Another meh entry in the Rick and Morty universe. There are riffs on alien abductions and Jurassic Park, and Summer Smith and Krombopulos Michael get some spotlight stories.

It's good for a Rick and Morty fix, but it's not a good Rick and Morty fix.

This volume had alien abduction, dinosaurs, and more focus on summer which was great fun. There were also some nice and colourful art moments with double spreads. I’m happy we got more summer focus, but I feel like her stories could have been even better, and there’s a lot of wasted potential when it comes to her (including in the show). I didn’t really like the story where she falls in love with the car.
The switched conciousness issue at the end was enjoyably mind trippy, but I did not like the incestuous consequence with beth and ‘jerry’, made me uncomfortable (too uncomfortable even for rick and morty)

Overall, I was convinced I would give this volume at least 4 stars but there were a couple things that knocked the score down.

Yet another great volume in this series! Honestly I think whether I rate them 4 or 5 stars is based on the position of the stars or something else equally irrelevant because they're all awesome but for some reason I feel like rating every single volume 5 stars is a bit ridiculous. This volume has quite a few stories that feature Summer more heavily than normal which I absolutely love, she doesn't get as many chances to shine as she should. Other one-shots include the family vacation from hell and Rick's very own Jurassic Park rip-off.

Some highlights:

I don't know why but this is just inexplicably hilarious to me

Review is for volumes 6-12 of the main series.

The art gets more inconsistent, an overreliance on retreaded side characters feels more lazy than it does a response to popular demand, and the laughs dwindle to a precious few. per issue.

A very funny an de-stressing one. Loved the concept art, seeing Summer taking more leadership and they all realising one more time family doesn’t have to be perfect in order to be the best!

The hilarity continues in a Volume that is mostly revolving around Rick's granddaughter Summer.
Stories here:
1) The family has just gone on a horrible summer vacation, when on their way home, they get abducted by aliens. When they go to Rick for help, they find that he has sent a robot avatar in his stead because he "wasn't stupid enough to go on vacation" with them. Disassembling "Rick-bot" into pieces yields them weapons that help them defend against the alien till the real Rick rescues them.

2) Summer, being bored one summer day, goes into the garage. There she uncovers the knowledge that in an alternate reality, she is extremely popular. Using the portal gun to go there, she knocks out that universe's Summer, taking her place. Going to the mall with her new friends, she finds out that in this universe, Summer is gay and starting a relationship with the most popular girl in school. Accepting that as her new reality, she is eventually stopped by the correct Summer, and rescued by Rick. It turns out that she is popular because that universe's Beth (the mom) is a great mom, supporting Summer and causing her to grow up with confidence and strength. Oh yeah.... and there is no Morty there...

3) Krombopulos Michael is an assassin who loves killing, getting his weapons from a young C-137 Rick. Rick talks to him about falling in love, but Michael isn't having it. When he meets a lady and falls for her, he puts most of his killing behind him and dedicates his life to her. But when an accident from a Morty kills him, his bride finds the weapons and swears revenge.

4) Rick takes Morty and Summer to Mesozorick Park, a parody of Jurassic Park, where Rick is friends with all the dinosaurs. The park never took off so Rick mostly abandoned it. However, when 3 employees still alive reveal that they have been living there alone for 20 years, they kidnap Rick and threaten a lot of hilarious things (like feed him his butthole). Summer dresses as Rick and convinces the dinosaurs to attack, saving Rick.

5) Summer takes the flying car out for a joyride, activating the AI and enjoying the attention that the car gives her. When she gets home, Rick warns her not to fall in love with the car. Summer gets angry, alters the AI of the car, giving it full sentience so they can have conversation and REALLY connect. She finds out the hard way that certain relationships aren't meant to last forever, and Rick uses a bomb to destroy the car.

6) A short story where Rick has swapped the identities of the family members back and forth many times. Typical slightly confusing meta story.

Reading these Volumes is always like watching episodes. I can't wait for Season 4 to premiere!
High recommend.

This was overall fairly typical of the series. Lot's of shenanigans. While his stories are fun, I was once again disappointed with Starks artwork on one of the issues. Otherwise a solid addition to a fun series.

By far the best collection in the series (at the point of me having read the first 8).

This is definitely one of the stronger volumes in the Kyle Starks era of the series, but still not quite four-star material. There was a lot to love about this one. I liked how much it focused on Summer, because I think she’s one of the most interesting characters in the series, and she doesn’t get the spotlight very often. She gets some really important development (🌈🌈🌈) in this volume.

Plot-wise, this was pretty strong too. Each of the issues had a coherent flow, which is more than I can say for a lot of what I’ve read by Starks, and each individual adventure is super-fun.

Where this fails for me, though, is that I don’t think Rick is being written very well here. In the show, and in earlier comics by Zac Gorman, Rick is definitely mean to everyone, especially those closest to him, a lot of the time. However, there will be these little moments that show the place of deep pain his meanness comes from, and even moments where he’s able to show kindness to his family, to show he cares about them. This is especially crucial in portraying his grandpa-grandson relationship with Morty. What we’re lacking in Starks’s comics are those moments. Rick here just feels meaninglessly, needlessly cruel, more so than he ever is in the show or the earlier comics. And since his presence is so big in every story, this makes Starks’s comics as a whole feel meaninglessly, needlessly cruel, like they’re severely lacking in heart in places where they need it.

I'm seven volumes in and I can say with certainty that some of the punchy and hilarious nature of the dialog of Rick and Morty is lost when put into graphic novel format. The voice and inflection of the actors really do bring a lot to these characters.

That being said, it would be wrong to dismiss the graphic novels if you are a fan of the show, because there is some serious world building taking place here. There are a lot of little tie ins to previous episodes, and you see that there is some show related underlying narrative being built. And the Film Theorists already sorted out, you are getting a lot of hints about Evil Morty as you read through this. I don't feel any of the Rick and Morty graphic novels have blown me away, but it feels like I need to keep reading them because I don't want to miss something important.

Really good Rick and Morty trade paperback, which is a little surprising considering that the 5 issues (plus a short) didn't share a story arc, but they were all really interesting by themselves--butt-probing aliens, a doppelgänger helps Summer understand her sexuality, the most blood-thristy (and likable) assassin, dinosaurs, falling in love with a flying car, and meditations on identity while body-swapping (this one was a little confusing though).

I still don't like it when Kyle Starks illustrates (issue #34, "The Life and Times of Krombopulos Michael").

After a weekend of heady history reading, I took a breather with some happy, hilarious nihilism. Getting a Rick and Morty trade is like getting extra episodes, and rare is it that I laugh out loud while reading. This is a twisted and dark series, not for everyone, especially if you are easily offended, or humorless. Check it out.

Overall a solid addition to the Rick and Morty collection, however the shorts added to this volume are arguably lacked the quality of others we've seen.

Some interesting story lines including delving into the past and back story of a one off TV episode character.

A take on the film Her which was more an emotional story than played for the usual laughs Rick and Morty stories play to.

Reading this as one of the core creators and voice of Rick is facing charges and has been removed from the series future. Honestly nothing too much is memorable from this volume. Hope the next one improves.

Finished this on the airplane coming back to America. It was nice. I feel like the more volumes you read into the Rick and Morty series, the more voice you can hear from the characters. I would recommend this series if are into the show.

More fantastic adventures with C-137's finest. Many more stories with Summer this time, which is awesome. Great collection as always.

The issue where Summer discovers herself happy in an alternate universe where she’s a lesbian was really poignant, and it really touched me!

Somewhat improved from the last volume, which was pretty meh, but I feel like the quality of these has kind of dropped off. It doesn't help that the art is all over the place, either.
