Another great Captivating History book about a civilization I had never heard about
I really enjoyed this book about the Olmec culture. I had never heard about this culture prior to reading this great book. This book along with many of the other Captivating History books makes me wonder how much of history I was never exposed to in school history books and classes.
I highly recommend this book. I was surprised by the number of photos of various different artifacts.
A concise introduction to the Olmec civilization. Topics include who they were, where they came from and where they went. Their art, trade, influence and military are included. Religion, daily life and lasting influence is also discussed. A great starting point for learning about this fascinating Mesoamerican culture.
This is a very good and very understandable book about the Olmec civilization. The author talks about when that civilization existed, its culture, possible religion and how they established a wide-spread trading network. Their art is also discussed.
The civilization was divided sharply between the elite and everyone else.Their construction of pyramids is covered along with their calendar and, interestingly enough, tortillias and how they aided the wide-spread trading network.
The author also admits that there is not a whole lot known for absolute fact about that civilization. Educated assumptions can be made but they may not always be accurate.
This book is a great complement to the Olmecs overview by Enthralling History. It dives deeper into aspects of Olmec life, particularly their trade, art, and religion, with a strong focus on their commercial relationship. I learned a lot about how the Olmecs interacted with their neighbors through trade and what day-to-day life might have looked like for them.
It provides a solid introductory overview where it’s detailed enough to be informative, yet not overwhelming; and, in a good way, leaves the reader wanting to learn more about this civilization.
Simplistic to the point of being nearly a book report on more thorough Olmec histories (I'll be charitable and call it a "gloss"). Insofar as I can tell, there are no major mistakes and it touches briefly on a number of subjects, but there's no meaningful depth. At least there's a decent bibliography at the end.
The Olmec are a people history remembers very little about, but what things have been glimpsed and theorized about them seems to all be in here. The theories are treated with skepticism and both the arguments for and against are shown.
