As one who enjoys clean regency romance, I found this offering by Emma Linfield attractive. Other reviews are replete with synoptic discussions of the actual story. I will add no more to that discussion. However, I heartily concur with the many reviewers who declare that this story has mystery, sorrow, adversity, danger, romance, murder, loyalty, and devotion. The author kept me glued to my I-pad from the first chapter through the epilog. Seldom do I read works that so skillfully set the stage for the harrowing race to a dramatic resolution to the many barriers to an HEA conclusion.

That said, there were disappointments along the way. I am by no means an expert on the Regency period, even though I have read many regency novels. There were many passages where I got the distinct impression that the author is not as familiar with the period as she pretended. There are frequent instances where I had to read and re-read passages in an attempt to decipher awkward wording. I had a tough time buying into the scenario where the Duchess falls for and even agrees to marry Captain Balfour after only a few short months of widowhood. Though she and her deceased husband were nonconventional for the time, such a significant disregard for convention is just unbelievable. Although hypodermic injections may have been possible during this period by medical professionals, I have severe reservations that their use as portrayed in this story is in any way realistic. But, this is fiction after all. Nevertheless, I heartily recommend this book to my friends and award the author four stars.

Twaddle

What a nonsense this is. I am loath to leave a negative review, usually choosing to just leave none but I am moved to comment in this case. I really feel for the author who has put so much effort into something so dreadful, but then lose any sympathy I may have for her when she treats her readers with such disdain by her sloppy writing. Woefully inaccurate in historical language and social mores - even allowing for poetic licence in modern attitudes exhibited by the main players - the author has obviously published this unedited, proof positive by the constant use of inapt words, streams of misspellings and inaccuracies. It's enough to give the most verbose thesaurus-gobbling addict indigestion. The plot is thin, the main characters mostly unlikeable and their reasoning behind their actions incomprehensible. I am going to need several hours to rest my eyes, weary as they are from rolling them every page or two. Yes, I finished it, even checking out the so called extended epilogue, hoping against hope I'd find some redeeming qualities. I did not.

I tried to like it. Character behavior was all over the place. The story dragged. Just glad it is done.

Terrible, poorly written, and this author has no idea how British titles work. Sad, because I love a good historical romance.

It starts as a sweet, if somewhat tragic, story. But it becomes a sinister mysterie. But, still, a lovestory!
It is eloquently written, with lots of interesting and, mostly, charming characters.
I can't wait to read Emma Linfield's next story!

Mis à part qu'il n'y a rien d'énigmatique chez la gouvernante et des incohérences, l'histoire est intéressante. Dommage qu'il faille attendre le milieu du livre pour que ça commence à bouger.

This is a captivating story that full of sketchy characters, suspense and intrigue. Nicholas is a kind, generous, naive and charming man. Rose is a sweet, caring, strong and smart woman. After her husband's death, Rose takes a post as a governess for Nicholas's father. Nicholas, for the first time ever, finds himself attracted to a woman, but Rose has no interest in romance. Weird things start to happen when the man who informed her of her husband's death shows up. Death, illness and strife invade the mansion and while Rose investigates the unexplained death of her husband, Nicholas gets more involved with the man she thinks is responsible for it. There's not a lot of romance going on, but what does occur is sweet and loving. It's a fascinating story that I could not put down.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

A story of heartache, mystery, betrayal, sorrow, danger, murder, loyalty, devotion and love. Roses husband goes off to war and is killed. She is running out of money when she is offered a job as governess. She accepts. She meets Nicholas, Lord Buford. Nicholas' father, the Duke of Buford is found dead after a snow storm and hunting expedition. Does Captain Balfour have anything to do with this? Nicholas & Rose and Harry & Betsey all get very sick. What is causing this sickness? Is someone trying to hurt them on purpose?
Well written, well thought out plot.

A delightfully heartwarming new debut story, "The Enigmatic Governess of Buford Manor", a book easy to get lost in. Rich in historical detail of the regency era, this romance showcases beautifully the writing of a new author, Emma Linfield. With a plot filled with murder, mayhem, suspense and of course love, and wonderfully developed characters, this is a book not to be missed.

"The Enigmatic Governess of Buford Manor" easily rated 5 stars for many reasons including:
*The lead characters were well developed, with insight given to their feelings, their personality traits of being genuine and loving, and thinking of others first, plus how they coped in times of trial, made them easily liked. It was refreshing to have the two lead characters, Rose and Nicholas, have so many likable traits, rather than one in need of a total change in personality or roguish. This definitely made the story more heartwarming and easily invoked readers to want them to have the "Happily Ever After" they deserved.
*A varied back drop of characters to support the story. Both Rose and Nicholas had two loving parents (or adopted for Rose) who were there for them and as easily to like. Two orphaned cousins who in their own way brightened the plot and brought Rose and Nicholas together. And of course a villain responsible for the murder and mayhem (no spoilers). These characters definitely added to the enjoyment of the story.
*Even though the plot was filled with murder and mayhem, Rose and Nicholas stood steadfast to who they truly were. Even when the worst happened to Rose (no spoilers!) she didn't turn into someone hell bent on revenge. Rather they both cared for each other and the outcomes of the family.
*Many unexpected twists and turns to the plot, that from the beginning, were not apparent. However, looking back it was easy to see how the author expertly laid the foundation for the turmoil that was to occur. The originality of the plot, plus the suspense added, made this book hard to put down.
*The novel length of this book allowed the characters and plot to develop in depth, something that is missed in a lot of stories. This also allowed the historical regency aspects of the story to be richly portrayed including fashion, social etiquette, rankings in society and what was expected of them, estates held by a duke at the time and their household staff, courtship and society rules at the time, and so much more. A treasure trove for lovers of history.
*Lastly, the addition of an extended epilogue to the story after the one year epilogue. A treat to see where Rose and Nicholas were five years after the mayhem. Both epilogues also brought many of the back characters together in their shared outcome. Definitely a stand out feature to have insight into their future (no spoilers!) that is not always shared in many books.

There is so many more great points about the debut novel, but best not to give away spoilers! I recommenced this story to all readers who enjoy a heartwarming romance surrounded by a plot of suspense, not just readers who enjoy a historical romance. As a new author, I look forward to following Emma Linfield's creative journey and can't wait to see what she next has install for her fans.

I reviewed this book voluntarily from an advanced copy.

I read an excerpt of this book prior to release and was so intrigued I contacted the author to request an ARC. Fortunately, she agreed to send me one. I think the plot of this book was even better than I had expected from reading the first few chapters. The characters are well-developed and memorable, the plot is surprisingly tense, and the world of these characters is easy to visualize. In fact, almost everything about it screams 5 stars. There was only one problem, and to me it’s a big one. Editing.

At first, I thought the errors might just consist of misplaced punctuation and missing words, but the further I read, the more pronounced the issues became. The worst instances included some dangling participles that made it difficult to decipher sentences (Rose rushed to her side as her peers backed away, wrapping an arm about her comfortingly.), improper verb tenses, and using the wrong word (fission instead of frisson, deigned instead of desired, enveloped over instead of enveloping, omnipotent instead of omnipresent). A few times, I was simply unable to figure out what the author was trying to convey in her sentences. Other times, the wording was such that I’m pretty sure she said the opposite of what she meant. Run-on sentences meandered off on tangents, making it difficult to determine the primary subject and verb and why other verbs didn’t agree with it. It was very frustrating.

Here is an example of a sentence I could not decipher. This is actually the beginning of a paragraph, so I haven’t left out an intro:
Even though she was certain the hunting party had retired to their quarters for the night, as well into their cups before retiring. They were apt to sleep as snoring hogs might, Rose wondered why she was risking such a brazen move that evening. (WHAT?!?)

Unfortunately, the editing interfered with my enjoyment of the book for too great an extent for me to ignore it. The fact that I am giving this book 4 stars (3.5, if I’m being honest) despite this shortcoming is an indication of just how good the book was. Proper editing would result in a 5-star rating from me.

In what appears to be this author's debut novel, she made a valiant effort and in fact wrote a suspenseful romance with depth and imagery. My sympathies were aroused for Rose both as she waited for her husband's return, and then to discover that he was never coming home again. Rose had far more to give than the average woman, and it is the depths of her character that are revealed when she accepts the post as governess to the Duke of Buford's wards. Nicholas is a man who has watched his loving parents his whole life, and when he meets Rose, realises that she completes him in a way he never thought possible. Her charges, Harry and Betsey had been the bain of the household until Rose arrived, giving them the love and acceptance that they had been longing for. When the chips were down, it is the young cousins who save the day and play their part in seeing justice done. Regrettable, the editing left a lot to be desired as misspelled and incorrect words were used. I found the language throughout the book to be very flowery, which to a large extent got in the way of the plot. For the most part, the author also appeared to have little knowledge of the period, and it would be wise to brush up on the era if she is to continue writing this genre. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable read and look forward to seeing how this author develops as a writer. I received a copy of this book for free and this is my honest and voluntary review.

While the concept of the story is very sound, the execution of it missed the mark. There is room for improvement.

If this was a translation from another language to English, it wasn't done well. My brain just could not parse out the erroneous grammar in some of the sentences. But then that could be due to the translation, if that's what it is.

I wasn't sure what time period this story took place. Was I reading of the Middle Ages, Georgian, Victorian (Regency) 20th or 21st century?

The British titles were all wrong. The heroine Rose was literally a swooning, wilting rosebush; duke senior -gaah, who ever heard of such a thing- and duke 'junior' characters were just. . . not authentic as far as the British aristocracy goes, historically.

At first I read that the Duke's home was a manor, suddenly I'm reading about barracks and stockades - the manor suddenly became an army camp to 'hold' Captain Balfour?

I feel even if certain words have been around since the year dot, use the language of the time the story took place. It's just that simple for authenticity. Made even simpler, with a bit of research and consistent writing.

And if all that aren't enough, there are extended epilogues available for some of the author's books on the author's site. But one cannot just 'download' the free reads. Your email is mandatory and then of course your inbox suffers for that privilege thereafter. Talk about adding insult to injury.

The Doormat💃💔 Finally Grows Au Pair💞

After her beloved husband is killed at sea⛵🌊, Rose💃💔 must give up their little farm and find a job as a governess. Luckily, her neighbor's daughter is getting married and quitting her job as governess for the Duke of Buford's two orphaned wards, a brother and sister, and Rose💃💔 is able to take over the job.
Nicholas🐺, the Marquess, is the adult son of the Duke. He hasn't married yet because he wants to marry for love💘, an almost unknown aspiration in the Regency Era.

Nicholas🐺 grows fond of Rose💃💔, as do his niece and nephew, but Rose💃💔 has brought an insurmountable pile of baggage💼💼💼 with her that haunts her through the entire book.

Some of the scenarios in the book are over the top ridiculous. The reader must believe that good manners and station in life top the need for straight talk and honesty in the face of danger.

Rose💃💔 allowed her past to make her into a doormat. She struggles through the entire book to assert herself. To put it in old English, She grew tiresome.

This is the first of Ms Linfield 's books I haven't liked all that much, and I have read most of them.
The story was interesting and drew me along, but went on too long with various plot twists involving the villain👺.

What a story!!! Filled with heartache, betrayal, danger, murder, love, loyalty and devotion. This is a fascinating read. It is extremely well written, describing everything in detail as to what was happening at that moment. The characters are well developed and had from sweet to loathsome personalities. The story itself drew me in from page one and kept my interest and attention throughout the book. Rose Parsons, her life was about to change for the worse before it became better. She lost her husband at sea. She could not afford where she was for mush longer when her beloved friends and neighbors John and Bridget Boyle came with a letter and offer of employment for her as a governess at Buford Manor. It was the home of the Duke and Duchess of Buford, their son Nicholas, the Marquess of Rutland and Lord and Lady Arlington, whom were just children. So much transpired when she arrived at Buford. Her past came to haunt her. Evil was a foot in the Manor. At the same time Nicholas and Rose were developing an attachment. This is an exciting read that I highly recommend. Do not let this pass you by.

Emma Linfield is a new-to-me author and I can tell you I was not disappointed by reading this book. I found it to be well written and full of suspense and drama. The characters were developed and interesting. The enigmatic governess of Buford Manor is none other than Mrs. Rose Parsons, a naval widow who takes the governess position because she is unable make the rent on her home and farm. She becomes the governess of the Duke of Buford's 10 year old orphaned nephew Harry.

Rose meets the Duke's son Nicholas and they form a friendship that brings them closer together. Then something terrible happens that upsets everyone's lives. What is that happens? Will Rose and Nicholas be able to continue getting closer? Is there a villain in this story at the root of the problem? Isn't there always? If you like historical Regency romances you will love this one. Enjoy!

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I voluntarily submit my review of The Enigmatic Governess of Buford Manor.

I really liked this story. It is a mystery and is well written. The characters are marvelous and blend into the tale. The author has done a great job of keeping this interesting, it moves well and is even paced. She had waited a long time for her husband to return, he was a sailor. Capt Balfour came to give her some news, but he was not a nice man. Nicholas Frampton, Marquess of Buford, sent an offer of employment to Rose. She would be a governess. She needed the money to support herself.
It is danger, deceit, and lies galore, but they try to endure. There are even deaths, chaos, and fear start to make an appearance, excellent job on this book. I would love to read more of her work

Governess

This a good story with lots of twists and turns. I really like Rose, she kind and caring. The children add to the book. The duke and duchess make you want to be part of their family.. They seem to be the ideal family. Enter the villain, who I disliked immediately. I have to say I was left with many questions. What of the children's parents? Were they killed by the captain too? Rose was concerned that she brought the captain to Buford, but I believe the marquees mentioned that the captain had been to their house on other hunts. I enjoyed the the intrigue, but I have to agree that editing could have been better. The book kept me reading and eager to have the mysteries solved, most were. ??

dnf at 3%

The formatting is very poor - no indents and double (triple?) spacings between paragraphs. It makes reading very 'uneasy' and I wonder if it is a deliberate ploy to increase the number of pages read on Kindle Unlimited. I also notice that there is a rather large 'bonus' addition at the end of the book. Again - to earn extra money??

The writing is somewhat confusing. I started reading and at first thought I was reading a medieval romance - set in a castle - but there is reference to the Royal Navy despite Rose using a 'spindle' which implies it is set prior to the invention of spinning wheels. The dialogue is likewise 'clunky' and medieval and I gave up at 3% when the ridiculous paragraph spacings became just too much.

Excellent read! I received this book free from the author as part of the ARC team. This is my honest review.

This was a book I could not put down until the end. Rose is a young woman who has often been without in life.  Nickolas is a marquess who has grown up with every comfort imaginable. Together they are finding an attraction neither can deny. Budding friendship develops into deeper feeling. But Nicholas does not want to overwhelm the young widow with thoughts of love too soon. A mysterious addition to the manor brings terror and mystery. Who is he and what does he want?

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good historical love stories with mystery!

The Enigmatic Governess of Buford Manor is a delightful treat. The story is well written and filled with both suspense and romance. Rose is heartbroken at the loss of her husband. To survive she takes a job as a governess. Here her life changed dramatically when she meets Nicholas and the children. He’s a man of wealth and power but he needs a special woman at his side. What happens next took my breath away. I loved these characters. They pulled me into their life. I could’t put this book down. I had to know what would happen next. Emma Linfield’s writing is filled with drama and romance. I’m looking forward to her next book.

What a wonderful story by Emma Linfield. If you like clean, Regency romance with love, loss, mystery, lies, fear, murder, and more, this book is for you. There are such wonderful characters in this story—Rose Parsons; the Duke and Duchess of Buford with their son Nicholas; Betsey and Harry Arlington; the Boyles; and, of course, the villain. There is so much suspense, not knowing what will happen next. There is a happy ending, with an Extended Epilogue so you know what happens a few years after the end of the story. This is definitely a book I would recommend to others. I received an advance reader copy of this book, which I have voluntarily reviewed and given my honest opinion.

Wow! Man, talk about set backs. A rollercoaster of unpredictable surprises and circumstances propel all of your emotions bursting to life beautifully. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few mishaps make for remarkable experience. All the drama, angst and suspense really pulls this baby together perfectly. The characters are authentic, believable and so realistic with such depth and individuality its easy to relate. The scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Fantastic job Emma, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

An enjoyable storyline with some twist and turns along the way. I love it when authors put some mystery into their stories as it makes you want to keep turning the pages to see what comes next. This book did that for me, I couldn’t put it down. The main characters grew into their own as I read further into the book and even the secondary characters were impressive. I fully recommend this book to lovers of Historical Romance.

In the beginning of this story the author took the time to relate what I thought to be insignificant details, but as the book progressed and developed into a dark tale, it became evident she was “setting the stage” for what came next. This was a riveting tale and I love the characters of Rose and Nicholas.
The children Betsey and Harry added just the right touch of relief at the most tense times. This is a story well worth reading, and I highly recommend it and the author. I am eagerly awaiting her next effort.

Very well written story. Nice storyline and plot. A sweet book that has great romance. Typical regency story. True to its timeperiod. A clean romance. He wants her and does everything he can to succeed. A story about finding love in spite of what rumours and the surroundings says. Lots of chemistry. Attraction and love. The mix of mystery, sorrow, adversity, danger, romance, murder, loyalty and devotion makes it worth the read and keeps the reader on the edge.
There is , passion, emotions and some twists and turns. I like the main characters and how they develop and are described.

Don't Bother

Read this book only if you want an example of everything stupid. Yes, that is a word one is to no longer use, but it is so applicable. The characters fumble through a badly contrived and poorly written plot, and the characters themselves are cartoonish sketches. Add to this bad grammar, poor spelling, typos, and enough dangling participles to choke an English teacher, and one has a "how not to" book . Why did I keep reading? I kept thinking that it couldn't get worse; I was wrong.

A very entertaining read.

The only thing I didn't like about this book is the title. Enigmatic Governess? Anyway this was a interesting and entertaining read. I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue of this Historical Regency Romance. I was surprised and delighted by the lenient and modern attitudes of the Duke and Duchess of Buford about social status. I loved that I hated Captain Balfour and his underhanded ways. If course I loved the Hero and heroine.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Regency Romances.

What a wonderful debut book for this author. She gives us a heroine, Rose, that you will immediately love. The hero and his family are very special. They treat their servants well and are very warm and loving.
Ms. Linfield really is thoughtful with the plot. There are many things happening, but she develops the story at a nice pace. It did keep me turning the pages as I really wanted Rose to get her happily ever after.
I look forward to reading more books by this delightful author.
