Rachel spent 11 years studying and teaching philosophy at the universities of London and Oxford before joining Usborne. Since then she has written books on subjects ranging from knights, to food, to philosophy, as well as retelling folk stories, and writing children's versions of numerous novels.
I found this book really interesting. As always I like the way the information is presented. It is also very easy to absorb all the wonderful facts this book presents, and I often occupy my with these kind of books. Definitely recommend this book to anyone.
I am reading this book to my 7-year old for the second time (both times at his request). We have abandoned a few (very good) novels along the way, but I will be very surprised if we don't go through this book completely several more times before he outgrows it.
It's colourful with lots of fun illustrations. Most of the topics appeal to kids while still being educational (stinky Durian fruit, vitamin C and scurvy, selective breeding to generate sweet orange carrots, etc.) I haven't even caught much in the way of scientific errors (at most a couple of oversimplifications that don't bother me because it's a kids' book) - which means I don't have to rewrite sections on the fly and that makes for a happy scientist-mother. :-)
Absolutely fascinating and full of facts about food this book intrigued a foodie like me! Explaining things like how many bees it takes to pollinate an apple orchard, how food photographers keep the food looking so fresh (lipstick and motor oil anybody?), what was on the menu of the 7 course meal last served on the titanic and more, this book will be a favorite of knowledge hounds everywhere! I would recommend this fof ages 10 and up.
I still adore this series. We read one fact a night and while some of the facts are of the most random variety, others are everyday things you learn in school, this series is a fun way to plant little bite size bits of info in.
This book is 5 stars because of all the interesting facts. For example, "did you know that red food makes you hungry?". There are 99 other facts just as strange and odd as this one. I recommend this to people who are eager to learn more about the world.
Many interesting facts about food, presented with fun illustrations. But it's very disjointed. There's little in the way of an overarching point. I expect that most people would be likely to dip in and out for a bit rather than reading the whole thing through.
