The Elizabethan Season Glory and tragedy, love and betrayal in the age of Elizabeth
Linda was born in Swindon. Her family moved to Ely in Cambridgeshire when she was nine, and Linda attended the local school but left at fifteen to work as a hairdresser in her father's business. She was married at eighteen and ran her own hairdressing business for some years before moving to Cambridge, although Linda has now moved to somewhere a bit quieter in Cambridgeshire. She started writing in 1976, combining this with helping her husband to run his antique shop.
Writing as Anne Herries, Linda won the 2004 RNA Romance Award and the Betty Neels Trophy. She lives in Cambridgeshire. After many happy years of taking their holidays in Spain she and her husband, now have a second home in Norfolk. Being only a short drive, they can visit for a few days at a time, which suits their busy lifestyle these days. They are only just across the road from the sea, and can see it from their windows. At home and at the sea they enjoy watching the wildlife and have many visitors to their gardens, particularly squirrels. Anne loves watching their antics and spoils both them and her birds shamelessly. She also loves to see the flocks of geese and other birds flying in over the sea during the autumn, to winter in the milder climes of this country. Anne loves to write about the beauty of nature and sometimes puts a little into her books, though they are mostly about love and romance. She writes for her own enjoyment and to give pleasure to her readers.
This was not a good romance. To explain why, I will now tell the entire story in a few well-chosen sentences. Ignore my incisive and brilliant summary if you don't want spoilers.

"Oh, my!" Young Catherine saw a black cloud in the distance. The cloud looked evil. Catherine was afraid.
"I must have you, lovely Cat!" Nick Grantly was rich, dazzling and sincere. He loved Cat's spirit and her brilliant mind.
"I don't like you," Catherine pouted. "You are a rogue. I saw you standing next to some bad men in a crowd. You rogue!"
"Clever Cat," said the queen. "No one has ever been so brilliant before. You are now my number one girl."
"I smell something funny under my pillow," Catherine said. "And I have a headache. Oh, well. Must be a coincidence."
"The man we are looking for is evil," Walsingham said. "He likes to use bad-smelling herbs to make people sick."
Nick's blood ran cold. "Cat has been feeling sick! I'd better run off to France to investigage. I might be gone for months!"
"I hate Nick!" Catherine wheezed. "He ran off because he is a rogue. We kissed twice and it was true love. Oh, I feel so sick. Who put these nasty herbs under my pillow? Well, I better just forget all about it and go to sleep as usual."
"How dare you lie to me, Cat?" scowled the queen. "You let your best friend run off and get married. Leave my court at once."
"But I have a headache," Catherine whined. "Can I take some bad smelling herbs with me? Please?"
Out in the country, Catherine wandered in a daze till she found a high stone staircase to fall off of. Just then a black cloud appeared. "Of course!" she cried. "The clouds were caused by the same evil man who put all those smelly herbs under my pillow. And I know who he is and why he did it too. His name is -- " THUNK!!!
Days later, Catherine awoke from a dream to see her handsome Nick looking down at her with eyes filled with devotion.
"Thank God I've found you," he said. "In your delirium you explained who the villain was and I told Walsingham and Walsingham killed him. Queen Elizabeth says she was wrong to be mad at you and you're still her number one girl. My lovely Cat, you are so clever and so independent! You are perfect in every way! Now let's get rid of these smelly herbs and live happily ever after."
