Hex Sister #1

Witch Unleashed

Rate this book
Toil and trouble are more than just words on Venture Island; they're a promise.

I keep this supernatural island resort running smoothly. I smile at the complaining guests and accommodate their weird and unusual needs. It's my job. I'm the glue that keeps my brother and dad from feuding and scaring the others away.

I've ignored my curiosity and the pull to explore the rest of the world for far too long. Twenty-four more hours and I'll wipe the fake smile off my face and set sail for my first off-island vacation.

But my plans change when the unimaginable happens...

A notoriously wicked witch dies and someone starts pointing fingers at my father. Walking away is no longer an option with the suspects and motives multiplying.

All that matters is proving Dad's innocence and I'll use every trick in my super sleuthing book to help.

Witch Unleashed is an emotional mystery with twists and turns that leave readers guessing until the very last page.
The rest of the books in this series build on each other, but can be read as stand alone.

Interesting characters

Liked the characters but felt the story was an introduction to a series. I'm not sure I will read any further as I don't really care what happens next.

Reading via kindle unlimited so hoping book 2 is better than book 1. This was so lame and unrealistic.

Help me read more books

As far as mysteries goes, it's not too bad, as far as magic stories goes, it's ok, and when you combine them into a whole, it leaves me wondering where half the story went. Good thing this one was free for me, or I'd be really unhappy. 100 page book should not cost 3 bucks, and only a half told story at that. Not nearly enough information for it to be a murder mystery, only brief glimpses into the minds of the other players on the stage, to try to figure out the most puzzling mystery of all: What's the story with the main character?
There's some small hints of that at the very end of the story, but without reading the second book, (no doubt equally mispriced), this book is hardly worth the time it takes to read it, never mind the price charged for it.
I gave it three stars, only because I'm learning not to hold others responsible for my tastes, even if they're valid complaints.
If you want a real magic murder mystery, this isn't the book you're after. If you're after an hour or so of reading, with subplots that never resolve, major plot holes, and only a single thread wrapped up by the end of the book, then feel free to grab this one, (especially if you can get it for free), and sit down for what *should* be an interesting engrossing read, that just misses the mark.
I'm not likely to continue this series, especially since it gives all the indications of being a charmed spinoff at first, (right up until we find out the name of the murder victim), which makes me wonder what else I may have missed in the author's efforts to shoehorn this story into something folks will drop good money to read.
Feeling betrayed here myself.

Tess Venture has just found out that she has magical powers. The problem is, she doesn't know that she does. What compounds her issue is when a witch is murdered on the island where she lives and that her dad owns, that witch's powers are transferred to her. She found out the hard way. She doesn't want these powers and doesn't want to learn how to use them.

Enter Ryder. He is a "cop" for the Witch's Council and is hot on the trail of the murderer. He uncovers some family secrets of the Ventures that Tess didn't know about and isn't too willing to hear. It was hard for her to accept the truth. But he likes Tess and breaks it to her easy. Plus, he gave her a talisman to keep her new powers under control until she learns how to use them.

This was a short but great read. I loved all of the characters, even the antagonist, Pippy. The plot was tight and the story entertaining. I gave it four stars because of minor editing errors. Overall, it was an enjoyable book and I'm anxious to read the second one in the series.

*I received this book as an Advance Reader Copy in return for an honest review.

Who's the Daddy?

A wonderful start to a new series. She has always lived on the Island, despite many attempts to get away even for a few days. Her job is making sure that all the guests at the hotel are happy and have all their needs met. The latest group of guests might mean trouble as they incorporate a powerful witch family. When the matriarch is killed, not only is everyone suspect but she has inherited her powers which added to her own (hers having been bound by her mother) make her extremely powerful. Who killed her? Why did they kill her and who has the investigator been tracking from previous murders. Home truths, some palatable and some not are raised and aired. Will the killer be finally detained? She is quick tempered and feels drawn to the investigator. He is powerful and restrained. A great read, can't wait for the next book (just a shame this was less than 90% of the page count).

Finding answers to Who You Are.

I just finished book #1 Witch Unleached of the series Hex Sister Cozy Mystery and WOW DID I LOVE IT! You are pulled in by a magic string that has you wanting to finish the book. Test has so much baggage on her heart that it hurts just to read what it is, and then finding out that that you have a whole new family from your biological father's side you knew nothing about that wants to talk to you. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal cozy mystery's as much as I do. I got myself a New Author and Series, can't wait to get book #2 Witchy Trouble.

Totally unexpected

I started reading this book expecting it to be just another cosy witch mystery, I couldn't have been more wrong, it's brilliant!. Start with the snarky heroine who has no idea she's a powerful witch, add in a magical murder, a witch counsel investigator and family secrets that will change her life completely stir well and you have this amazing book. If you love snarky heroines magic humour a little romance and lots of action with twists and turns to keep you turning pages, then this is definitely a book for you, Highly recommended a must read, Baz

This was an okay story. It had potential but never quite lived up to it, IMO. The characters were likable and the premise was interesting. In places, it switched between first and third-person, which was distracting. I wasn't always sure whose POV I was reading. Facts changed--for example, the day the ferry was due to return changed from Sunday to Friday. If Tess was leaving on the ferry(in Chapter 2), then why wasn't she packed and ready to go? Small things like that added up to cause me to give it 3 stars instead of 4.

A Five Star Beginning

This is the start of a new series from Kate Allenton and it’s great! Tess Venture is the first of the Hex sisters to be located and to set off on a new adventure. The truth about her life has been hidden from her. She finds that her family history is bound up in many layers of secrets. This promises to be a wonderfully entertaining new series and I’m looking forward to the next book!

I have been provided with a copy of Witch Unleashed by the author for an impartial review. This is the first book in the Hex Sister Cozy Mystery series and what a great way to start off a new series. I loved getting introduced to Venture Island and Tess Venture and the other amazing characters that go along with them. This book was just so easy to get lost in and can be read in one sitting. I can’t wait to read what happens next for this series and get to see more of Tess’s journey.

Always happy and entertaining with this author!

I always look forward to when this author comes out with a new book or series. Honestly, she can write any genre with skill and talent, I have never been disappointed. I’ve read a lot of paranormal books and this one has just the right mix of otherworldly, humor, family drama and mystery.

Pleasantly surprised

I thought this book would be rushed because of the page count but it was not. Excellent, unique, and fun. I've never read this author but I will be continuing this series and more. This book had everything that makes a great cozy mystery with lots of twist and just enough humor. Tessa is not so straight lace to be boring, to top it all off.

That was fun!

Has all the aspects of a good cozy mystery— a murder, some secrets uncovered, new friendships, and a bit of romance. This book left plenty of mystery to lead to the other books in the series. Interesting characters with back stories you are itching to know. Nice pacing makes this an easy, enjoyable read.

Cute book

Tessa grew up on an enchanted island where her family owns a hotel with only witches as guests. An unwelcome family arrives to stay at the family hotel and their matriarch is killed on a nearby beach drawing Tessa and a "killer hunter" who arrives via the ferry from the mainland into a search for the killer. Cute book. I really enjoyed the characters and storylines.

An island resort, a bit different from the rest, and a murder mystery, that reveals a lot of secrets, that were finally ready to be outed.

Terrific read, but...

I loved this but the lack of editing was a real issue. I do hope Miss Allentown finds someone in her life that does proofreading.

Mystery witch

Tess doesn't know that she's a witch. Actually Tess doesn't know as much about herself at all. Add murder to the list....
