The Haunting of Timber Manor

Rate this book
While recovering from the recent loss of his parents, Daniel Donnelly receives a phone call from his estranged aunt, who turns over control of the family fortune and estate, Timber Manor. Though his father seemed guarded about the past, Daniel’s need for family and curiosity compel him to visit.

Located in a secluded area of the Northwest, Timber Manor has grown silent over the years. Her halls sit empty and a thin layer of dust adorns the sheet-covered furniture. When Daniel arrives to begin repairs, strange things happen. Nightmares haunt his dreams. Memories not his own disturb his waking hours. Alive with the tragedies of the past, Timber Manor threatens to tear Daniel apart.

Sherriff Hale Davis grew up working on the manor grounds. Seeing Daniel struggle, he vows protect the young man who captured his heart, and help him solve the mystery behind the haunting and confront the past—not only to save Daniel’s life, but to save his family, whose very souls hang in the balance.

Damn good ghost story! It was genuinely creepy, wonderfully atmospheric and I enjoyed all the characters. Hale and Daniel were realistic and their connection was warm and tender. If you can discount the insta-love, which I forgave because I enjoyed everything else.

If I have one negative, it was all the flashbacks to the past. I understood what the author was doing, and mostly it was things you needed to see to understand where the story was in the now but there was an awful lot of time spent in the past. The plot moved much better in the present day. Still, I very much enjoyed this first story for me by FE Feeley Jr and am looking forward to more.

Thanks again to boggartbub for the terrific book! 😊

3,5 stars!

For a debut novel F.E.Feeley jr. did really a good job keeping my attention on the story from the first till the very last page. I had some tiny problems with the plot but maybe because PRN is not my typical genre.

The writing

If I have to describe in one word the writing style of F.E.Feeley jr. I would use comfortable. It was like sitting in your favourite armchair, drinking your favourite drink and admiring a nice view from your window. Even if there were some creepy events and angry ghost fooling around I have never lost this comfort feeling while reading about the haunted house.

The book is far from a grisly tale of ghosts. I don't watch horrors and I don't read horrors. For me it was a kind of positive aspect, but I just want to warn those readers who prefer the books that make one's blood freezes. It is not.

It is a first person's POV, my favourite way of telling.

The story

Daniel Donnelly, 23 years old, lost his parents in a boat accident and take an invitation from his aunt to spend time with her at the birth place of his father. Tiber Manor is a name of the family property outside a small town of Emerson. Daniels farther left his home many years ago and never came back. There was family's secrets behind but he had never spoken to his son about.

So, Tiber Manor, is a main scene for everything that had happened in the book. And I'm not going to ruin a pleasure for you and give anything away. Tiber Mannor is also the place where Daniel met Hale Davis, the local sheriff. The romance between them was sweet and sex scenes were good written,

All in all- a very enjoyable read from a very promising author.

For all fans of PRN and not only.

Recommended!

What an excellent ghost story! Incredibly creative, with tons of unexpected twists and turns, I enjoyed every minute of F.E. Feeley Jr.'s The Haunting of Timber Manor.

I listened to the audio version. The narrator, Tony Stone, has great enthusiasm and uses a tremendous variety of different voices for this diverse cast of characters. They've included some clever sound effects, which helps to increase the drama and dark atmosphere.

If you're in the mood for a chilling story, with excellent family drama, then The Haunting of Timber Manor will fit the bill!

RECENSIONE QUI: https://thereadingslove.blogspot.com/...

description

Daniel is mourning the sudden loss of his parents when he receives a phone call from his father's sister... a woman he's never met. When she asks him to come visit her in the Northwest, he does so because she is his only living relative. When he arrives at the family estate, Timber Manor, he is unprepared for what is there awaiting him. Not only must he awkwardly get to know an aunt he doesn't remember but he must stay in a home that is obviously haunted. Within days of his arrival, his aunt is turning over the family fortune to him because she is ill (though Daniel does not learn this particular fact until much later). He meets the local sheriff, Hale, and a friendship quickly develops between the two men. This friendship grows into much more rather quickly. Daniel has crazy dreams from his first night at the estate. Then strange things happen in the house that cannot be reasonably explained. When his aunt brings in workmen to work on the house, the strange things turn dangerous. Daniel and Hale must fight against unknown forces just to survive. Daniel must first learn the history of the estate and his family in order to do this. The way this is done... and the way everything comes together was written perfectly.

This is told in alternating points of view. Granted, that can be confusing at times but I found that it made the story much more interesting. The reader actually goes into the mind of the entity that is haunting Timber Manor.

Overall, this is an outstanding book that kept me reading much later than I should have. Once I got involved, I did not want to put my Kindle down. This is a great ghost story with an even better romance thrown in. I fell in love with all of the characters (even the creepy ghost) and I was very pleased with how everything came together at the end.

Wow, I wish there were more paranormal books of this vein in the m/m sub-genre. We see a lot of vampire and werewolf stories, but I can't recall many good ghost stories. The Haunting of Timber Manor is about Danny, who discovers he's the heir of a family fortune. He travels to Oregon to meet his aunt, who bestows upon him her enormous estate. Aunt Carol is dying of cancer and doesn't have long to live.

After moving in, Danny finds love when a romance blossoms with the local sheriff, Hale. And he begins to learn that his new home has a very creepy history. Strange things begin happening, and Danny gradually pieces together the mystery of Timber Manor and must fight to combat a malevolent ghost that hates Danny's family and is hellbent on revenge.

The story is presented in an unconventional manner, using the first person narrative from multiple points of view. It took me a bit to adjust to this, and I wondered if perhaps third person limited would have been a more logical choice.

But I really enjoyed the story and found the protagonist to be sympathetic and endearing. The love story was very sweet, and I especially appreciated the way Hale was so protective of vulnerable Danny.

Can't wait to read more from this author.

F. E. Feeley, Jr. is a new author for me, but I'll be reading more. "The Haunting of Timber Manor" is a sort of classic gothic novel ghost story of a type that makes me think of Hollywood B-films from the 1950s - but at its heart is a sweet, moving gay love story that won me over completely.

Daniel's disorientation is central to the narrative, from the moment the book opens with his driving blind in a torrential downpour as he approaches Timber Manor for the first time. It is a classic "Dark Shadows" set up. The typical weather patterns of an Oregon summer create the setting for the sprawling mansion of the Donnelly family. Daniel is a young man yanked off the steady path he's made for himself by tragic circumstances. Having not had time to grieve properly, he doesn't fully understand why he's been invited to visit his father's only surviving relative. He's confused, lost, and desperately in need of some stability in his young life. And, out of the rain and darkness steps the proverbial knight in shining armor - Hale, local sheriff, well-liked but lonely. Yes, it is almost corny, but I have to say that the development of the relationship between these two guys, as the increasingly horrific back-story of Timber Manor unfolds around them, is one of the nicest things I've read recently.

Yes, this is a pretty predictable story arc, but what a fun story it is. Rather late in the game we meet Francine, the carnival fortune-teller who not only is more than she seems, but instantly sees Daniel and Hale as two guys who need what she has to offer. Francine's back story comes into the book rather late, but is told so well that I regretted the fact that she doesn't appear more in the book than her pivotal role allows.

And, finally, I have to say, that I love a man who write men who cry. A man who can cry is the sexiest thing on earth for me, and somehow Feeley (who, by his own description is a big tough tattooed man) writes these guys really well...

Wow wow wow.

I love a good suspense and this was so fun. Ghosts and hauntings and wolves. Things going bump in the night.

This story was told through many different POV's which actually added to the overall experience. I found myself getting sucked in to the mystery, sweetened by the romance and anxious for the HEA.

The writing was very descriptive and foreboding, keeping the reader/listener on the edge of their seat until the very end. Very well done.

The narration left a bit to be desired, in my opinion. Some of the narrative seemed rushed, some words mispronounced. Overall, the spookiness of 'It' and the hypnotic tone used for 'Danny' was engaging.

Totally recommended.

Daniel Donnelly, of 'The Haunting of Timber Manor' by E.F. Feely, Jr., is grieving for his mother and father who died together in a boating accident. He struggles through their funeral arrangements and getting their finances in order, but he hasn't had time to grieve. Surprisingly, his father's sister contacts him and invites him to come visit and Daniel agrees. He's not really ready for a trip, but she's his only living relative and he can't refuse. In Daniel's search to get to know his aunt and family history, he walks into a hornet's nest of unresolved family issues created years ago and ones only he can resolve.

Daniel looks forward to meeting his estranged aunt and seeing the family estate which is much more extensive than he'd ever imagined. When his aunt tells him that he is the heir, it's almost surreal. He's overwhelmed by the prospect, but intends to live up to her expectations. The people at Timber Manor are all excited to have Daniel back, especially Hale, the local sheriff, old family friend, and part-time employee. Daniel and Hale feel an affinity right away which leads to a friendship which grows into intimacy. As the manor and grounds reveals their secrets through nightmares and paranormal activities, Daniel appreciates Hale's comforting presence more than ever. When Daniel's back is to the wall, and his enemy makes it's its purpose so demonstratively known, Daniel chooses to fight rather than run.

Hale is a large, strong, and handsome man, with a huge heart and lots of compassion. He becomes Daniel's anchor and is quite protective of him. Hale thinks he knows the history of the manor and the people associated with it because he's been there all of his life; but as more secrets are discovered, he becomes indignant. The passion between Hale and Daniel is hot and sweet and considerate. Hale puts Daniel's feelings before his own. His concern for Daniel is admirable and doesn't go unnoticed by him. Hale's loyalty is even stronger. Not one to back down from a challenge, especially when it is a just one, Hale is right beside Daniel. When he needs him, he's there with encouragement and support. Even though it may not be his fight, it involves people he loves and that's more than enough for Hale to pitch in.

The story has all of the elements one would expect in a proper Gothic tale—the foreboding feelings in and around the house with violent and frightening secrets oozing from every window and door. It does, however, lean more toward a mystery, rather than blood and guts horror. Each character adds their own special slant to the plot as the puzzles are revealed. In an effort to let each character express himself, F.E. chose to allow each one to enlighten us with their own interpretation of events. He accomplishes this by switching from one to the next as is appropriate. Although the changes are clearly marked, it was a bit confusing until I got the hang of it. Rather than being limited to one person's viewpoint, I was able to see what everyone was thinking. For a debut author, it's a great start. I think F.E. has great potential and, personally, I am looking forward to reading many more books of his in the future. I recommend this story to everyone who likes a good mystery in a Gothic setting involving strong characters, deep, dark family secrets, suspense, and a very scary entity who is out to destroy everything. Thank you, F.E., for the intriguing tale.

Overall, this wasn't bad, I think it just wasn't for me. I couldn't get into the writing. The characters were nice and sweet but I had trouble with their decision making and some actions. I would have preferred to have been privy to conversations vs. reading that they stayed up all night talking or "bantered back and forth"
Some information in the novel was unnecessary to the point of distraction, it would have been better used maybe creating a more solid connection and chemistry between characters.
Again, its not bad and I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading, it just wasn't my style is all.

From general point of view this is a fine, enjoyable piece of work. Sure this story is nothing special, but even so, I liked it. F.E. Feeley's Writing style was oddly good, but some POV were rather unimportant. I would rather have only Daniels and Holes POV, then so many others. This story was more like a movie to me.

There were a few things about this book that I didn't like, such as the insta-love and a few others things but I did like the basic premise. It's quite creepy which is a bonus but I don't like PNR, as in having new characters for each book. I don't see how they're considered a series when most could be read as stand alone's.

This is a ghost story woven around a romance. Told in first person narrative by all of the main characters, and with much of the story explained through flashbacks, it can be a little disjointed at times, but this does allow for a deeper understanding of the thoughts and actions of the people involved. While it takes a while to get there, the story does pick up and the ending is eventful.

The romance between Daniel and Hale is sweet and with the dual perspectives, you get insight into the minds of each man as they explore their feelings. Their romance is a friends to lovers tale, and the sex scenes move the relationship forward. The ghost story is layered and intense and many would consider it spooky.

There is a lot of emotional growth experienced by the characters as the ghostly aspect of the story develops. For those of you who love the supernatural and occult and situations that demand a medium, this story might be for you. You even get to read some of the story from the medium’s perspective.

This book is full of emotion, loss, love, and fear. It explores decisions a family made in fear and how they have long lasting consequences. There were some pretty disturbing ideas dealing with mental illness and what can happen to a family as a result.

I think this is the first published book by this author, and I applaud the editing and writing. With more experience, this will be an author to enjoy. I look forward to seeing Mr. Feeley develop as a writer.

Sometimes for a reader the connection with the book isn’t made and that is what happened for me. There were too many POV’s, too much talking in the character’s heads, and info dumps. There are many readers who will enjoy this one, but it I have to admit I just couldn’t get into it.

This was probably more of a 3.5 for me, but I'll keep it at 4 because I liked the story. I've had this on my TBR for about a year and I kept putting it off. Not in the mood for ghosts I would tell myself. This year though, I made a goal to read things out of my comfort zone. I figured I would start small and go with ghosts :) I am glad I did. This story was great.

Daniel, oh poor Daniel. He lost his parents in an accident at the same time. Losing one parent is hard enough, but both? Yeah. Right off the bat I felt for him. The opening scene of him driving, I LOVED! I had it in my head, even the radio turned down low. You see Daniel was driving to his Aunt's house that he's never met (well can remember anyway) at Timber Manor near Portland from Texas.

This is when things get strange. CREEPY! Wolves, sounds, dreams, etc. all happen in this house, but not without Hale, the town Sheriff.

I am ALL for insta-love. Seriously. I love it. Hell, my own marriage was an insta-love beginning. However, I need to more showing to believe it. It kind of fell flat for me in places, because I didn't see it happening. I was bummed. It started out great, but I always felt like I was missing something. That kind of makes it sound bad, but it wasn't. I really loved Daniel and Hale :)

What I could have lived without? All the different POV's. I could see Carol's being there since she brought some back story of the Manor, but everyone else? There was one point where we were in Anita's POV and she was calling Papa Jim "Daddy", so I think that was supposed to be Carol's POV and not Anita's. I was really confused for a minute and had to re-read it like 3 times.

Overall, this was a great PNR! This was my first by F.E. Feeley Jr. and it won't be my last :)

Personaggio affascinante.

Dear Mr. Feeley, please write more ghost stories like this. I really enjoyed this one and your other book Objects in the Rearview Mirror. It reminded me so much of my childhood, reading ghost stories at night. I would love to see Francine again, she seems like a character with so many stories to tell. Really looking forward to your future books. Thanks. :)

Always remember, love’s very nature is to break the ties and fetters that try to restrain it, it will make a mockery of those who mock it, and will drive even the stoutest of them who try to destroy it to their knees. When you choose love, you choose greatness, because love is our greatest ally.

4.5 Stars!

An old school ghost story set in the modern day, Gothic, chilling, scary and a fun read.
Daniel's parents have been recently killed in a boating accident and his father's sister requests he visit the family home and become the heir apparent.
As he loses his way to the house during a dark, stormy night, Daniel is rescued by the local Sherriff one Hale Davis and their attraction to one another quickly develops into a physical and loving relationship....so begins this ghost story.
A nice, entertaining read. The relationship progresses a little too quickly for my preference and the ghost story is a little reminiscent of those Hammer House of Horror movies from the 60's and 70's, but none-the-less a great little story.
