I love, love, LOVE this book! I am praying through it with my future husband in mind, and would encourage all young ladies to do the same. We need to be praying for our future spouses, and these prayers (many based on the Psalms) are very fitting prayers for men engaged in spiritual warfare, who are contending with The Lord's enemies, and who stand on his Word against opposition.
The prayers are just scripture translated into a prayer form. Here's one taken from Psalm 119:
"Merciful Master, Look on his affliction and deliver him, and let him not forget your law. Plead his cause and redeem him; give him life according to Your promise! Salvation is far from the wicked, for the do not seek your statutes. Great is Your mercy, O Lord; give him life according to your rules. Even when his persecutors and adversaries are many, let him not swerve from your testimonies. May he look at the faithless with pity, because they do not keep Your commands. Consider how he loves your precepts! Give him life according to your steadfast love. The sum of Your Word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. (Psalm 119)"
Initially I liked this book. There are certainly some very insightful ways in which the scriptures are used to inspire the prayers in it. However I got quite tired of the tone which sometimes felt quite condemnatory. For example: ‘The great and awesome God who keeps commandment and steadfast love...Grant him continual patience and forebearance to live with me a wicked wife...’ The list which follows is quite useful and relevant (anxiety, love of money, lack of prayer). But perhaps ‘sinful’ might have been more appropriate than ‘wicked’ for a contemporary audience? The author’s decision to adopt the style of Puritan prayers and language made the prayers feel less natural and genuine for me. Otherwise, the concept of praying the Scriptures is a good one.
Andrew Case presents prayers based on scripture for wives to pray for their husbands. As I read through these prayers, usually one a day or two if they were shorter, I realized that these prayers may be prayed for anyone. This idea of praying scripture for someone is not new, but seeing this method practiced was so helpful. I will read this again and again as I pray for my husband and others.
I cannot recommend this enough. Each prayer is based of several scripture passages. It turns a slightly off balanced prayer life for our husband's to a biblical and precious time of intercession. Has produced love for my husband I never would have known because I subconsciously was selfishly praying for him somehow. God focused prayers!!
