The book "Pendomus (Pendomus Chronicles # 1)" by Carissa Andrews is a solid piece with an intriguing story. Fleeing from destruction, the earthlings inhabited the planet Pendomus. The story takes place many years later, people live in the city of Helix and everyone is connected via e-link. Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem steps outside Helix exploring a bird and a strange tree. Soon she is attacked by an unknown creature, but she saved by an unknown stranger. From that moment on, her world began to change, everything she knew scattered like sand towers. She is confused because no one lives out of town. How then appeared that the stranger, who saved her life? What is the real truth, she will have to discover. But because of the truth, her life will be momentarily in present danger, and the survival of the entire planet Pendomus will depend on her actions. The book is written for YA, but it has an intriguing SF story.
I found this quite interesting and intriguing. It did take me a little bit to get into, but I can't wait to read book 2 now. Runa has quite a heavy burden for one young girl, that grew up without parental love. She grew up in what's called the helix, the place where you don't really have choices. She is not living in the helix anymore, but luckily has found some other young people that help her and they become friends. Runa right now needs to save her brother, then the world. I look forward to finding out how Runa will accomplish her tasks, and go on what I'm sure will be a roller coaster ride. So I'm going to buckle up and start book 2.
I simply loved this book. It starts out interesting and goes into fantastic. Carissa Andrews has a way of describing a scene that puts the reader there. Her characters are described in a way that you want to be their friend. It's a magical journey from the moment you read page one! And, it doesn't stop.
At A Glance Started out great then got childish and boring.
The Good The concept of Pendomus really caught my eye because I have been into dystopians lately. I was surprised with the amazing integration of fantasy/sci-fi too. I love books that mix up the genres.
Runa is such an interesting character. I loved her naivety but strong will. She gets emotional sometimes but I understood why. Her life has changed so drastically in a small amount of time. I giggled as her feelings for Traeton grew and she didn't know what to do with them. She has lived in a society where romantic feelings don't exist, so you can imagine how confusing attraction could be.
I loved the side characters. Fenton and Kani brought so much to this book. Fenton is fun-loving and mischievous and Kani is surly but strong. I loved their banter the most though
The Bad In the beginning, the POV shifts confused me. I thought Traeton was a girl for the longest time because he just pops up with no info or backstory. And sometimes I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. Details and better structure was needed.
There is very little world-building. I never got a good feel for the world and the people in it. We barely spend anytime in the Helix, so it never really scared me like it should have.
The second half just got plain boring for me. Not a lot happens and there was never a sense of direction with the plot or characters. It also got too juvenile for me. I found myself rolling my eyes over the dialogue and drama.
The Snuggly I thought Runa and Traeton were so cute in the beginning but then Traeton did that whole "I need to distance myself because of blah, blah, blah," and treated Runa like crap. I wasn't feeling their relationship by the end. But I will admit, they had some adorable moments with great sexual tension.
Very YA sexual content.
Final Thoughts I will not be continuing this series. Pendomus just didn't click with me. It started out good and went downhill with each chapter. But I can see a younger reader maybe enjoying this more. Only recommended for heavy YA readers.
Quotes “Traeton, what do you know about the tree you found me in?” I ask.
He shifts slightly and says, “Uh, not much. That was the first time I’d noticed the tree before. It was sorta weird, though.”
“How do you mean?” I ask, sliding my foot into my boot and letting it constrict to my size.
“Well, besides the standing water--” Trae raises a hand to his forehead and taps it gently as he thinks. “The tree itself, though . . . There was something unusual about it. Like it had a mind of its own.”
I stop in mid-step of the next boot. “A mind of its own?”
Relief floods my body as my curiosity piques. He’s had his own experiences with the tree.
“Yeah. When I was trying to get you out, the water rose and basically flushed us out of the tree. Then it froze solid.”
It was a very enjoyable read, however many things happened too fast and that made it less remarkable. I’m still curious to see where it will lead and if maybe the next books can surprise me.
Pendomus gets a mixed reaction from me. I liked it up until Videous entered the picture. I really like Runa and Trae, as well as Fenton. I even kind of liked Kani but many of the other characters were not likeable or developed enough to care one way or the other.
All I can say about this book was that it had me interested from the moment I started reading it. Runa the main character is going to learn alot about herself and her environment pretty quickly and she needs to for reasons unknown to her right now. I am anxious to read the next book in this series.
Runa breaks free from her oppressive life inside the Helix and discovers the larger, bizarre, and more dangerous world of Pendomus. A fast and engaging read!
The book is written from the point of view of Runa a girl who grew up in the Helix but has always been different with pale blonde hair and amber eyes. We also have Traeton's perspective his life outside the helix and when he saves Runa their lives are forever intertwined. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about these two but as the story progressed they grew on me.
Aside from the pretty cover– oh c’mon admit it, this cover is AMAZING– this book caught my eye because of its premise. It just sounded so… so interesting. With a promise of adventure, action and mystery, I couldn’t wait to dive right in.
Having always been different, in obvious ways like her appearance but also with her curiosity and drive be outside the Helix. Runa is brutally attacked shortly after her decision to the leave, waking up in pain and disoriented. She is thrust into a whole new world where people have survived outside the Helix. With changes at every corner and new feelings surface, Runa, with the help of a few new friends, searchers for answers.
The world building and lore behind Pendomus was unbelievable. Carissa has such a vivid imagination and the details she painted for us was so remarkably done. Helix, a “compound” for the humans that have survived Pendomus, has top-notch technology and the depths of the control makes for one terrifying place to live. I mean, they control everything. EVERYTHING. I loved that this was a cross between fantasy and sci-fi. It’s always fun to see what angle the author is going to take the story and Pandomus was pretty different and fascinating. I also thought the underlining meaning of the book was beautiful. There is a difference between living and surviving.
Told from both from Runa’s and Trae’s POV, we get to see how Runa is adjusting to living outside the Helix, her trials and triumphs. And with Trae, we see his internal battle with himself to walk away and how’s he lived outside the Helix. Runa is brave, determined and very head strong. She always knew she was different– just not HOW different. She is very curious about the world outside the Helix and I thought she took everything pretty well. Her search for answers leads to several twists and turns and I was pretty floored. There’s a lot to learn about Pendomus and Runa. Trae, having living outside the Helix for years, is the person that rescues Runa after her attack. He’s strong, smart, yet is determined to keep Runa at arm’s length regardless of his feelings. Having grown up in the Helix and witnessing a few horrific things, he knows the full-scale in which the Helix operates. Their feelings for each other developed a little too fast for my liking, but the chemistry was there and I can’t wait to see more of these two in the future.
We also have Fenton and Kani, two others that live outside the Helix with Trae. Kani was difficult to like at first. I understood her hesitations about Runa and her fear, but she came off a little too strong. Fenton, was probably the hardest character to “understand”. He fakes an accent, thinking it was more or less “cool” and it was really hard to figure out what he was saying. I was hoping for more… about all the other characters. So, here’s hoping for more in the sequel.
My Peeve- Hmm, well, it took a while to figure out exactly WHAT was going on. We are given small details here and there and the story progresses, but not the full background until the end. The ending left me with SO MANY questions about what was going on.
Overall- I really enjoyed it! Pendomus is well done weave of fantasy and sci-fi, with remarkable world building that was just fascinating. Full of action and mystery, Pendomus is a wild ride full of twist and turns that will keep you engrossed until the end. I recommended it!

This started off good but then it got a bit confusing. On a roll I didn't know this was going to be told in two point of views so I got confused once I started reading Traetons first chapter. But once I figured it out, it became less confusing. However there are still some confusing parts, lack of detail here and there, so this needs to go through another round of edits to make everything more clearer.
Pendomus moves quickly and this quickness makes me feel disconnected to Runa, our main gal. In the beginning we get a glimpse at her life in the Helix but then we're shipped off to Traetons point of view, so we don't get to see her leaving her world behind. By the summary and the hint in the chapter, Mrs. Andrews tells you Runa is leaving I just wished we got to see that, or at least got to see it through flashbacks. So throughout the story I never felt any true connection to Runa, sometimes I just didn't care. I'm glad she's fine after that horrible attack in the beginning but other than that the pacing for Runa was just too fast for me to truly care for her. For all that she was going through.
Now Traeton, I was able to easily care for him. His story unfolded perfectly and I was able to connect with him. I was able to truly feel the physical attraction he had towards Runa, I was able to feel the protectiveness he had towards her. It was interesting to see him battle within himself about her, he's the type to not want to get connected to anyone. His past tells us why and it saddens me that he has to go through such a thing. So when he finally lets himself show this passion towards her you just can't help but swoon, even though it's of course shown at the wrong moment in time haha.
Overall this was an interesting tale. But the sad thing is, if I continue reading this series I'm only really curious to see what happens to Traeton and Kani (she's a stubborn, strong ass secondary character whom goes through hell at the end). In the sequel I feel like Runa really needs to win my heart. I mean for me, I feel like Traeton and the two secondary characters really shone in this book. Oh Fenton, you and your silly accent, yet I fell for you even though you're quite the pervert sometimes haha.
Besides the fun characters the plot line did hook me, some areas stronger than others but nonetheless I did enjoy this tale. With its society of holding back hormones, with the creepy Labots that kind of remind me of some things from the terminator series, and with its little twist and turns. I'm definitely more interested in the subplots than the actual storyline, though.
P.S this has quite a few edit problems. Some words missing from sentences, some words are in sentences that don’t belong there, some misspelled words. I wouldn’t have said anything but since my copy I believe is a proof copy, I feel the need to say these things as these edits bugged me immensely which is one of the reasons why I’ve given this story only 3.5 Bats.
I had so much fun with this book! Carissa Andrews created a fascinating, gorgeously imagined world full of interesting new technology, cool gadgets and secrets. The Sci Fi parts can be quite overwhelming at times, but once you get used to the lingo and all the unfamiliar names of places and things, you'll definitely appreciate Andrews creativeness. The world development is top-notch and I couldn't help but be impressed with how thorough and detailed Andrew's vision was. She re-imagined almost everything, from the way people communicate, eat and sleep to the way they look and interact with each other. I had so much fun learning all the ins and outs of this bizarre yet completely mesmerizing world of Helix! I particularly loved the idea of the regenerative sleep therapy (let's call it a "power nap", shall we?). I mean, how cool would it be to have a machine that could completely recharge your brain in 5 to 30 minutes?! No more sleeping for hours! So much more time for reading!
At the same time, while life inside the Helix was definitely intriguing, I loved reading about the outside world and the people who lived in it! Andrews descriptions of both worlds were very detailed, at times even mind-blowing. I loved the contrast between these two worlds and the mystery behind the planet. Andrews did a fantastic job creating an entire new mythology, complete with eye-popping fauna and flora.
The characters in Pendomus were really well developed, too. Some were badass and mysterious while others were quirky and downright hilarious. I had so much fun getting to know them all! I liked the lead female protagonist, Runa, and thought she was quite a kick-ass chick. At times I felt sorry for her, especially when seeing how cold her mom was towards her and how much that hurt her. She was so different from everyone around her, so much more emotional and sensitive. She was also very thoughtful and clever, and she wanted more from life than the cold-hearted Helix society could offer. I loved that she was not afraid to search for answers and that she was willing to sacrifice her comfortable life to find them.
I really liked Traeton, too! I think I enjoyed reading the chapters written in his POV a tiny bit more than the ones in Runa's. He was such a fun and colorful character, and I loved seeing the world through his eyes. Not to mention his rebellious blue-hair look and hilarious inner-thoughts and monologues.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I didn't necessarily feel very emotionally affected by this story, but it was definitely a quick and entertaining read. Pendomus has quite a complex, well thought-out plot line. It's a very fast-paced read that could easily be finished in one afternoon. In fact, once you start reading, it's really hard to put it down, as there are twists and turns at every corner and you just have to keep going to find out what will happen next. It's quite a breathless read for sure! I'm looking forward to the second book!
Pendomus is a book that can best be described as bizarre. This is a multi-genre book if ever I read one and yet somehow this works to create a masterpiece of sorts. Told from differing points of view the story follows Runa and Trae on this journey across Pendomus trying to uncover a plot that might bring salvation or destruction to them all.
One of things I really enjoyed about this book was the incredibly world building. The Authors imagination clearly knows no bounds. I could picture every structure, every rocky outcropping and snow flaked tundra perfectly. The details are packed into this story and yet I never felt overwhelmed by them.
Another thing I liked was the technology. It felt fresh and unique to this story. The way the system of Pendomus runs might be a technological achievement of sorts but I just found it terrifying. The rulers of Pendomus control every little facet of life. The humans don't even sleep anymore they just sit in a chair get zapped by some machine and like good little drones get right back to work. Nor do they utilize speech. Why bother when you can just communicate telepathically.
Now while both those things really worked for me Pendomus is not without faults.
First off, because the story constantly swaps back and forth between Runa and Trae's point of view I never really felt like I had the chance become as intimately connected to either character as I would of liked.
Secondly, the pacing is all over the place. This book read like a roller coaster. When it was up it was terrifying and wondrous but when it dropped down cruising at an even speed I found myself bored and skimming through the scenes.
Lastly, I felt the book took way to long to reveal information about the plot. We get little bits and pieces as the story progresses but it's not until we reach well over the halfway mark before we see any real evidence of what is going on. I think this story really would of benefited from a prequel instead of trying to cram in all this history of the colony and the world with that of Runa and Trae's relationship with each other and that of the colony. So much world building (which again I do love) left little room for character and story development.
Final Thoughts While I highly enjoyed Pendomus I did find myself struggling at times to stick with the story. If you love films like Avatar or the Matrix or books like Feed, Divergent or Starters then I'd definitely suggest picking this one up and giving it a go. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and seeing where Runa's story heads now that she's equipped with new knowledge about Pendomus and herself. With that being said, I'll be rating Pendomus by Carissa Andrews ★★★★.
Carissa Andrews paints perfect literary art. There... I said it. During the opening chapter, it became ever so obvious to me that she has a very poetic mind. It reminded me of a time when I was writing articles for commission, and I wrote a piece entitled "Art VS Fart." It entailed my own failings as a writer, which were just a small addition to the overall categories of various arts. Included in it was a statement that I find to be true, even if I am a bag of hot air. That statement was:
"There are storytellers, and there are artists in writing. Either can tell a story, but the artist tells it dramatically and with precise metaphoric detail. The words are beautiful or terrifying, the description so absolute you can feel it in your bones, no matter the mood of the description or the interpreter of the words." My opinion is that this story is fantastic. It revolves around a character who has just made the decision to separate herself from the new design of human society, one that parallels the society in Equilibrium, a movie starring Christian Bale. Her separation comes with a flood of emotion she's never felt, a realization of forces she has never known, and a truth she never expected. Her escape from human society "opens her eye" to a world unknown.
The story is unique and takes its time letting you in on its secrets. Whenever I thought maybe I had it figured out, I would quickly realize otherwise. This happened several times; eventually I gave up trying, and just read until I absorbed everything I possibly could, not wanting to fool myself again. There were icky love chapters that held my attention somewhat less, but I never felt that they stole anything from the Pendomus story. After all, the main character is feeling these emotions for the first time in her life. Eerily, I think those moments even added to the feeling. These are not words that you will find I say frequently.
My only criticism is that I never did learn the origins of the elemental beasts, which are magnificent creatures with indeterminable power. They made their appearance and they will clearly be making more, but they are only partially explained in nature. On the upside, this work seems to be one of many, so I suppose there is time for her to elaborate later. It all comes together in the end, building up into an epic that will live on in other installations. I think Carissa Andrews is a great author, and I think the Pendomus books will be recognized as fine literature in the young adult dark fantasy genre.
*I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.*
The synopsis for this book got me interested right from the beginning. I was intrigued by humans living on a different planet, and how this extremely scientific society ran. I got some of this, but I also received an interesting romance, action, and some not-so-expected fantasy elements.
This book was told in two points of view. Runa was really the main character though, and she narrates most of the chapters. I found that I quite liked her stubbornness to do what she wanted, instead of what the Helix wanted her to do. I thought it was a bit odd for her to question everything when everyone that she lived with did not, but I suppose that has to do with who and what Runa is.
The other main character was Traeton. He had an intriguing backstory, to go along with his vulnerability and helpfulness. I thought that he and Runa worked well together as a couple, although the attraction was a bit too instantaneous for my taste.
The side characters in the story were an interesting bunch. I loved Kani, even though she seemed totally different when we first met her. She turned into a wonderfully determined, headstrong character. Fenton was great too, with his unique way of talking, and his lightheartedness. I thought Runa's brother was a bit mean, but then we didn't get to see him too often throughout the story. Either way, Kani and Fenton helped to give the book elements of friendship and humor.
The plot of the book was interesting. It turned from a headstrong girl wanting to escape a high-tech society, into something that was a mix of fantasy and sci-fi. It was interesting how the two genres were blended together, especially since the book is set on a different planet, allowing the author to invent a new mythology. I thought it made for a pretty good story, and I read the book much faster than I intended to.
Overall, this was an interesting story. The fantasy elements weren't all that original, as far as being a bit like other stories I've read. Still, I thought the technology was interesting, and I liked the idea of trying to escape a controlling technologically advanced society. There were some good characters, and interesting action scenes. The story blended sci-fi and fantasy elements well, and kept me interested throughout. Therefore, if you're looking for something a bit different and you read YA, check this one out.
I received Pendomus in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours. Runa lives on the planet Pendomus in a Helix complex where she lives with her mother and brother. She hasn’t gotten her professional placement so she’s had time to fall in love with the forest. When she at last gets the call for her placement she’s shocked to learn that she’s been giving the job of cremator. Furious she heads out into the snow but is attacked by a morph when it looks like the end she’s saved by a blue haired stranger who takes her back to him place.
Runa learns that there is more outside the helix than just snow. Growing up inside the Helix complex everything has been provided to them via the government their every move monitored by scans. They don’t even speak anymore they use the elink to communicate. As Runa heals from her attack, she is befriended by Traeton the blue haired guy who saved her life and lives outside the helix. She learns that there is more going on outside the complex. With Traeton’s help she will attempt to uncover the secrets risking her life to learn the truth.
The book is written from the point of view of Runa a girl who grew up in the Helix but has always been different with pale blonde hair and amber eyes. We also have Traeton’s perspective his life outside the helix and when he saves Runa their lives are forever intertwined. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about these two but as the story progressed they grew on me.
I was instantly enchanted by the concept for Pendomus. I’m a huge fan of the sci fi concept so of course this one was a must when I saw the tour invite. I like the concept for Pendomus it’s unique and captivates the imagination. Plus with a cover like that how can you not be curious. I found the characters easy to connect with after getting to know them. I liked that the author has giving us each perspective I think it helps keep the story flowing. I think the author did an amazing job of creating a world unlike any other with interesting characters. I was instantly drawn into the story; I actually finished it in one afternoon. It’s a fast paced story that is filled with twist and turns that keep you guessing till the end. I really enjoyed the first book and look forward to seeing what happens in the next one.
I love reading books of which I have heard nothing. It adds an element of surprise that can’t be beaten. No reviews to sway my opinion, no friends telling me to (or not to) read. It’s a clean slate. I’ve been on a bit of a sci-fi kick lately, so the synopsis called to me and I was excited to dig in. Alien planet, advanced technology, malfunctioning society. YES PLEASE! With the first chapter, I was all Ooh! The second chapter I was all Huh? I keep feeling like I was missing something. Was this the second book in the series and I didn’t know it? I did catch on though, and MAN! It’s such a fun read! With the lack of facts at the beginning, I kind of hit the ground running, but once I got my feet under myself and had some of the fundamentals figured out, I really enjoyed the ride! It’s not a long story, and was non-stop excitement and intrigue. The characters are solid and interesting with their own individual quirks. In some cases, though, I felt as though the quirks were almost too obvious, as though the author were trying to make their voices distinct from each other. Granted, it certainly makes the conversations more clear, as I can more easily tell who’s talking. Pendomus is classified as being YA, and I love how Andrews manages to keep it within that category, while still allowing her characters to speak freely. She uses the word “phug”, instead of its more vulgar (and frowned upon) alternative. The intent is still crystal clear, while it keeps parents perfectly happy. Well played! The book’s downfall, in my opinion, is that I am probably going to have to wait a long time for the sequel. I am worried that in the meantime, I will forget about Pendomus and my excitement over the series. If I had had the sequel in my hands, I would have jumped into it right away. My hope is that someone will remind me about the sequel. Can I sign up for an alarm that goes off when the next book is published?
A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the author and Xpresso Book tours for my read-to-review copy. The following review is my honest opinion and I have not been compensated in any way for it!
A highly imaginative young adult science fiction tale, PENDOMUS grasped my attention immediately with is descriptive settings and interesting technology such as the e-link. While that is totally unappealing to me in many ways, except perhaps for the vast amount of reading and knowledge I could have in an instant, the sleep chamber thing is a total dream come true for those of us who need more hours in the day to read!
Runa hasn't fit in with her Helix counterparts since she was born. Maybe it's the fact that she has light eyes and white hair whereas everyone else has brown hair and brown eyes, the darker melanin helping to cope with the environment. She loves being outside of the Helix, practicing her words instead of relying on the e-link. I disliked her brother Baxten and her distant mother. I disliked her brother because he told her that the reason the mother is distant is simply because Runa was born, reminiscing about the mother she USED to be before Runa. That's a crappy thing to say to your younger sister; she didn't ask to be born! Jerk.
Excited about her Professional Day and fully expecting a professional assignment to take her outdoors, she is shocked instead to receive a token telling her she is to something completely anathema to her personality. No one can change what you've been assigned in this ordered society; so Runa runs outside of the Helix.
Once outside, Runa is attacked by the Morph and found by Trae, a human living outside of the Helix. She had no idea there were so many humans on the outside or how they survived. And she is in a rude awakening about her RationCaps and all the things that they suppress and brainwash. It is quite an adventure story with a huge dose of destiny; Runa's fate has been written and now she needs to get it in action.
I am looking forward to reading more and see what becomes of Runa and Pendomus!
I won't deny that it was the synopsis that drew me to Pendomus in the first place. It had a decidedly sci fi feel to it, and I was intrigued by the fact that it revolved around humans who had colonized another planet. While it took a bit for me to fall in line with the characters and their story, Pendomus did impress me. It's a different read, and that alone kept me reading on.
I wasn't expecting Pendomus to be told in two different points of view. Runa is the main character, and narrates most of the chapters, but Traeton narrates as well. I liked Runa straight off. Her passion for nature spoke to me. I was excited to see where it would take her. Then Traeton came into the picture, and I fell in love. Sweet and helpful, he was the perfect yin to Runa's yang. Although I thought their relationship moved a little too quickly, they absolutely work well together.
In all honesty, it was the plot that initially lost me. Things started moving quickly, and I found myself floundering for the first few chapters. Instead of building up Runa's home, and Traeton's life, Pendomus throws you straight into the fray. It took me a while to find my bearings, to start to uncover why Runa was against Helix, and to understand why Traeton would want to live separate from the others. It is an odd start, but it all converged into an interesting story. Being set on a different planet allows the characters to have their own societal norms and their own mythology. Once I found my footing, I enjoyed it all.
I'd say that readers of both Fantasy and Science Fiction will find a lot to enjoy in Pendomus. As long as you're willing to take the beginning with a grain of salt and keep reading on, you'll find a solid story between these pages. The copy I read had a few grammatical issues, but it was an advanced copy. The author informed me that the finished copy is great! Add this to your reading list if you're looking for something to whisk you away to a brand new place.
Sometimes, I think authors must really struggle to find a way to make their novels a bit different from all the others in their chosen genre, different enough to make their stories stand out from the crowd. Carissa Andrews has found a way.
The blending of science fiction and pure fantasy works well in Pendomus and the author’s imagination has taken flight in unexpected ways. Runa is a girl of complexity, particularly because she so clearly doesn’t fit in the world she was born into. Helix is a cold place in terms of emotion and personal connection but her mother’s lack of any real attachment to her daughter is not only surprising but also is at the core of Runa’s perhaps subconscious desire to find a better life.
When the time comes for Runa to resist the total control of Helix, she certainly doesn’t expect to find herself in a world of great beauty and freedom and real danger. Most of all, perhaps, she doesn’t expect to find friendship and a completely new way of looking at life.
I enjoyed Runa’s discovery of the potential humans have when not totally controlled by a rigid state and the people she first meets—Traeton, Fenton and Kani—show her that there is much more to life than she has ever guessed. Especially appealing to me was Runa’s introduction to the pleasures of existence that Helix has removed, such as the taste of real food, natural sleep and romantic feelings towards a young man with defiantly blue hair.
Worldbuilding is somewhat thin and more than a little confusing and I wish that there was not such a quick attraction between Runa and Traeton but I did like the four main characters. The only other concern I have is that much tighter editing is needed but it’s entirely possible that my reading copy was a pre-production edition and that the real thing is up to snuff.
Check out the book tour, you can read an excerpt if you want at my post, click the banner below to go to the post.
I really liked this very different sci-fi/paranormal type book. Its hard to really describe without really giving anything away.
I want to keep this spoiler free as well, as some of the shockers are what were the best parts of the story. I liked how the point of view would swap between the 2 main characters the female, Runa, and the male Trae, and I really liked both of them. It was a refreshing read for me, as it was so different and new for me.
I liked the mystery surrounding Runa as well, and some of the special things about her, again, do not want to spoil it for you.
This book is a well written one, and think anyone who likes a little different, or sci-fi/paranormal/dystopia in a YA Fantasy type, will love it as much as I did.
I highly recommend it, and give it 5 out of 5 stars. And also, how awesome is that cover too?? It’s amazing, and is what attracted me to the book in the first place.
I was given a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.
This story is told from two different POV. Runa, our heroine, is an anomaly. She is different and slightly unique. The world she lives in, Helix, revolves around a certain way of life and Runa is constantly questioning things. She loves to study their surrounding nature and hopes to continue doing so once she receives her placement. When she’s placed elsewhere she is disappointed and rebels even further, which leads to her being attacked and abandoned.
Then we have the stranger with the blue hair, Traeton. He is dependable and protective of Runa almost immediately. But he fears getting to close to anyone and getting hurt. The majority of the time we are seeing the story unfold through Runa’s eyes, and I struggled with her POV. Her mind’s eye would make some crazy jumps in the story that didn’t mesh. And although Traeton’s POV confused me at first, I enjoyed his POV more so.
The world building within Pendomus and Helix was very detailed and vivid. I could actually picture this odd world in my mind. The characters seemed too juvenile for the storyline though. There were some breaks in Runa’s timeline as well that threw me, it didn’t flow from one thing happening to the next. I almost enjoyed the secondary characters Fenton and Kani with a bad attitude, dry whitty sense of humor and banter more so than the main characters.
If you can get past the rocky start and the uneven flow of Runa’s story, you will get to enjoy the scenery and a fresh take on fantasy and sci-fi aspects of this book. I give this one 3/5 as I can see a lot of promise for this series if the author can just find her footing. Traeton is adorable and I have to see where Fenton and Kani end up.
** I received a copy of this book (ARC) from Book Nerd Tours in exchange for an honest review **
Humans no longer live on earth. They live on Pendomus and in a complex called Helix. The humans rarely talk and communicate with an elink. The government assigns jobs and Runa is sure she will get the job she wants. When she doesn't get that job she leaves the Helix. There she is attacked by a Morph and certain she is dying. She is saved by some people who live outside the Helix. She begins to heal and is told she is different from others and destined for other things. While she learns more about the world she lives on she makes some unusually friends. She has just begun her journey.
This book sounded intriguing from the blurb. Not to mention the amazing cover. It is book that combines scifi, action, some magical and in a way it is a dystopian world. The author does a great job combining all these things and you get a book you can't put down. I liked most of the characters and found myself very intrigued as I got to know them. I will say the first few chapter I was a little confused by what all was going on. after I got it figured out the book really took off for me. I love the pace of it and getting to know all the characters. Runa is amazing and at times in the beginning she seemed liked a child not understanding things. The only thing that would have made it better would have been more world building so you get an understanding right away. That would make a great prequel story though. I look forward to the next book in this series as I have to see what is in store for Runa next. I wonder what her journey will bring.
Pendomus is one crazy Sci-Fi read that I have ever read. I mean a world where everything is not what it seems. As I started reading I was so enthralled by a world that was so different but yet so similar in controlling the inhabitants of it.
On the planet Pendomus where there is either extreme cold or extreme heat life is like no other. Every thing on the planet is controlled by the government. You are assigned food, clothing and even your job. You have to obey the rules or there will be consequences. Runa is not normal she has different color eyes and hair color. She likes to do things outside the bubble because that is where she feels most comfortable.
The when Runa's turn is up to find out which job she will do she is given a job inside the bubble. She does not want this job because she does not want to be stuck in the bubble so she runs. When she runs outside the bubble she is attacked by the Morph and left for dead. But someone a stranger is there to help her and when she wakes up she is in a strange place with people she does not know. The stranger who has saved her is a human and Runa can't believe that there is life outside the bubble. But Trae saves her and helps her recover.
What Trae shows Runa next both scares her and baffles her because she has been taught one thing when in reality there is more. Will she comes to term with her new findings? I need book two like ASAP to find out what is popping that is how good this book is!
Pendomus Chronicles, book one by Carissa Andrews is a well written science fiction, fantasy story centered on the planet Pendomus. Humanity colonized and set up a complex known as the Helix where every thing is government controlled. A society functioning on humans fulfilling their purpose determined by natural appitudes and brain scans. This book contains adventure, action, and mystery with interesting characters which puts you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what will happen next. Now, with that out of the way. This is a great start in a new series as well as a new author to me. If you are a science fiction, fantasy lover you must check out this book. I would recommend it highly. A well spent afternoon read. Read and enjoy. I almost forgot, I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary honest review.
