Nothing about these poems was very unusual or inspiring; really they served only as an excuse for the gorgeous illustrations of Trina Schart Hyman. Worth viewing for that, though.
Well, obviously, fairies were a subject near and dear to the illustrator's heart, so she conjures up detailed and haunting black and white illustrations to go with each of the poems in this book, each in her unique style. Daisy Wallace has collected a group of poems which feel both traditional and timeless, from Tolkien to Shakespeare and more. I really liked her picks. They were full of magical imagery and had a more old-world and less commercialized perspective of fairies. Many of the fairies are naked which may bother some gatekeepers. I love each of the poetry picture books in this "series" which make poetry much more accessible to young readers.
Love, love, love. I love the illustrations, but she's one of my favorite illustrators ever that I collect books from anyway. But poem selection is great too. Not too long, and fun enough to keep my kids' attention which is hard to do with poetry.
The poems are very witty and fun but I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone younger than fifth grade. I definitely wouldn’t recommend the book as a whole though because of the lack of clothing of a few fairies.
