The NHL’s most charming player is ready to score a hat trick on and off the ice...

As the star forward for the Boston Blades, I’ve earned a reputation for no-strings attached hookups and a mean slapshot that has all the ladies purring -- but it’s never been the one woman I want to see all fired up and ready to score.

Boston’s own Ice Queen Gwen James has had my emotions all tangled up for years. I’ve played the games. I’ve sat on the sidelines.

No matter her reasons, I’m done being benched.

When she approaches me for a second chance, I accept on one condition: she’s got to prove she’s all in.

No kissing. No sex.

It just might kill me to keep my hands to myself, but it’s time Gwen knows what it’s like to beg.

At the end of the day, I play to win, and I want what no other man has ever had…her heart.

Hat Trick is book three in the Blades Hockey series by Maria Luis. I loved the first two books in this series. This book is Gwen James and Marshall Hunt’s story and to be honest with you, going in, I wondered how in the world these two would work together. They seemed completely ill matched. But, I was wrong. Because they did fit, perfectly.

Gwen James otherwise known as Icy Gwen James or the Ice Queen, is twenty eight years old and works at a top PR firm, Golden Lights Media in Boston. Gwen first met Marshall when they were both in college. She is three years older than he is. He pursued her relentlessly but he was too young for her. Now, Marshall is a pro hockey player for the Boston Blades and he once again has his eye on Gwen. But Gwen doesn’t do relationships. She was taught by her mother who was at least on husband number four by now, that you don’t trust men. That love isn’t real.

Marshall Hunt has it all, or it seems from the outside that he does. He’s rich, has the job of his dreams, and constantly dates beautiful models. But for Marshall, the models are all just temporary until he finally convinces the woman of his dreams to take a chance on him. It’s been six years of rejections, though. Maybe it’s time to finally give up. So the last time Gwen turns him down, he finally tells her that’s it. That he’s done. And he walks away.

Gwen has spent the last year really working on herself. Trying to undo the damage her upbringing did. I loved seeing how her friendship with Charlie and Zoe has grown into best friends. When Marshall walked away from Gwen, she felt like her heart was going with him. All those years of trying to get her to go out with him and she never trusted him enough to take the leap. But now he had given up.

“For the first time in my life, I’m going all in.”

Gwen convinces Marshall to give her another chance. But this time, it’s going to be on Marshall’s terms. No sex, not even kissing, until he’s convinced that she’s really in it. Watching these two find their way was such a beautiful thing. Watching Gwen let down her defenses for Marshall little by little. But, both Gwen and Marshall have pasts that haven’t let go of them yet. Both have trust issues. And there is something surprising that ties them together. Of course, just when that last little bit of a wall is about to come down, that past has to come back and rear it’s head and threaten all the progress they’ve made together.

“In my arms, she’s an open book whose pages are begging to be loved.”

sexy

I loved this one. Gwen and Marshall both deserved happiness and they were the perfect fit for each other. They just had to leave the past behind and find their future with each other. The next book in this series, the fourth and final book, Body Check, is a second chance romance. It is Holly and Jackson’s story, and I can’t wait to read it.

My favorite in the series so far! Hero has wanted the heroine for about 6 years but she always turns him down due to her own issues. He did become a playboy but I was totally fine with it because it was all off screen, and the heroine had been a "playgirl" too, which we witnessed in the previous books, (she even got with the team's GM off screen) so it was a pretty even ground between them. Usually I also don't like when the heroine does the chasing, but I didn't mind this one either because I thought it was cute how the hero wanted to hold off on anything sexual until he was sure she was in it for real. One thing I didn't like though, was how this was a completely different heroine than the one I read in previous books. I was looking forward to that fierce, perfect, playgirl act that she had going on. I know she had a change of heart and all that, but it was still too quick of a change for me, and I would have liked to see her grow from that in this book. One other little thing, was I felt like the hero should have groveled more at the end. I felt like he kind of turned it around on her when he was the one that lied and I hate how he almost didn't feel like it was a big deal, even knowing how it crushed her years before too. Besides all that, this was a sweet read.

Safety:

H is 25/h is 28

Hero is said to be manho, but no screentime of it

Heroine was previously a playgirl but has been celibate for a year

No OW/OM drama

No Virgins

No Cheating

2.5 stars. WTF 🤬 This hero is more like a zero. He takes no responsibility for the hurt he’s caused and pushes it all back on the heroine. She’s the one who had to come running back to him. She’s the one who has to grovel. He’s a POS who wagered with his friends to take her virginity in college but he treats that like a big nothing burger and shames her for walking away from him when she finds out. I feel like the author lost the plot in this book - the interactions between the MCs are so unhealthy - with the heroine taking all the blame and the hero just acting soooo wronged by her, when he’s been the asshole all along.

Oh you’re surprised she doesn’t trust you?

Well maybe it’s because she just realized you’ve withheld info and lied to her for years.

Crazy! How dare she!?!?

They met years ago in college
He tried to pursue her, she rejected him
He pursues her for the next several years and she always rejects him
Neither are celibate
He sleeps with models and it’s cringe inducing how the author basically insinuates that models are nothing but walking vaginas for him to fuck at random
She hooks up with random old dudes who give her giftcards as parting gifts 😵‍💫😵‍💫
No one else for either in this book

Maria Luis is an author I have been meaning to read for quite some time. Many of my friends with similar reading tastes have enjoyed her work, along with a number of my favourite authors, so it was a given that I needed to grab one of her books at some point. As to which book I picked up… well, all appealed. The Blades Hockey series, the NOLA Heart series, and Breathless have all appealed to me. In fact, it made it very hard to decide which one I wanted to read first. In the end, the choice was made for me when the chance came about to read Hat Trick.

Although Hat Trick is the third book in the Blades Hockey series, it works perfectly fine as a standalone novel. The story has a start and end, one you can understand without any prior knowledge of the series. There are side characters whose love story is unknown, those told in the prior books, but this does not lessen your enjoyment. You can enjoy Hat Trick for the wonderful story it is, and be left with the desire to read Power Play and Sin Bin because you’re curious about the other character and not because of blank spots in your knowledge. You can trust me on that, as I plan to go and read the two prior books soon – I need more of Maria Luis, and I know reading the Blades Hockey series is just the start of me working through all her work.

From the very first page of Hat Trick, I was sucked into the story. I loved the characters as individuals, and their chemistry was fabulous. I loved their interactions, the banter between them, and the way views slowly changed to become so much more. There is such history between the characters, and I enjoyed watching as details slowly came to life. Things that came out towards the end of the story really got me, leaving my emotions all kinds of messed up. I was sucked in, and I couldn’t help but be lost to the story – once I started reading the world around me disappeared until I was finished.

With great characters, wonderful chemistry, and an amazing storyline, you’ll be lost to Hat Trick from the moment you open the book. Although I would have liked to read the series in order (not out of necessity, merely because I’m trying to break my bad habit of reading series out of order), I cannot help but view this as a perfect introduction to Maria Luis work. This book demonstrated how the author is capable of providing all I want in a romance – characters, chemistry, storyline, emotion, and some humour.

If you have yet to pick up a Maria Luis book, I would suggest you change that now. If you’re already a fan of Maria Luis and have yet to pick up Hat Trick, I would suggest you change that now. This book is more than worth reading.

I cannot believe that this book was written by the same author!

Wow. Just wow. I love authors who write multi-layered characters, believe me I do! But I just cannot believe how polar opposite this guy is from the hero in the book that introduced me to this author. While Jackson was one of my faves, this guy is my least favorite type of guy in more ways than one. I was only a few pages in when this douche-canoe is bragging about only dating supermodels. Then a couple of pages later he’s joke-bragging to the heroine about his sex life with other women. I’m immediately in wtf-land. Don’t get me wrong some of my favorite hero’s have been as holes, but they own it. They embrace it and usually by the end they are the best book boyfriends. This guy isn’t that. He’s the worst hero, a guy who acts like a major douche, but he and everyone him are convinced he is Prince Charming. He doesn’t have a sincere vibe in his body. If he wanted the heroine to take him seriously, he would not act like he does. He doesn’t just have quiet one night stands, he moves from supermodel to supermodel DATING them, as in tabloids etc. so even if the heroine wanted to give him a shot, why would should she? He shows her how much he doesn’t give a crap each time he throws his come on at her and then she immediately sees him dating a new celebrity. Who would trust that? Gold diggers who don’t care about sincerity I guess. It’s one thing if it happens before the heroine, but while he is actively pursuing her it’s just gross. This girl had went through hell with her mother and here comes this guy to play mind games with her for years, under the guise of wanting to be with her. Sure. Except that he made it obvious that she wasn’t actually worth doing the work or making an effort. God forbid he work without a net or *gasp* go without sex to prove he’s serious about a girl.
So here’s the list.
He’s douchey over and over again
He’s insincere.
He’s selfish
He plays the victim constantly
No loyalty, but seems think he does
Constant heroine shaming, she’s such a bad person for not trusting him when he’s never bothered to show how serious he was. This one is also a shame on th author as well, because it goes on and on in this book, she is the one apologizing no matter how douchey he is. I just don’t get it. Forget him giving a grand gesture, he waits for her to beg him back and then shames her again for being willing to let him walk away? Wth? She should have let him walk away.
I’m going to try one more because I need to split the difference, so we shall see I guess!

Received an ARC at no cost to author.. Maria did something I did not think was possible, she had me not only like Gwen, but root for her and have my sympathy. When we first met Gwen in the first book (and if you haven't read, what?!?!) Stop what you are doing and begin with power play, okay back to my rambling, hen we fist met Gwen we hated her, yes at the end she assisted but she was til bitch the we have Sin bin, more redemption but still not my favorite. But after reading this book, you feel for her and you understand her and more importantly you see how she want to be different and her inner struggle with regrets. And then we have Marshall who I truly always liked, and hearing about his childhood broke my heart. The one thing I was about to go thru book an knock him out was the bet thing, I thought has going to act like it was no big thing, but I should know Maria better and she wouldn't do that!Anyhoo when it comes out grab a copy and Enjoy!!!

Mon avis en Français

My English review

I was really looking forward to discovering Gwen’s story. It must be said that we had discovered her since the first story where she had a fairly important role to start with, but it was also the case with the rest! So yes, I was looking forward to knowing everything about her.

Gwen seems cold, it’s a bit like that that we’ve seen her from the beginning, but in this novel, we finally understand why. Our dear heroine really didn’t have an easy life, between a mother who continually belittles her and an absent father. That’s how our heroine became the woman she is, the one who doesn’t trust men, and even less so Hunt who has been trying for years to date her. But here we are after yet another refusal, Hunt decides that he had enough, that he will stop, and Gwen realizes that she had always taken him for granted. So to get him back, she’s going to have to work, to show that she really wants him and this time she has no choice.

Like I said, I loved following Gwen, finally seeing who she really was. She is a sensitive woman who wants things to be done the way she wants, but she is afraid it will change. And there’s Hunt… His past is also always there to catch him up and he really doesn’t know how to get rid of it.

I had a good time with this novel once again and I am curious to see who will be highlighted in the next one!

3.5 Short review. Third book in the series but the first book that I have read. Marshall is a very well written book boyfriend, he wants a relationship with Gwen and has been pursuing her for six years. He finally decides after being reject by her again that he's done pursuing her and plans on moving on with his life this jolts Gwen into realizing that she has been taking Marshall for grant all this time.

*mini spoiler*My favorite part was when Gwen asks Marshall out and he rejects her after years of being rejected it would have been wrong if Marshall had said yes. I liked that Marshall made Gwen prove that she wanted a relationship with him and didn't just want him because he was done chasing her. *end of spoiler*

I felt the ending was rushed and would have liked if it was fleshed out a little bit more.

Could not love this series more. Gwen, the chick you love to hate, quickly becomes so much more. And Marshall the pretty playboy reveals a much deeper side. And the two of them just WORK. PERFECTLY.

Hot Hockey Players!

This one might be my new favorite. Marshall and Gwen’s story was so sweet. People from completely different backgrounds can be right for each other. They had more in common than it appeared from the outside. Marshall has been one of my favorites. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Loving the Blades

3rd book in the Blades series did not disappoint. Gwen and Marshall had a lot to overcome both individually and together. There’s a life lesson in this one....don’t let your past dictate your future. Looking forward to Body Check!

I found a reason to connect with Gwen. The book was not he first time we hear about Gwen or Marshall. They both have had less than stellar reputations that have proceeded their introduction as main characters. I personally recommend that if you have not, you stop and go back read the previous books in this series to see how much growth there has been in the characters, Gwen in particular. You get to see a different aspect of her life and her as a person. Or you could just jump right in and enjoy a budding romance that will show you there are possibilities sometimes we just have to explore.

Maria Luis have found a way to balance the angst of life, sports, pain, and romance. She gives a story that makes you want to step back and visit with the other characters that you see glimpses of in this read. I enjoyed her writing, her story, her characters, and the way she put it all together.

Marshall is NHL’s most charming player. He has a reputation for dating models and having no strings attached hook ups!
Gwen is a major ice queen and Marshall has had his eye on her for years. But she’s never interested.. when he tires of chasing her, she realises what she’s missing and set to show him that she’s all in.

HAT TRICK is a reverse age gap/grumpy sunshine romance with major he falls first vibes. This book is apart of a series but can be read as a standalone hockey romance. (Hat Trick is book 3 of 4)

I love hockey books and I like this series, but this one was a definite miss for me. Too much lust, not enough affection and feelings...I know! I guess I'm a bit old fashioned. I will say that if you enjoy steamy romance books that get straight to the point (you know who you are), then you'll probably enjoy this one. It just wasn't for me.

Love their relationship

Loved this couple. From the push and pull, to the tension, to all the dram and spice. This made me want pie, and I wouldn't mind if a hot, massive and gorgeous hockey player was served with it 😉
It was good seeing our fmc become the person she wanted to be and how they end with a hea.
Great narration.

This was so cute!
Marshall was a great guy who tried for Gwynn for so long that he gave up and she had to chase after him. Usually I don't love when the girl has to chase the guy but this book did it well.
I loved the nod to trauma and how it can manifest in your life without you really knowing that's what's happening.
I also loved the nod that family isn't everything. Sometimes the people who are your "family" are the most toxic in your life and don't really have the right to be there.

Tbh I really enjoyed this one out of the entire series so far . Not only was the banter good. The chemistry was off the charts , it was nice seeing Gwen not be a bitch and actually being able to relate to her and see why she is the way she is. It was also nice seeing Marshall be just a genuine good guy . I loved this one by far the most absolutely. 3.7 stars.
