‘s in this magical world school of necessary magic series one is an eight book series and then there is a new school of necessary magic that has three books out so far. This particular series is about Shay Carson tumor raider future companion of James brownstone and does crossovers in many of the other books as well. Check them all out he will not be disappointed

It Depends On Your Point Of View

Shay is back building her rep as a Tomb Raider. She struggles with trust, loyalty, and budding friendship. She is majorly confounded by Brownstone. She refuses to admit that she is attracted to him, yet she is fascinated by him. I like the conjunction with the Brownstone books. It's interesting to see the battles and relationships from Shay's point of view. Value added. I look forward to the next book.

Yes, I'm enjoying these expositions of the 3 characters in their own stories but tied together

These joined yet separate stories have been a joy to read. Rather than devoting a chapter in a joined book to Shay's view, then Brownstone's, then Alison's, they have given each their own series, and kept them tied together.
It is enjoyable and intriguing, especially redeveloping dynamics between the characters.
I look forward to reading more of these as they continue.

At first I was nervous

I thought I was basically going to be re-reading Brownstone's book. There are some same scenes, because the characters interact, but it is so much fun finding out what Shay is up to when she isn't with James. Frog men, invisible men, shady contacts and subway hi-jinks keep her pretty darn busy! Look forward to her next set of adventures, because she can't have just one.

Good stuff

Seems strange to read about events in Mr. Brownstone 's from a different perspective but I like it. Shay 's take is fun and enhances the whole narrative. Looking forward to more from both and am also excited to hear the Alison is going to featured in her own series. Keep them coming.

Another excellent book from Carr and Anderle in the Oriceran Universe.

Shay is outstanding in her latest adventure, she learns more about herself with each "mission". Shay does meet a new Russian antagonist and that could prove interesting in the future. Good book, can't wait for the next one.

Moments of truth

Reading about the events from Shay's point of view that happened in The Brownstone books is interesting. We see a more complete picture, and it fills in some gaps. We also see more of Shay's thoughts, and new information.

There are lots of new concepts and characters, and I'm enjoying the character development, particularly the self-discovery aspect.

This whole multi-thread series it just a ton of fun. Hasn't been a single book I didn't like so far and damned if they aren't turning them out faster than I can read them. Heck of a ride, they are doubling up on content with the overlapping story lines but that didn't bother me and it is overshadowed by their incredible production rate. Impressive work.

Ex assassin and relic hunter.

My favorite line is "just because I'm no longer an assassin doesn't mean I'm a pacifist"
Lots of battles and lots of adventures. I liked the grumpy weapon smith , another character to learn more about. Seeing things from Shays perspective is enjoyable and I want more.................please😇

Loved it

Both this book and the one before it helps humid on the storyline of Brownstone and Carson's previous years. I love Shay's snarky attitude it make her more lifelike and alitte like Lara Croft.just waiting to see how things progress. A new dog for Brownstone would be very cool along with them hooking up.

Action, action and more action

Fast paced and hard to put down, my kinda book! The developing interaction between Shay and James Brownstone, along with the rescue of the Drow Princess is very well done by Martha Carr. The Oriceran Universe just keeps growing and is all the better for it.

Great exciting story

Loved reading more from What's point of view and her life. There are a lot of adventures happening, a lot of dangerous adventures. But Shay is just the woman to handle them. Loved it.

What a nice concept! Books explaining characters separately, to tell a more complete story when combined. (Did I explain that right?) I'm so looking forward to the next in this series. I think this should continue, will Alisen be next? Wonderful!!

This is only the second book by these authors that I’ve read but I’m already hungering for more. Can’t wait for Shay’s next book! In the meantime I’m going to get to know Brownstone better. Keep up the excellent work and I’ll keep reading.

I still like it.

I really don't have anything bad to say about the book(s). I like the characters and the stories. The 3 arcs in different books is interesting and seeing different views of the same story/event and how they interweave is kinda cool.

Pulls you in

Yet again literature that pulls you in, ever said " One more chapter, then I'll go to sleep. " Nope not happening, I had to force myself to stop reading and put the book down.
Word of warning this is not a book that you feel you could just read for a few minutes.

I enjoyed this book and I liked the characters, but I wonder if there’s an overlaying storyline that’s a bit more challenging in the coming books. It’s a nice entertainment and I enjoyed this book, but it feels like something‘s missing.
