Two more elves were at large in Vancouver, but thankfully they’d been keeping a low profile while I faced the most daunting task of my twenty-seven years — planning and executing my wedding. I was dealing with a disgruntled grandmother with an extensive guest wish list of the magically inclined, all of whom didn’t particularly like each other. Plus a fiance whose concept of time was altered whenever he stepped into a dimensional pocket, and a best friend who’d spent months planning what was certain to be an insane bachelorette party. How was I supposed to find time to worry about possible invasions, or the motley crew of magical misfits who had unrepentantly upended my peaceful existence? Not that I was complaining. Who didn’t love wielding deadly weapons, opening a bakery, and marrying their soul mate in the same week? Or was that just my sort of thing?Misfits, Gemstones, and Other ShatteredMagic is the eighth book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).
Meghan Ciana Doidge writes tales of true love conquering all, even death. Though sometimes the love is elusive, the vampires and werewolves come out to play in the daylight, and bloody mayhem ensues.
Book 7 lulled readers into an uneasy complacency. Then, book 8 hits you in the face with all the wrongness. Wow. I loved it but audibly gasped and said "Oh No!" out loud at the end. What will all our heroes do?!?! You must read this book in the author recommended order to get it, so I won't bother with a plot summary. I'll just ask this question (as does this book) - What happens when the heroes go down? Who will save the day? Unless your answer is a 19 year old Necromancer with her undead turtle Fred, some supernaturally enhanced foster kids, a grandmother, a pregnant oracle, and a host of other "misfits", then you're wrong. Read this series. It's awesome!
I won't lie, this one is not my favorite. The story is solid, as always, with many of my favorites making at least an appearance. I really can't get into specifics of my disappointment without giving spoilers. The book is very much worth reading, regardless of the use of 'these ones'...
You had me . . . all the way until the end of the book and then you (Meghan Ciana Doidge) give us a flipping cliff hanger!!! And not just a cliffhanger but Mt. Everest-at-the-very-top-no-one-survives cliffhanger.
I can't say anything more about the book because I detest cliffhangers. Sigh. Sorry, really hate them. Ruins a perfectly funny, Jadesque-driven, lots of action story.
The. Chocolate (and I've eaten two so far). Didn't. Help. I want the author to take it back and write it again. And the next books are from other characters perspectives. I had heard this might be the end of the series, I really hope 1) that it doesn't end without hearing back from Jade and 2) that it doesn't just end with a possibility of more books later - let it go or keep at it please.

"Even beyond elves running amok, the tenor of Vancouver was changing. And it always got worse before it got better, didn’t it? The trick was getting through the worst of it without losing anyone in the process. Or without murdering anyone. And I had yet to pull off that feat." – Misfits (Etc) aka Dowser 8
First of all, I should warn you that you will crave chocolate and cupcakes while reading this book. Make sure you check out the reading order, and start with the first book. You won’t be sorry.
This book takes us on a journey and leaves us in a different place than the other books. We see the misfits pull together. The ending was surprising, and I wanted more. Reading the entire series really has me vested in all the characters, and I can feel the power Jade has rolling off the pages. You can almost smell the magic. Dig in and enjoy.
I loved this series! Until this book... It feels like author is trying to stretch series to have more books in it. Previous books all had some kind of happy ending or at least, some kind of finality to them, this one ends on cliff hanger. Hate cliff hangers. And most likely, I won't buy the next book, dissapoitment of this one is too great.
Man, Jade can't even get a break for the wedding! While we don't hit full wedding in this book, we are clearly building up to it and... things just can't go right.
Remember the elves? Well, this is apparently going to be a thing that lasts multiple books. While we are getting hints and teasers, it all comes to a head in a sort-of-kind-of cliffhanger ending here. Besides that? There's the usual (for Jade) drama leading up to a wedding being planned by major magical players, lots of guardian nonsense, werewolf pack stuff (ugh, remember Desmond?), and sexy times. Roll all of that together, with her growing band of misfits, and you've got this book.
While we learn a lot along the way, we don't actually get the big wrap up here. We are clearly building to what may or may not be a really really bad battle, but things are still moving in to place. Can I just say that I am loving Mory more and more each time we see her? This book is no exception. She's going to be big stuff later on, I'm sure. Also, Kett in these books is so different from Kett in the reconstructionist storyline. I'm still trying to reconcile to two, but I think we are getting to a place where they might become one person at some point. All in all, this pushed things along, but still made me what to throw my kindle across the room at the end. Diving right into book #8.5!
As you can tell by fact i have read all the series, try to read in series order as the books are not stand alone stories. Werewolves, Seers, Cupcakes, vampires, mages, Dragons and Chocolate
Below is the reading order though you can read this before but nice to read in order 1. Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic, Dowser 1 2. Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic, Dowser 2 3. Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic, Dowser 3 4. I See Me, Oracle 1 5. Shadows, Maps, and Other Ancient Magic, Dowser 4 6. Tangled Echoes (Reconstructionist 2) 12. Unleashing Echoes (Reconstructionist 3) 13. Champagne, Misfits, and Other Shady Magic (Dowser 7) 14. Misfits, Gemstones, and Other Shattered Magic (Dowser 8) 15. Graveyards, Visions, and Other Things That Byte (Dowser 8.5) 16. Gemstones, Elves, and Other Insidious Magic (Dowser 9) 17. The Amplifier Protocol (Amplifier 0) – bundled with Close to Home (Amplifier 0.5) 18. Demons and DNA (Amplifier 1) 19. Bonds and Broken Dreams (Amplifier 2) 20. Mystics and Mental Blocks (Amplifier 3) 21. Idols and Enemies (Amplifier 4) 22. Misplaced Souls (Misfits of the Adept Universe 1) 23. Awakening Infinity (Archivist 0)
I would probably have given this 3 stars on the strength of the fact that there was less brand name-dropping than usual - but it had a cliff-hanger ending, which is a tacky cheat by anyone, and a new low for Ms. Doidge.
To make it even tackier, it's not even a cliff-hanger to try to force me to buy book 9 in the series. It's to try to force me to buy book 8.5. Seriously??
I don't know. Maybe it is because I don't reread the entire friggin' series before each new book comes out. There are at least a dozen more characters than I can keep track of now, and a bzillion details that I have no recollection of knowing before. I feel like I'm only getting about half the story, and I'm really not sure it's worth it any more.
I really enjoyed this book 😊 The elfs are pretty interesting 😊 Love that all her friends say that they belong to Jade and do so proudly and of their own free will 😍 I just absolutely love their loyalty and the friendships she formed 😍 Favorite character is still Kett, all the way though 😍😂 Also love that we have her under the elfs control now but fighting it every step... it shows how powerful she also is with her will, without making it feel to easy for her 🤔😍 Hope that we won't get to much of that in the next book tho... A few more chapters, than she should be able to shake it off and just be Jade again... Something like that is always interesting for a short time, but if it lasts to long it gets annoying to me 😬 So let's see what Book 9 brings 😍😊

What. The. Fuck? I like to read the ends of books because I don’t like being blindsided. I didn’t read the end of this one, and boy was I blindsided and I did not like that at all. I immediately went to the end of book 9 to find out how it all ends. This series hasn’t been without its death and destruction, but the main core characters have always been safe. It’s not a high stakes series like some other fantasy series, so the Infinity War ending was not expected. But to her credit, MCD told us it was going to happen, even though we didn’t realize it at the time - “‘What do you see, oracle?’ I asked Rochelle” “‘You.” Rochelle whispered. ‘Here. In this room. You Jade. The beginning of the end. It’s you. You are the weapon.’”

Major trigger warning for false imprisonment and mind control. I pretty much hated this book. All of the others in this series have been fun, almost cozy. This one was not. Everyone is terrible to each other and there is really intense mind control; it was a massive violation. I wish I had read the reviews first so I'd know how sheet this book was. It also ends on a sheet cliffhanger; honestly I'm very angry and disturbed but I guess thankful my PTSD didn't fully trigger. I'd give it 0 stars. I've already skipped one book because I didn't get it as fast as the others and it did not make the next 5 difficult to understand. I would encourage my past self to skip this one.
I love this series! The book is excellent! Jade and Warner are getting married soon but the elves are still loose. Between getting ready for the wedding Jade and friends have to content with want the elves are up to. There is lots of action, romance and humor! I will admit as much as I love this series, I hated the cliffhanger ending! I can’t wait for the next book! I highly recommend this book and the rest of the Dowser series! I give the book 10 stars!
Jade just wants a since of belonging a family that is all equal and safe within her world. She doesn't want to be in control of every aspect of all who encounters a part of her life. Yes she likes protecting others however she wants that same feeling they receive when in their presence.
Jade is pregnant that's what's deteriorating her mind. Our hero can't be defeated or taken under control by a telepathy elf, say it isn't so Meghan?
Jade and Declan are days away from getting married, but first she needs to open her new bakery and have her bridal show given by her Mother. And Kandy is in charge of a night out but it must take a back seat when the elves show up. Their leader inserts a gem into Jade's forehead and tries to take over her mind. They are forcing Jade to create a way for the elves to invade Vancouver, but she is fighting it.
This one I've given a low rating to but I found it hard to review. No I didn't really enjoy it and was slightly put off by then ending. However it certainly make for a good cliff hanger and made me immediately buy the next couple of books to find out what happened. I pity the poor souls who read it when it first came out and had to wait for the next installment.
I guess you'll just have to read it for yourself to see how you would rate it.
Finally I am starting to enjoy this series again. This was a solid addition, nothing amazing, but it kept me engaged. The characters definitely annoyed me a little less in this one and they were almost endearing. The plot was interesting and you could feel it building to something dramatic. That ending was dramatic. I don't know if I totally love where the story went in the end, but at least it's different to the usual stuff.
Once again Jade and Candy find themselves involved in a magical mess Thankfully Warrener and Kett are there to help out. This book is wonderfully written and leaves you wanting more! It's so had to put down and not read all the way through. Meghan is a fantastic writer planning on her story line really well!!!!!
I loved this book so much! From start to finish, it reels you in and you just can't put it down. It's as addictive as Jade's cupcakes! The elf drama, the poor timing around the wedding, and pretty much EVERY interaction with Kett. Hoping for the next book soon! Keep fighting, Jade!
As jade and her misfits stories unfold it just seems to never be an easy path. What a series, this one just as breathtaking as the first one, as all of them are. I cannot get enough of the adapts universe. I cannot wait for next wow. Meghan Diana Doidge is a masterful creator.
OMG!!! That ending was crazy!!!!! WTH!!! Without going into the nitty, gritty details or any serious spoilers, just suffice it to say that this does not bode well for Jade's and Warner's wedding happening in four days. I am seriously hoping and praying that bad@$$ Grandma Pearl can come in and save the day and whoop some serious elf @$$!!!!!

I truly enjoy the Adept Universe and have read many of the stories. I’ve read the different series out of order, so can say with certainty that MCD is one of my favorite authors. I am, however, getting incredibly disgusted by the cliff hanging, novella length books charged at full book prices.
Wow. I'm not even sure how I'm supposed to feel after reading this one. I love & hate the story at the same time. I mean understand it needed to happen but OMG....not what I thought or how I envisioned this one ending. I'm completely hooked & must finish the next books to know how Jades adventures end.
I did NOT see this coming! But...I trust the author to take me where she needs me to go. Each book in this series is nothing short of amazing. This book is no exception. What a gift it is to be transported to a place where the characters become so real as to be (literally) painful. On to the next book with grateful thanks.
So there are far too many characters in this story that it seems a bit ridiculous - so convoluted with people that there isn’t much room for story, and I feel like I’m missing some things. Everyone is mean and pissy in this one, but I did like Kandy’s t-shirts. I was frustrated by the cliff hanger - it felt rushed and unnecessary. Pretty disappointed with this one overall.
Not to give away the ending but this one ends on a cliff hanger. Left me wishing the story had progressed more but that is a good technique to keep people interested. I’m a little nauseous thinking about the ending.
I generally don't read urban fantasy, but Meghan Ciana Doidge is a guilty pleasure that I simply cannot resist, much like Jade's delectable cupcakes. This latest installment in her Drowser series does not disappoint.
