He is like a livewire, filled with a supernatural energy he has always struggled to control. Alexander is also the son to the wealthy and privileged family who lives in seclusion in the small town.

Cara is struggling with some unusual side effects from a recent illness. When she and Alex, the mysterious town heartthrob meet, more than sparks of attraction will fly as their powers both attract and repel each other. Now Alex must help Cara learn to understand and control the powers she has been given. Neither expected the emotional bond that would grow between the rich “player “ and the small town girl who was as innocent and down to earth as she was charming.
When Cara’s abilities are sought by an evil entity, they will find that even all of the protection that Alex’s family could buy will not be enough to keep her safe.

FIRE IN ICE by Jennifer DiGiovanni is a slightly different twist on supernatural abilities with a slow burning romance between two teens that makes for a wonderful read and a solid start for a new series, The Generators. Written for a young adult audience, there are great supporting characters of all ages, a realistic feel as the characters interact with one another!

Easy to follow, just enough tension to move the story along fabulously and of course, the villain who hides in the shadows to make his move!

Cara became sick out of the blue, so sick she had to go to the hospital. it appears she had picked up a rare, very serious bug but was able to beat it- with just a remaining side effect of headaches...she thinks. Alex has lived his whole life knowing what he was capable of, being pushed by his family to be more when all he wanted was to have a chance at being normal. When he is given the task to speak to Alex about her disease and strange blood work, he has no expectations of finding someone else like him. But he was wrong.

I will admit that I spent at least a third of this book being a little bit confused. The author jumps right into the paranormal gifts and expectations from Alex as if it was given, and let me tell you, it was not. I was waiting for more to come to fill me in, but it did not really happen until a 100 pages or so in and by that point I was not really invested in the book. I liked the characters and the dynamic between them, the forbidden love, the opposites attract thing, but the paranormal aspects were not interesting to me. I felt like I kind of brushed over it because it made no sense to me to get to the drama that is teen love.

This was very much so a paranormal romance. Sure there was some mystery, action and suspense, but at the heart of the book was love. (As a side note, Alex wants to be with Cara because she is attractive and supernatural which makes his life easier with his secret, that that he knows ANYTHING about her as a person- if that is not romance, what is?)Everything led to the two main characters being together, the pull of their unknown bond, the angst and love, as well as the logistics of being famous and in the spotlight. All the pieces were put together nicely and I did enjoy the ending, even if it was a little bumpy for me to get there.

I am voluntarily reviewing a complimentary copy of this book.

DNF at 11%. Drat! I am really disappointed. I had high hopes for this one, but the prose is too amateurish for me, and then he attempts to gaslight her rather than begin to reveal what they are, and that is just too much to ask. This begs for another edit pass by someone who knows what they're doing. YA and 'new adult' in particular should require excellent editing. These books are where we learn what good writing is.

''Fire and Ice follows the story of Cara Scotto an apparently normal teenager, struggling with the lingering side effects of an unknown disease. And Alex DeMarsh, apparently the typical rich boy, that guards a very supernatural secret.
Okay, so, conflicted feelings about this book.
While the story is entertaining and well structured, I found that the writing lacked a bit of deepness. It moved too quickly, characters lock gazes for the first time and they’re already feeling their skin electrified or trusting each other like they’re the best of friends.''

Received from Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for honest review

Fire and Ice bring together two polar opposites. Alexander DeMarsh is insanely rich and unhappy on break from school. He has special super power, producing energy. And Cara, who had mysterious illness, of witch she still feels effects. She instantly peeks his interest, but he doesn't tell her why right away. Her illness might be something very different.

I loved the first part of the book, slowly uncovering secrets with Cara. She is very good character. In the second part I had trouble connecting to the story.

I wish there was more about the power itself in the book, it's very intriguing concept.

Fast-paced and a nice twist on superhero powers.

Cara is a smart girl who doesn't carry much baggage and enjoys life and high school, while, of course, looking forward to the day she graduates. When she suddenly becomes ill and lands in the hospital with a rare disease, her life takes a massive turn. Although she's soon back on her feet, she feels like she's constantly on overdrive. To add to the stress, the famous son of the richest family in town is back for Winter break and, for only heaven knows which reasons, seems to be stalking her. Not only that, but there's something strange about him. As Cara finds herself pulled into an unbelievable life, she begins to wonder if she can trust Alex or not.

This is a nice read. It packs all the wonderfulness of the drama of a YA romance, rolls it in layers of dark secrets, and tops it off with amazing and developing superpowers. Cara is a great character. While uncertain and a little naive at times, she also packs a good amount of self-esteem and doesn't let anyone push her around. Her lack of baggage in the beginning is refreshing and makes her easy to connect to—just an average girl.

The explanation behind the superpowers and the 'civil war' surrounding it aren't really explained with much detail. Even the full extent of what each person can really do is left foggy around the edges. While this does leave many questions open, it doesn't really hurt this first book. There are many things still left to be explained, but much of this will probably appear in the rest of the series. As it is, the reader learns with Cara and the concentration remains on her own struggle to discover the beginning layers of her emerging powers and the new world it's opening up to.

There are dark secrets and layers of intrigue, and while the 'true' evil man only takes a backseat in this first book, there are enough secrets and questions to make the initial question of who to trust strong enough to carry this plot. Each character carries their own agenda and history, which adds a nice amount of depth. And there is a completely unexpected twist or two.

And there's romance. Of course. It hits with a 'love at first sight' and rounds it off with the roughness of mistrust and discovery. It's not completely smooth but works okay. Cara's initial boyfriend comes across great in the beginning. Alex's appearance drives in a rather sudden, not completely explainable, break-up, which left with a remaining kink. This whole side still needs more time in the upcoming series too. Which means there's tons to come in the next books, and if they're anything like this first one, they'll be entertaining reads.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed it enough to want to leave my honest thoughts.

I couldn’t put Fire in Ice, by Jennifer DiGiovanni, down. It’s a quick, fun, read with excitement and romance intertwined with moments of great tension and irony created by a he said/she said duality.

The book dives right into the action with Cara Scotto being severely ill and waking up with strange new powers. Alex DeMarsh, a rich celebrity type, returns from prep school for winter break to instantly realize the little Cara he vaguely remembered from childhood has grown up to be hot and exactly like him, a Generator. The headstrong Cara must come to terms with being a supernatural being, gifted through her ancestry to be able generate and manipulate energy. Alex must teach her to control her energy, hide it from everyone, and he must protect her from their kind’s enemies. Only neither of them plans on the feelings that surge between them, both supernatural and natural. Tensions and dangers arise, and it becomes unclear whether they can make it together or even stay alive at all.

At first, the narrative seemed a little too clean cut for me, without some of the detailed descriptions one longs for in a book, but the quick to the point pacing proved it to be a page turner and I enjoyed the quick chapters and plot. The dual point of view switching between the Alex and Cara is what made this book amazing. I love when narratives overlap slightly so it creates this rich irony of misunderstandings only the reader is privy to. This is often difficult to do in first person while making the characters unique but DiGiovanni makes it happen. Cara is headstrong, insecure at times, and untrusting. Alex is used to the limelight but is resentful of playing a part and deep down is lonely. Frankly, he is adorably cheeky and irresistible.

Overall, this novel has some familiar tropes, like the hot rich guy meets the headstrong girl and must introduce her to his supernatural world, but it felt unique and well told due to the point of view, strong characters, and a fast plot that leaves you wanting more. And with it being a series, readers will get exactly that.

Thoughts and Plot

Cara Scotto is a happy, clever, generally realistic teenage girl looking forward to getting out of school when she falls ill with a rare disease. Cara catches the eyes of Alexander De Marsh, a wealthy playboy who secretly has the ability to create electricity. Alex is home from prep school when he sees Cara, noticing that she has grown up quite well from the young girl he used to know.
Cara, it turns out, is also a Generator, like Alex. Knowing this, Alex starts talking to her, taking her under his wing to teach her how to control and hide her powers while he attempts to shield her from their enemies.
At first Cara is put off by the sudden attention of popular-with-the-ladies Alex. Cara is wary and strong willed. Alex must actually work to get into her good graces before their relationship starts to take roots and grow.
What I liked about this book was the slightly new spin on a classic ‘teens developing superpowers.’ The main characters were decently developed, support characters were fleshed out enough to not feel like they were just tossed in there. A relationship that is literally built from the ground up between Alex and Cara was refreshing (too much insta-love). The dialogue was relatively clean language wise and you get to see Cara as a realistic teenage girl who just so happens to develop a superpower (literally) in a world that is not so accepting of people who are ‘different.’
What could have used a little polishing was the pacing at the beginning of the book. I resisted the urge to skim through a bit. Also, a little more attention to detail when describing things would have really made this book ‘pop’ into a reader’s head better.

Conclusion

All in all, this was an interesting read about teens that share a common superpower. Said teens figuring out said superpower, their relationship, and how to survive in a world that isn’t exactly friendly towards them because of their ability.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibraian – I Dig Good Books

This was a great book! It was a true start to finish, well written story.
I was really surprised with this story. It was an attention grabber from the start to the finish. Some parts were more exciting than others, but other parts were more intriguing than others. There really wasn’t a time that was boring nor was there a time that the story was “skim through” worthy. It is a story you’ll want to read from the first word to the last word.
Details and descriptions were great. They were written in such a manner that you didn’t ever guess what was going on in the story, but also never overdone. This story wasn’t filled with “extras” that just padded the word count. It painted a detailed picture, easy to visualize, and easy to keep playing in your mind.
I loved the fantasy portion of this story. It’s always fun to me to read a story that is fantasy but isn’t so far into the fantasy genre that it’s unimaginable. While I realize it was fake, it was still fun to think about.
The characters were great! They meshed well and were characters that you’d want to know. If they were real, they would be the type of people I’d like to hang out with and get to know. I’d love to read more about them in future stories.
Overall, an absolutely incredible read. It was fast paced, easy to follow, and one that held my attention. I recommend this book without a second guess.

I received a free review copy of this book and am very glad, as I liked it quite a lot overall.
Positives (which far outweigh the negatives):
1) Storyline: Intriguing and different take on supernatural powers with twists and an interesting world.
2) Characters: Great central relationship, well-developed, with lots of seriously swoony moments - and based on not just good looks but personality and deep understanding, which is so refreshing and genuine. Well developed and interesting side-characters. All of the characters felt three-dimensional and you get to know more about them as the story progresses.
3) Writing: minimal and very mild bad language, which again was refreshing.
Negatives:
1) It began a bit slow - I actually skimmed some parts as I found them a bit boring, but the interesting parts were great and came more and more until they were thick and fast and I was engrossed.
2) Descriptions weren't as vivid as I'd like - I couldn't "see" the surroundings or feel like I was there as much as some books, but not bad.
3) There was a possible girl-girl relationship, which for me as a Christian would be contrary to my conscience, but it wasn't clear and definitely underplayed if it was there.
So, overall very enjoyable and I'm really keen to read the next book! :D

If Cara thought it was weird she had gotten the attention of Alex, the richest, cutest boy in Amber Lea than when she found out they had something major in common it threw her for a major loop. You see they are both Generators and when Alex found out he decided to take Cara under his wing, whether she wanted to accept she wasn’t normal or not.
This is not your typical love story. Alex has to fight Cara for her attention. His lady mans reputation doesn’t do much to put him in her good graces. Little by little Cara comes to trust Alex and it’s a great read to see their relationship blossom as it does.
Never a dull moment is to be seen in this story. You will truly enjoy reading and experiencing Cara coming into her power all while falling for the “bad boy” of Amber Lea! Reviewed by Danielle

Fire in Ice was a fantastic read. The romance, along with the supernatural side of things, felt real and believable. The push and pull of the characters' relationship expertly melded the feeling of that first love with the hard truths of high school life, while keeping the reader swept up into a supernatural race with a faceless bad guy.

Overall, the novel was a fun and easy read. Perfect for a busy teen or a young adult looking to burn through a great story. I would totally recommend it to anyone looking for a taste of the supernatural in their life.

I loved this book! It was a fun adventure with Cara learning about her superpowers and dealing with the boy who's trying to teach her about them. The main characters, Cara and Alex, were well-grounded within their families, had normal teen reactions to things, and a lot of swoony moments. The sparks do fly! There was also intrigue and bad guys and supportive best friends and fight scenes. A great read. :D

I received a paperback book and the right margin wasn't justified. That made this hard to read. Main reason for giving it a three.

It's a young adult book but the main characters drink alcohol. Yep, I know that's realistic, however, I don't believe it should be in Young Adult fiction unless its to teach a lesson.

This book was relatable and it had the perfect balance of teenager and school life and supernatural conflicts.
The villain was a convincing character. I felt very scared for Cara.
Chapter thirty one was inspirational because girls were able to stand up to terrible boys which isn’t always the case in a lot of situations. The author showed that girls can be tough and can fight back.
The superpowers in the book were so different from what you usually see in a superhero book. They are all about the energy that the super humans contain and the energy that they can sense in other people. The fact that energy could pass through one person to the other allowed Cara and Alex to work together on their powers and bond.
