Filles Vertes Publishing Proudly Presents
Our First Annual Short Story Anthology

Short stories are magical. They are a whisper of a bigger picture, a concentration on an emotion that seeps from the page and into the hearts of the readers. Even in their brevity, short stories can captivate, transport, and mesmerize.

I’ve always wanted to do an anthology, and I’m proud to present Flicker as FVP’s first. Some of the contributors are FVP authors, some are or were editorial interns or staff members, and others won a coveted spot through our short story contest in 2017. All shared beautifully, offering patience and grace as our team put this together.

Chris Barnham is a writer of science fiction, fantasy and (sometimes) horror.

His short fiction has appeared in a range of magazines and anthologies, including Compelling Science Fiction, Interzone - the UK's premier science fiction magazine - Black Static, and the late-lamented Pan Books of Horror.

Chris’s 2018 novel, Fifty One features a time-traveling cop who is marooned in 1940s London. The story was inspired by a real event, a German V1 rocket that fell on a busy shopping street in south London in July 1944, killing fifty-one people. Fortunately, Chris did not live there at the time.

His first novel, Among the Living is available as an ebook and paperback. It's a hybrid of mystery, paranormal thriller and heartbreaking love story, in which a widowed father discovers that there is much more to his new lover than he could have imagined. To quote one reviewer, it “…transforms what starts out as a simple and passionate love story into a threatening, supernatural mystery.”

Chris worked for two decades for the British government, advising Ministers on education and employment policies. In 2013, he decided it was time to make stuff up for himself. He now combines writing with running a small business, and active involvement in community politics in south London, where he has lived since the 1980s. He lives in London, England, with three tall children and a scary wife. Whenever work allows, he spends as much time as possible out of town with mud on his boots. His latest walking challenge is the 630-mile South West Coast Path, around the Devon and Cornwall coasts. You can follow his (slow) progress on his blog at chrisbarnhamwriter.wordpress.com

He is (occasionally) on Twitter as @barnham_chris

So today I received a copy of Flicker published by Filles Vertes Publishing.
I bought this anthology of short stories when I became aware that K.M. Pohlkamp had written a story with the title Physicists in Petticoats.
What a delightful title. I was not disappointed. There is an education in this short story from the first line to the end dedication. The introduction of Professor Lawrence brings a tension and frustration that is carried through the whole story. I wanted to be able to read faster and empathise with Miss Barnett, our Physicist.
K.M.Pohlkamp has written a shining example of the frustrations experienced by those talented individuals who place the integrity of the science above the personal setbacks of the era.
