Nate Temple has an appointment in Hell. One he can’t reschedule…
After recent events, Nate took some much-deserved time off for a little rest and relaxation. But when he finally returns home to attend what should have been a celebration of love, he finds insidious fear infecting the streets of St. Louis.
Paranoia. Chaos. Anarchy. It seems every supernatural family in town is sick and tired of Nate and wants to put him in his place. The worst part… all his friends seem to agree.
With everyone else fighting to prevent war between the families, Nate takes two of his scariest friends on a walk down that famous path paved with good intentions - to those eternal pits of despair - so he can finally demand some real answers from his parents.
He definitely never thought his actions could make Hell any worse than it already was…

Now, let's talk about this specimen of a man named Shayne...
Shayne Silvers writes the "Nate Temple Series" which features a foul-mouthed, flawed, young wizard with a chip on his shoulder attempting to protect St. Louis from the various nasties we all know and fear from our childhood bedtime stories.
Nate's been known to suckerpunch an Angel, cow-tip the Minotaur, and steal Death's horse in order to prove his point. His utter disregard for consequences and self-preservation will have you laughing and cringing on the edge of your seat.
But he has a lot to learn. Namely, how not to be so big of an A-Hole.
Shayne holds two high-ranking black belts, and enjoys conversing about anything Marvel, Magical, or Mythological. You might find him writing in a coffee shop near you, cackling madly into his computer screen while pounding shots of espresso.
If you didn't know, this universe has 30 books or so and it's recommended to read them in order, not the series, one by one. I chose to read the series for now, not the whole universe. Not because I don't want to, but because I want to keep some amazing books for dark days.
It would have been useful to read the other books too. I'm a bit sad I didn't... But I stand by my decision, this author is way too amazing to not have things to read by him.
If you've read the previous books, you know what to expect. Same amazing, awesome, great book. It's hard to believe that at book 9 the series is still just as great.
I loved this book. There's nothing better than to curl up in my favorite chair, forget about anything stressful and enter this book's amazing world. I was laughing while reading and I sure did get a few weird looks my way. I love to picture the stories world in my head as I read and the descriptions in this book make it very easy. The unique characters in this book are just awesome! This book is action-packed, with humor, adventure, danger, suspense, magic, betrayal, loyalty, shape-shifters, hell, battles and more. Get comfortable, you're not going to want to put this book down!
“If you like Jim Butcher, Kevin Hearne, Michael Anderle, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Shannon Mayer, or K.F. Breene, you will LOVE the ninth installment of the Temple Chronicles.”
This teaser comparison in the publisher’s blurb - as hard as it is to believe - is an understatement (and I’m a huge “buy every book ASAP” fan of most of these listed authors). The Temple Chronicles are more delightful than Dresden, more ironic than the Iron Druid, more criminally fun than Crimes Against Magic, more catchy than Kate Daniels, more mercilessly fantastic than Mercy Thompson, more elementarily addictive than The Elemental (hey, I couldn’t think of how to work “Rylee Adamson” in!) and more darkly delicious than Into the Darkness. (Ok, a few of those comparisons didn’t sound as good on paper as they did in my head, but you get the idea.)
This is, hands down, an absolute favorite character and Shayne Silvers’ Nine Souls, ninth of The Temple Chronicles, demonstrates why. It’s totally absorbing and has everything you could possibly want (demons and the paranormal, myth and urban fantasy galore) and more (not just werewolf weddings - anyone can have those - how about pregnant houses; don’t see that every day), in a gritty realistic atmosphere (yes, hard to imagine) that just somehow works, and works beautifully, and is pure fun.
Highly recommended. That’s an understatement, BUT for newcomers: even though you can read this standalone I strongly recommend starting with book 1. It’s a fantastic tale in itself and following the progression in Nate’s development from book to book in sequence will be more than worth the trip.
The comedy can't get any better. I have zoomed straight through this series, and can't wait to read the next. Characters of note: Talon, Carl, and Alucard. Chapter 51 made me cry like a baby, so what is everyone waiting for go find the first book Obsidian Son. Lots of Love, shizuku
just can't get enough of this Nate temple series i have blasted through 1-9 in the past month of reading them back to back always good read and never repetitive story in these books always something new and the laugh i have with the wicked sense of humor of this author is a plus he has added to the action packed storyline and world he has created with Myths & Legends & and things that go bump in the night he has brought to life in these character of this world is amazing if i could give more that 5* i would definitely i also read the unchained series and cant wait till next book from both series :-)
I love Shayne Silver's sense of humor. The ninth instalment of The Temple Chronicles is as usual packed with humor, action, mystery and mythology. I have come to adore all the quirky characters that makes this series such an enjoyable read. This book ended on a sort of a cliff hanger and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one. Mean time I'm going to start The Phantom Queen Diaries and hope it will be as much fun.
I loved it! Nate is growing. Not in power this time but in his soul. All of his friends suddenly are giving him the cold shoulder, but why? Read it and laugh, cry, chuckle, grumble and shout "Heck yes".
Nate Temple goes to Hell. It’s not because everybody’s been telling him to. It’s not even (just) because everything is falling apart in his regular world (although it is, what with his allies all suddenly facing challenges from outside the city and all). No, his purpose is to find answers from his parents.
Nate has his friend Death escort him and two of his other friends, Talon the Devourer and Carl, the Elder, to Hell, where Anubis assigns Virgil (except it turns out to really be Dante) to guide them to where they need to go. Curiously, the version of Hell that Nate journeys through is more of a composite of the entire Afterlife of all the religions of the world combined – including Heaven, the Elysian Fields, Purgatory, Nirvana, and every version of Hell that anybody ever made up.
Anyway, Nate gets to talk to his parents for what he feels will be the last time – and because someone is listening, they still can’t actually tell him very much, even though they are now willing. And in return for this, he must ‘pay the piper.’
Anubis doesn’t find what he was hoping for among the weapons and supplies Nate brought for the trip, so naturally, he asks for a life as a payment. Although both Carl and Talon volunteer to be the sacrifice, it is Nate who takes on the job of replacing Dante as Anubis’ guide to Hell. Then he is placed in a cell with his old enemy, Alaric Slate, the dragon until somebody needs to be guided through Hell again. The plan seems to be that they will battle to the death over and over (since people in Hell are already dead and promptly are rejuvenated once they die so they can do it all over again) for all eternity. But Nate has some weapons Anubis didn’t find out about, and he manages to finish off Alaric.
This leaves Nate alone in his cell. Being alone and without his magic appears to be a worse punishment for Nate than any battling. But he is rescued. And he finds hugs the best gift among all the things he learns in Hell.
The humor and the magic are still there. It’s another wild ride. And there is obviously still plenty more to come.
As always, Shayne weaves and knits all supernaturals and various religions into a believable and incredible story. I can never get enough of the Nate Temple Series or the Feathers and Fire Series. Both are excellent series which are always exciting, believable and always leave me on the edge of my seat anxiously awaiting the next book.
Didn't know what to expect when I first started reading your Callie Penrose series and Nate first appeared in them, so when I got done reading them I started the Nate Temple series have enjoyed both series
As a librarians daughter I was raised around books... and fed my literary hunger with H. Beam Piper, Piers Anthony, MZB and many other SciFi and Fantasy authors. Growing older I turned to Robert Heinlein and could not begin to tell you how many times I've re-read his works. I've been patiently waiting for another book from Jim Butcher when Shayne Silvers work was suggested to me by Amazon. Recovering from wrist surgery I spent many a night dropping my cell phone on my eye because I could only hold with one hand and was reading on the Kindle app on my S7 in the dark, hoping I would not wake my husband with the glow of the small screen... each and every risk of giving myself a shiner was worth it as I got pulled into my backyard - the setting of the book being St. Louis, Missouri - where I live a 20 minute ride across the river from. While his prior books seemed to be a bit formulaic - the first chapters having some sort of a fight scene that left you spinning, this novel was different... and Shayne seemed to not be wedded to the first chapter fight scene compared to his other books. The first chapter certainly hooks a reader - there is no change to that, however, Silvers does not stand on ceremony and the reader is taken on a wild ride through the story, with twists, turns, reveals and a satisfying outcome that still manages to leave you on the edge of your seat wondering if you want a beer or popcorn, and mentally counting down to the next release date where you get a chance to see how totally awesome his next beast of a creation will be.
-4 stars. some parts i like, some parts i disliked. i especially enjoyed the baby beast. and carl, enjoying his first visit to hell and singing a sound-of-music song while dancing in the blood rain, and then managing to turn that into a lethal defense. i could have done without the many mentions of clenching and sphincters. it got old fast.
"kind of like how parents could still say your name in that tone and you might flinch, even though you were a grown adult now."
"that was the best sex i never had."
"maybe the noise had gone unnoticed. must be tuesday again. damn Larry and his weekly flaying. all that screaming is enough to keep a guy up at night. i'm going to complain to the wardens. this time i promise. i've had enough. he's gone too far. i realized i was having an entirely fictional sitcom in my head and stopped with a sigh." [while trapped in hell]
"in the depths of hell, one of the lowest points that existed in all creation, a broken man told a boy about his hero of a father. and the celestial boy listened in rapt attention. a boy and a broken man found love in that land of despair, where hope had no name, long since abandoned in the city of woe."
Shayne Silvers has allowed us to once again visit Nate Temple’s world. Nate Temple, billionaire, wizard, and more… Friend to Freaks, feared by gods. Nate has spent years befriending and defending the Freaks and creatures of St Louis, usually much to their benefit. However, that is all set to come crashing down. A shadowy figure is sowing descent amongst the Freak communities, challenging Nate’s friends for the leadership of their various clans. The goal? To tear apart the cooperation and friendship that Nate has forged, and to spark a war between all of St Louis’s factions. Nate must watch as one-by-one his friends turn away from him to confront the threat to their communities. In the meantime, Nate is looking for answers, about his childhood, and his family. He is looking for answers about his parents’ activities prior to and during his childhood, and how his family history is tied to a sleeping Knight of the Round Table. To get the answers he needs, Nate is headed directly to the source, which means a dangerous trip unlike any he has undertaken. Nate Temple is going to Hell.
Rather than tell you about the story, I’ll warn you to be prepared as you read. You will laugh until your sides ache, and it isn’t going to stop soon unless you are a super fast reader. This author’s books are amazing. They are absolutely never dull, and they get better and better! I’ve stopped saying “this one is the best”, because the next one proves me wrong again!
What I love best is that the characters we already know and love come back to cause more mayhem. And then new ones get added and we love them too! This book is no exception to that strange phenomenon. Take a chance on this one, and I am sure you will be equally enthralled by the story-telling! There is laughter, drama, suspense, incredulity! There is no end to what you will experience, I guarantee it! So get a copy for yourself and enjoy one of the best stories you’ll find – until the one after this one comes out! It’s a laugh-a-minute, right before you jump out of your seat to scream NO……! Stick with it, though. You will never guess what happens next!
I can’t believe we are already at the ninth book in this series. One thing I will say about Mr. Silvers is that he writes not only quickly, but he writes well. In this installment, we are taken to a new place: Hell. Just when I thought the author had run out of places to takes us, I was proven wrong. Mr. Silvers repeatedly proves me wrong about many things including how I never think he can top the current book. So, if you are already here at the ninth book, you already know what to expect: great book, great fun, and great characters. You wouldn’t be wrong. One thing I really do appreciate is how much character growth is in the book and the ones before it. The characters have changed as events have unfolded in each book, as they should. And, even with so many characters, they are so unique, you never get confused about who is who. So, stop reading this review and run out and get this book! It is filled with the wonderful fun, hijinks, and great action you’ve come to expect with this series. Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
I am not going to give a synopsis as the book description and other reviewers will cover that nicely. Once again Shayne Silvers has exceeded my expectations. I finished this latest addition to Nate's story feeling like I was in the middle of a symphony, each book building upon the last and leaving me in eager anticipation of the next installment and the final crescendo. This series is a singular work weaving original and classic ideas into an original tapestry that stands alone. The best authors give us tales that rope us in and make us care about the characters and the events within their books. Truly great authors add to this by unfolding a whole world within our minds, one book at a time. This isn't heavy literature, or even remotely true to life, but beneath the wisecracks and adventure this series has heart - friendship, loyalty and love. I am always looking for authors who write like this. Outstanding. Mr Silvers has painted a universe with his words that I for one will visit over and over again.
Another superb outing into The Twilight Zone of Silvers' imagination.
Action, humour and intrigue abound in this fast-paced totally compelling new chapter of Nate Temple and friends in the chaos that is their lives. So many hilarious one-liners that I lost track. Epic battles, heart-wrenching and heart-warming moments and a downright creepy stroll through Hell.
An unputdownable, edge-of-the seat adventure that's bound to capture the imagination and deprive one of sleep!
I don't know quite how Silvers manages to weave so many intricate plot threads throughout this series without either tripping himself up or strangling himself in the attempt, but he deftly spins his wicked web and one part of the fun reading each book in the series is to try and work out which connects where and just when you (mistakenly) think you have an iota of an idea where everything is heading everything turns ninety degrees into another labyrinthine pathway.
As Nate, Talon and Carl get ready to go to faire and then to hell lots of changes are occurring. We have a mysterious White Fang going around to the different group of supernaturals and to add a twist discord is being sloan around. The mystery and twists are many. Nate is feeling strange but he wants answer hence a trip to hell to see his parents. He is looking for answers as to why he lost memories of his stay on faire as a child and his relationship with Talon and the round table. The return from hell is interesting and the uncovering of Jesse. Such an excellent story! I throughly enjoyed the book as you gave mystery, a budding romance, and plenty of humor! Alex is going through changes but he has unknown parts to him. I look forward to the next book!
Nine Souls is a strong addition to the Nate Temple series, delivering intrigue, humor, and unexpected twists. While it has a slower pace than previous books, this allows for deeper character development and a more immersive story.
Nate’s relationship with Callie continues to evolve as a slow burn, adding emotional depth, while a touching moment with Baby Beast reinforces the series' themes of loyalty and family. The plot takes Nate on a perilous journey to Hell, introducing new challenges and revelations that expand the series' mythos.
The unexpected ending is one of the book’s biggest strengths, keeping readers guessing until the last page. With its mix of suspense, humor, and heart, Nine Souls proves that Silvers still has plenty of surprises in store.
I love the Nate Temple series. I have from the 1st chapter of the 1st book. How can you not love a series when it begins with cow tipping the Minotaur. The whole series has an awesome balance between craziness, hilarity, gruesome violence and mythology. What's not to love? Shayne Silvers is keeping up his streak of great books with this 9th installment of his series. I won't give any spoilers here, but the story flowed wonderfully & both answered and raised a lot more questions. Plus, any book with something as f**king funny as Carl & the D would automatically get 5 stars IMO. Can't wait for the next book in both this series and in Callie's (love the interactions with those two, btw).
This book was great. Towards the end the comic relief had me giggling out loud at 3am. I just couldn’t put it down once I hit the halfway mark. This book really made my morning even though I refused to sleep until I had finished. Because it was so funny the last part of the book flew by, and before I knew it I was downloading the next book in the Temple Verse series.
I originally found the Feathers and Fire series which was amazing. Before I knew it I had read through 6 books of that series. Then I started to get intrigued by Nate and his adventures in Callies’ series. Since I caught up with the reading order of the Verse, I then moved to the Phantom Queen series. Once again, I adore the new series. Can’t wait to keep reading the Verse. Love it 💗
Another good read in the Temple series there is always lots happening in these books they are full of intrigue, hostility anger hatred and love there is always some humour which helps with so much darkness. Who else but Nate Temple would consider going to hell to speak with his parents and all the risks involved with that, he in his escape also released a dangerous entity which may just prove very costly. He escapes from hell to face his land being invaded by fighting werewolves and dragons that problem is resolved and he declares himself King of St Louis. His house has had her baby who was instrumental in getting him out of hell what will happen next for there is never a dull moment with Nate Temple need to read the next book to find out.
Nate is going to Hell in a hand basket! The hand basket was to small so Death is transporting him and two of his most lethal friends there personally. While his other friends in St. Louis turn their backs on Nate and break ties with each other things start to heat up in Hell. Will Nate bring Hell to its knees in his quest for answers to his past. Or will Hell's ruler destroy Nates soul? Will The Temple Team survive without Nate to hold them together and provide them with snarky comebacks. All the answers are waiting inside..... Shayne Silver's action packed, tear jeaking, hilarious, #1 best-selling book. NINE SOULS Must read Book of the year.
Shayne Silvers delivered one of his most enjoyable books. Nate Temple returns in this book to find his close friends and allies distancing themselves from him. Multiple plot lines involving his friends and Nate's visit to hell. What I loved about this book is how these old familiar characters continue to grow. New characters are also introduced and elements from early in the series are brought back in. Often times you read a tale and you just want to know the ending. With this one just wanted the journey not to end. It's laugh out loud funny and really tugs at your heartstrings. Can't wait for the next book in the series!!
Speechless. Nate keeps the drama level pegged to max in this latest adventure. All sorts of crazy things happen. All sorts of hints and foreshadowing. All sorts of unanswered questions, including but not limited to, the title of the book. The nine souls get mentioned a few times but the book ends without telling what they are or what their significance might be. Now don't get the impression that the book ends on a cliffhanger. It doesn't. But like everything else in the Templeverse, every answer just leads to more questions and, as usual, Nate's life is one ongoing adventure.
A dark roller coaster ride through an...execution and hell. A must read!
Nate stands witness to an execution of a very dear friend, an execution of marriage 😉 Then, thinking he is losing all his friends he keeps a tight scheduled appointment in hell, one that is dearly bought and a one time only trip. Will he make it back? What about Falco and her revelation of the last book? All sorts of questions get answered, and many more asked. A must read for fans of paranormal adventure. Hold on tight, it's a fast ride.
Why must Nate always get himself mixed up in these sticky situations?😂😂I loved the book, i only found two sentences where a word seemed to be missing but that's really irrelevant. The plot was perfect as was the humor, action, the displays of emotion, ALL OF IT😆 I'm dying for book 10 now as well as Callie's next book, the torture! Did an all nighter with this book as soon as i got the fb notification, could not put it down! I mean...come on.. WHO NEEDS SLEEP?😂😂 Keep it up Shayne, we're all rallying behind you😄
The series never ceases to amaze. So many bends and turns to the storyline that never seen to connect until suddenly they do. Nate's world is falling apart as one friend after another needs "space" from his affiliation. But what happens when Nate is in Hell without the backup he has come to depend on, facing a foe that he knew he already killed?
This book is a fantastic way to bring the whole story back to the beginning, preparing us for a whole new story ark!! And hopefully more of Callie!!
