A gripping and poignant wartime saga following the highs and lows of the young, courageous members of the Women's Army.
January 1941. Peggy Collins has learned a lot during her time as a Spark Girl. Posted to Swansea, as a driver to the squadron leader, she often hears things she shouldn't and she knows to be discreet, understanding how serious the phrase loose lips sink ships really is.
Peggy meets and falls in love with pilot Jim Hudson, but her heart is broken when he becomes missing in action and Peggy is left fearing the worst. That isn't the end of the shocks in store for Peggy and she is forced to remember a promise made long ago. But can she keep her word while the bombs fall?
I'm in a WW2 reading era at the moment, specifically squadrons and girls working at the bases and this did not disappoint!
Loved the different story lines weaved in throughout some great facts and information about life during the Second World War. I also appreciated that whilst there was a pilot, the story didn't revolve around what he did and it still focused on Peggy and her friends work.
There are so many WW2 fiction books that don't open the characters up emotionally, but this one does.
I'm still never convinced when people fall in love so quickly, but I will put this down to the times and not knowing where you'll be tomorrow so maybe it did happen more than we think!
Overall a nice read with an interesting insight into the blitz in the South West.
Well i can honestly say that this is a fantastic book the story was a mixture of sadness, love hate and above all friendship.Peggy Collins is loving her time as a Spark Girl along side her friends, she has a new posting to drive Lieutenant Colonel Carmichael.Peggy grows as a person even though her mom seems so strict but life goes on and war hurts all involved.I don't want to give too much away but i will say this book is worth reading and most definatley worth 5*
Fantastic book based on the life of a Spark Girl (a driver to the squadron leader) Peggy in Swansea. Many parts of the story were unexpected & lots of things from the start make sense towards the end.
Hopefully we get more on the rest of the girls in the next book. Great read, historical fiction that makes me want to learn more about the woman who became spark girls. Definitely five star read.
