Bewitched by Chocolate #2

Witch Chocolate Fudge

Rate this book
Since arriving in the tiny Cotswolds village of Tillyhenge, Caitlyn is discovering that there are lots of perks to being a witch (although sadly, magic still can’t make your thighs thinner or stop you acting like an idiot every time you meet handsome “lord of the manor”, James Fitzroy).

But when the nasty housekeeper at Huntingdon Manor is murdered and Caitlyn becomes the main suspect, she finds herself surrounded by suspicious villagers. With the help of her sassy American cousin, a mischievous black kitten and a slobbering English mastiff – not to mention the old village witch and her shop of enchanted chocolates - Caitlyn sets out to clear her name.

She soon realises that this is no simple murder. Her sleuthing leads her to an ancient ring with mythical powers – a ring worth killing for. But with a few clever spells and some chocolate magic, Caitlyn just might solve the mystery – and find her real family too!

I am not yet completely bewitched by this series, but this is only book two so I am prepared to give it more chances. Sadly I thought this book occasionally developed into farce which can easily happen in a cosy mystery.

However the good bits were good and the love interest continues to be interesting. I need more about magic and less about how Caitlyn feels about her thighs. If she is to continue eating all the chocolate she will have to accept a certain degree of plumpness.

Overall I am enjoying the author's Oxford Tearoom Mysteries and English Cottage Garden Mysteries much more, but I certainly will move on to Witch Summer Night's Cream and see what happens next.

“Bewitched by Chocolate”, the shop where the decadent chocolate morsels were made and sold, some with a little twitch of magic. Caitlyn, her grandmother and the little kitten, Nibs lived above the shop, while creating new wonders in the back room. The night that Nibs escaped the house and Caitlyn followed him into the woods was a night of mystery, magic and unbelievable actions.

Witch Mocha Morsel is a fun and entertaining short story as part of the Bewitched by Chocolate series by Aussie author H.Y. Hanna which I thoroughly enjoyed. Recommended.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it

The first book in this series was so good! So I was eager to return to this series and it was awesome that book 2 was already available too. Witch Chocolate Fudge is just as good as the first book. It continues the story of Caitlyn her stay in Tillyhenge, her search for the truth about her family, mouthwatering chocolates and her involvement in another murder mystery! I love the blend of paranormal and cozy mystery in this book! And while it means there's a bit less focus on the mystery, that's totally fine with me as all the other stuff going on is just as fun to read about.

This one had a nice mystery. In this case it's an unlikeable character who has been killed and I always like how in those cases there seems to be an abundance of suspects. Even Cailtyn is a suspect. Some new information comes to light and I liked how the paranormal was also intertwined with the mystery. While I wasn't too surprised when we found out who the murderer was, it was still a fun mystery. What has me most curious is how each book leaves a small plot line open connecting to the mystery and I am curious if and how that will play a part in later books. I can't wait to see how that all plays out.

Besides the mystery we have Caitlyn finding her place in Tillyhenge, getting to know some people better and she's trying to figure out who her family is. That storyline about her family is one that's progressing slowly, but I like each new piece of information we learn. We got an important piece here, I already had guessed this might be the case, but it was fun to see it confirmed. I also have my theories surrounding Caitlyn her mom and it will be interesting to see if they are true or not. It's nice to have plot lines ie that slowly progressing throughout the series There's a bit of magic and paranormal as well, which is a fun addition. Caitlyn slowly gets a bit more confident in her magical abilities and sometimes uses them in this book. I like how the magic isn't overdone, but nicely sprinkled in between the pages.

Another thing I always enjoy about HY Hanna her books are the characters. They are all fun to get to know, they all have their own characteristics and 'they are fun to read about. We see more of Panoma, James, The Willow Mags and ofcourse the kitten and the English mastiff dog, who make some fun appearances. We meet some new side characters again. And the unlikeable Angela is there as well, I don't get why she's so nasty to Caitlyn. I also liked seeing how the chocolate shop slowly gets more well known, while they still battle some prejudice and superstition towards the shop and the Widow Mags.

To summarize: I was eager to return to this series and Witch Chocolate Fudge was a great read! I really enjoyed this one and was a bit sad when I finished. This book continues the story of Caitlyn. Besides the mystery there are other plot lines as well and it's nice to see everything progress and have a good mystery as well. The mystery didn't surprise me too much, but it was a good one. I also like how there are some small plot lines connected to the mystery in each book that stay open and I wonder if those will connect later on or play a part, I am so curious about this. Caitlyn learns a new piece of information about her family and we get to see more of the already familiar characters from book one and meet a few new ones. Overall this was another great read and I am already eagerly anticipating the next book in this series!

Witch Chocolate Fudge by H.Y.Hanna is the second book in the Bewitched by Chocolate Mystery series. A nasty housekeeper is murdered at Huntingdon Manor soon after Caitlyn's visit, and she becomes a supect. Another enjoyable and fun book in the series. The chocolate treats sound very tempting and Caitlyn learns more of her ancestry and some witchcraft abilities. I'm glad that some of the villagers are becoming less suspicious and antagonistic. Interesting characters and very entertaining

In this second installment of the Bewitched by Chocolate series, Caitlyn finds herself a suspect for murder. I didn’t enjoy this as much as the first but it was still good. I love how Caitlyn is getting better at her magic and that the Widow Mags is more willing to teach her. The legend of bloodstones is fascinating. “‘People in the Middle Ages believed they were formed at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, when the blood of his wounds fell to the ground and turned to stone… And even before that, people in medieval times believed that they had the ability to stop blood flowing from any wound--which is why warriors used to carry them into battle’” (pg. 68). I hope we will learn more about them in future books.

I had one big problem with the book, it was during a specific scene where, This just didn't make sense and it kind of ruined the end for me. Another problem was that I didn’t really care for any of the new characters that were introduced.

Hopefully the next book and mystery will be better. I'd really like it if the kitten could have a bigger role in solving the mysteries.

Favourite quote: “‘The power of the spell is not in the words themselves; magic is simply the ability to cause change by force of will. The spell works because you will it to, with your mind’” (pg. 97).

Welcome to a bewitching cozy mystery series, with a splash of magic. It was set in Britain and follows British English spelling and usage. You will be introduced to charming and lovable characters that entertain the reader through the twists and turns of each mystery, not easily solved. The heroine of this story is named Caitlyn Le Fey. After her mom passed away, she discovered that she was actually adopted after having been abandoned on the side of the road near Tillyhenge, a tiny English village. Caitlyn goes to Tillehenge, where her life changes dramatically. She lives in a room above a chocolate shop, when she isn't staying at Huntingdon Manor and is always eager to do some magic sleuthing whenever another dead body is discovered in their small village.

After Caitlyin arrived in Tillyhenge, she accidentally finds out that she is certified witch by birth when she inadvertently created a chocolate creation without even using her hands or a spell. The widow Mags was very impressed with her natural abilities, but refuses to divulge her parentage. Magic has not used excessively during these two books, but just enough to add a zest of flavor to these cozy mysteries. Lord James Fitzroy continues to run into Caitlyn when she is sure she looks her worst. However, he is attentive and protective of her, most often coming to the rescue when she needs him most. His nearness makes her heart go aflutter.

In this second installment, the nasty housekeeper at Huntingdon Manor is murdered and Caitlyn becomes the main suspect. Many people were at odds with this staunchly old servant and her blackmailing escapades. Caitlyn follows clues down different paths until she is sure she has discovered the culprit. Is she right? You must read it yourself to find out. Before you do, you will be included in a mysterious adventure that can only be found in Tillyhenge.

This is a clean read, which is I enjoy immensely. I was delighted to discover the lack of any typos or editing errors with this Kindle Unlimited edition (oh how this does deliver a more enjoyable read). The books in this series are able to stand on their own, but reading them in order assures that you don't miss any delightful details. The conclusion delivers an H.E.A. regarding the murder, but there will definitely be more entertainment from the band of merry characters in the remainder of the series!

This is the second in the series and I loved it as I did the first.
The plot is well developed as well as the characters and I find myself excited as I'm listening to the audiobook.
I wish I could reach in and taste the magical chocolates.
I'm definitely going to purchase the physical copies of this series as I really enjoy them so far.
Off to the next in the series!

Needs more Uncle Viktor

Caitlin Le Fey is still trying to find out where she came from and who her people are.
This time we find her being the suspect in the death of Lord James Fitzroy's housekeeper. While trying to prove her innocence she makes intriguing discoveries and Evie is getting a bit better with her magic. What will happen next?

My only major problem with this book is there wasn't enough Uncle Viktor.
I love that character and think he should be in almost every chapter. But that's just me.
It is a little slow moving since the first murder in Tillyhenge only took place a few weeks before. But it could be moving at a pace with Caitlin's self discovery

Welcome back to the Cotswold Village of Tillyhenge. Caitlyn is still living with the Widow Mags at her Bewitched by Chocolate shop and trying her hand at magic while trying to learn more about her mother. The handsome James Fitzroy is throwing a garden party for the village and has asked the Widow Mags to make things from her shop. The trick will be getting the village to try them as everyone is still suspicious of her. Pamona gets mixed up with a gardener who becomes a suspect in the latest murder. There is also a theft of what's said to be a magical ring. Of course Caitlyn will have to help her and investigate to get to the bottom of things.

One of the things I love so much about this series are the quirky characters. They're all so much fun! Uncle Viktor had me chuckling with all his "helpfulness". I'm glad Pamona has stuck around. She's good at getting Caitlyn into things. Also who doesn't love the descriptions of one little black kitten and one very big slobbery dog? I find the author's approach to the relationship between Caitlyn and James to be refreshingly innocent. It's very sweet to read how it's developing.
As usual, the author has written a well developed mystery and thrown in a few more clues to the identity of Caitlyn's mother.
I enjoyed this second book even more, in part I think, because I've grown to really like the characters.

This has quickly become one of my favorite new series. I would happily read them one right after another but since there are currently only two books out I'll just have to wait excitedly for the next one. Highly recommended!

This has been a fun series so far, I like the characters alot especially the MC, Caitlyn. She gets herself into a lot of embarrassing situations but usually because she is being nice. If you are sick of reading about characters who are mean, evil, or villainous give this cozy series a try. Enough mystery to make me come back for the next story in the series.

4.25 to 4.5 stars. What a refreshingly quick read! After the previous (much shorter book) taking so long this was really nice to get done in a few days. I was introduced to the author several years ago when she was writing contemporary romances set in Australia. I decided to try these cozy mysteries and I really enjoy them. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I'd love to give this a higher rating; the setting is charming, the mystery is entertaining, the chocolate descriptions are mouthwatering, but protagonist Caitlyn is so deeply grating. If she's not fumbling around, incapable of basic speech when in the presence of an attractive man, she's bitching about how her thighs look fat and that she can't wear this or that because of her enormous, grotesque thighs. Has anyone ever had fatter thighs than Caitlyn? Unlikely. It's mentioned again... and again... and again... to the point of being completely distracting. Caitlyn seems to lack a personality beyond being totally awkward and insecure about her looks. And if that's not enough to put me off of her, she turns out to be a fucking narc!

It's a shame that Caitlyn is such a miserable heroine, because the story itself has promise and there's clearly a long-term plot in mind with an interesting villain, but I don't know if I'll be returning to this series.

2019 grade B-

A fantasy short story in the series with standard predefined fantasy characters. There is nothing really new here but it was an enjoyable disposable read anyway.

2020 grade B or B+

Sometimes I just want a fun book to read. The modern comfy fantasy mysteries often fit that bill. Hanna is reliably fun and interesting so I bought this title and was suitably pleased. It is not great literature, but returning to the story after a break was easy. At times I had to keep reading before I could find a good place to stop. I did skip over a few long descriptions of food, or rooms, or clothing, but that is all. The rest is good characters, good settings, good pacing, and good story.

Recommended.

Witch Chocolate Fudge by H.Y. Hanna
Bewitched by Chocolate #2

Caitlyn and her cast of supporting characters return in this delightful second book of the magical Bewitched by Chocolate cozy mystery series. In this story Caitlyn learns a bit more about her mother, attends a fancy garden party, is suspected of murder and helps catch the murderer of Lord Fitzroy’s housekeeper. The book ends with a trail that might lead to a magical blood stone ring that was stolen and my guess is that Caitlyn will be in pursuit of the ring in book three.

Ms. Hanna’s books are always fun to read and in this one the characters, whether animal or human or even immortal, are entertaining. This is a quirky cozy mystery that has magic, chocolate, friends, enemies, secrets, family and the potential for romance.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. This is my honest review.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series it was a real treat to be able to delve into the second one straight away. Who could resist all those delicious chocolates?

In this book we have the opportunity to continue following Caitlyn in her quest to discover who exactly she is and her desire to find out about her family. There’s also room for her to carry on learning and exploring her magical skills. The Widow Mags, Bertha and Evie, as well as Pomona and Lord James continue to play an important part, and we get to know each one better as the book goes on. And then, of course, there’s my favourite Viktor the Vampire who is as droll and hilarious as ever. The mystery itself brings more well-written people from a dragon of a housekeeper to a sexy Irish gardener. In other words, there’s plenty to keep you reading!

Having said that, I didn’t enjoy Witch Chocolate Fudge quite as much as Dark, Witch & Creamy, but it’s still a great read. As one has come to expect in Ms Hanna’s books the murder mystery is well-constructed, and there are plenty of twists and turns to follow with Caitlyn as she homes in on the killer. And, once again, there’s the totally original and magical use of chocolate.

Although the murder case is closed there are still plenty of threads from the regular characters to carry over into the next book in this entertaining series. I for one am looking forward to it!

Caitlyn has only been in the Cotswolds a short while and is starting to come in to her witchy ways with the help of the Widow Mags, her daughter and granddaughter. She is also enjoying spending time with the handsome Lord Fitzroy. Caitlyn becomes the prime suspect when she finds the body of Lord Fitzroy's mean housekeeper. With the help of her cousin Pomie and the Widow Mags Caitlyn proves that she is not the killer and helps to find the real killer. Caitlyn also has to deal with some of the hateful villagers who have it out for her because she lives over the Widow Mags chocolate shop. I like this series. The characters are great and it leaves me really wanting chocolate!

This is book 2 in the series and I didn't read book 1 so I feel I missed some of the story line. But it has an old witch, a vampire bat that only eats fruit, a couple of hot guys, a cat that was rescued from drowning and one of the hot guys is rich. Most of the books is about the Garden Party at the Mansion for all the help and the village. There are a couple of mysteries to solve and you don't know until the end who dun it.

2.5 stars. While the first book in the series kept me giggling, I found the story line in this book to be rather predictable. The action picked up slowly, reintroducing old characters, but most of the plot twists felt obvious. The final reveal was also telegraphed, even if I failed to spot the primary antagonist. The resolution focusing on the overarching story line felt like lip service, and I'm uncertain if I will read the next in the series.

Witchy Chocolatey Fun

Caitlyn progresses, she gains a little confidence in figuring things out and gets more familiar with magic. She is attracted to Lord James but doesn't know what to do with her feelings. James has feelings for her but is too much of a gentleman to push it. Will they eventually get together? I look forward to the next book.

I'll loved this light hearted mystery. Serious subject matter, with a slightly naïve, but determined and intelligent heroine. I enjoyed watching the Widow Mags beginning to thaw a bit. Looking forward to the next installment, and the eventual disclosure of Caitlyn's history.

When walking to Huntingdon Manor to visit her cousin, Pomona, Caitlyn get caught in the rain. Arriving soaking wet. she is met at a side door by Lord James Fitzroy. Fortunately, Lord Fitzroy was actually looking for his housekeeper, Mrs. Brixton, regarding the Summer Garden Party or Caitlyn may have been left standing in the rain for quite a while.

After drying off and changing into some different clothes, Caitlyn overhears Mrs. Brixton arguing with one of the maids regarding a theft. While visiting with her cousin, they are joined by James and then interrupted by the introduction of Mrs. Harris. Mrs. Harris is upset because James invited the Widow Mags to provide chocolate for the Summer Garden Party. When James refuses to recind the invitation, Mrs. Harris leaves in a huff.

As Caitlyn returns to Mrs. Brixton's office again to retrieve her clothes so she can head home, she hears another argument through the closed office door. After changing in a bathroom, Caitlyn lets herself out through a side door and heads home.

Later that day, Caitlyn learns from Inspector Walsh that Mrs. Brixton has been murdered and it happened at about the same time that Caitlyn was leaving the manor.

Who killed Mrs. Brixton? Why was she killed? Will Mrs. Harris get her way with barring Widow Mags' chocolate from the Summer Garden Party? Will Caitlyn learn any more about her family?

The story leaves some secondary questions unanswered, which is a perfect lead-in to the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from the author and elected to provide this honest review.

After reading Witch Chocolate Fudge, it is obvious that H.Y. Hanna has another hit on her hands with her Bewitched by Chocolate series. After Caitlyn is singled out as a suspect in the murder of the handsome and charming Lord James Fitzroy's cantankerous and disliked housekeeper, Mrs. Brixton, she and Pomie set out to find the real killer, to clear Caitlyn's name. In the meantime, lots of amazing chocolate is being concocted for the Manor's annual garden party by the Widow Mags with Lord Fitzroy's blessing (to the dismay of the villagers) and Caitlyn's help. Honestly, it is almost impossible to read this book without having chocolates close by -- the descriptions are so mouth-watering, and the different flavor combinations they come up with are amazing (hint: read with plenty of truffles or fudge). The main characters are very likable, the Tillyhenge residents continue to be suspicious and many obnoxious as they disparage and avoid the Widow Mags Bewitched by Chocolate Shop, but they soon may be enlightened.

This book was a joy to read; the mystery of the death of the housekeeper, and the disappearance of the possibly enchanted bloodstone ring are intriguing and not totally resolved at the end of this book -- hence another book in the making -- Yay! I loved the bits of friendly magic used in the story. I highly recommend this book and the first book in the series, Dark, Witch and Creamy, and know it will become one of your favorites.

“Witch Chocolate Fudge” earns 5/5 Magical Chocolate Butterflies!

I am so ‘bewitched’ by this new series, and “Witch Chocolate Fudge” is just as deliciously exciting as the first book…I am craving for more! Readers will easily identify with Caitlyn as she sees herself a bit flawed with curly red hair and curvy hips, but will delight in her strength and the discovery of her voice speaking out against the gossip and cruelty. The ‘cozy’ murder mystery is clever and a few possible scenarios are provided to ponder and work out, but threading through this is the engaging mystery of Caitlyn’s parentage and the culture of witchcraft. The paranormal theme is realistic, not a lot of hocus pocus, just some incantations to enhance the delicious confections and to get out of a few predicaments. But there seems to be some hidden secrets that could lead to more magic, more ritual, more witchcraft. I am so eager to get answers to questions that have brought her to Tillyhenge, but those answers could put her in danger. Who is her mother? Why will no one give her a straight answer? What is the connection to the Fitzroy family heirloom? Who is Thane Blackmort? There are some interesting clues that may lead to some interesting revelations. I can’t wait…

“Witch Chocolate Fudge” earns 5/5 Magical Chocolate Butterflies…Brilliant!
Released 10/24/18; Posted 2/8/19

It’s H.Y. Hanna’s story that has “bewitched” me. To start Caitlyn overhears the curmudgeon housekeeper accuse one of the maids of stealing a Fitzroy family heirloom. But when the housekeeper is found murdered, investigators still suspect Caitlyn. She was near the crime scene, and when her alibi flakes, it’s easier to focus on her opportunity and means. Not again! The ‘cozy’ murder mystery is clever with interesting suspects, plausible motives, secrets, mythology behind the heirloom, and more than murder at the Huntingdon Estate. But threading through this is the continuing mystery of Caitlyn’s parentage and the culture of witchcraft. The paranormal theme is realistic, not hocus pocus, just some incantations to enhance the delicious confections and to get out of a few predicaments. Her relationship with Widow Mags is improving, and Caitlyn is beginning to show some aptitude for witchcraft, and of course, creating delicious chocolate delights. But there seems to be some hidden secrets that could lead to more magic, more ritual, more witchcraft. Her snooping uncovers more about her elusive family, a photo album, an old picture, and more questions. And her newly discovered inner strength comes in handy when gossip turns to anger.

It is always delightful to revisit the magic H.Y. Hanna brings to this series by listening to the audio version once again expertly narrated by Pearl Hewitt. Her voice artistry has always greatly enriched my experience with a her marvelous British dialects bringing to life each of residents and visitors of Tillyhenge. The story is a third-person narrative, so her natural British style dialect was pleasant and enjoyable. With the dialogue I enjoyed Caitlyn’s voice that showed a reticence or self-conscience manner, and with minute changes to her tone, she illustrated well a mature age for Widow Mags and the housekeeper, the education or status of Lord Fitzroy, and millennial youth like Pomona, and an Irish brogue for the gardener. Its been an education to hear so many different ways to speak “British.” I really enjoyed her East European dialect for multi-centuries-old Viktor, the sometime vegetarian vampire. The “male voice challenge”? Pearl did a very good job of that gender issue. I love Pearl’s voice and narration skill that I wish she could read to me 24/7!
