The mess all started when I punched a 400-year-old fairy reality TV star in the throat. Things got really weird from there. Before I could blink, I was fighting wererats, getting kidnapped by superheroes, stealing a cape inhabited by the ghost of a magical genius, and trying to save the world alongside a 2,000-year-old immortal who wields a piece of Noah's Ark. All while struggling to not get evicted or fired from my job. That was just Monday. Tuesday is shaping up to be busier. My name is Sage butt-kicking sorceress, professional bodyguard, amateur superhero, and occasional screwup. For the world's sake, let's hope this isn't one of those times I screw up.
SORCERESS: SUPER HERO is the newest book in the superhero-filled world of Darius Brasher. Sage Hawthorne is a professional bodyguard who works for a beautiful fairy princess reality TV star (that she loathes) only to punch her in the throat in order to save some innocents. Stripped of her job and position, she's forced to take a job from a self-proclaimed angel to find the Spear of Destiny.
I really enjoyed this one but it is a very large amount of retcons to the world of OMEGA SUPERHERO and THE SUPERHERO DETECTIVE. Introducing magic is nothing new but there's now entirely new races like wererats and a Conclave of Mages. I'm interested in how this changes things in the other book lines.
I really like Sage and she's an entertaining character throughout. My only complaint about her storyline is that she's introduced as knowing who Inspector Jarvert is (i.e. from Les Miserables), even getting complimented for her intelligence. Except, afterward, she's portrayed as someone who doesn't read and is kind of dumb. I dunno, maybe she watched the Liam Neeson movie.
Even so, it's a very entertaining and full of humor as well as action. While I don't like it as much as the other two series set in the universe, it's still very very good.
A good read but after reading the blurb I had thought that it would have humour mixed into the plot but sadly that wasn't the case. It was still a jolly good read but some chuckles would have made it stupendous. The characters are terrific, especially the heroine who really should engage brain before mouth. She is acting as a bodyguard for a fairy when three gargoyles attack. Getting her charge to safety she wants to go and rescue the humans who are getting slaughtered. Only for the fairy to try and stop her. Perhaps hitting her wasn't the best idea but stopping the gargoyles was. Now she's suspended without pay, overdue on her rent and broke. Can things get any worse. Of course they can. The Conclave is now investigating her for showing magic to humans, someone has put a contract out on her, an angel wants her to steal the Sword of Destiny, a superhero wants her to find a rogue, a cloak is telling her what to do and she has to gain her Master of Sorcery certificate! Can she do all that, some of it or none?
I'm dropping the first book one star because the hero was just too pathetic during the first half of the book which reduced my enjoyment. It got a lot better by the end and the second book is fantastic so I'm glad I stuck it out (almost didn't as I read a lot of books). Part of the problem is she, the hero, just doesn't know when to shut up and was constantly making things worse while her inside voice was accurately pointing out it wasn't helping. A little of that is fine, a lot of the other books with male leads have a bit of this, but I found it hard to reconcile all the snark with her being the best agent in her firm, the two would seem to cancel each other out particularly when she is snarking a client or her boss. So this one was a bit of a mess but it did moderate by the end of the book and the second book was well balanced so worth the time it takes to read this one. (Typically I read a book like this in a day, this one took me a week because I kept putting it down after getting upset).
I found a new world and I am a fan of it. Sorcery, super heroes, hoy relics and snark! This book touched on so many loves of mine. As someone once said, “sarcasm makes everything better, it’s like butter without the calories.”
I am very impressed with my first introduction to this writer and then I read an excerpt from one of his other books and will immediately but that and start it. I love the fast pace, the great dialogue and the sense of anticipation I get for what will happen next. I’m a new fan for sure. I did some thing I almost never do, I joined a mailing list.
Sorceress super hero by Darius Brasher is a solid 4 star read. The humor is a bit dry but if you like that kind of thing, this is your jam. Personally I like the 'snort coffee out my nose' type humor. The story revolves around a body guard sorceress who is a bit of an outcast and has a shopping problem as well as a bit of self control problem. She throat punches her client and gets suspended from her job. Shenanigans ensue with rat shifters, a fallen angel, and some real life super heroes who are all gunning for our heroine for different reasons. A cool book with a unique premise and I can recommend.
SO THIS IS GOOD. WE HAVE A SORCERESS WHO HAS DENIED HER POWERS AND REFUSED TO LIVE UP TO HER ABIITIES DUE TO A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE WHEN SHE WAS 16. I THINK SHE SUFFERS FROM PTSD, SHE SEEMS TO BE SELF SABOTAGING.
WE SEE SOME WERERATS. YUCK. OF ALL THE WERE CREATURES IN ALL THE FANTASY WORLDS I HAVE READ, JUST NO. COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT THAT.
BUT I THINK OUR GIRL HAS TURNED OVER A NEW LEAF. EVEN THOUGH I AM STILL HAVING A LITTLE TROUBLE WITH THE WHOLE METAHUMAN, GIFTED, SUPERHERO VS MAGICAL CONCEPTS, I WILL GET THERE. IF WE HAVE A SEQUEL. I WANT A SEQUEL BECAUSE WE MEET HER MOTHER AT THE VERY END AND NOW I WANT TO KNOW WHY .
I really enjoyed this book. Sage is a well thought out character. Sadly, I can easily identify with her impulsiveness, inner dialogues, and anger issues. In the beginning she seemed a bit immature and I wasn't sure I was going to stick with the book, but I hate to give up on any book. I'm glad I kept reading. Seeing her work on herself and help others while struggling with the issues she has was impressive. That ending did not go where I thought it was going which makes the book even better. I'm not going to share what I thought was going to happen because I don't want to spoil It for future readers. I am looking forward to the next book!!
This is literally the best superhero stories I have come across in a while!! I loved it & the characters!! Our main character has so many emotions it's literally a beautiful journey to go on & her love interest Ghost?!? Yes please!! I really hope you write a second book. I need more. Maybe you can find a way for pick to literally become one with her instead of being the cloak? Also what it her mother is not a sorceress but another magical being, like a demon? Considering pick was like do I smell sulfur and brimstone?!? Loved it!!!!
I clicked on this book via a Facebook ad and read the blurb on Amazon so I got curious and downloaded it. This is the first book I've read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised. Sage is a wonderful character and easy to relate to because the author has done a wonderful job of making her a real person with flaws. The story is fast-paced and will keep you turning the page to find out what happens next. I certainly do hope there is a sequel to this one, I would love to see more of Sage.
I gave this 5 stars due to it's awesome badassery (yeah I know that's not a word) I adore strong female MC's, the magic mixed with supers was was chocolate drizzle icing on my cake! The writing was witty, and well out together. The jokes and wise cracks had me crying, so much so my GF bugged me to explain! I also loved the way the MC handled her tribulations. Mrs. Brasher you have superb writing chops. I highly recommend this book to those with a love of magic and supes. Please write another!!! I'll donate 100 gold talents.
I really enjoyed this book. Sage is more kind of sarcastic . She's got a good heart , but is all kinds of impulsive and it gets her in trouble. A lot of trouble. I can't wait to see where the story goes. Complete story, the last sentence is more a foreshadowing for next book. Though technically a cliffhanger. It's not the kind I'd stop reading a series because of. This could also be called the misadventures of Sage, possibly throw in Puck as well. Looking forward to the next.
Mr. Brasher has 3 series set in the same wonderful world. It has alternate history, metahumans, and other preturnaturals hiding behind a veil. Perfect for an RPG game. Unfortunately his MC's are all so unlikable in some way that the series just isn't fun to read. Hero's need to be worthy of emulation, honest, trustworthy, intelligent enough to have common sense, responsible, and willing to take risks for the greater good. Each of his MC lacks more than one of those traits. They may be realistically human characters but only if you have no faith in humanity.
I always enjoy the books written in the setting of this world. I was thrilled to have a new hero introduced and the cameos of existing characters I know and love. Would have been nice to see a bit of Truman Lord, a character I really enjoy. Read this book in two sittings, which is a shame since I have to wait now for the authors next book.
Darius Brasher is one of my favorite authors, and never fails to deliver an entertaining read.
We get the main character in the midst of chaos and growing pains, but not much of the result. Not a bad writing style or story line, but the world she lives in needs to be a bit more defined. On another note, I hate cliff hangers. If the writing is good, one need not pull this to get one to read the next in the series. Besides, there were enough unresolved issues without pulling in a long list family member at the end.
This turned out to be an all right book. If only the lead character didn't make the most idiotic decisions possible. Every idea she came up with was wrong. Her stupidity and childishness lasted almost to the end of the book. The story itself was good and I had to find out if she ever made any good decisions. Like I said a good story with an exasperating lead character. But she grows on you.
I am not a super hero book reader. But I love urban fantasy books so when I realised that this book was very much magical I thought I'd give it a read. So glad I did. The homour in this book is fantastic the story very interesting. The world created is unique. I really like the characters and loved that the main character really developed by the end. No naughty stuff just an interesting story line.
Whilst the plot was a little obvious and the info dumps were a little yawn, I really enjoyed this book. The mix of magic and heroes was interesting. Sage is a kick ass heroine and I think I need to see if anything happens between her and Ghost. Favourite character was Puck.
Never read this Author and saw an advert on good old FB and thought I'd give it read and really glad that I did. Love IF anyway so that was always going done a good start but I really enjoyed the characters and snort laughed quite a few times. Bring on book two!
I didn't know what to expect when i started reading, not normally into reading about superheroes, but it was fantastic! I loved the main character she was funny, witty and i would love to read what happens next. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the supernatural and superheroes all rolled into one. Please write more!
I loved this book! It blends two of my favorite genres together. Sage is a kickass character with issues and a heart. The combination of magic, biblical, and superhero lore made this a great read. As soon as I finished I was looking for the next book.
I really really wanted to give this 5* but it fell just a little short on the characters. You have your feisty yet vulnerable heroine, with a side kick and potential love interest. It has an interesting start and a strong finish it's just the middle that lets it down.
If you want to see a person grow and become a hero in truth then this book hits the mark. I love how the character turned her life around from a self absorbed magician to a more adult acting world concerned person when it really counts. Kudos on this novel a must read in fantasy.
I'm so glad for Amazon Unlimited because without it I wouldn't have discovered this new author. I loved it. It's a quick read with enough action to make your head spin. The heroine is very relatable and the plot is a good solid one. There are definitely enough elements to build a solid, enjoyable series.
I have to admit I was skeptical about this book at first. But as things went along it got more interesting. I would love for more books to be written, and really with the ending the way it is there should be.
Super heroes and magic. I was intrigued in how the author would weave the two worlds to and was not disappointed. I've never read the other super hero novels, but I think I will now. :)
This was a really cool read. The book is well written and very entertaining. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in superheroes and fantasy books, urban fantasy that is.
I have read through all of this author's books and thought they are great but this was by far my favourite. Great characters and a fantastic plot make this highly enjoyable.
I actually took a bit of a chance on this book, but it definitely turned out well worth the reading. My biggest complaint is that there is no sequel yet😬. However, I definitely recommend it for everyone😀.
Super fun read. I enjoyed the storyline and Sage's emotional growth through the course of events. I always love some humor with my adventure and this book had plenty. Definitely hope to see more in this series.
