The book that pulled me out from a multiple-months long reading slump...
4.5 stars
I made a trip to Porto this year, and I immediately fell in love with the city (which does not happen that often with me and new places), the whole vibe... and it was partly because of the azulejos (and meeting a really nice freelancer colleague of mine :) ). They do create a certain athmosphere, warm and welcoming, classic and bohemian at the same time... they have character. I am a sucker for some good applied art, not denying it :).
I fell in love with azulejos so much that I purchased this book to learn a bit more about the history - and to have some really good quality pictures of these gorgeous tiles to look at when I want some artistic inspiration or to just look at something truly stunning.
The actual design of the book is gorgeous, too, such a little jewelry box of a book!
I found it quite a nice beginner's guide - easy to digest, focusing on the basics, explaining the history and the sytles in a pretty succient way. Of course, if you have some background knowledge already, you might find the text / facts part a bit superficial, but for me, it was quite decent. What I was missing a bit is more examples (images) for certain types az azulejos and a little bit more explanations of some points made (I was missing some more picture examples of the "invitation figure" azulejos and I wanted to receive a bit more context about what sort of institutions or stores used them and how).
