Val thought it was over, having gambled with fate itself for the lives of all those he loved.
He did not expect to wake up in a hospital bed, in the crosshairs of a professional killer.
A friend he thought lost forever shows him a mysterious game that only a select few can jack into. It's the perfect escape, and what seems a fun lark becomes all too real as he enters a realm where level-ups affect both worlds, dying in game is dying for real, and no one is hungrier for Val's secrets then the men hunting for his head.
Time is running out for Val and everyone he loves.
This is a decent LitRPG series set in what is essentially a darker version of the Star Wars universe.
This third book was pretty good and fast paced. Val is back on earth but his memories of his time in Endless are gone. He awakens in a hospital with someone trying to murder him! From there he had to find why folks wanted him dead and why he is no longer looking quite like his old self.
I liked the twist of this one mostly being set back on earth and with Val just gaming his way to Endless via the VR ports.
This still had the Goodkind ethics and the misogyny but was probably still the best plot of the series so far. Which is good as this has been one of the stronger LitRPG’s I’ve read in terms of worldbuilding and story. That said, I could have done without this story going down the harem building path. Even Goodkind avoided that nonsense!
I’ll press onto the next instalment as I do enjoy this series despite the flaws.
Rating: 4 stars.
Audio Note: This was narrated by Wayne Mitchell who did an OK job with the audio. He got support from Lisa Aust for the female dialogue. I thought that worked quite well for the audio production.
While I liked the storyline enough, I was put off by how ridiculous the characters were. Their actions just didn't make sense. One moment Valor is a genius and killer, the next he is as oblivious and unaware as possible. Another problem was the shifting speach patterns. Val could talk normaly in one line and the next, he couldn't. "We dared not go to the house" All in all, if you don't pay too much attention at how messed up the characters and speech was, it was a good book.
Plot convenient amnesia, stressed logical leaps, horribly stilted dialogue this book has it all. The previous two works in this series were mediocre but had a definite upward swing in regards to the writing throughout but this third installment is a hodgepodge affair that reads like the fever dream of a delirious teenage boy who thinks himself an intuitive savant regardless of reality.
Could not get into 3rd book, was too disconnected from storyline
1st book was extremely difficult to get through first quarter but after that it was enjoyable. 2nd book was enjoyable and consistent for the most part with the storyline. The 3rd book was ridiculous and I wasn’t able to keep interest past first few chapters. Skimmed through a few more chapters and was not able to rekindle the storyline. Ultimately the 3rd book is a dud.
80% serious disappointment ending in 20% overstuffed info.
The first book had its issues but was decent, the second book picked up really well, building the characters and story line, and the third threw it all in the toilet.
It starts off well, a life-or-death struggle mixed with intrigue and seriously interesting tidbits of information, AND THEN IT JUST DROPS. Val goes from being hunter/hunted, to putting on a freaking helmet and RESTARTING the damn "game"... Then we're introduced to a NEW group of adventurers that are nothing more than PALE reflections of the originals, the author totally ignoring the characters that were fully fleshed out over the course of two full books in favor of a rambling, stumbling dialogue about practice and spells and other barely interesting infos, which goes on for more than 50% of the entire book!
Then, finally, the last 20% of the book was crammed full of intense action and numerous, startling revelations, all of which somehow feel like it was forced into the story even though it was obviously planned from the beginning. The author should have focused on developing and fleshing out the story around these revelations, instead of slamming them all in at the end.
It was a little confusing how this story started. Val is dreaming and then wakes to an assassin. Reality between Earth and Jordia blur and Val and the Petrovosky family re-connect. A lot of action, but uncertainty as to which is the good side to be on. More becomes clear but not until the very end of the story. Just as some ends are tied, the story ends. Some editing errors but not enough to deter from continuing to read the series.
An engaging and interesting story, definitely a good read, but...
As wonderful as it was to pick up where the truly outstanding book one ended - and I mean right where it ended - this story just didn’t have the grandness or bonhomie that the first book had. Thrilled to see book two, and very happy to read it, but there’s no connections to most of the wonderful book one characters that I’m so invested in, and that was tough to deal with. I understand that it is a transitional work, focused on earth, and letting us explore the intriguing (no, really) things going on there. However it was difficult to understand why Val was so different, and why that was. (A tad more exposition could have helped there.) Also hard to take was the sheer normalcy of it all, especially after the crazy ride we came from in book one. The ending certainly helps though.
Ultimately this book is critical to the series, and just like how you may not have liked everything you saw in “Empire Strikes Back” from the first movie, you can’t deny that the saga certainly got more interesting. That means we can hope that book three will not only be an amazing combination of both worlds, but that all the beloved action and characters previously seen will make their appearance also.
First off the author loves the word hideously. I tried to count how many times in the first chapter but stopped because it was too funny. For me the word lost all meaning due to its over use.
Secondly this book is slower paced and a little frustrating at first. It gets better, so struggle through. Their are definite plot holes and other errors that will bug you. Plot hole Julia’s mom could have healed his legs but can’t fix the ports on her daughter. Great potion of healing we are told in book 1 and 2 are rare but his guild has a plethora of. Leveling up makes you sleepy and is serious business, except when it isn’t for everyone else. However overall it’s not a bad read. I think the author is getting better with practice.
Pulls Things Together Val finally ends up back on Earth. Some of his "character" assets has transferred over.
Huge new developments in his relationship with his father, the government, and Julia.
His legs are all shiny, and he discovers the true nature of the relationship between the normal world, and the gaming world he was living in.
Book starts out very confusing/disorienting, you have to just get through that and it pays off.
Of course it turns our that Val and Julia both have highlord blood, and Christine, Julia's mother was also friend / lover of Val's mother, who was also a highlord.
First two were interesting and adventuresome, though building a universe painfully slowly. I stuck with it as there was a series in front of it that promised more. I was sorely mistaken, now having spent many hours reading over a character who has amnesia of the past two books, and is going over EVERYTHING again, as if I wanted to read the first two books over just because. Plot was ok, supporting characters were flimsy, no interest for the rest of the series. Disappointing. Felt like smacking my head against a wall for all that it was painful trying to read. Truly dull amnesic writing. Hope for better in newer series.
I was a little hesitant at first to get into this third entry to what is easily one of my favorite LitRPG series to date, I won’t go into spoilers at all but it seemed like somewhat of a reset of the story. Luckily I kept reading and found myself completely hooked again by the end of the book, lots of fun twists and turns by the last page of the story and I’m excited to see where it goes from here. Bring on book 4!
If you haven’t yet given this series a shot then definitely do, I can’t recommend it enough!
First book took me a few chapters to get into it, so much so that I only continued reading it on my second go at it and I really enjoyed it, good story with some questionable character actions.
Second book was much better and really enjoyed it, but this 3rd installment, I'm about 3/4 through it atm and I'm really only sticking to it in the hopes that it'll get better and back to where the 2nd one left off. It feels like a soft reboot that wasn't needed and amnesia is a terrible plot point on even the best story lines and that's not mentioning the loss of already established companions.
Now fully immersed into the Endless world both physically and mentally; it is no longer a game. Valor starts on his path as a leader of the new world. Fighting the Highlord nobles and their armies as they use their Empirical laws to to squabble and attack.
This book really hits the mark! We finally get to see a fully climatized Valor learning new abilities as he joins his old friends with his new friends in savage battles against the Highlords. Family and friends are joined as the book really finds its footing. 5/5 Fantastic writing and character development!
Made my way through all 3 current books. And they are great. Portal fiction more than litrpg. One of the main issues I have noticed especially in this book was over use of the name Jonathon vals dad's name is Jonathon Val uses that name as an alias then one of his first friends in the games step dad is named Jonathan then one of his squadmates. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a couple other johns but that's one of the main issues.
This series remind me of several other series that I like: The Unbound Deathlord series and The Phantom Server series. Thrillers in our world and some advanced tech in the very real game world. I found the prologue confusing after too long a break since reading the previous book. It didn't take very long before I got back into the groove of the story again. Excellent series.
I found the third book in the series to be painfully slow in pace. Easily half of the book could have been deleted and not lost a bit of the plot. The litRPG minutia is mind numbing in this book. The character development was stale and left way too many of the interesting story lines out of play and unexplored. If the fourth book of the series takes as long to actually resolve anything as this did, I will consider the series and author a failure.
I just finished reading this book, and the series has actually been getting better, despite the fact that the previous two books were very good. The series is a mix of litRPG and sci-fi, and it has just about everything you would want from a series. Humor, drama, fast-paced action, surprising twists, and an overall storyline that is well thought-out, subtle, and seamlessly interwoven. I cannot wait to read the next book!
I truly enjoyed the deep overlapping storylines, slipping from to nightmare to school room classes on the astral to flashes of past lives, from Earth overlapping with Jordia. I can understand why this writing style may confuse some readers, unless you have experienced the same thing, it may be difficult to track. Brilliant languishing, epic battles, and shining love throughout.
The first two books had a normal flow. Amnesia is annoying as an entire plot line. It’s come together ok but way too verbose and too many tangents in this one. The ending tried to salvage it but the book needed to be edited. Had very high hopes that fell short. Good use of the English language and great vocabulary. I’ll try the next book but if it continues I won’t finish it. Thanks for the book and appreciate you writing even if I don’t love it. To each his own.
Third installment in the series and the story is slowly coming together with Val and Julia finding out about thier parents. This is a well crafted tale that is a cut above most of the LitRPG novrls that are out, though you need to have a PHD in math to understand the magic system!
Endless online is a unique and fun series. It is technically game lit because there is some game elements in it, but mostly for just one person. It's not until this third book that other people seem to be partaking in the same game as the main character. A fun series, recommended.
Ever read a book and disagree where the author is taking you?
this book has made me stop reading the series. I was on the fence up to now because the main character was so over powered.... but this book the author took the character so far afield it felt wrong for the main character. That being said I hope you keep writing and I wish you every success!
With the changes that took place going into book 3, I really had difficulty finishing this one. It finally brought me back towards the end, though, and I’m glad I finished it!
For those who really enjoyed books 1 & 2, like myself, and find book 3 to be a bit of a departure, hang in there!
Somehow the author managed to write this book as compellingly and almost as originally as the first! An unexpected twist that at first I wrote off as a very poorly executed transition slowly revealed itself to be a masterfully composed interweaving. Read it yourself to discover more.
The whole "forgot everything" bit was a bit eh for me but that fact that it happened as a result of travel through and multi-dimensional portal while having and major exothermic reaction going off and having to literally process over 6000 souls killed there in make me feel the need to give a little leeway.

Amazing continuation of the seeries. A innovation of leveling and a must read for any lit RPG fan. I read practically non-stop from start to finish and it leaves me waiting for more.
This book is perilously frustrating, and rightfully so when you spend the effort to continue reading. Fantastic and worth your time. I hope the author is well on their way to releasing the fourth book, I can’t wait to feast my eyes on it!
Reading MHJohnson novels is like strapping into an f22 with a maniac as a pilot. The hypersonic pace with 9 G turns will make your head spin and your guts clench with each paragrapg .WoW
