Born on a Friday, Sophie Winters has always been a loving and giving child, who'd do anything for her family. Yet her father, Bill, has always seemed to resent her. For her mother's sake, Sophie learns to live with Bill's animosity - until the night he drunkenly forces himself upon her.
Left pregnant and ashamed at seventeen, Sophie doesn't know where to turn. So when she meets the charming Ben Lewis and he offers her refuge at his mother's hotel, she accepts. At first it seems that Ben and his mother are quite the good Samaritans. But there is little goodness in the Lewises' hearts. As Sophie realises their dark intentions, a web of danger and deceit wraps itself around her. She knows if she is to survive, she will have to fight for all she's worth...
Before becoming a writer, I was a Placement Support Worker and foster carer, and worked in the social services department after completing a teacher training course. Many children have joined my family over the years. I still live in Nuneaton, where many of my books are set, with my husband, Trevor, and our beloved dogs.
I was thrilled to discover that I'd become one of the top 250 most-borrowed library authors in the UK, and would like to thank all of you who have taken out my books over the last few years! I love meeting my readers and am always pleased to hear from you. I hope you will all continue to get in touch and please do sign up for my newsletter!
Bit of shite really - should have been made into one of those 'real drama' films on living tv in the day! I'm aware that this is a harrowing subject, but as a 'novel' it's quite all over the place, ranging from an almost autobiographical text, to a thriller mystery, to a romance novel. Every time I started to get in to the more gripping aspects of book it would take on a wishy washey feel.
This is the tale of a teenage lass in 1960s Blackpool who finds herself unexpectedly single and pregnant, through no fault of her own. Desperate and naive, she falls into the hands of a ne'er-do-well charmer who offers her refuge (and work) at his mother's hotel, claiming that they are connected with the social welfare system. Surprise! Things do not go well! At times it seems as though this book must be set further in the past than the 1960s. I suspect that this is simply because I was alive then and this was not my experience of that time. It is easy to forget that the security, comfort and privilege that I enjoyed was far from everyone's experience! This is a tale of grooming and modern day slavery that has uncomfortable echoes in more recent events in Rotherham and Rochdale... Although this is not my usual style of reading material, and the story does involve some things that rather stretch one's belief, not to mention a certain dollop of unlikely romance, this actually proved to be quite an absorbing read. I really wanted to know what happened to Sophie, the heroine of the story, and her friend Tilly. I'm not saying that I'm going to rush out and read more of this type of book, but I wouldn't rule it out, either.
Not quite a clean read, but not excessive and very, very interesting!
I truly enjoyed this book. It was an absolute page-turner with plenty of drama to keep you horrified and thoroughly engaged. Language and details were occasionally sketchy, true to the dark context of plot and characters, but not overdone where one would have to skip pages frequently. Most of the book is clear of vulgarity, with only a few exceptions. Best of all, there are twists and turns to keep you guessing, and the ending is the biggest surprise of all. I would definitely try another book from this author.
Im slowly working my way through rosie goodwins books and forsaken just like all the others ive read so far did not let me down! Loved it cant wait for the next book!!!
Wow, this is the first book I've read by Rosie Goodwin, found it hard to put down, a tale of secrets, love, deceit, poor sophie, and Tilly, met by chance, and then all hell breaks lose.
Until a few months ago I had not read any of Rosie Goodwin's books but from the first one I have not stopped reading them and to date they have all been gripping and I have found
I can't remember the last time a book held my attention as well as this one did. The good folks were wonderful, the villains were truly evil, and every chapter leaves you wanting more!
