Very smart gardening practices with multidisciplinary ways to approach organic gardening. I can now say that I talk to every plant before I trim it, pull any fruit off, or move it. All thanks to this book.

Cultivating respect and their gardens go hand in hand, literally, as a spiritual family starts a movement of back to nature life in a barren expanse of sand and stone. Working the land, listening to it’s needs via the devas and spirits that also inhabit the area, this small troupe of 6 start a revolution of organic gardening, stoked in spirituality and hard labor. What started as necessity due to loss of employment became a trial and error success story of what can be accomplished when one simply listens and learns. The Findhorn garden is an international gem, heralded by countless professionals in horticultural fields for its unbelievable results from the most basic of care. If I ever get to Scotland, this is on my must see list.
Told in chapters by its founding members and their main contribution to its success. Q&A follows it up with tips on soil improvements and such.
But really, it’s about how we can all accomplish so much with so little if we only respect the needs and forgo the desires.

This is the story of what can happen when humans realized there is more to this world than what our five physical senses can tell us. This is a beautiful book about a very special place that teaches us to work with spirit in all that we do. When we choose to wake up and acknowledged the Devas and nature spirits, and give them the love and respect that is rightfully theirs, when we choose to work with them as equal partners, miracles can and will happen!
We are all individuals but we are also part of the Whole. After reading this book I have gained a better understanding of my own purpose here on this planet. I am not a gifted sensitive who can openly communicate with the nature spirits, but you dont need to be. Acknowledging them and showing them love and respect is enough to let them know you wish to work with them. A way of communicating will always be found. Love is the key.
I highly re comment this book to everyone. Gardeners and non-gardeners, all who are on a spiritual path. It gives one hope and the encouragement to work with those in the Unseen. Imagine the miracles that would happen if we all started working with the Devas and nature spirits!

An early New Age book. An experiment in gardening, in forming an intentional community, and communication between the sensitives and psychics and visionaries and the plant kingdom. A reminder that we are vibrational beings, in constant interplay with animal, mineral, and vegetable kingdoms and Nature. What we do, and the intentions behind it, matter very much. Nice to remember a more innocent time.

A life-changing book for me. It was hearing about a place in Scotland called Findhorn that set me on the path I still walk today. Though I've never set foot on the actual community, it was this book (and Paul Hawken's "The Magic of Findhorn") that gave me the clear underlying premise of what's made this and other outposts of intentional living both magical *and* practical.
Interesting that others have mentioned how it affected their practices of gardening. I recall more Eileen Caddy's stories of receiving spiritual guidance while cleaning the communal outhouse, Dorothy Maclean's vivid account of nature spirits (the devas) and Roc's encounters with Pan in the Edinburgh Gardens that have stayed with me. A wonderful, timeless book.

An audio-visual presentation in 1974 in Portland, Oregon, by Peter Caddy, founder of the Findhorn Foundation in Scotland, followed by an avid read of this and three related books, sparked curiosity in me that was so strong that I couldn't not go there. Going there totally changed my life, and gave me life-long hope for a future for my kids and our troubled planet. The other three books are: "The Magic of Findhorn", "Revelation, The Birth of a New Age", and "God Spoke to Me".

This book is the well written story of the founding and evolution of the gardens and community that flourishes on the Findhorn peninsula in Scotland. Working in co-creative collaboration with nature, the founders built gardens and soil from a base of sand. A textbook for how we can reclaim and restore the balance between man and nature - neither dominant, both bringing their gifts into creative partnership.

This is a fascinating account about the founding of the amazing Findhorn Garden in Scotland. Findhorn is now a famous spiritual retreat center, but upon learning about its impossibly lush gardens, I picked this book up... the story that unfolds is for those who are open-minded about Nature Spirits and how we are all interconnected to all of life...

Read this and the Pig Who Sang to the Moon and you will understand better why I can't kill spiders and other bugs...well, I do make exceptions for flies and roaches -- thank god I haven't seen one of those in years. For more depth about this book, click the book for standard review.

This book is refreshing to read. It shows enlightenment in ways that I never thought possible. Some of the story may be hard for some to swallow, but regardless, it has much to learn from. I really enjoyed this amazing story.

Theo cảm nhận của cá nhân mình, nội dung sách viết rất chung chung, dài dòng, nhiều đoạn lặp đi lặp lại, đọc sẽ cảm thấy bị ngán và mông lung, không hiểu được rõ ràng tác giả muốn nói điều gì, là muốn nhấn mạnh việc tinh thần cây, tinh thần thiên nhiên, các tinh linh đều có tồn tại? Sự hợp tác giữa con người và thiên nhiên là quan trọng?
Nhưng nếu vậy thì có phương pháp, cách thức nào để tạo ra cầu nối, sự hợp tác giữa con người và thiên nhiên? Như thế nào được xem là "hòa hợp", biện pháp nào để đạt được sự hòa hợp? Trong sách đề cập đến việc những người sáng lập của Khu vườn Findhorn tin vào Thượng đế, để niềm tin dẫn dắt và trò chuyện với các tinh linh cây cối; nhưng đến đoạn kết thì sách cũng đưa ra nội dung là trường hợp của Dorothy và Roc là ngoại lệ, hiện nay ở Findhorn không còn ai liên lạc theo cách đó nữa (Trang 232). Vậy thì làm cách nào? Trong bản dịch tiếng việt dùng rất nhiều câu, nhiều từ khẳng định, như "duy nhất","tuyệt vời nhất", "có ảnh hưởng nhất",... nhưng lại không có một lập luận, hay một minh chứng nào đưa ra để thuyết phục.
Giá trị của cuốn sách này, mình đánh giá nó đến từ việc đưa ra một góc nhìn mới về mối quan hệ giữa con người - thiên nhiên - trái đất, tất cả là một, gần gũi và liên kết với nhau. Về tầm quan trọng của đất, về những cái cây lớn, côn trùng và động vật, về những khu đất cần được để yên để được tự do phát triển đa dạng sinh học. Tự nhiên biết cách để làm mọi thứ sống dậy. Và suy nghĩ về một thế giới nơi mà con người chưa biết đến, về việc trái đất có thể là thực thể sống có tri giác và nó cảm nhận được những điều mà con người làm đối với mình. Và năng lượng của tất cả mọi thứ đều giao thoa, tác động lẫn nhau.
Tuy nhiên, cách truyền đạt và diễn tả của nhóm tác giả không chạm đến mình, khiến mình thấy nghi ngờ nhiều hơn là tin tưởng khi đọc.

This book is at the same time so batshit and so intriguing. Is it true? Is it real? Had I been an adult in the 70s I would have liked to make a trip to see this garden and see if it truly is remarkable. My first impression is that I don't believe that these people literally speak to nature spirits (devas). And yet this is empirically demonstrable. Not that they speak to spirits or not--after all, they themselves maintain it's just internal messages that they receive into their hearts. (Though some have visions of elves etc.) But I'm fascinated by the messages they received. Not the new age stuff. And not even necessarily the stuff about nature and humans being in balance (though that speaks to me). But the details of the questions they asked. How much fertilizer to put on each plant. Where to plant them. What to do with the soil. How to cut or not cut them. How to mix them. Could this be mere intuition? Hallucinations? Maybe it's like IFS and something internal just "speaks" and it's accessing a different Part? To have such marvelous results. I'm just super intrigued that a bunch of humans came together all with similar ideas of spirits and their garden bloomed in a notable way.
I read about the fallout of Leverage and particularly her points about research into "woo" things specifically the section "Weird experiments and terminology result in sensational claims and rumors

I'd need to see more empirical results (not just read a book by the people themselves saying "yeah it worked!") but if indeed there was a garden for many years that happened as they say, that's very interesting to me and bears further investigation.
I really relate to the yearning for ecological preservation and for being in touch with the Earth's needs and for humans and nature to work together in harmony.
I read about the fallout of Leverage and particularly her points about research into "woo" things specifically the section "Weird experiments and terminology result in sensational claims and rumors

The photography of Kathy Thormod and Will Elwell with the black & white double exposes and amazing nature photography from both abstract and landscapes is worth perusing. The book has hippy-dippy new-agey stuff, but the personal stories, practical gardening tips, poetry, and small bio-diaries of the ecovillage ("spiritual community") of north Scotland make it a good read with inspiring insights (give or take).

Good, inspiring book, but I suppose the most relevant part for me was the last chapter (The Garden Today). The rest are more or less short essays/ reflections from notable individuals who worked at the Garden.

The Findhorn Garden Story may indeed be just a tall tale, although I'd like to believe.
This was a beautiful story, literally. The prints in this edition were gorgeous, and make me want to be a better gardener (correction, be a gardener period).
While I am filled with doubt concerning Devas and nature spirits, I would like to believe-- and that's half the battle, I believe.
This was the last book I had to read for my literature and ecology class, and I think it was a good call on my professor's part.

This book had a profound impact on my youth, leading me first to visit, then live in the community and really devote nearly 20 years of my life to its ethos and vision.
