Witch You Well The Westwick Witches By: Colleen Cross Narrated by: Petrea Burchard This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. This is a fun story, but a good mystery. It has witches, a hot sheriff, grumpy witches, a hot sheriff, fun dialogue, a crazy witch trying to burn everything down, and a lot of silliness. It is a fun book but at the same time a good mystery that kept me guessing as to who and how they did it. Did I say a hot sheriff? Just checking. The narrator was fantastic! Couldn't have a better voice for this book. Just right for these witches and the chaos that was in this book and she did it perfectly. She even performed the hot sheriff just right. Great book!!!
I DNF'd this book at 42% and will not be leaving a rating since I didn't finish it.
This book started off just okay, but the character of Aunt Pearl kept me pushing through. The series really should be about her because she's better fleshed out and more interesting than Cen. Also, I love the narrator's voice for her. Hits it perfectly.
It was the little things, however, that tipped the scales too far on the scales of aggravation for Aunt Pearl to save it. It came to a point where I felt like that emoji with the straight mouth and eyes listening to this book.
What caused all this? Just ... inconsistencies. Inconsistencies as far as the ears could listen (in my case).
It was really annoying how many times the author trod over the same information. Yes, I understood the first time that you can't keep a sheriff because your aunt drives them all off. Yes, I understood the first time that you and your fiancé are the only young people in town because everyone else moved away (though I don't think that's a good enough reason to be together and get married). It was just so frustrating that the story would move forward then take backsteps with information that we've already gone over.
I also question whether this author has ever lived or been to a small town. Being from a small community, I can tell you the stereotype of the village gossip vine that travels at lightspeed it true. News, whether true or gossip, travels fast because everyone is in everyone else's business. People know when things happened in their community. So it's unbelievable that the community didn't know about the murder. Also, there's no way that guests wouldn't notice a freaking forensic van in the driveway of the place they're staying at when they have to go right by it! Also also, the mayor of an 1,000-person village could invite the state's governor to their wedding, but would the governor attend? Unless they already have a strong relationship in place, highly unlikely. Again, how does this author think small towns work?
It sounds like I'm hating on this book - earlier this morning I was when I decided to DNF it - but I think the setting, characters, and plot had potential ... if it had been handled better. An editor, better character development, closer attention to details, and a better understanding of small town USA is what is needed. Otherwise, this book falls flat and leaves a listener aggravated.
I'll be the first to admit that I don't usually read Cozy mysteries, however this four part book series appealed to me because of the Witches and magic contained within said stories. So because of that I decided to give the first book "Witch You Well" a go and I'm very glad that I did.
This was full on entertaining with all sorts going on, from being a secret witch albeit not wanting to be one, an eccentric family plus the odd family ghost member, a unique dog (you'll understand what I mean by unique once you start reading the story), a new sexy sheriff in Town, a murder, lots of secrets, a not so by the books Mayor, problematic relationship, romantic feelings for someone you shouldn't, uncovering a murderer, and the reopening of the family Inn. So it's all happening and definitely never a dull moment from start to finish. Plus a couple of the scenes did make me giggle.
So all in all, I very much enjoyed this and I'm looking forward to continuing the series with book 2.
Cendrine West lives in a sleepy little town called Westwick Corners, her family are busy preparing for the grand opening off the family Inn and the upcoming wedding of Cen and her soon to be husband the Mayor when they stumble (literally) across a dead body. Desperate to cover the family secret, Cen takes it upon herself to help new hunky sheriff Tyler Gates and make sure her Aunt Pearl isn’t charged with murder. Cen is descendent from a family of powerful witches but she herself doesn’t use witchcraft. She’s bought the local paper and is determined to have as normal a life as possible. Cen is possibly the only one in her family who has her head screwed on, especially compared to Aunt Pearl. Aunt Pearl is a bit wacky and partial to setting things on fire. The characters are brought to life in Witch You Well and the narrator has done an incredibly good job of using different voices for each character. The one that stood out was Aunt Pearl and I could just imagine her as I was reading. The story itself was a lot of fun, yes there is a murder but there are a lot of laugh out loud moments as Cen investigates and tries to keep her Aunt out of trouble. Cen also has her own personal troubles to deal with and the arrival of hunky new sheriff Tyler Gates sets her heart racing. Witch You Well is the first book in the Westwick Witches series and I have to say I’m really looking forward to reading/listening to more of this series. There’s nothing better than a fun cosy mystery when you’ve had your head stuck in books full of grizzly murders and gore and Witch You well was just the treat I needed.
I wanted to smack every single character in this book, except maybe the Sheriff--who should run far, far away from these people as fast as he can. It was very derivative, almost the Stephanie Plum series (without Ranger), but with magic. And unfortunately, in addition to being poorly written, also having all the annoying characters and none of the humour. I'm happy to suspend my disbelief when reading a book where magic is a major element, but I just couldn't get past it this time.
I really enjoyed this. It has laughs and troubles and fun, witches trying to live normal lives? Not if Aunt P has anything to do with it. Cantankerous & troublesome but well meaning. Everything comes together nicely and this tale is the product of it. A good storyline padded out with really good characters. I’m looking forward to learning more about them. Hoping Hazel pops up more, I think she’ll be a good 1 to follow! Narrator was good kept the story flowing and the ups & downs as things happened were great. An all round good audio
I have despised a lot of book character’s, Aunt Pearl ranks right up there with all of them. She wasn’t eccentric, funny, wholesome etc. She was tiresome, crass, interfering, bothersome, ridiculous, annoying, and her actions damaged the efforts the family reputation over and over. Even when they were trying to help her, she considered it a “game” and was unhelpful and rude, frankly I don’t know why they bothered trying even if she was family. She was a one woman crime wave determined that things had to go her way. Yeah I just did not like her
A good start to a new witchy cozy series. A witch who wants to get by as a powerless human, a family owned Inn, an overbearing aunt, a weak mother and a body. Who wanted to kill him? Some good banter and great descriptive writing bur I just wish that Cen would assert herself a bit more. Altogether a good solid read.
This book reads like it was written by at least two people that never bothered to read each other’s chapters. It’s horribly lacking in continuity and severe gaps in logic by every single character. Plus it’s the first book of the series but has poorly explained back history that makes you feel like you were supposed to have already read that story. I wanted to quit so many times I’m sad I didn’t.
Unfortunately the mystery was horrible. Even a child would know you don't leave a large, bloody murder weapon in the trash can of your hotel room so the cleaning person would find it. Of course your finger prints are on it also. Duh! There were several other plot turns that didn't seem to make sense. The story had potential but it derailed off the tracks.
Cendrine “Cen” West: Sheriff Tyler Gates: A terrible fiancé, an annoying aunt, a caring mother
The Story:
Writing: While I cannot complain about the writing style I will complain about several of the characters. I have no idea why Cen even wanted to marry her fiancé. He was a twat from page one. And the Aunt made me want to quit reading. I’m sure she is meant to be seen as eccentric but it just read as annoying to me. Forward Motion:Good. Overall Interest: Fair. As I said before I was ready to quit several times but the mystery kept me present. Length of Reading Time: Good, just what I wanted. Re-read-ability: Definitely not. I’m not even sure I’ll continue the series.
I think it is important for posterity to say that I listened to this in the UK in the middle of the Covid-19 lockdown. I found it the perfect listen for these difficult times.
The characters are believable and interesting and the plot was fun. There are plenty of giggles along the way.
The heroine Cendrine is very likeable and I shall look forward to listening to the next book in the series which is already waiting in my library. I'm so glad that it is part of a whole series but it would work as a standalone book too.
The narrator Petrea Burchard was amazing and I think she was perfect for this book. Her voices for the characters were varied and just how I imagined them.
The story overall was quite entertaining. However, as the main characters were witches, I would have liked a little more magic. It all seemed a little too secretive.
Initially, it took me a while to enjoy the narration, as Cendrine had rather a lazy way of speaking. I soon realised that the narrator was rather clever in her use of her voice to give each character a rather distinct way of speaking and the main character soon grew on me.
I’ve not read any Cozy mysteries and I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the fact it was a magical mystery too. There was a good introduction to the family and main characters in the story, the timeline of the story is good with enough twists to keep the reader entertained and thinking throughout the whole book. I’m so glad the wedding was cancelled - what a lucky escape but not before the murder occurred !! I enjoyed the length of the book and I didn’t feel like anything was rushed. I also like the humour in parts of the book, especially from Aunt Pearl This is a fun, easy read book with a mystery which also makes you over think at times! . I listened to this on audible and the voice of the narrator was calming and soft which was a bonus. I always love a soft voice! I felt like the narrator used a different tone for each person to show their personalities. I can’t wait to start listening to the next book in the series.

Es una historia donde los personajes principales son las brujas , este libro en especial se centra en un asesinato y su esclarecimiento. Aunque hay una solución al final este libro queda abierto supongo las otras historias conectan con este
Every once in a while I like to indulge in a cozy mystery. I love the fun predictability, the lightheartedness, and often funny plot lines. Bonus points if magic, vampires, or talking animals are involved. This book hit the marks... all of them! And with excellent narration, you can't go wrong. I think you should add this to your library. While there were some phrases I felt were over-used, I can overlook that because I loved the Aunt so very much. What a character! So if you are looking for something light and fun, you won't be disappointed. I was offered a copy in exchange for my honest review.
This certainly is a well written story, full of laughs, fun, and even a murder thrown into the melle too. I really enjoyed this light hearted read. Colleen Cross certainly has the correct recipe to entertain her readers. The characters are easily recognisable and fit the parts well, even Alan. The narrator really brings this book too life.
No conocía a esta escritora. Cuando vi el título del libro me dieron ganas de leerlo, y me encantó. Estoy deseando de que salga el resto d ela saga en español. Lo recomiendo, si te gusta el misterio y la magia ☺️😊.
Cendrine “Cen” West lives in a small town called Westwick Corners. She is descendant from a powerful line of witches, but she doesn't practice that much. She is in the process of marrying the mayor and having the grand reopening of her Inn. Life is good... until the day of her grand reopening sees a billionaire murdered and all clues pointing to her Aunt Pearl. It's up to Cen to try to figure out who the murderer is, while trying to keep her Aunt Pearl from antagonising the new Sheriff, Tyler, and getting thrown in jail for murder.
This was a fun read. I liked the characters but thought the mystery left a lot to be desired!! I'm sorry, but who leaves the murder weapon in a bin, in their room?? There were a few elements like this that had me rolling my eyes and thinking, seriously, you couldn't find a better way to handle that!!! The mystery of who murdered him was also kind of glaringly obvious. I wanted a little more subtlety, a lot more mystery!! I also didn't particularly like the fact that Cen fell for Tyler so quick.
Other than that, it's a fun read. The characters are all well written, I liked Aunt Pearl a lot!! We get the typical cozy mystery feel to the book and it was easy to read. It's a book that I call a mindless read, and I don't mean that in a bad way! By "mindless read" I mean a book that I can read and not have to concentrate on too much or put a lot of effort into to.
In all, this was an easy read with some flaws.
Petrea Burchard was ok. She was clear and has a pleasant tone suitable for this type of book, but I found she didn't have enough cadences or tones for the different characters to really bring the story to life. She could have portrayed Pearl a lot.... nuttier ;) Lol.
I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
This was not good but it was light, fluffy, easy reading. The main character is fine but - jeez - Aunt Pearl is HORRIBLE. She's an unlikable and unbelievable character, who seems to be in the story just to bring meaningless conflict. Oof- and the murderer? Apparently, completely brain dead stupid. The Brother Allen has been turned into a dog (yes, you read that correctly) storyline is glossed over and played for laughs, but, um... y'all that's somehow both messed up and ridiculous. I will not be reading the rest of this series. Two stars because I was able to finish this book, at least.
