Busy with her new bar, reluctant medium Billie Culpepper is happy to keep the ghosts away, but when a monthly visitor fails to arrive, she's faced with a life-altering decision.
Meanwhile, Detective Mockler comes across a boy who is being lured out into the woods at night by a mysterious visitor. Concerned for his safety, he begins to suspect that the boy is being haunted.
John Gantry, dabbler of the dark arts, settles into a strange domestic arrangement with the mysterious Cordelia Du Mar. He's about to learn how difficult relationships can be, especially when one's paramour is trapped somewhere between life and death.
Nine books in, and McGregor continues to completely entertain, creep me out, and hold me fascinated to the page by this series. He's constantly finding new and different ways to be haunted.
He's brilliant. Period.
And this book is no exception. I will say, my favourite line was "Grimsby? Nothing good ever came out of that shithole."
Because it's true, and I have an ex-girlfriend to prove it.
Anyway, great book, great series, great writer. Read it.
This series has genuinely been one of the most enjoyable supernatural series I’ve read. Yeah it’s got a bit of romance, but it’s done well and adds to the story rather than detracts from it. This series is an easy read, and I mean that in the most positive of ways. The series flows along so well.
The Boy in the Woods centres around a 12 year old boy who is found out in the woods at night by Detective Mockler whilst investigating a murder scene. The boy is sleepwalk, and it’s no surprise that the reason for the sleepwalking is supernatural in origin.
As with most things supernatural, both Billie and Gantry get pulled into the story. All the characters feel like old friends, and I love finding more about them. In my head I always picture Gantry like Spike from Buffy, and that is never a bad thing.
I’m definitely going to pick up some of the authors other books. My experience so far with this far with the author is absolutely positive.
Oh how I wish the next book was ready ! I have enjoyed these books so much and read them so fast it's at the end before I know it. Good work Mr. McGregor!
I love this series so much! I'm super happy that Tim has continued to give us book after book! I binge read the book and then go back and read the whole series again! 💙💙💙💙💙
I'm always so excited, and so wigged out when a new one of these comes around. I just love these books. True to form he makes me use my dictionary app when reading, and I couldn't be more delighted to do so.
I smile every time I read about our Half-Boy. He's just the cutest, creepiest little protector. I absolutely adore these books, but I'm getting sick of "insecure Billie" who never sticks up for herself.
This one like the rest was haunting and dark (but with bright spots). The evolution of these characters and their relationships keep me coming back for more.
Catching back up with medium Billie Culpepper we find her a little on edge and stressed out - a toss up on the winner being between running her fledgling bar the Merry Agnes and the fact that mother nature's monthly call has failed to arrive yet. Detective Mockler is called out to assist on a what seems an open/close case until he finds Cole in the woods dressed only in pajamas not overly far from the dead body that was found. Cole had come into the woods to play with a friend but his description of events start to sound more "spooky" as time goes on. Gantry is figuring out just what he signed up for by shacking up with the beautiful and mysterious Cordelia Du Mar. This is especially true when your love interest is neither dead or alive and has all the time in the world.
Alright... so I'll be honest - I LOVE this series. I believe I found the first book in the series for free on either Nook or Kindle and I have been reading them since 2014 when the first novel came out. The entire series takes place in Canada besides a few spots here and there about Gantry. Although there are indeed nine novels in this series the author doesn't do his fans a disservice. He hasn't slammed books out left and right because the fans ask for them. I find his thoughts in the Afterword completely frank and I appreciated them:
"However, I can't say when the next volume will be out. To be honest, the books are getting harder to write. I don't want to repeat myself or let the stories become formulaic. You deserve better than that. So, for the summer, I'm going to focus on a new series."
If this book sounds appealing to you I highly suggest the series - they're one of those books that before I even realized it I was 70% done even though it felt like I just sat down to read. I would recommend this series to readers who enjoy ghosts, the paranormal/supernatural, psychics/mediums with a splash of romance and the occult.
Billie and Mockler are together again, fighting a lost soul who's trying to take a living person with him. Billie game is off due to unexpected question.A dead body I'd found along with a boy who is outside not close to home.He goes out at night to play with his friend. His mother thinks it's sleepwalking.Mockler thinks his friend is a ghost.Billie can't get a handle on it but knows somethings wrong. If I keep going I will give the whole storyaway. So you have to read this to find out.
I pick up these books saying "Oh only for 15 mins or so." And then I consume it all in one sitting. I love these characters. They all touch my heart on different levels. Billie feels lile a sister to me. Ray is like an old friend. Gantry is always the life of the party when he shows up. I could go on and on. I look forward to every installment in this series!
Wow, these books just get better, Gantry is staying with Cordelia and her ghostly sisters. Billie has opened a bar and celebrates headfirst anniversary of being with Mockler. Then there's the mystery of the boy in the woods who's haunting Cole. Billie has a tussle with the dead and ends up in hospital whilst trying to find Cole. Lots of scarey bits and sad bits. I can't wait to read the next book.
I had gotten distracted reading some cryptid books, and so had not read the spookshow books for awhile. When I did finally get around to it, it was like a favorite cup of tea and slippers. Ahhh! For me it is a trip to Canada, I'm in Texas, so its a lovely change of scenery. Also I'm very invested in the characters, and the creep factor is delicious. I do hope some of the unanswered questions get resolved in later books. Now on to book 10!
I couldn't give this book anything but a five. So loved reading this and missed these characters. You make me feel as if I'm in the book with Billie, Ray and the rest of the gang. Thanks for such a great read
I love all the Spookshow books! The Boy in the Woods was no different. I have missed Billie, Ray, and Gantry. I am sad it will be a while until more Spookshow books, but I do understand. I am interested in reading what Tim McGregor will be writing next!
Normally a series will lose me around book 6 or 7, NOT THIS ONE!! Mr. McGregor has kept it spooky and developed the characters without getting boring. Good read and looking forward to the next one.
The Spookshow books haven't let me down for a great read and this one's no exception. I love the characters and how they've progressed. Highly recommended!
I love these characters. Billie and Ray are amazing and I can’t wait to see where their personal life’s take them. Plus who doesn’t love Tom??? Great addition to the series, ready for the next one!!
Not my favorite in the series, , but love the pairing between Gantry and Cordelia and can see lots of story possibilities in the future. Billie is building an entourage with Kaitlin getting more involved now. When's the next in the series coming out?
This story was different from the rest of the series. There was more feeling to the characters,I felt that there should have been more of an ending. The story seemed cut off. There should have been more.Nevertheless I did enjoy it.
I love the Spookshow. I am keeping up with those and will continue to do so, thank you Tim for that :) While there is a little drag in one part towards the end of the book, a pretty long part in the woods, which is the reason for 4 stars compared to 5, I enjoyed this book a lot. It was spooky and got me a little bit nervous here and there. A good book worth reading.
During the course of this series I've come to care about them. And this book doesn't disappoint. You really get to find out some answers about the characters that help you become even more invested.
