This is a great tribute to fan conventions and a fun parody of fantasy tropes. Mika is a young woman who is coming home from ComiKet, Japan’s biggest comics convention, only to find herself sucked into a fantasy world. Whereas plenty of other isekai series have the hero love getting to live out their power fantasies in a magical world where they have some great abilities, Mika just wants to go home. And I can’t blame her much, since the bonus material at the back shows she’s just level 3, and the story makes it clear she only knows one spell.

Fortunately, that one spell is the magical equivalent of a photocopier, allowing her to duplicate any text she encounters. Combine that with her fandom experience and she decides to found MagiKet, the Magical Market that acts as a giant convention hall for mages of all kinds to buy, sell, and trade spells and knowledge. But Mika isn’t trying to take this as an opportunity to become a power witch or otherwise control the world - she’s just hoping that with all the wizards in the world together, one of them will know the spell that can send her home.

It’s a really fun and creative premise for a story and it allows for some interesting and funny moments. The stakes are high enough to be invested in Mika’s journey without being so high that they make the comedic moments not work. And it’s clear that the author has a lot of love for ComiKet and Japan’s manga industry in general. As the translator’s notes explain, aspects of the mages’ guilds, the convention itself, and other things poke fun at the big manga publishers, the foibles of a twice yearly manga convention, and other aspects of fandom life.

Even without knowing the ins and outs of Japan’s comics scene, there’s a lot of fun to be had watching as the real world difficulties and logistics of organizing a big con get a fantasy twist. The first chapter opens with a gathering of monsters, but rather than being the army of the demon king, it’s just everybody sending their familiars to grab a place in line the night before in spite of the rules. The elite soldiers of the world get to moonlight as con security, and even the process of making the con catalogue becomes tricky when magic gets involved. Plus there’s a chapter dealing with the dangers of deadlines in the printing world, and I love how this volume ends with a story that makes fun of the bikini battle armor trope and gives a logical way of introducing cosplay to a fantasy world.

I read this entirely because I stumbled across it once at a Barnes and Noble and the title intrigued me. I’m glad I finally got around to this because it’s a surprisingly fun time, and while I generally haven’t found myself rushing off to check out the isekai trend as a whole, I think this is a pretty fun example of what you can do when you get creative with portal fantasy. I’ve already requested the next few volumes from my local library and I definitely encourage anybody who likes fan cons to give this a look.

The adventures of Mika, running both a convention of magic users to sell spells, and a press for magical works.

We learn in the first story that her dream in starting the convention was that it would attract someone with a spell that would let her get back to her native Tokyo from this magical world, but it starts thoroughly in media res, with her having the business running full throttle, the convention about ready to run, and many friends and workers whose backstory with her is not revealed.

Episodic. Managing lines, armor, Mika's talking with someone at an unpopular table, a rush order because a spell book is needed against werewolves, a death cured by combining spells, the invention of cosplay in this world, and more. Not all the stories even feature Mika as the main character.

Aufmachung

Absolutely adorable, this first installment in the series clearly taps into the love and joy anyone who is a fan of nerd culture has experienced, especially if you've ever been to a convention. With a fantasy light flavoring, this is really going to be a hit with Dungeons & Dragons fans, anyone who produces content for fan communities or content for the sheer joy of it. There's a lot to love in this celebration of fictional people celebrating their love of magic! Highly recommend for nerds of all variety!

Convention fans will enjoy the many easter eggs and references to the manga publishing world. But it didn't really capture my interest and the uber-boob fan service made this one easy to set aside.

Girl gets isekaied to a magical world and starts a printing press and Magiket (aka Comiket but magical). This was a lot of fun though the girl really needs to learn about life/work balance XD. Plus, will she be able to find a magical spell to bring her home or will she stay here (I mean, it doesn't seem so bad in this place). And I need that catalogue badly, it looks so cool (though I can imagine having the pictures go all over the place was a tough one, haha, I loved how they just went by each other's for a chat). And sorry, I found it hilarious that the greatest of all were ask to help, both with the catalogue/making the floor plan work, but also having an army to control the masses. But these guys really did it without much grumbling and I liked seeing them help Mika out with various problems she had. Oh, and that vice captain, he looks so adorable, but don't make him angry. XD
And lastly, I can see a thriving cosplay scene happen with those dwarfs and their items.
Love the extras~
All in all, I need more.

This is something I found at my local library, and I like it so much I purchased a copy for myself. It is that much fun.

This is the story of Mika Kamiya, a witch who runs a printing office in a typical medieval fantasy world. She is also the head of the Magic Market Prep Committee, which runs the Magic Market. It is a semi-annual event where magic-users can gather to purchase spells from each other, be they expert professionals of large factions or amateurs working overnight just for this event.

In other words, it is basically a magical world version of real life's Comic Market/Comiket. That is where its humor lies.

This is a Low Fantasy comedy story, and it likes poking gentle fun at dark/ high/otherwise serious fantasy stories. Each chapter begins with a bait-and-switch joke that APPEARS as though something epic is going on when it is actually something more mundane/non-dangerous.

For instance, the first chapter has the patrons of a tavern noting that a lot of monsters are gathering in "the Holy Land", which makes them think that the demon lord is reviving. There's even a group of knights whose mission is to slay these monsters. However, these monsters are revealed to be conjured familiars of of mages who are attending Magic Market, and the knights are slaying them because it is against the rules for a familiar to hold a mage's place in line, especially overnight. This happens in real-life, apparently, and the people who do it are called "overnight fiends".

This is not the only joke that parallels the real life Comic Market. Some of them are quick and obvious, but some are more subtle, or take longer to prepare. One in particular had me thinking "No way...This isn't leading up to that, is it?" Then I laughed when the story did indeed lead up to that.

It is not all jokes, though. Chapter 2 takes an unexpected turn for the dramatic, and has excellent catharsis. Chapter 5 is intense. Even though it is a Mundane-Made-Awesome sort of chapter, it is still an exciting chapter. Chapter 6 is a complete package of drama, character development, humor, and plot progression.

I like Mika as a character. She is cute and friendly, but also serious about her job and has admirable work ethic. It is her pride as a professional that leads her to pull an overnight-er to complete urgent print jobs, and her concerns about her office staying solvent that create packages like "dragon slayer", which makes the job cost twice as much if it needs to be completed by morning.

Other characters aren't quite as well-rounded or developed as Mika is, but they are still plenty distinct and have interesting arcs to themselves. Naki the Necormancer, for instance, is sympathetic and Gandolf is a funny old man.

The artwork is great.
--> The battle with the "overnight fiends" looks epic, as does the "battlefield" that Broadway fights upon.
--> The settings, magic market, taverns, and, of course, the titular printing press, are all detailed and interesting to explore.
--> The characters, like Mika and Naki, are cute.

Phew! That was the most chaotic manga I think I have ever read. The story is basically about a young, human girl who has ended up in this world of magical beings and has decided to organize a Magiket (which is basically like a magical ComicCon). As readers, we are dropped right into the middle of this world starting off with a bunch of beast familiars who are going to some unknown destination and scaring all of the people in the local villages as they make their way. We soon find out that they have been sent by their magical hosts to hold their place in line at this magic market (which is actually kind of funny). This type of chaos continues - there is the chaos of the market, a printing emergency, wizards/witches/blacksmiths fighting, and a second chaotic market. The result is that you never really get to take a break from the action to understand anything about the main characters who make up the friend group.

I was really attracted to the idea of a witch's printing office, but we barely spent any time in that setting at all. The art and speech bubbles in the panels are equally chaotic to the point where they are almost difficult to follow. We learn that the main character, Mika, has basically organized these events to attract magic users who might have a spell that can send her back home to her world in Tokyo, but we never learned what she left behind and why she wants to return. There are some interesting and unique concepts explored in this manga, but I just wish the author and illustrator had done a better job with the pacing of this manga. Everything does not need to be action packed to be interesting.

2020 Read #95

2.5 stars

As I’ve been saying with other manga I’ve rated low recently — there’s nothing explicitly bad about this series so far. The art is good, the setting and world show a lot of promise, and the characters seem like they’d be fun to follow. But...I’m not a fan of the isekai (basically “reincarnated into another world” series, at least from my definition of them) fantasy stories, and this one is not really much different. It’s cute how there’s a fantastical version of Comiket for magical purposes, but you need to have a fondness for fantasy settings, common character types, wordy exposition, and related tropes to enjoy how this series takes those expectations and runs with them. I’m not thrilled or wowed by this particular take, but that is just my personal opinion on the series as of volume 1.

Twenty years ago I worked for a marketing department for a tech firm business. One of our big jobs was the planning, organizing, and running of two annual conventions. The types of problems Mika and her employees have mirror the ones we had. I found the situational mashup of an alternate world, magic and magic users, and the logistics of running a convention, hilarious.

•It was a good manga but we don't learn more about the girl's goal. it's was like something is missing.

Read 2 volumes

I was really confused at first because there is really no set up. You get thrown into the story from the first page. But once I figured it out, I started to enjoy it a lot. I really like the goofy cast of characters and I really like Mika! I’ll definitely be reading more!

Edit 2/27/22: I like this manga! It’s got some fun adventures but I think there’s a semblance of a plot forming. The ending was somewhat cliffhanger-y so I definitely want to read more!

Actually kind of bored by this one. The setting felt bland, the main character isn't terribly engaging, the fanservice is unusually jarring, and it turns out that running a convention and printing press don't make for terribly exciting stories.

Fantasy usually takes the mundane and makes it magical. This manga took the fantastic and made it almost painfully mundane.
We start off in a magical world and see masses of monsters and magic-users on the move, so naturally we think there's a war brewing or something. It turns out they're all going to, basically, Magic-Con, a magic-book version of ComicCon devised by a geek-girl from our world who got whisked away to this fantasy land to make it easier for her to find a spell that could send her back. Okay, clever plan maybe, ha ha, but I would have preferred to see how she landed there, came up with this plan, and managed to execute it rather than sit through the minutiae of running a con and, later, a printing office (yawn). It's unclear why the main character even wants to go back, considering that she has a cadre of fairly powerful friends there who are very fond of her and willing to teach her magic and no pressing memories yet disclosed that would drive her quest, but this is a genre-spoof manga, so it's doubtful we'll get any serious parts to give this story more dimension.
Character designs are fairly decently drawn, but derivative. One of the background characters is a total copy of LotR's Gandalf, and another minor character is straight-up NAMED 'Gandolf'--both of which will annoy some readers. The main character is the typical Sexy Four-Eyes In Tall Stockings manga trope. We also see the annoying inclusion of Woman With Massive Balloony Boobs That She Squishes Against Everything, Ha-Ha, which is an instant turn-off for me as a reader. The action/battle scenes were drawn in a way that made it hard to figure out what was going on. I gave it a chance and sat through two story arcs (besides the 'Magiket' convention, she also runs a magic-book printing press, again in hopes of running across a portal-spell) but couldn't bring myself to read any further out of sheer boredom. Though I tend to like isekai (whisked-to-another-world) stories, this one is just not for me. Die-hard convention fans might enjoy it more.

3 isn’t bad, it’s just neutral, average. Probably more like 3.5. It’s enjoyable enough but not really my kinda thing. Mainly because there was no real building or true explanation. That’s fine, I feel that’s intentional in the book and not an oversight. The point of this is just seeing one of many little moments in the MCs life. But I just feel there wasn’t enough explanation for what and why. The concept for the world is amazing, but so barely explored. On top of that I still fail to see why the MC is actually trying to do what they’re doing at all. Maybe it’s just cause this isn’t my usual genre but she seem so so so bent on getting back home despite having an amazing life now. Maybe if her life was difficult it would make more sense but she has good friends and an ice place and I dunno it just feels weird.

It’s still a fun read and I’ll possibly pick up the second volume. If you life very very very low impact reads and just enjoy the vibe this is a perfect book for a cozy afternoon with some coffee or tea. Consider it more like how it started, a random cute little webcomic as opposed to a wide ranging story.

Cute, low stakes isekai manga about a girl named Mika who finds herself transported into a magical fantasy world. Our main character is not deterred and devices a fairly creative way where she can find the magic spell to get her back to her world: she sets up a Magic Market (Magiket), in the style of the Japanese comic market (Comiket), gathering as many spell books as she can in the hopes that one of the magic creators will bring the one that she needs to get home.

This would appeal to intermediate or advanced otaku; a lot of the jokes make more sense if you know how Comiket works and the sheer craziness of the event. I suppose if you've attended fan conventions, the context would be familiar too. There are in-jokes about the monopoly of Japanese (comics) publishing companies, about the book printing process, and about the behind-the-scenes work in running a convention/event. I personally enjoyed it 'cause I love this stuff, but your mileage may vary.

Some ecchi parts, but nothing too explicit.

I saw this title getting a fair amount of love on the MangTube subspace of BookTube, and decided to give it a shot. All in all, while the premise of the series isn't exactly one I think I would find easy to explain (and I certainly didn't understand anyone else when they attempted to explain it, it was easier to simply start reading,) it definitely feels like one many people within nerd subcultures can appreciate and relate to.

There isn't much of a plot, in my opinion; it feels closer to slice-of-life vignettes tightly connected by a central theme, at least as far as I'm concerned. And that's not a bad thing at all! It keeps the tone very light-hearted. Additionally, the art is stunning, and I think this first volume is worth that alone for a read.

All in all, I had fun with it! I'm undecided what I want to do with my copy as of present, because I'm sure there are others who would enjoy it far more than I would, but I do think I'm leaning towards keeping this one for now.

Mika was isekai'd into a world of magic but her main wish is to go home. How? By finding a magic spell to send her back to her world. But Mika only knows the copy spell so she'll need a magic scroll or tome that contains the spell. But first she has to find one. How? By opening the Magic Market (Magiket)! An event similar to the Comic Market (Comiket) in Japan where vendors can sell their wares whether they're published by a large company or self published and stapled together by hand.

In the meantime, Mika has opened a printshop to help these self-publishers get their spells on paper and each passing adventure helps her grow Magiket.

This makes me miss conventions so bad...

This series has 6 volumes.
