This is a good beginning to the series. It's great to have a diverse character as the hero and this cover captures Jinn beautifully. The story is solid and the characters well-developed. The ending had me pre-ordering Nitara, book 2 in the series.

This story had surprises galore and really went in a direction I hadn’t expected. Jinn is kind of a loner and refuses to take sides in the world that warring humans and paranormals have created. He still mourns Nitara, his wife and lives everyday remembering the life they shared before they were cursed . His reality is shattered when Mike, an old friend shows up with a photo that shows a woman in a cage who bares a striking resemblance to Nitara . It’s time for Jinn to go hunting and woe betide any that get in the way of this powerful Djinn !
As much as I had sympathy for Jinn I did feel he could have had more presence as this story progressed. It actually became quite an ensemble piece as the author introduced the world she has created and some of the characters that inhabit it. This is about Jinn tracking down where the wife he had been told is dead actually is but there’s so much more in play here. Fae, Shifters and even Dragons are a huge part of this adventure but it was the inequities , sheer poverty and deprivation that made this very different. There’s definitely more to come in this series and the end of this book whilst in some ways was a triumph of good versus evil most certainly leaves the reader with serious questions that need answering.

Move Over I Dream of Jeannie.....

Did you ever wonder how the DJinn came to be and how they got into the bottle? Well read this awesome new series and find out!

After living for centuries out of his bottle because of a wish from a true friend, but feeling the loss of all he holds dear, Jinn discovers that his wife thought dead centuries ago is alive and being held captive by the very evil that trapped him centuries ago. Jinn is very powerful, the most powerful of the supernatural, but needs help in this instance when all the different factions are separated after the great war between human and sups against sups for domination. Fae Fairy, slithers, shifters and different sups must join forces to stop the evil from destroying what is left of the devasted world.

Will they get to their destination in time to stop the threatening event and will Jinn be reunited with Natira?

This book should be exactly what I am looking for, UF, supernaturals, djinn, and a black main character, written by a black author. BUT...
The story is good, the characters are interesting, but the book suffers from stilted writing and a few instances of improper word usage.

I listened to this on audio, (yay! Black narrator for the black MC!) and at first was confused as to whether my problem was the narration or the writing, but I think it was definitely the writing, which made it a difficult listen.

90% of my reading is UF/PNR and I really want to read books in those genres with more black characters.

Jessica Cage’s booklist is basically my dream TBR pile, so I will keep reading. I just saw an ad for her mermaid series... and a sphinx book... and a medusa book...I can’t resist that.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Are you looking for some great world building that will take you to a world that you could never really dream of? Then look no further then this start to a brand new series. We meet Jinn who just happens to be a Djinn that was freed from his vessel. After years of essentially hiding her returns to the equivalent of today's world to find all kinds of strange things going on since the paranormal world came out of hiding. Thinking his wife was dead he tried to move on but when someone brings him information to the contrary he goes looking for her which leads to a fascinating adventure that leads to the end making you want book two now. Perfect for fans of the genre. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Cursed into a life of servitude of anyone who held the magical lamp he was confined to, Jinn eventual finds his freedom. Without the love of his life beside him, he turns inwards and isolates himself from the world. But even immortals need company. When Jinn learns that the love of his life may still be alive, he will stop at nothing to find her, even if that means involving himself in a looming war.

I enjoyed this story and will continue on with the sequels.

Alright

This was an ok story, but felt oddly disjointed in the way it's written. A lot of things happen very quickly without much explanation, and then we get tonnes of explanation for stuff that needs none. I found myself not want to get back to it, but forcing myself in the hopes something good would happen. It didn't really. I won't be reading the next one.

SPOLER ALERT
The first book should have been free, as it is setting up the characters and the world. It was not a romance book. They did not get together until the last one 6 minutes of the book. BIG disappointment.

The strongest about to be challenged in this rousing and magical new series. The story is full of wonderfully strong, bold characters that make readers sit up and take notice and each of them have their own quirks in this story which makes them quite entertaining. The first book’s main hero is Jinn who has been cursed and has interest in pick a side in the battles and wars being fought between the all the magical creatures who now rule the land until an old friend presents him with an offer he can’t refuse. This fast paced plot keeps reader glued to the pages as Jinn rounds up some friends to save his wife whom he thought was dead but there is a new player on the field and it won’t be easy. Surprising twists and lots of thrilling action ensure that there is never a dull moment and the author has brought the story to vivid life which it makes it easy for the readers to become completely caught up in the story. Although this does mean the story does end of a bit of a cliffhanger, the ending is quite climatic and is a rather unexpected twist that ensures readers will want to find out what happens in the next book,. This post-apocalyptic world is intriguing with some unique and creative elements that make for a very entertaining read that readers will have a hard time putting down once they begin.

This one was tough for me. I found it hard to get engaged and stay engaged. I ended up purchasing the audiobook because it's easier for me to stay focused when someone is telling me the story.

There was a lot going on and it seemed a bit fragmented. Like I wasn't 100% sure what the overarching goal of the story was.

Was it finding Jinns lost love?
Was it uniting the Fae and Fairies?
Was it fostering equality and peace for the Shifters?
Was it saving the world?

There was just ALOT going on. And while I didn't dislike the story or any of the characters in particular, this wasn't a story that for me will be memorable and I don't see myself continuing on with the series. Even with the cliffhanger, we're left with.

We read this book for episode 76 of our podcast. The world has been turned upside-down by the emergence of the supernatural beings and the fall of humans. Jinn was the original Djinn set free and has chosen to not take side in this new world divided by different magical factions. Until he hears that his wife, who he thought dead for centuries, is actually alive and being held hostage. He quickly gathers an odd collection of friends to help him find and rescue Nitara. But is it too late? This book has some beautiful lessons about tolerance and judging those you have an imperfect knowledge of. The different supernatural beings Jinn gathers on his quest are forced to learn more about each other and the inequities that still exist in their world. In the end, this was a unique book for us because instead of a meet-cute and a relationship building overtime we get a man hunting for his long lost love. While we don’t get the sexy times we like, it was still interesting to explore a different type of paranormal romance book. Heads up, it ends on a cliffhanger and makes you want to read the next book right away. For more of our thoughts, listen to episode 76 of Shhh We’re Reading Dirty Books found on any podcast platform!

I usually apply what I call my “Dresden test” to this kind of book, looking to see how the lead character stacks up against Jim Butler’s Harry Dresden. Well, Jinn, the star of Jessica Cage’s Jinn (The Immortalem Series Book 1), more than satisfied that test. I love the post-apocalyptic setting, the quest to find Jinn’s wife, the deal that is struck. Pretty much the whole thing. Strong writing, great characters, strong plot and the start of a great story arc. Yup, passes any test I can think of. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - this book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, that was not what I expected! I really can’t wait for the sequel to Jinn! The story moved along a little on the slow side for me at first but I think it was needed for world building and to really get a good grasp of what kind of person Jinn really is, supernaturally and his human nature. But after it picked up, there was no way I could put this down. I WAS STUCK! As you read from the synopsis Jinn has stayed neutral in the war but there is a woman that he lost a very long time ago. He would go to the ends of the earth for her. When there is a chance that she is still alive he makes a choice to take sides to aid an old friend and try to bring the different supernatural species together in exchange for information on her location. But many of these supernatural beings are extremely scared of what Jinn just may do if he cannot find the love of his life. The journey that Jinn and his rag-tag crew go on is very eye opening, not only for the beings in the story but can also give you some perspective of every day life in the real world. All of the characters are a little different and the banter between them all keeps the story light and entertaining. There are some major twists and turns nearing the end of the book. And the ending….well, I’m gonna have to let you get to that point. Kudos to Jessica Cage! I am looking forward continuing Jinn’s journey!

Wow. Just wow. This book was a fast moving book. I was so engrossed in it I finished in just a few days. With this being the first book in the series it describes the world well. I was very happy to see that so many “creatures” in this book. From Djinn, faerie, fae, shifters, and my favorite dragons. All of these don’t make a main appearance but they are in the world with some others as well.

I loved that the MC is not white! The cover is perfect for him. He is mainly a loner with a few friends. He stayed neutral until his best friend rocks his world by telling him is wife isnt dead, but being held captive by their “maker” a warlock. From then on he is on a mission to bring his wife back, he gets a rag tag group together and go after her. And it gets real good from then on.

There were a few spelling errors or grammatical errors in the book. But that didn’t stop me from reading it. They were few and far between.
I wish the ending was better, only because I wanna know what happened to some people and how certain things go. It was a cliffhanger that didn’t really cliffhang on the most important parts. Lol.

Yes I am getting the next book. 100%.

This book has: dragons, fairies, Fae, shifters, djinn, traitors, loving characters, post apocalyptic fantasy,

Great for all YA readers and up.

"Jinn" tells the story of a genie, Jin, freed from his container. As the world collapses around him he stays independent, refusing to help any side.
Until he is told that his wife, Nitara, also a genie, is still alive. It's been 2,000 years since they were last together and he will move heaven and earth to rescue her.
Of course there is a powerful wizard, the very same one who enslaved Jin and Nitara, intent of controlling and/or destroying the paranormal world - Jinn will have to overcome him to save both his wife and the world.
The writing is often awkward and clumsy; words that aren't quite right, phrases that are not completely comprehensible ('a hoard of fairies' ... “You’ll only implement yourself!”)
That's the downside, but there are also good things - author Jessica Cage is a talented storyteller and world builder.
And there's the crux of the problem - poor writing and overly simplistic plotting let a potentially great story down.
I normally read one or two books per day but I struggled with 'Jin' and with 30 pages to go almost gave up.
I finished it eventually and the semi-cliffhanger left me cold.
2.5 Stars, raised to 3 Stars - it's not for me but I suspect others who are less critical would have a different opinion.

It took a moment for me to get into this one, but when the ish hit the hand I fanned with, it was on! I loved the world building. I know because this is book 1 the author had to take her time setting up everything, and it was worth it! This book kept me on my toes. Jinn and his crew didn't know who to call foe or friend. I loved the way the author took her time introducing each character and giving their backstories. And while I said it took a moment to get into the book, once I did get into it, I understood why the author took her time. That ending was so explosive and unexpected. I can't wait to get into book 2!

I give this book five-pages (think five-stars). Nikki-Michelle recommends this book.

With this read you will be immersed into a magical world with many unique characters. In reality this world is post-apocalyptic world and not good for many. As each species tries to live in there section darkness is coming.

The world building in this story was awesome. I felt like I was right beside each characters as they learned of a darkness coming that they new they would have to fight. As Jinn sets out to save his wife he brings together magical species that are enemies. When or if they defeat the darkness will they be able to coincide together? Will they win the fight? Will they be successful?

This was a read that keeps you turning the pages and hoping Jinn is successful in his journey.

I was going to give it only three stars but the ending really caught me off guard but I do understand it.
The writing is pretty good, easy to read but the story is a tad basic. Everything is a little to easy and straight forward at least in this first part. I've enjoyed it but if feels like the same old same old. I really haven't seen anyone use "coax" and "lasso" as much as Cage.
I really appreciate the different characters and I must say Jinn is an asshole! I adore the powerful women, the diverse bodies (not thin normative folk), how all mythical and fantasy creatures coexiste in one story and not having the USA as the sole part and center of the world as well as how nice all povs are intertwined.

This is my introduction to Jessica Cage, an author I'd been wanting to read. I was excited when it became available as an audiobook on Everand. Alas, the narration missed the mark for me. The narrator was flat with his delivery and the voices melded. At times it was hard for me to parse whether I was underwhelmed by the book because of the narration or or the overall story.

I even started the 2nd book in the series – again as an audiobook ... with the same narrator – and had to stop 33% in. I couldn't even focus on the story. I'll have to switch to ebook, which is unfortunate as I rely on audiobooks for most of my reading and thus may not get back to this series until later this year....

Bravo!!!👏🏼👏🏼

Wow! This book was great. This book started off slow for me but it picked up pretty fast. Once it did it was on and popping. I love paranormal reads. I'm a really big fan of it. I like this book because all the different species came together to defeat the evil. I felt bad for Jinn when he realize that his wife wasn't gonna stay with him after everything he did to rescue her. I was hoping he got his happy ending. I'll have to wait for the next book to see if he will get his happy ending then. I hope Praia is alright. I hope Mike is able to get to her in time to save her. Great read Jessica. #KNL

First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.

This story is Gr8. Jinn is a djinn living in a futuristic world that is ruled by magic after a world war. There are two strong factions of magic users, witches & fae, and Jinn is a neutral. He has a mix of many types of a few friends. He finds out his wife is still aliveafter thousands of years, and being told she was dead. He goes on a mission to find & save her with his few friends. This story was so good, I couldn't put it down. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up

The beginning of a real rollercoaster.
When I finished this book I was definitely ready to get right into book two. The first couple of chapters are what I’d call...tentative...not gripping, but full of promise. Then, along about chapter four... this story takes off and soars. The characters grow on you and the storyline bites down and refuses to let go. The dialogue is earthy and witty enough to elicit a nice belly chuckle here and there. The cliffhanger ending comes through an unexpected and devastating twist that’s masterfully sprung. If the rest of the series is of the same caliber, it’ll be well worth the investment.

A interesting book. I thought the world described was almost believable and made a great place for the story to be told. It took the basic story of Jinn finding out the love of his life was still alive and a prisoner. The story is then about him trying to find and rescue her. Loved the mix of characters, creatures, and "human" nature revealed by all. Just an entertaining story to get lost in. Full of battles, secrets and trying to save the world, I really liked it. Cannot wait to see what happens next. It kept me entertained.

DNF 20%

This just turned out not to be something I want to read. I love that Jinn is a black man and, though he could change his appearance, he doesn't. He likes himself. This is actually why I bought the book. But Jinn is also Aladdin's djinn. I'm not into fairytell retelling and/or spin offs. Plus, even in 20%, I've come across some questionable editing and choppy POV shifts/writing. So, I'm just going to stop now. No rating though, since I'm mostly stopping just because it's not my thing, rather than quality issues.
