Night Terror, the greatest villain Starlight City has ever known, is having a bad day.
Her super powered girlfriend? Shoved through a portal and stranded on a strange and dangerous alien world.
Her archnemesis? Dead of an unfortunate torture accident. Before she could tell Night Terror how to reach that strange and dangerous alien world to mount a rescue mission.
Her city? Under attack by a race of parasitic alien worms pulling an invasion of the body snatchers with the local cat population in a nefarious but adorable plot to conquer the world!
Yeah, that's not happening on her home turf. The only problem? The more she brings the fight to ET the more heroic she looks!
It turns out it's hard to maintain villain cred while flying around the city saving the day. Even if it is saving the day in the name of beating the crap out of an enemy trying to muscle in on her territory!
Searching for her lost girlfriend. Saving the world from the cutest alien invasion ever. Trying to maintain a nefarious image despite repeatedly getting caught in heroic photo ops. No one ever said being a villain would be easy!
I'm Not A Hero! is a lesbian scifi superhero novel that continues exploring the world of villains, antiheroes, and heroes first introduced in Villains Don't Date Heroes! This is the start of a new storyline which means you don't need to read the previous books, but it helps!
I was interested in the storyline and wanted to know what happens, but the only way i made it through was by skimming and skipping massive portions of annoying repetition and internal monologue. I still want to know what happens in the next books, but only if crib notes come out for them. So many other great books i need to read...
I'M NOT A HERO is the fourth volume of the Night Terror books and changes the genre of the series. Prior to this novel, it was mostly a lesbian romance series based around a superheroine falling in love with a supervillain. Starting with this volume, it moves to becoming a more traditional superhero series with comedic elements (albeit not many). Filaux has been banished to another dimension and the villain Night Terror (a female Lex Luthor/Doctor Doom type who dresses in a sexy bodysuit) is left mourning her.
However, she's got things to occupy her with the fact a race of parasitic mind-worms (yes, like in THE WRATH OF KHAN that is cited many times) are possessing adorable kitties to take over the city! What follows is Night Terror versus the feline menace as the city watches this bizarre spectacle take place. I really enjoyed this even if I wanted the two main characters to reconcile.
The pop culture references were extra funny and KITTIES!
Night Terror is one of my favorite characters in any series by any author that I've read over the past few years. An anti-hero with a heart of gold, that she stole from a bank vault along with other items placed there by crooked politicians, crime bosses, and corrupt business men. LOL!
In this story, we get to see how she deals with the one thing she never expected to face: the loss of the love of her life... Selena, better known to the world at large as Fialux, is gone. Thrust through a portal into a radioactive wasteland by her archnemesis, Dr. Lana, and, due to an unfortunate... accident... the bad doctor is no longer available to tell her the location that portal was pointed to, if Selena could even survive this long in that place... So... yeah... we're pretty much looking at a super-villain suffering from a bout of depression here.
To make matters worse, something came the other way through that portal. A parasitic alien that infects cute, fluffy kitties and is trying to take over the planet! Only Night Terror can stop them, with the help of her evil supercomputer sidekick, CORVAC, with whom she recently reunited and came to an agreement to not try to kill each other anymore... at least for now.
This volume of the series continues the trend of Night Terror being portrayed in a heroic light in the media, which is entirely the point of the title. It introduces a "new" character, or at least gives her a name: the news anchor, Nancy Norris, who was previously stated to be one of Natalie's former "Surviving a Heroic Intervention" students from her gig as a university professor and may just be too bright for her own good... or at least for Night Terror's.
The action and intrigue aspect of this story is fantastic, with Night Terror and CORVAC going toe-to-paw with an enemy that is tougher than it appears at first glance. In a lot of ways, though, I felt that a lot of the story was about Natalie coming to grips with the potential loss of Selena. She misses things and makes mistakes. She is unfocused when she normally would be on point. In short, she's depressed. By the end of the story, she seems to have come around and is doing better... then...
WOW! What an ending!!! I just CANNOT WAIT for the next book and the one after that!!!!!!
I gave this a 3, even though I would've given a 3.5 if I could've because yeah it was better than okay, but at the same time, it had some bads for me. Some worse than bads, even. The good part was the ending, and me being an honest person(sometimes brutally honest) I'll admit that this wasn't Mia Archer's best when it comes to this lovely Night Terror and Fialux series. The good part is in knowing this ending will lead us into the next book of Fialux and Night Terror (which I knew that Night Terror's actual name was Natalie, but I had forgotten that Fialux's real name was Selena since they use their secret names so much, but I think Selena is sexy). I would suggest reading this if you really love Night Terror, but if you're like me and rather like seeing Night Terror with Fialux together for the duration of the books then maybe just skip this and wait until the next book comes out. Also, I'm hoping there is a nice love scene between the two characters in the next book (even if Night Terror keeps saying she's not, she's saved the day countless times, so she needs to at least admit she's an anti-hero). The author has hinted that they've done "things" in her lab, but I want to actually read about how passionate their sex life is.
Wonderful and wonderfully disturbing at times this latest outing of Night Terror is the best one yet! Her slow begrudging march away from villainy towards heroism is a fun time and that ending! I have to say, it hadn't been that long since Fialux was thrown to the other world, Night Terror was too ready to give up hope and that annoyed me. If her and Fialux don't kiss and kiss some more and make up I will be endlessly frustrated. Infinitely so. Luckily it seems I'll only have to wait roughly a month to find out! Luckily, as Mia was quick to point out, this is the start of a new arc, so it's good to start with, but I still say reading through the Villains Don't trilogy first would be a good idea.
I wanted to give this the full five-stars. I really really did. I love these stories (maybe a little too much) and was fully prepared for another 5-star review.
Then I got to the end and suddenly Night Terror had the hots for another woman. About 30 seconds after giving up on Fialux. This is the first fumble I've seen from this author, in regards to character building. Night Terror hadn't dated much at all before meeting Fialux. Those two went through hell. To have her both give up and move on in the space of a kindle-sized page kicked me right out of the story.
Now reading "I'm Not A Villain!" Hopefully it will get the five-star treatment!
This is a well written fourth book in the "Night Terror" series, featuring the villainess turned reluctant hero, Night Terror, as she battles alien forces invading her city. Meanwhile, she wonders if Fialux, the real hero, could possibly survive the radiation of the alien world she was shoved through a portal into. This is an enjoyable lesbian scifi adventure series that should be on your must read list.
This reader is interested in the overall story arc of the series, but this is not an especially illuminating entry. Very repetitive in many places as if the objective was to create enough word count to call the result a book. Since Fialux was not present until the very end, the relationship between the main characters did not develop at all.
I still enjoyed it, although not as much as the previous books in the series. The relationship between Night Terror and Fialux was one of the attractive points of the story, and this book has none of that, until the very end, and it appears Fialux has turned evil now? Ok… we’ll have to see what’s up with that….
A villain constantly forced into being a hero, who constantly references scifi pop culture, an army of possessed cats trying to take over the world. What more could you ask for. Except the next book as soon as possible.
I read the previous books in this series, and enjoyed them primarily because of the interaction between Fialux and Night Terror. This book, however, contains almost no Fialux, and you should be aware of that fact before you buy it.
Is it horrible that the end to this book hurt my heart?
I know it's a plot twist to mess with me and make me want to read the other book...and I shall but awe... Maaaannnnnnn. That's it. Worth. Readin next book now.
Great series, although less romance in this one (missing girlfriend makes it hard) but the plot makes up for it. The ending comes right out of left field and I cannot wait until #5 to see where Mia Archer takes it. If you are a super hero/villain fan I recommend this series
