I fell for the cute doggie on the cover. Fool me once. This is a dull, undeveloped story about an artist and a veterinarian.
I didn't like any of the MCs, including Sparks the dog. I know and love dogs. I parent. I foster. I've trained. I'm a bit of a dog whisperer.
Sparks was completely out of control and a danger to himself and others who followed him blindly into trouble. Alfie adored Sparks, but he was a terrible dog parent, and as a vet, Nico seemed oblivious to the crazy behaviour, although he judged everyone and everything else.
Nico was a douchecanoe, making assumptions, running away, not apologizing.
Even in the epilogue, he starts pouting when Alfie doesn't respond exactly how Nico wants him to.
Nothing about this story worked. The blackmail ploy was ridiculous. Holy stupid, batman. Alfie had money! He could have taken down his ex in a day. Instead he hides like an idiot.
A story about a cute dog and his loving humans ! ***... a three-legged Doberman named Sparks. Even the story about how he got his name is cute. We learn about his human, Alfie/Forest, 31, a famous artist, who has run back to his home town to get some peacefulness. His ex caused quite a scandal in the city. We met the crabby Veterinarian, Dr. Nico, 33, in the beginning, and learned he liked animals more than he liked people. Alfie is cleaning up the dusty house he bought, turned on the vacuum, it screamed a horrible sound, and that sent Sparks through the french door, glass flying, and chaos just beginning. Sparks has some PTSD issues from a previous owner. Alfie followed the trail of blood, and called the Vet. The chaos continues, and the two men are thrown together. I liked the dog and the two humans who start to care about each other. They do get a real connection going, a slow burn romance. All hell breaks loose, when after dating awhile, the ex begins a smear campaign against Alfie.
Alfie and Nico have terrific sexy times, and try to figure out the new situation. When Sparks is threatened, they pull it together. Sweet story of different men finding common ground in the animals they care about. A very enjoyable read !
This really didn't work for me at all. It felt like a bit of a lecture about proper dog care at times and the focus was more on dog breeds than the characters - Horne doesn't appear to approve of Springer Spaniels. And somehow the story despite the heavy dog-focus fails to have cute doggy appeal it couldn't decide if it wanted to be a dogs-come-first morale or if the dog was there for comic relief, complete with a Lassie moment!
Alfie seemed ok, only we don't get to know him beyond the fact he loves his dog. And an OTT family situation that was too much for a short story. Nico the vet though, I saw no redeeming features. He was arrogant, ignorant, jumped to conclusions, no people skills. Hey I prefer my dog to most people too, but I still manage basic manners. There was nothing to explain his spontaneous thaw and we simply get told they spend time together so don't see any bonding.
PLUS: “If he’s so willing to believe that trash then maybe he’s not worth it" YES YES YES Alfie that is so true - walk away! If we'd learnt anything at all about Nico -something in his past, Aspergers isn't mentioned but would explain how he's written- but we don't so he remains an unsympathetic highly dislikeable character.
Thought I was getting a light fluffy read with a cute animal, the reality was sadly charmless.
This contains a non-peeing, non-pooing dog. A magical dog that even fresh stitches don't slow him down. SMH... I originally liked the sample peek. I liked the characters, somewhat. However, the more that I read, the more ridiculous it became. Life's too short and so at 53% I gave up on this.
I own several David Horne books, but I was especially drawn to this book with the beautiful Doberman on the cover. I hadn't expected that the story would actually center around the dog. The dog was definitely the third main character. If you are a dog lover this should be a very enjoyable story, despite the standoffish, oblivious veterinarian who loved animals, but could do without interacting with their Human owners. He was reclusive in an extremely people present profession.
Luckily the veterinarian had an assistant "vet nurse" that soothed the ruffled feathers of all the clients' owners. The small town residents knew all about their eccentric, but very capable large and small animal doctor. He may not have had a bedside manner, but he genuinely loved animals and had no tolerance for an ill cared for pet or farm animal, regardless of species.
When the town's prodigal son returned - it was only a short time before he sought out the vet's services for his anxious, accident probed large gorgeous dog. Just like the dog's name - the Sparks danced between the two men. Whereas most people were put off by the vet's abrupt gruff manner, Sparks owner found his love for animals wonderful and his attitude amusing.
Not used to the interest of someone else, the vet was confounded, but Sparks owner's devotion, love, and care of his dog was very attractive, as well as his good looks & sense of humor.
The Sparks fly between the two men until some still smoldering embers from the past cause a conflagration, burning everything in its path. Can the two men rise from the ashes like Phoenix with a purple clothed fido's assistance?
Delightful story! I saw this last night and couldn't resist... i am so glad that i took a chance and read it. Story was gently done with care given to each of these characters. I enjoyed how they came to love each other and i adored Sparks, what a great dog character!
Nico and Alfie really fit together as they learn to love and trust each other. You will enjoy the read and the characters will leave you with a smile!
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. Antisocial Nico struck a chord within me – prefers animals to people! His relationship with Alfie progressed with all the usual uncertainties though love wins out in the end… Loved the fact that neither main characters were “perfect” – both had flaws – even Alfie’s pet dog only had 3 legs. A great read.
While I think the bones of this story were decent, there was very little actual substance to it. You got the bookends of the beginning and the end, but the stuff in the middle, the part where you get the actual connection between the characters was completely missing, making all the rest feel extremely unrealistic and unbelievable.
Animal lovers unite for their love of a 3 legged spunky dog. Past come back for one while the other try’s to save the man and dog he loves for the HEA they are intitled to.

My favorite character was Sparks the dog. He was great on getting the two main characters together. Alfie and Nico bonded over a common love, the love of animals.
