Delicious, wonderful, tactile. I loved the descriptions of the coal miners and the cold and the stiffness and all of the stories about the ice and the sea, roughening. The environment was so clear it was like you were right there. I loved all of the dogs and the horses, of course, and all the songs in Gaelic.
A collection of short stories about the people on and around Cape Breton, a desolate part of Canada populated by fisherman, miners and their family. All stories are good. Taken together, they are a lot. Probably best read one at a time over a longer period of time.
Beautiful. The stories are all intensely emotional, but the characters are super stoic and hardly share any emotions with each other. You just kind of feel what they must be feeling without needing to know their thoughts. Semen was mentioned way too many times.
A well-written group of short stories about life in rural, coastal Canada in the mid-twentieth century. Many of the stories are sad or have sad moments, but the sad parts are a real picture of the human experience living close to the land. Worth the read.
