Dal romanzo è stato tratto un film diretto dallo stesso Ousmane.

رواية ليست بالكبيرة حجماً لكنها بحجم معاناة قارة - هي أفريقيا والسنغال تحديداً - في فقرها وعوزها ومآسيها في فترة ما بعد الاستعمار ،، الخارج المأمول والداخل المصاب بكل داء ، الحقيقة التي هي في الواقع خداع وزيف ،، تزعزع القيم حيث توجد الحاجة والبؤس ،،، رواية من مؤلف عاش واقع بلاده وترجمها سعدي يوسف ببراعة مع مقدمة جميلة عن الرواية الإفريقية

Arriva il vaglia, quindi arrivano i soldi? No, perché l’unica cosa che porta sono i guai. La rocambolesca disavventura del povero Dieng che si arrabatta mi ha ricordato quei film comici italiani in bianco e nero che giostravano sulle assurdità della burocrazia. Quindi tra fiducia malriposta, indebitamenti preventivi, consigli non richiesti - senza dimenticare le suppliche/pretese di amici, parenti e perfetti sconosciuti - il personaggio si ritrova così invischiato nell’iter necessario per riscuotere da non essere più in grado di uscirne, e anzi aggravando ulteriormente la sua situazione, in conseguenza dei disperati tentativi per ottenere sti benedetti soldi - a cui lui tra parentesi spetta solo una minima parte!
Un discreto racconto che vede il protagonista affaccendarsi tra istituzioni e tradizioni senegalesi, visto con una certa ironia ma molto limitato a mio avviso. La questione viene esposta in modo grezzo, senza mai soffermarsi in dettagli o articolando minimamente eventi e personaggi. Una mancanza tutt’altro che trascurabile che relega in queste pagine lo stretto indispensabile e nulla più, anzi a volte nemmeno quello.
Tra l’altro è una situazione paradossale, considerato che la prefazione è estremamente prolissa. Mi sembrava di non finirla mai :P

Uno spaccato di vita senegalese che per certi aspetti tragici ricorda Verga.
Arriva un vaglia, riscuoterlo è reso quasi impossibile dalla burocrazia, gli approfittatori si avventano su Dieng come sciacalli con richieste di prestiti ed elemosine e lui che è un uomo onesto (ma anche ingenuo e questo lo condannerà a subire angherie di ogni genere) cerca di aiutare tutti.
È un romanzo breve molto triste e amaro.

هنا الاستعمار بعد رحيله. ترك للسكان ما يمكن أن يعيشوا عليه، الفساد، الفقر، الجوع؛ الشبح الذي مزق أوصال أكثر المجتمعات تجانساً في ما قبل ذلك.
من السنغال نرى وجه أفريقيا البائس. تلك الجوهرة السوداء بمخزونها المحتل. رواها لنا "صنبين" بشريط سنميائي. رسم صور البؤس الذي تجلى على جهل المجتمع الأفريقي في فترة ما بعد الاستقلال.
نجاح هذا النص يأتي بوضوح الصورة المرسومة، قليلة هي الأعمال القصيرة التي تنجح في بث الصورة بوضوح عن مجتمعها.
بعد استقلال السنغال عاش الناس حياة بائسة استغلتها حكومتهم لنشر الجهل عن طريق استغلال الفقراء الذين يزدادون فقراً. عالم لا ينتهي من الفساد في بلد يزخر في خيراته التي سيطر عليها المحتل . بدأ المجتمع بأكل نفسه شيئاً فشيئاً.
لماذا؟! "لأن الغش والكذب وحدهما هما الحقيقة.
الصدق جريمة في هذه الأيام".
تصل حوالة مالية لابراهيم من فرنسا. ينتشر خبرها كالريح في المدينة الفقيرة التي يعيش بها. يجد صعوبة في استلامها لأنه لا يمتلك بطاقة هوية، هنا تبدأ متاعبه مع الفساد الحكومي. يعود صفر اليدين لقريته ليجد عيون القرية تحدق به استغلالاً وحسداً ورأفة منه بهم لكي يقترضوا منه، هنا تبدأ حكاية ثانية للوجه القاتم للمجتمع الأفريقي عامة .
حكاية ما ان تنتهي منها ستبقى تطاردك كشبح تختزن ذاكرتك بشريط مصور تشاهد من خلالها البؤس واضحاً تلعن من خلاله ألف مرة الاستعمار وما خَلَّفه من مصائب لا تعالج بين ليلة وضحاها.

صنبين كتبت رواية بلغة المستعمِر، حملتَ من خلالها ضوءً كاشفاً، لتُعبر عن ما يختزله الشعب بداخله من أسى وبؤس. أثبتَّ أن الرواية الأفريقية ولو أنها تكتب بلغة غير لغتها تحمل معها ما تُرك في تلك البلاد المظلمة بفعل ما يصيبها من استغلال وضعف.
ستبقى الصورة عالقة مكانها تنتظر من يُتلفها، ليرسم وجهاً مشرقاً لأبنائها.

رواية قصيرة تُقرأ في جلسة واحدة، لكن الأقدار شاءت أن أقرأ النصف الأول منها في درجة حرارة بلغت الخمسة والأربعين درجة مئوية. كِلانا، أنا وبطل الرواية "إبراهيم دينج" كنا نتصبب عرقاً، هو خلال محاولاته صرف الحوالة التي وصلته من باريس وأنا خلال فترة الانتظار التي كنت أقضيها في السيارة على صوت جهاز التكييف الذي يحاول عبثاً أن يخفف من حرارة الجو.

أول قراءة لي من سلسلة ذاكرة الشعوب، هذه السلسلة التي لم تقل أهميتها مع تقادم الزمن، بل ربما ازدادت وازداد الطلب والبحث عنها، محدثكم يملك ٢٤ عمل من أصل ٣٣ ولله الحمد.

Witty book w/ dry humor as the protagonist tries to cash a money order from abroad, but he doesn’t have an ID. He gets lost in the labyrinth of bureaucracy and is taken advantage of by a richer relative. Found it very socially relevant bc many Africans migrants + refugees within Africa suffer the same fate.

"Le mandat" hekelt het Senegalese bureaucratische systeem, een koloniale erfenis die na de onafhankelijkheid op poten is gezet. Hoofdpersonage Dieng probeert een postwissel om te zetten in geld en komt tot de vaststelling dat hij eigenlijk niet bestaat: hij heeft geen identiteitskaart, geen fotobewijs, ... en om die reden kan geen enkele ambtenaar hem helpen. Het document begint zijn leven te domineren en iedereen uit zijn omgeving probeert iets van hem gedaan te krijgen. "De postwissel" is een postkoloniale kafkaëske novelle waarin een naïeve goeddoener ten onder gaat in een samenleving bevolkt door bureaucraten, bedriegers, bedelaars en profiteurs, maar het verhaal graaft volgens mij niet diep genoeg. Albert Cossery schreef betere literatuur over dit soort werelden. 3/5

الرواية من الادب الأفريقي وتحديداً من السنغال تحكي الرواية سيرة مجتمع ومعاناته في فترة ما بعد الاحتلال حيث الفقر والجوع والبطالة والفساد تنخر المجتمع
بدأ المترجم سعدي يوسف بالحديث عن الرواية الافريقية وبعض الروائيين الأفارقة ونبذة عن بعض رواياتهم
ثم بدأت الرواية بقصة "ابراهيم دينج" وهو رجل فقير متزوج من امرأتين وله تسع ابناء في حي فقير شبه معدوم في "داكار" العاصمة يأتيه ساعي البريد "باه" برسالة واشعاراً بحوالة ماليه من فرنسا تعود لإبن اخته "عبدو" الذي غادر الى باريس مؤخراً للبحث عن عمل وهنا تبدأ رحلة نضال ابراهيم لتسلم الحوالة وجشع جيرانه وابناء الحي حين وردهم هذا الخبر ...
ابدع الكاتب بتصوير بؤس ومعاناة مجتمعه على الرغم من قلة صفحات الرواية الا انها نقلت الواقع المرير ببراعة ..

Not quite on the level of "God's Bits of Wood" but affecting all the same. "Money Order" was made into a film by the author (this he did many times with his own works) and is the more accessible of the two, a nasty comedy of errors.

Il breve romanzo mostra come la mentalità capitalistica dei colonizzatori bianchi abbia influenzato la cultura del Senegal, che all'alba dell’Indipendenza si trova ad essere un paese completamente diverso e quasi alieno alle vecchie generazioni. La morale di condivisione, di supporto e comunità viene avvelenata e annientata dall'importanza del denaro, che domina i rapporti trasformandoli in occasioni di opportunismo e sfruttamento dell’altro.

“Ti chiedo di non considerare il denaro come l’essenza della vita. Il denaro come essenza della vita ti conduce solo su una falsa strada dove, prima o poi, sarai solo. Il denaro non crea niente di solido. Anzi, distrugge tutto ciò che ci resta di umano’’ dice Ibrahima Deng, protagonista del libro, al nipote in Francia. Eppure è il denaro che permette al nipote di supportare la sua famiglia e sperare di avere un futuro. Le parole di Deng sono una lamentela anacronistica di una generazione che non vuole accettare le regole di questo gioco imposto dall'invasione della cultura europea e globale ma che allo stesso tempo non può far altro che partecipare, pieni di rimpianti per un modo di vivere che metteva le persone prima dei soldi.
Un racconto amaro, che prova un rassegnato senso di mestizia.

Chef de famille, chômeur, pauvre et considéré, Ibrahima Dieng reçoit un providentiel mandat de Paris ; il essaie d'en toucher le montant.... ; d'espoir fou en amères désillusions commencent alors ses tribulations.
La grande habileté de Sembène Ousmane a consisté, dans ce récit, à reconstituer un monde à partir du plus modeste des événements. Ce monde, c'est le petit peuple africain des villes, à la frontière ambiguë de l'Afrique traditionnelle, et de l'autre, celle de l'administration, de la bureaucratie, de la police, etc... Sembène qui connaît au plus près cette situation de pauvreté et cette ambiguïté en évoque admirablement la présence et la parole, le mouvement et la couleur, le cynisme et l'innocence ; lucide, et bienveillant, c'est la vie quotidienne du peuple africain urbain d'aujourd'hui - ce peuple encore démuni et toujours déçu - qu'il donne authentiquement à voir et à comprendre.

De vrucht van de schande, verfilmd als Niaye, geeft weer hoe een meisje (door incest) zwanger is van haar vader. De nadruk ligt het verhaal, mijn inziens, niet op het meisje, maar op de moeder (de tweede vrouw van haar echtgenoot), Ngoné War Thiandum. Het meisje verlaat met haar baby, een dochter genaamd Véhi-Ciosane Ngoné Thiandum, aan het eind van de novelle het dorp waarin ze is opgegroeid. Haar moeder heeft zelfmoord gepleegd.

De postwissel, verfilmd als Mandabi, geeft prima de bureaucratie weer en laat tevens de scheiding zien tussen arm en rijk. Uiteindelijk wordt Dieng bestolen door een familielid (van zijn eerste vrouw) aan wie hij in goed vertrouwen een machtiging geeft om de postwissel te innen.

Le Mandat: Family receives money from Paris and is freaking out not only about the amount (huge) but also what the neighbors will think of them. There’s a lot of drama, people think he’s lying about not receiving the money, they all want their part (debts paid, help for food), but he’s up against a dark bureaucracy that won’t give him his money after all. And then someone steals it ! Woah.

Vehi Ciosan: About a family in Senegal, the daughter gets pregnant and her parents are less than happy about it! There’s some politics in there as well, and a lot of conversations between community elders and the imam.

Un livre remarquable, une vraie fenêtre sur les mentalités du Sénégal (qui valent bien les nôtres), les deux récits sont vraiment captivants et pleins de vérité humaine. Tout à fait le livre idéal pour commencer un cycle de lecture d'auteurs africains. Je le recommande chaudement. Notez aussi que par des touches rares et discrètes, le paysage, la végétation et la lumière sont très présents dans ces 2 histoires.

السينغال، لا صوت إلا للجوع والعوز، وقليل من الإيمان المتجلي في حفاظهم على الصلوات، والإحسان للجار، والمسارعة إلى الصلح في مشهد المسجد والشهود.
في صورة واضحة لفجور المستعمر الفرنسي، ترك لهم الفساد وغذاه وحافظ على استمراريته؛ لضمان انشغالهم في قوت اليوم ولا يصل العامل أبداً إلى كفايته، هذه الصورة تتكرر في جميع أعمال القارة السمراء مع اختلاف اسم الدولة والعادات.

Ousmane Sembene t’amène au cœur de la vraie vie au Sénégal. A l’extérieur de l’Afrique, le Mandat sera une comédie ; mais moi, je voulais pleurer. Une tache dites faciles devient presqu’impossible, un vrai catch-22 quand la gouvernance est mauvaise. Lisez pour comprendre.

I give this a 3 stars for personal reasons rather than literary. Literarily, I think this novel offers great insight into the problems that bureaucracy and certain economic values cause when they impact a society that used to value communities and friendships. Although not entirely evident, we do see how general greed and corruption of the "new money" generation manipulates the weaknesses of the "old" generation.

One textual problem that I had was that the novel lends itself to a number of convoluted readings and interpretations. For example, how do we interpret the role of women in this novel who both contribute to Dieng's ruin but also defend him and care for his children? How do we interpret the final words of the novel, "le silence," if there is ever to be hope for change and/or revolution?

On a personal level, however, this novel is one of those "witnessing a train wreck" tragedies that can be seen from the very beginning. I tend to find those difficult to enjoy and so was in knots from beginning to end just hoping for someone, somewhere to have some empathy.

Chegar ate esta obra do autor senegalés traducida ao galego para mi foi unha pequena odisea de azar, pero de azar gustoso. Ten un relato da realidade de subsistencia que atravesan na África post-colonial que merece moito a pena. As realidades que representan a emigración, a precariedade, a corrupción..., son extensibles á nosa realidade tamén; á par que mostran a pegada de Europa no continente africano. Unha pegada de vergoña. Poren, os aspectos vinculados coa emigración son especialmente certeros, e para min gardan unha forte vinculación co que representeu para os galegos o emigrar a América.

it was sad, and funny and soul-crushing. A combo that you won’t expect, but so it’s life; it makes you cry just before it makes you crack up.

In White Genesis, we travel to a small village during colonial times in Senegal, where caste still rules and the only thing people may have in common is their desire not to pay taxes. And in Money Order, an illiterate poor old man gets a money order from his nephew from France that promises to put food on his table. But his neighbors will not let him have it without taking a bite. It’s every person for themselves when it comes to making the stomach stop grumbling.
