The Necromancer's Smile - Book 2 - A Family Affair

(This is not a standalone)

Necromancer Sy York and former Detective, Alpha wolf Dakar Rhodes are slowly learning to merge their lives together as true mates. With the steadfast Brock and loyal Brad, as well as Connor and Clive all sharing the estate with them, for the first time in his life, Sy feels as though he has a family around him.

But just as Sy's starts to get used to his new life, an uninvited guest to his party brings trouble to the family group. Sy's father has been scheming in the background for ten years and arrives complete with Sy's new bride. Just as Sy remembers from when he was growing up, his father flatly refuses to accept Sy and Dakar's mating and an angrily thrown power ball is just the start of the couple's problems. To add mayhem to a volatile situation, Dakar isn't handling the threat to his mating very well.

Dakar knew Sy was more powerful than him from the moment they met and has told himself a dozen times a day it didn't matter. But a person's inner thoughts have a way of exposing themselves, especially when magic users are involved. Angry and frustrated, Dakar lashes out - could this be the end of his and Sy's mating before it even has time to settle down?

Ghostly grandfathers, scheming family members, new mates, and a meddling mother in law; this book has it all. Please note this is the second book in The Necromancer's Smile trilogy. The Epilogue in this story is the prelude to book 3 and starts the thread of a new plot line. Because of this some might say that this does end on a cliffhanger although the story line in this book is resolved. You will need to read book one before reading this story.

MM, HEA, Intimate situations between male adults, along with some violence and coarse language. Not intended for people under the age of 18.

Necromancer Prince Sy York his fated bonded mate Dakar Rhodes are in an established and permanent relationship. It's a done deal yet Sy's parents refuse to acknowledge that bond, contracting with a prominent French coven to marry their son to the coven patriarch's daughter. A political alliance to be sure but Sy needs to procreate an heir making this advantageous for both sides.

Sy has grown in mental and physical strength under Dakar's support. This new found inner strength makes it possible for Sy to do what he's so far been unable to do, stand up to his father, making it clear Dakar is his one and only.

Family allegiance and loyalty will be tested as the couple find out how far and to what lengths Sebastian will go to bring Sy back under his control. The ultimate test will pit Sy's mate against his mentor/best friend. Making a choice that could sever his future happiness and role in the paranormal world.
* * * *

Second installment in the "Necromancer's Smile" series that can really only be enjoyed after reading the first installment - in other words not really a stand alone sort of read.

I did like the concept of this series - a necromancer who isn't depicted as a bad guy/evil entity. Personally would have liked to see more of his skill with the dead but I totally get the author's movement into another direction to continue the overall plot series story line. I guess I was happy enough with a strategic restaurant scene that scratched that itch.

The romance between Sy & Dakar as they are bonded (equivalent of married in the paranormal world) but as all married couples includes periodic hardships. The primary hardship in this story being Dakar's new in-laws. Anyone who has been felt to be inadequate and hated by in-laws will definitely relate to the circumstances surrounding this story with the addition of the in-laws bringing in a "better" mate who has the appropriate reproductive anatomy necessary to procreate. lol

Romance is definitely adult in nature with the actual erotica featuring sensual and dominating man on man action because after all Dakar IS an alpha wolf. The PDA additions were appreciated as how many times do I read a same sex couple NOT being affectionate outside the doors of their home. Can't say how adorable these two were.

Secondary characters. As it's been a while I had a small degree of disconnect with Connor and Clive as they had a minor role in the previous installment. Brock & Brad however, so much I'd love to say about these two but would be spoiler info so I'll just leave it at the fact I found these two characters to be an important part in the success of this book for me. Sophia. Seriously? Madeleine & mama York scene really didn't do much for me so, ya, that was a jump the shark sort of thing for me.

While I will readily admit there were scenes that didn't work in regards to the overall story premise, the majority of scenes were a hit and reason this is an addictive series to read. Especially with the teaser for the next installment. Alice had better live up to my expectations as her role in the next book is what I am looking to the most. Well, other than more man on man fun between Sy & Dakar.

This is the second book in the series and I loved it. I don't know why but I have a weakness for necromancers! I mean they are always portrayed standoffish and cold but then with their loved ones they open up and show their soft side plus the power they have is awesome too.

In this book it's family drama. Totally over the top because nobody can do over the top like witches! The amount of snobbery and sarcasm thrown at each other was very invigorating. I loved the barbs exchanged, how Sy finally stood up for himself and came into his own. And while that happened his mate Dakar was dragging! There is always something he either misunderstands or takes the wrong way. I mean alpha wolf reared for a position of power should have some semblance of a brain but it seems to leave Dakar in every crucial moment of the book hence a lot more drama than it should have been. But I loved it anyway.

Brock and Brad, secondary characters and mutual friends, added the 'Awww' moment to the book and had some input with Dakar and his messes! I liked how they banded together against those who wished them bad. The S*E*X was steamy and I enjoyed reading the scenes of Dakar and Sy together.

All in all it was a wonderful read for me. The action, the magic, dead talking and lots of witty and sarcastic conversations! It just hit the spot!!! I can't wait to read what Lisa comes up with in the next and final book in the series! I bet it will be spectacular!

I liked this one. It did keep me reading long after I should have gone to bed.

I love Sy and feel for him. He has a crappy family who spent the whole book trying to force him to their will with no concern for what he wanted. Actually the way most the magic users are portrayed in this one as pompous individuals says a lot about magic users. At least he has Brock growing up so he was shown love and attention.

I also love Brock and it was great to see him get a chance with his mate Brad. They make a great couple, can’t wait to see where this leads.

I thought I’d was good that the mates have to work on their relationships, it doesn’t come easy and feelings get hurt until it’s able to the talked out.

Again Dakar was my issue in this one. I like him as a character but there are times I want to hit him over the head. He is the shifter who understands about true mates, but all he is is jealous. He needs to get his head out of his butt.

The addition of Sy’s grandfather was fun, can’t wait to see him again.

I liked this book almost as much as I did the first one in the series. In fact, a friend lent me her copy and I liked it enough to buy my own copy of the book. I liked that we not only got to see more of Sy and Dakar but more of Brock and Brad also. Another thing I liked was the conflict between Dakar and Sy. I thought it a nice change to read about a mate pair where it wasn’t all sunshine and roses once the mating occurred. That being said, there were times that I really wanted to shake Dakar and tell him to get his act together.

I think my biggest complaint with the book is the use of the rotten parent trope. It has been done to death. Along with the whole you must mate the women of my choosing trope. I think I would have liked a little something more original. That being said, I still enjoyed the story a lot and am looking forward to the next one in the series.

How much do I hate Sy's parents, let me count the ways. So in this addition, dear old Dad is in town & with Sy's betrothed. Yes you heard me right, his female fiance. No matter how much Sy tries to tell them that he has absolutely no interest in her from either a female side or the very fact that he is mated to his true mate Dakar, his dad is pushing for this marriage. It appears that their fathers signed a marriage agreement without discussing the facts with Sy. Sy's dad still believes that Sy is a no talent, weak person as well as a weak necromancer. He never believed that Sy had any power. So while Sy is fighting that front, something is happening on Dakar's side of things. He is now being extremely nasty to Sy and saying the most horrible things. I'm glad the issue was figured out fairly quickly and didn't drag on. Even though it isn't really Dakar's fault, he still should have done some groveling. He should have fought harder. I'm so glad that Brock finds his mate. That was awesome. Plus we find out more about Brock, he really is more then he seems. I am saddened that there is only one more book in this series but I am glad that I have it so I can get right into it without a long wait.

I was hoping for more from this book. Mostly I wanted Dakar to not be such an idiot in this book. I thought he'd finally gotten his head out of his ass in the first book but it doesn't take long before he is acting like a complete jerk. . I would have so much rather the conflict had been more external with the two working together instead of what happened. I love Sy's character but I'm not a fan of Dakar. Not sure I'll bother reading the 3rd book.

Magic users are pretty horrible people...

Wow, Sy's patents really are horrible beings. I imagine that Sy's grandfather had to have had his heart broken as he watched Seymore make continuously worse choices. I also thought it was interesting that Seymore never would have been the Necromancer if his father hadn't gifted part of his life force to Brock.

It's hard to see how this is all going to be resolved in just one more book, but I'll definitely be reading it when it comes out!

Wonderful and funny

I loved this book. Hot men, evil parents, scheming women up to no good. I highly recommend this book and series to those who enjoy good stories, men who love men, and magical mayhem.

I didn't like this book as much as I liked the first one. It started out great, but the issue with Dakar's change in behavior felt manufactured and unnecessary. I liked where the couple made it to in the first book. It would have made a stronger story to keep the couple close and let outside conflict shape the story instead of inventing a situation that put distance in when they are still new and figuring things out.

Also Sy's parents were a bit over the top. I understand their place as antagonists or possibly even villains, but it crossed over into cheesy excess.

I think this story had so much potential. I love the world building and I think the series is worth reading even if I didn't care for this second book much.

Whole Series Review:

Classic Lisa Oliver, high plot drama, high trashy shenanigans, awful communication among the couple, amazing side characters and all the fun 😂

Not my favourite of her series but still a fun and fast read!

There was bit a lot of excitement. Anything bad was figured out quickly and a solution found almost immediately. That’s all I have to say about the boring and ordinary plot.

So sexist. Women have almost no magical power and the areas they do are not respected in the book, like working being a botanist. During a mild magic match, someone is told to pull the women away. A father is ordered **by a good guy** to get his adult daughter married off as soon as possible before the “bun in her oven” was visible. She uses her naked body to control the men.

There was way too much talking. The father was too unhinged for someone who had been so powerful politically and there was too much talking in proving he was wrong. There was lots of talk about things in the past and the talk between friends and in the bedroom in particular was way too formal.

But there was no talk about anything important which was the foundation for the third chapter. There the drama was idiotic and made no sense. The epilogue was almost as bad and completely unnecessary.

There was a cliffhanger bit in the epilogue which was something which would normally get me to read on but two awful books in a row have me saying no.

The reader was fine. The voices were okay but some of the pronunciations were really weird like coven and oregano. I blame it on regionalisms but these were Americans and I’ve never heard these weird things so I don’t know where from. I’ve lived in and been throughout Canada and haven’t heard them there either. The info about the book at the end had him saying “been” like “bean” so it’s got to be natural for him.

I loved it

This series is so thrilling, I'm really enjoying it. Sy's grandfather is hilarious, I hope that he's in the next book too. I know that Sy and Daker are the main characters, but with it being a trilogy about them I would have liked to see things from Brad and Brock's POV too. Not for them to take over the book but it'd be great to see how they interact together when they are alone. The same with Clive and Conner and other secondary characters, because it's a trilogy I think it'd be good to see things from their perspective instead of just Daker and Sy.
The last chapter was great. Because Lisa gets her books out so fast the cliffhanger is exciting because I know I'll get to find out what's going on soon. Also, it's more of a sneak peek of the next book instead of a cliffhanger because the main issues from this book were resolved in this book.
I can't wait for book 3, I really wish it wasn't the last book though.

This series is beyond outstanding! Sy and Dakar have trouble and hot sex!

Oh my, where do I start? This second book fulfilled all my expectations and has me clamoring for more! Sy and Dakar’s problems are just beginning with the arrival of Sy’s father and his fiancé — just WOW for starting out with a bang. Here I thought that after the first book, Sy and Dakar would have a chance to learn more about each other and settle into being mated. But no Lisa Oliver has to throw us into the deep end of the pool and along with Sy and Dakar we’re swimming for our lives!

I honestly think that Lisa Oliver should revise her thoughts about this being a 3 book series! This being said without having read the 3rd book (hasn’t been published yet, sigh) because I could see so many more stories with Sy and Dakar. Please Lisa Oliver, am on my knees begging!

I m enjoying this trilogy very much. Book 2 was better than book 1 for me because we had some relationship angst. Sy being so powerful, them being fated mates and Dakar being protected from head to tow doesn t leave much room for them to get hurt physically or emotionally and since I enjoy drama/ angst and some hurt and comfort I was expecting this to be pretty tame in those regards. The author found ways to get around that and even though I can imagine how strong Dakar's puppy dog eyes were he would have deserved a few days of him begging Sy to come back from his grandfather's. Speakig of... I sure hope we see more of Sy's grandfather in book 3, he was hilarious and fun and adores Sy and Brock.

Now I have to wait to see what happens

As with first book there is plenty of storylines both good and bad but you meet some interesting people Sy's parents and the intended bride and her family and boy are they a dosey. Most of the book is about a plot to force Sy to marry the women who his father had made and arranged marriage so he could get custody of any grandchildren and the estate and title from Sy. Plus there so many more you will meet and see how they are handled and put back in their places one person who really like was the deceased grandfather he is a character not to be messed with. And finally you meet Dakar family who is totally the opposite of Sy family sweet, charming and very loving people.
So all I can say hang on there more to arrive in book 3

Pretty bad

If you want to read a novel about twinky necromancer's artificial and repetitive family drama this one is for you. Author decided to make villains brain dead, impossibly stupid and obnoxious. I think this book would go better as full on romance, with Sy as a woman, at least then there could be some hair puling and screaming. I don't get it why authors always want to write about necromancers and then portray them as whimpering fools. What's up with disabled 70yo man child? You made a powerful character so u decided to disable him in every possible way so he can fit in with big bad alfa, who is still being threatened even by that castrated excuse for a man? First book was bearable beacuse of the semi plot going on there, but this one was just.... ugh...

I find nearly the same issues and thoughts with this one as the first. It is perfectly fine brain candy. Entertaining if not well developed (neither the world or characters). Nothing really stands out as good or bad. At times it leans toward a little cheesy. But good for those days you are in the mood for a lazy read. My biggest complaint was, in the rush to get published there were multiple plot holes and at times confusing timeliness. A good example that isn't a spoiler would be when we are told a character can make a point simply by cutting his hand to show he bleeds. But then, that is never done. That is just one of many I could list.

The plot was ok but the sexism was a little too much at some point.
The female characters are all stupid and awful, then Dakar's mother shows up, a positive character but also stereotyped, a noisy disrespectful woman who loves to cook, so any kitchen is hers. Really?
All the couples that are formed are M-M, and then the French father resents his marriage because it bonded him to a woman that gave him a daughter (another woman), both problematic because they are women and that's the reason of what was happening.
I've never read such a sexist M-M book before, and I have read quite a few. It was a shock the author was a woman. Some self-hatred issues.

Brilliant!

This is an interesting and very thoughtful continuation of Sy and Dakar's newly established relationship and upon reading about Sy's family, who needs enemies!

There is deception, violence and hatred along with a little detective work, which all combined makes this a really good read.

Whilst it's not a stand alone, it is a complete story in itself, so get reading the first if you haven't yet and get yourself caught up ahead of the final instalment, which personally, I am very much looking forward to!

I was really enjoying this book until the end. Dakar and Sy haven't been mated very long so problems are sure to arise. however, I don't like how the author Lisa Oliver has made Dakar out to be so self important in this book after putting so much effort into building a character that is all for his mate until now suddenly.
I will read the next book in the series but hope Lisa doesn't follow the same trend the Dakar is always hurting his mate somehow and Sy is never called out on the ways he hurts his mate.

Oh god. This book was simply amazing. It was beautiful and loving and heartbreaking, but it was beautiful. I love this author and I love how she made this a trilogy. I just hope in the final book they get their happy ending. I love Dakar and St and Brock and Brad. I just love this author and all of her books.

Absolutely delightful

A very fun, often silly, continuation of Dakar and Sy’s great romance. Sy’s family causes havoc, and not even True Mates are immune to relationship issues. Lisa Oliver has become an auto-buy author with stories and characters that deliver on romance and fun.

Great reading

The story kept you in suspense through the whole story trying figure out what was going to happen next. Sy's father and mother were some of the most hateful people , and verbally abusive I've seen. I would have just done away with them all. Looking forward to the last book and hoping to find out what his grandfather meant about St having offspring.

Sy's parents are evil schemers who don't choose to engage with consensual reality. Sy and Dakar have a lot of trouble with them and their allies. I found the book entertaining, though the comments I made about the punctuation, grammar, etc. issues in the first book still apply. If you can more or less ignore those technical flaws, the protagonists and Brock are cool.
